Questions about Extending Active Directory Schema

We have about 24 Macs at the moment in the environment and we are starting to look at Extending the Active Directory Schema.  I have been doing a lot of reading over the past few weeks and I think that I am more confused the more I research it.  The Windows Servers here are running Server 2008_R2.  So here are my questions:
1. If we extend the schema does that mean that we do not need an OS X Server?
2. Is this really the easiest option to go with?
3. We are looking to be able to apply GPOs to the Macs through Active Directory so will this accomplish it?
4. Will this also allow Group Policy Preferences to map printers to the Macs automatically too?
5. Is this the least expensive option?
6. What is the best way to convince the Windows Administrators that this is how we should proceed?
Thanks
Pads

Hi
1. Yes. However OSX Server offers far more than MCX or Mac-Style GPOs. NetBoot, SUS, Wiki are some you should be looking at IMO.
2. Again IMO not really. It takes a lot of work and you really don't want to be doing this on a 'live' server. Set up a lab environment first, thoroughly test it and then go with it when you're happy. The other possible 'gotcha' is you will have no way of knowing if Microsoft decide to change/amend or extend their own proprietary schema in a Revision update sometime in the future. If that does happen then you may be looking at doing it all over again?
3. Yes, but you will still need WorkGroup Manager installed on a mac client. The documentation is clear about what to do once the Schema has been extended.
4. Not done this myself but I would think so.
5. Yes, but is it the 'best' option? Not in my opinion.
6. Offer them the 'easier' but more expensive alternatives (some of them very expensive) and see which way they jump.
HTH?

  • Error when extending Active Directory schema

    Hi there,
    I am trying to extend my active directory schema in order to store my managed preferences in AD.

    Does anyone encountered the same issue ? Any idea ?

    Which is line #674? Looking over your listing, the only thing that stands out to me is that I think possSuperiors takes object class names, not IDs (i.e. "possSuperiors: 2.5.6.5" should be "possSuperiors: organizationalUnit"). Also, if you copy and paste sections from the PDF, you're likely to get leading and trailing spaces on the pasted lines, which all need to be removed for it to function properly. The trailing spaces are especially nasty, since they're invisible in most text editors.

    any one help me to fix this issue

    Hi,
    It is most likley due to a replication Issue in your AD, check the previous thread on the topic:https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/systemcenter/en-US/1d377109-4fa9-4608-8a3a-cefd436e82ee/error-8224-when-extending-active-directory-schema
    Make sure that all replication issues are solved and try again.

  • Active Directory Schema Extension for Directory Synchronization - ADFS 3.0, Office 365

    Hi Team,
    We are in a situation with extending the schema for one customer so that these additional exchange attributes may be utilized. They have a single data center where the Primary Domain Controller resides and have multiple remote sites each of which have Additional
    Domain Controllers installed.
    As recommended by Microsoft, I am going to extend the Active Directory Schema with Exchange Setup so that I can leverage targetaddress attribute from Local AD to set primary email address when directory synchronization happens.
    My Query: Do I have to extend the AD Schema with Exchange from each of these ADC's? Or the changes I make on any of them will replicate over the others also?
    Note: The customer will be using ADFS 3.0 'Single Sign On' with Office 365 and does NOT have any On-Premise Exchange deployment.

    My Query: Do I have to extend the AD Schema with Exchange from each of these
    ADC's? Or the changes I make on any of them will replicate over the others also?
    Schema extension is done against the Schema Master. Once done, it gets replicated to other DCs with the AD forest.
    For more details about Schema Extension by Exchange, you can refer to that: http://www.resdevops.com/2013/02/13/extend-ad-schema-to-allow-greater-office-365-management/

    Dear Customer Service Team,
    I bought a twelve-month Dreamweaver CC program with monthly payment that I have paid via bank transfer and there would be a question about the activation. How could I get the license key with which I can activate my account? I can not find it and now I only have access to the trial version.
    Thank you for your help in advance.
    Kind Regards,

    There is no serial number require for Creative Cloud products, you may activate the products using your email address and password which is associated with Adobe. If your Dreamweaver asking for serial number, then make sure you are signing in with correct email address.

