We are a big AIX, Solaris shop ! After some meetings with the Oracle Sales guys, our managers have decided to move some of our RAC DBs to Oracle Linux.
Our Linux Admins (RHEL ) never configured machines for RAC before. They have only configured machines for App Servers before.
For the shared LUNs meant for ASM Diskgroups they have asked me how I want to have the LUNs to be ? Physical Volume, Logical Volume .. etc. They spoke about things like pvcreate, vgcreate.. etc.
Any idea how should the storage LUNs have to be presented to Linux RAC Nodes ?

• Help with Oracle 10g Client Connectivity from Linux to IBM SAN storage

Hello Oracle Experts,
This is my first post. My client is having oracle 10g database up and running in IBM SAN storage.
We have some NMS tools running in Red Hat Linux version 5. So, these tools require connectivity to Oracle database which is residing in SAN storage connected with the Fibre cables.
How do I establish the connectivity from Linux to SAN storage. If would be glad if you can explain me the steps and also if there is any pre-installation/post-installation, patches and procedures involved.
If it is IP based network we normally give the IP address of the host running the database server. I have no idea about SAN storage connected with Fibre cable.
Please guide me to establish the connectivity from linux 5 to SAN.
Thanks.
Regards,
RaviShankar.

Hi Rajesh,
Actually I will not be touching the Oracle instance SAN box directly. I will only access the database from another machine. I my case it is Linux box.
So, my question is how do you make the Oracle Client in Linux box to connect to Oracle instance running in another non ip based machine SAN storage.Install Oracle client on this Linux machine ..
Make sure you have network connectivity from linux machine to database server. You need to connect to server where db instance is running and you need not to bother about SAN storage.
make tns entry into client $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin/tnsnames.ora file.
Use sqlplus to connect to database using client.

• Question from a System Integrator

Hi I work for a bank and we have lots of corp. client using SAP as ERM, we provide PCard interfaces(flatfiles extracts) to these companies so they can import these files to their SAP and consolidate their card transactions/generates report etc. from within SAP.
Every company that I have worked for has asked for a different type of customized file, I was wondering does SAP has a standard interface for such integrations so it can make the life easier for this puropose.
Thanks and Regards

Hi Reza,
This sounds like a job for SAP's integration platform, SAP NetWeaver Exchange Infrastructure (XI/PI)!
Learn what you can from the following area:
https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/developerareas/xi
What you will need to do is send your PCard flatfile extracts to SAP XI/PI, which is the native integration platform to SAP applications. Beforehand, you will create/configure the SAP XI content which contains the interfaces, mapping rules, transformation, routing rules, etc. Once SAP XI receives your PCard flatfile, your SAP XI content will determine where it needs to go, what format it needs to transform to (e.g. SAP IDoc, SOAP, EDI, etc.), and send it to the respective SAP or non-SAP application. For every new company that you encounter, you will only (hopefully) have to change a few of the exisiting mappings to the new custom format they require. Thus, you can reuse and build upon existing work.
For certification wise, you will choose option 2:

• EDirectory users login issue(Linux Systems)

Dear team,
For PDC(primary domain controller)::
We have installed SLES11-SP3 and OES11-SP2 on the top of this.
After this, we configured DSFW and eDirectory.
Now, when we are trying to login eDirectory users from Windows System,, we are able to do this.
But when we trying from Linux Systems, users are able to login but not getting their respective directory (/home/user_name)
For ADC(additional domain controller)::
We configured same configuration as shown above by replicating tree.
For this server, when we are trying to login eDirectory users from Windows and Linux Systems, we able to do this successfully without any issue.
Both Servers we are using for high availability.
Please help us on the PDC.
Thanks

From your system Admin... really. If your's is a corporate, employer-provided BlackBerry, as your BES Admin.
If it is not, if it is a personal-owned device, it sounds like you have an IT policy on the device from a previous owner, etc., but you would need to verify that.

• 10G Database install on Linux 64bit File system Vs. Automatic Storage

Hi,
I'm installing Oracle 10G on a Dell 2950 server with an Intel 64 bit processor. The operating system is Red Hat Linux 4. It has a hardware RAID.
I've downloaded the Install Guide but I have a question about installing.
I'm confused about the File system vs. Automatic Storage management option. I will be installing on the local system, I will not be using a NAS or SAN.
Under Database Storage Options, the guide says that "Oracle recommends that the file system you choose be separate from the file systems used by the operating system or the Oracle software.".
1. Do I need to do that since I'm already using hardware RAID??
2. Which way is recommended / what do most people do: File system or Automatic Storage managment??
3. For Automatic Storage Management I read that I'd have to create an ASM Disk group that can consist of "a multiple disk device such as a RAID storage array or logical volume. However, in most cases disk groups consist of one or more individual physical disks". Do I need to reconfigure my partitions ??
I just need some input on what I should do since this is my first time installing Oracle on Linux.
Thank you.

