Questions on Receiving SNMP Traps

Hi:
- I have more questions on receiving SNMP traps:
1) the OEM plug-in can receive traps now, but when I click the metric, I see:
Error getting data for target test20. Exception: ORA-20216: ORA-06512: at "SYSMAN.EMD_MNTR", line 817 ORA-01403: no data found ORA-06512: at line 1
- the push descriptor looks like:
<PushDescriptor RECVLET_ID="SNMPTrap">
<Property NAME="MatchEnterprise" SCOPE="GLOBAL">...</Property>
<Property NAME="MatchGenericTrap" SCOPE="GLOBAL">6</Property> <Property NAME="MatchSpecificTrap" SCOPE="GLOBAL">31</Property> <Property NAME="MatchAgentAddr" SCOPE="INSTANCE">target_ip</Property>
<Property NAME="EventsnChasFanIndexOID" SCOPE="GLOBAL">...</Property>
<Property NAME="ContextsnChasFanDescriptionOID" SCOPE="GLOBAL">...</Property>
<Property NAME="SeverityCode" SCOPE="GLOBAL">WARNING</Property>
</PushDescriptor>
- is the Key Property needed ?
2) The alerts for some reason do not filter back to the all targets home page.
- When I click the Home tab and goto to the 'All Targets' pane, I do not see the alert generated by the OEM plug-in.
- What I am doing wrong ?
3) Is it okay to receive traps with the metric usage set to either: HIDDEN or HIDDEN_COLLECT ?
- Does this cause the errors I see in Q 1) ?
Thanks
John

Hi John,
Can you post the full definition of the metric? You would need to use the Key property for each key column in the metric description.
With the SNMP receivelet you can set up definitons for data points or alerts. I would assume (as I've never tried this ;) that if you set up the definition to be a data point, you would see data from the All Metrics page. To me, it wouldn't make sense for a metric that used the PushDescriptor SNMPTrap to have data to be viewed as the result of the SNMP trap coming is would be an alert. I will have to look into that. My gut reaction is that a metric with PushDescriptor SNMPTrap shouldn't even appear on the All Metrics page ...
To be clear are you saying that you don't see the Warning number under "All Targets Alerts" increase by 1 when you SNMP trap is caught and alert is generated? When this occurs do you see the alert on the target instance homepage?
In regards to HIDDEN and HIDDEN_COLLECT, I don't know what effect they would have on a metric defined for an SNMP trap to raise an alert. You definitely wouldn't want to use HIDDEN as this setting is for temporary metrics that are used in the caclulation of other metrics. HIDDEN metrics are not collected (or hence uploaded to the OMS) and don't appear in the UI. HIDDEN_COLLECT are collected, but do not show up in the UI and are not uploaded. I've never used this settings with SNMP trap metrics that are for alerts. If your metrics for the SNMP trap alerts do show up on the All Metrics page (I'd have to get something set up to look at this), then it could make sense to use the HIDDEN_COLLECT as the alert would still be generated, but the metric itself wouldn't be shown in the UI.
Let me find out the expected behavior from someone on the agent team.

• Which OEM Plug-In receives SNMP traps ?

Hi:
- Could someone please tell which existing OEM plug-ins are able to receive SNMP traps?
- I want to download these plug-ins and test my agent for SNMP trap reception.
Thanks
John

These plug-ins have logic to receive SNMP traps:
EMC Celerra
EMC CLARiiON System
Exadata Storage Server
You'd have to have one of these in your environment to use the plug-in to check out the SNMP trap
functionality.

• Anm 4.1 support for receiving snmp traps from CSS / ACE

Hi
Does anyone have an ANM 4.1 installation that is accepting snmp traps from their CSSes / ACEs?
If I configure CSSes / ACEs to send snmp v1 traps to anm, they never appear in the Monitor -> Events view.
I've tried both the ANM 4.1 Virtual Appliance and ANM 4.1 running on RHEL and it seems that there's nothing listening on udp port 162 to receive the snmp traps.
From the virtual appliance:
admin# show ports
Process : java (5999)
tcp: 0.0.0.0:40000, 0.0.0.0:40001, 127.0.0.1:10023, 0.0.0.0:10443, 0.0.0.0:

I notice that port 443 isn't in here and I'm accessing the web interface using this port so perhaps there's something else going on behind the scenes.
Can anyone point me in the right direction to get snmp traps shown as events in ANM 4.1?