  • Active Directory schema extensions

    Hi
    We are in a process of implementing SAP LDAP sync to manage users from MS Active Directory. SAP requires schema extension generated by RSLDAPSCHEMAEXT program to be applied to Active Directory so that report RSLDAPSYNC_USER can be identify SAP users in MS AD.
    The MS AD team says that any non miscrosoft schema extensions are not supported as OIDs of the schema might conflict with other applications / patches.
    Are the MS AD schema extensions generated by SAP program RSLDAPSCHEMAEXT supported / certified by Microsoft.
    Harsh

    Hi Harsh,
    I would like to point you also to SAP Note 888848 - Notes on schema enhancement with RSLDAPSCHEMAEXT.
    It especially states that:
    ..."The text document generated by RSLDAPSCHEMAEXT was supplied and validate as part of a certification process by the directory vendor."...
    that means in this case by Microsoft.
    If you decide not to use the schema extension that has been supplied by Microsoft you can use attributes that are already existing in your Active Directory as Juergen already pointed out.
    As an example Microsoft Exchange Server creates several additional attributes such as extensionattribute1, ... , extensionattribute15 as part of the installation process. These attributes might be an option for you if you do not want to use the schema extension suggested by RSLDAPSCHEMAEXT.
    Please have in mind that the filter attribute that you will use to determine the SAP username should be indexed since this will reduce the synchronization time.
    Best Regards,
    André

    We have an issue regarding active directory user registry. Our application wants to retrieve the user registry from active directory,

    2> change factory calendar: choose CN China factory calendar to change and then enter validation from 1995 to 2098(for example)

    Hi,
    You are correct, But You can change it on QAS due to client will not modifiable.
    Goto Developement System and run scal.
    Most important is to change/extend factory calander and save it. Request will be generated as Workbench. Transport it to Production System.

  • Active directory Schema - Multiple password policies

    Hi All,
    I am new to AD and would need some suggestion to configure AD. I want to set up AD(2008 R2) for three categories of users: individual, dealers and organisations. Each dealer and each organisation will have further sub-categories based
    on their location. I want to set up separate password policies for the above three categories using AD. I wanted to create them as separate OUs. So I would have multiple OUs for each dealer per location (e.g. individual, dealer1loc1, dealer1loc2,
    dealer2loc3 and so on)
    I know the concept of PSO(Password Settings Object) and that it can only be applied to OU using shadow groups and batch file (to copy users from OU to Shadow Groups). The issue is that the OUs would keep getting added as per requirement (would
    be  creating new OUs using C#) and then the management of PSO or shadow groups or batch file would be very complicated, not sure if it can be automated.
    Also, I have budet constraints to add new servers for each domain and separate password policies.
    What could be the possible solution to separate password policies and set up this user structure in Active Directory. I am using W2k8 R2.
    Thanks.

    Thanks Mahdi. In this case, the OUs would get created at run time, so the script needs to get updated at run time as well. I guess this will be not easy to automate.
    Also, can you confirm if I can set up separate password policies by creating sub domain(e.g. example.com will be divided into sales.example.com and admin.example.com and this would further be divided as melourne.sales.example.com and sydney.sales.example.com)
    and I can set separate password policies for sales.example.com and admin.example.com.
    By adding child domains,it is like you are killing a mosquito with a rocket launcher, if you know what I mean. adding child domains increase the cost and administration and also adds complexity to your environment.
    From technical perspective it is OK to have child domains, but if I were you I would not add that much complexity to my environment because of a script. I would spend enough time or get help form a skilled script writer to edit the script. Also I am saying
    that editing your script to a fully automated script is not impossible, it just needs enough time and skills.

  • Questions about Extended classic scenario

    Hi gurus,
    I'm working in SRM 5.0, ECS, backend ECC 6.0 (only one backend).
    Everytime a SC is being approved a SRM PO has be created. Then a copy of this PO  has to be created in ECC with document Type ATT and the same number of the SRM PO.
    I have two questions
    First of all I need to know the settings to make in 'Define objects in backend system' (for every purchasing Group and every Category ID, I need to create always PO in backend).
    P.Gr   Category ID  Source System      Internal proc.                              External proc.
            *                 TRDCLNT011         Always external procurement        PO if item data complete, otherwise P.Req.
    Is this correct?
    Secondly I need to understand the logic for number range definition
    SRM Activities
    1 - Define number range for Shopping Cart
    I Need to create a SC number range
    01 1000000000 - 1999999999
    and then associate this range (01) to SHC transaction type ('Int.n' field)
    2 - Define a number range for local PO
    LO 7000000000 - 7999999999
    and then associate this range (LO) to ECPO transaction type ('Int.n' field)
    3- Create a new transaction type 'ATT' (backend PO)
    4 - Define a number range for backend PO
    PO 7000000000 - 7999999999
    and then associate this range (PO) to ATT transaction type ('Int.n' field)
    ECC Activities
    1 - Define a number range for document type ATT
    XX 7000000000 - 7999999999
    and then associate this range (XX) to ATT Document  type 'External
    Is this correct?
    I'd really appreciate your help
    Points will be rewarded
    Thaks in advance
    Best regards
    Gg