Besides documentation there's a step-by-step guide :

• Using System Drive from PPC G5 as Internal Storage on my new Mac Pro

Hi all,
So, bad news is my old PPC G5 finally died on me last week, after years of faithful service. Since my Apple Care Protection Plan ran out years ago, and the cost to replace the parts I need are so astronomical, I've decided that it's time for a new machine. Good news is, I ordered my new Mac Pro on Monday! Here's my question:
I installed an additional internal hard drive in my PPC G5, and I want to utilize that drive, as well as the system drive from my PPC in my Mac Pro. What is the procedure for doing this, besides physically transferring the drives? Specifically, how do I use my old 250GB system drive from my PPC as extra storage in my Mac Pro?
Any help would be appreciated, and if I'm not being entirely clear with my question, please let me know.
Thanks!

Hatter's remark about coolant leak repairs being handled out of warranty is valid, though it may be too late for you if you have already purchased your MacPro. I, for one, can vouch that Apple is being responsive to the needs of those of us that bought top of the line G5's less than 4 years ago. Your dual 2.7 should have lasted longer. My dual 2.5 began to display symptoms consistent with coolant leak problems about three months ago. Even though Apple confirmed that it was not a coolant leak they still offered do the repair on their dime because of tardiness in repair and a failure to communicate with in a timely manner with me (what was estimated at 7-10 days took a month to resolve). When they were unable to fix my machine, they offered me a brand new 2.8 8-core Mac Pro in exchange! Always call and get a case number or take the machine into the Apple store to have them determine what the real issue is before giving up your hard earned dollars.

• Why can't I post a question from my new system?

Hello All:
I was just trying to post a question from my new mbp but it wouldn't allow me to do anything. It continually gave me a message highlighted in 'red' that i was;t allowed to modify or post anything. I've been asking questions for quite a while and have never seen this. I also happen to have my older bmp, also logged onto the 'Apple Discussions' site, open beside me. Can anyone explain this to me please? BTW, my new system obviously has Yosemite on it while my older bmp has Lion. Thanks in advance, to all those who respond.

ChitlinsCC, I'm adding your reloaders to my article on how to make using ASC easier.
Here is my ASC work flow...
1) I login.
2) Block the automatic 30 minute logout.
Unless you do something every thirty minutes you get logged out. The forum software waits to tell you this as long as it can to keep you in suspense ;-) . Filling out a reply is the exception to the thirty minute window.
Start an auto reloader.
Safari = SafariTabReloader
Firefox = ReloadEvery: "Reload web pages automatically"
Others = Reloaders | Cerberus - Support Center
You need to pick a page that will reload over time without stalling out. It's ASC. I've found my profile display the best to use. I get my Profile page after some logins. It's ASC. Change rccharles to your apple id.
https://discussions.apple.com/people/rccharles?view=discussions
Reply technique
Open a new browser window. Pick some discussion. Open a reply window. As long as this reply window is open, you will stay logged in. The 30 minute times is reset as needed by the ASC software.
3) I open another window to do my normal ASC browsing.
4) I have a FireFox bookmark to goto the discussions that I have participated in. I've modified it to add on the content stuff.
turingtest2 recommends. Change rccharles to your apple id:
https://discussions.apple.com/people/rccharles/content?filterID=participated~obj ecttype~objecttype%5Bthread%5D
5) Use turingtest2's generated links with the /content suffix as browser bookmark to the ASC discussions:
Site map of Communities and Categories
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2463
6) Adjust the ASC web page layout.
For FireFox
I run with Hiroto's modification to user content. This is the only way these forums are readable for me. How to adjust the format and layout of ASC Web Pages:
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-7501
For Safari
"ASCPowerTools is a Safari Extension designed to give more control"
http://www.etresoft.com/ascpowertools
7) Read and answer my old posts. I kind of memorize the time I last posted. ( It's way bad that apple eliminated the last poster to a thread. )
8) I use tabbed browsering. From a list of discussions, hold down the command key then click on the link. You get two tabs this way. The original window will keep where you have been.

• Use of Discovery System :question from a vendors perspective

Hi all
I have a question regarding Discovery System(DS) from a vendors perspective.
what can client actually do with the DS as soon as they buy it, beside using the demo scenario?
Going through the demo if the client decides to use Discovery system, What sorts of works are necessary for fitting the DS and replacing the existing system? Lets us suppose that the client is previously using SAP software(R/3), in this case how he can start using the DS?
Does he have to set a project, the size that of while implementing R/3, and use a great deal of resource for doing the fitting work, the add-ons and testing?
I am just curious about the approximate cost of the implementation and how the client can be persuaded for the ROI on DS.
I am really looking forward to hearing from you.
thanks in advance
sudeep

Hi Sudeep,
to your questions:
- planning migrations
You can evaluate what you will get (technically and functionally) after a migration by looking at the Discovery System already in advance. Customers use that option to shortlist and prioritize new stuff to implement after a migration.
- evaluate compliance tools
Almost the same as above with the difference in the tools/topics. Check out on the DS what you will get in the area of compliance tools without the need for a dedicated project/system.
- simulate business processes
Use the modeling and composition tools to develop new variations of business processes to better suite the needs of your business.
POC's = proof of concepts
Hope that helps,