    Hi. It all sounds about right.
    I don't think the define backend docs does a great deal in ECS, you always get a PO with extended classic. If you ever want anything but a PO, a reservation for example, you have to not use extended classic for those items.
    The number ranges look OK, although I think you only need 1 number range for the backend/local POs, it should all go in line on its own. It's been a while since I got an ECS system going so it is hard to remember.
    The thing to do is try it in a test system and see what happens.
    If anything goes wrong let us know on SDN what error messages you get and we should be able to help.

    Dave.

    sp.setProperty("http://java.sun.com/xml/properties/jaxp/schemaSource",
    "mySchema.xsd") ;
    sp.parse(<XML Document>, <ContentHandler);
    but when compile, it has error: can't resolve ""http://java.sun.com/xml/properties/jaxp/schemaLanguage", and
    "http://java.sun.com/xml/properties/jaxp/schemaSource".
    It seems it didn't support above two property.
    I saw some code in forum is:
    fact.setFeature("http://xml.org/sax/features/validation", true);
    fact.setFeature("http://apache.org/xml/features/validation/schema",true);
    fact.setFeature("http://apache.org/xml/features/validation/schema-full-checking", true);
    SAXParser sp = fact.newSAXParser();
    sp.setProperty("http://apache.org/xml/properties/schema/external-noNamespaceSchemaLocation",schemas);
    Why sun tutorial use property:http://java.sun.com/xml/properties/jaxp/schemaLanguage
    and someone use:http://apache.org/xml/properties/schema/external-noNamespaceSchemaLocation
    where to get information about setting properties for SAXParserFactory?
    Thanks

    In the past, ColdFusion's XML validation mechanism seems to have had issues with schemas that contain imports, e.g., http://forums.adobe.com/message/155906. Have these issues still not been resolved?
    Do you not think that perhaps you're answering your own question here?
    I don't see an issue about this on the bug tracker.  It might be an idea if you can get a simple, stand-alone repro case together and raise an issue (and post the reference back here and against that other thread so people know to vote for it).  If you post the repro case here too, it would be helpful.

  • Question about XML validation against schema

    My question is probably a basic one about XML. I tried PurchaseOrder example from the book "J2EE Web Services" by Richard Monson-Haefel. A simplified version as followings -
    Address.xsd -
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <schema xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"
    targetNamespace="http://xml.netbeans.org/schema/Address"
    xmlns:addr="http://xml.netbeans.org/schema/Address"
    elementFormDefault="qualified">
    <element name="address" type="addr:USAddress" />
    <complexType name="USAddress">
    <sequence>
    <element name="name" type="string" />
    <element name="street" type="string" />
    <element name="city" type="string" />
    <element name="state" type="string" />
    <element name="zip" type="string" />
    </sequence>
    </complexType>
    </schema>
    PurchaseOrder.xsd -
    <schema xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"
    targetNamespace="http://xml.netbeans.org/schema/PurchaseOrder"
    xmlns:po="http://xml.netbeans.org/schema/PurchaseOrder"
    xmlns:ad="http://xml.netbeans.org/schema/Address"
    elementFormDefault="qualified">
    <import namespace="http://xml.netbeans.org/schema/Address" schemaLocation="Address.xsd" />
    <element name="purchaseOrder" type="po:PurchaseOrder" />
    <complexType name="PurchaseOrder">
    <sequence>
    <element name="accountName" type="string" />
    <element name="accountNumber" type="unsignedShort" />
    <element name="shipAddress" type="ad:USAddress" />
    <element name="total" type="float" />
    </sequence>
    <attribute name="orderDate" type="date" />
    </complexType>
    </schema>
    Then PurchaseOrder.xml is -
    <purchaseOrder orderDate="2007-12-12"
    xmlns='http://xml.netbeans.org/schema/PurchaseOrder'
    xmlns:addr="http://xml.netbeans.org/schema/Address"
    xmlns:xsi='http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance'
    xsi:schemaLocation='http://xml.netbeans.org/schema/PurchaseOrder ../xsd/PurchaseOrder.xsd'>
    <accountName>Starwood</accountName>
    <accountNumber>220</accountNumber>
    <shipAddress>
    <name>Data Center</name>
    <street>1501 Washington St.</street>
    <city>Braintree</city>
    <state>MA</state>
    <zip>02148</zip>
    </shipAddress>
    <total>250</total>
    </purchaseOrder>
    Then I did a XML validation but have this error -
    cvc-complex-type.2.4.a: Invalid content was found starting with element 'name'. One of '{"http://xml.netbeans.org/schema/Address":name}' is expected. [19]
    It complains <name> tag in <shipAddrss> needs namespace of "http://xml.netbeans.org/schema/Address". Why?
    Is it possible to change XML so it does not need name space for elements inside <shipAddress>?
    Thanks

    Hi Madhura,
    see here my comparison of the web version against the local file version on my Windows box (which is itself not the fastest): It makes a factor 16 in difference!

    Obviously, the w3c.org domain that you specified as ressource location is very slow - and, as the FAQ shows, this delay is intentional!
    The W3C servers are slow to return DTDs. Is the delay intentional?
    Yes. Due to various software systems downloading DTDs from our site millions of times a day (despite the caching directives of our servers), we have started to serve DTDs and schema (DTD, XSD, ENT, MOD, etc.) from our site with an artificial delay. Our goals in doing so are to bring more attention to our ongoing issues with excessive DTD traffic, and to protect the stability and response time of the rest of our site. We recommend HTTP caching or catalog files to improve performance.
    --> They don't want to have requests to their site from productive servers all around the world.

  • Not so trivial question about extending a wireless network

    Hello,
    I've always had Wi-Fi signal strength issues in my house. Two days ago my Linksys router died and I got the new AirPort Extreme. Things got a bit better signal wise. Feature wise things got a whole lot better! Which got me thinking about the next step.
    The two farthest corners of my hose are wired with CAT5E, and I have a gigabit router. My AirPort Extreme is on one of these corners, meaning I have a weak signal on the other corner. My question is, can I add another AirPort Extreme to the other corner, hook it on the wired LAN and have it extend my wireless network? I don't want to see 2 different networks. I want to see just my wireless network and have a strong signal everywhere. Can this be done?

    Actually a Linux server is my internet connection (has two NICs). All the computers in my house plug into a Gigabit hub. The AirPort express is configured as "Share a public IP address", instead of "Bridge Mode", because I want to be able to use the "Guest Network" feature (so cool!). Yes I have two DHCP/NAT servers, but they don't interfere with each other, as they are on separate networks. My main network is 192.168.1, my AirPort network is 192.168.2, and my Guest Network is 10.0.42.
    I will try both your suggestions and report back. It would be perfect if I could just plug the second AirPort to the Gigabit hub, but I don't mind chaining it to the first AirPort, if that's what it takes.
    This is turning out to be a really fun project and I might finally fix the wireless signal in my house after all these years
    Thanks!
    Erasmo.

  • Simple question about media activation

    Hi, Suppose i give someone a signed media (book) on a SD card. can he plug it into his device, connect to the internet and activate it ?
    the question is, does the activation process need to be done in the same session of the media download, by the same device ?
    Thanks

    The activation begin when you click on the gblink. So when you have the media file, you already did the activation part!

  • Question about DHCP Active IP Table WRT54G v2

    I'm seeing something that I need to ask about. On my DHCP Active table, I should only be seeing 2 mac addresses which is mine and my kid's pc. I only connect wirelessly. I have WPA set. I've noticed other mac addresses show up. Although, the ip addresses are similar to my 2 computers. One may be 192.168.2.103 and 192.168.2.104. I'm kinda new to this router DHCP thing, so if someone could explain if in fact someone else is on my network or how I can prevent it.

    Yes, It sounds to me like someone is using your wireless to attach to the internet. I have solved this problem  by setting up the security to us the WEP keys. Assign each one of your pc's a WEP key and that will prevent anybody from attaching to your network. Login to your router and under the wireless security go to the WEP key settings. The router will setup 4 KEYS, you can use any of them. Save your settings. Then when you attach to your network it will prompt you for one of the keys. Make sure you have written them down otherwise your going to have to reset your router and start all over. There may be different ways but this has worked for me