• SCOM receiving SNMP traps from HP IMC

Hi all,
I've been tasked with creating SCOM alerts from SNMP traps which are forwarded from HP IMC. Each SNMP trap will arrive at SCOM from a single source (IMC server) but each will contain different information. Can someone suggest the best way for me to generate
individual alerts from this? I'd also appreciate any comments on alternative ways to do this (apart from simply using both systems separately!).
The environment is SCOM 2007 R2 on a 2003 R2 server.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hi
This comes up on the forums quite often so here are a summary of some of the best articles I’ve found on the net:
Configuring using the GUI:
The System Center Central team have a great series –
Part I,
Part II,
Part III, and
Part IV
David Allen has a good walkthrough here about creating
SNMP Probe based monitors.
Issues with using the GUI to create monitors with numeric expressions – see Raphael Burri’s
blog
SNMPVarBinds and the Alert Description Field –

oring Console:
Kris Bash at Operating Quadrant has some great articles on SNMP monitoring.
The only thing to be careful of before investing too much time in customisation for network devices on SCOM 2007 R2 is that when you move to SCOM 2012, you might well need to redo them as network monitoring has changed.

• Configuring SNMP Trap receiver on AIP-SSM sensor

I receive the following error message from my ASA5520 firewall when attempting to forward SNMP traps from my AIP-SSM20 sensor to a server on my Inside interface that is configured to receive SNMP traps:
ASA-4-418001: Through-the-device packet to/from management-only network is denied: udp src management: 10.3.21.2/32768 dst Inside: PPC0ES/162
Can I reconfigure the management IP address of the AIP-SSM sensor to connect to the Inside interface instead of the management vlan or does my SNMP server have to reside on the management vlan with the sensor?

Hi Subodh,
Yes, the AIP-SSM can operate in either inline (IPS) or promiscuous (IDS) mode. I would recommend you start by reviewing the following config guide, which shows you how to configure the ASA to pass traffic to the SSM for inspection:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6120/products_configuration_example09186a00807335ca.shtml
If you have any other specific questions, feel free to post back.
Hope that helps.

• About the packet format of SNMP Trap

hello all,
i would like to receive SNMP Traps, but i couldn't find the precise definition of Trap packet, as the follow:

﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣
the above data are copied from other snmp trap application, it's not the same as what i know, for example, the second byte should be the the whole length of the packet, but 0x81 is not the length, the third one is (0xE1), the same confusion, what does 0x81 after the 0xA4 mean? and i tried to produce a longer trap packet, the 0x81 was replaced by 0x82, could someone help me please

Your question is unclear.
If it is music, it shows under Music in Library.
This includes purchases and music from your own CDs.
You cannot change this.
Purchased under iTunes store is a playlist. The songs are still in the library.

• Configure SNMP Traps

Hello,
I am running SCOM 2012 R2 and I am trying to set up the server to receive SNMP traps from my HP Procurve switches. I setup 1 switch to send all traps to my SCOM server. The SNMP Feature is installed and the SNMP Trap service is disabled.
The SNMP Service is configured to the correct community and is setup to accept from all hosts. I setup a rule that targets Nodes and I setup an Event View that uses this rule. I trigger an alert on my switch and I see nothing in the Event
View. What am I doing wrong?

Hi,
Im glad you got the SNMP working.
You can either right-click an event, press Notification subscription and Create...
You can also go to Administration and create it from there. The setup is pretty straight forward, but there are some guides here:

• IP SLA SNMP TRAP.

Hello.
I'm using CiscoWorks IPM to configure SLA operation and reaction.
I'm receiving SNMP trap but I need to add the Admin Tag ID to the values also.
With actual configuration the tag is provided as an instance.
Many thanks.
Regards.
Andrea

Hi Joseph.
Another issue with IPM now!
Importing collectors from file (icmp-jitter operations): it creates collectors successfully but all with config failed status.
If I define one collector manually, on 7201 with 15.0, all run ok.
I can successfully import other collectors with echo operation.
Ideas?
Thanks.
Regards.

• Third-Party SNMP Traps on SMC

Is it possible to receive SNMP Traps from Third-Party applications on SMC(Sun Management Center)
If possible, how can this be configured on SMC and how can I import the Third-Party SNMP MIB.

Hi Mike,
Thanks. Does it means SunMC itself cannot receive snmp trap from other management software? And is Event Gateway a separate product with SunMC?You can send traps to SunMC, but it has no way to display them or alarm on them, unless you build a "module" to do so, which is getting into software development. Think of EventGateway as a generic module that can display any trap that you've defined filters for and optionally alarm on them as well, all visible in the SunMC GUI. It isn't bundled with the core SunMC files, you have to download and install it separately.

• SNMP Trap if a FEX goes down

hello,
need some assistance or help. I have a Nexus 7009 with a FEX N2K-C2248PQ connected. If the N2K goes down (e.g. power down) a syslog event is generated but no snmp-trap from the N7K to the snmp server. Interface up/downs or power supply failures are traped. This is the syslog event:
2014 Feb 13 10:47:47.594 n7009 %FEX-2-NOHMS_ENV_FEX_OFFLINE: FEX-113 Off-line (Serial Number xxxxxxxxx)
is there anybody with an idea?

We've found no solution out-of-the-box, even after some intense research.
But we implemented a simple workaround: Embedded Event Manager Applet. (EEM)
event manager applet EM-CHECK-FEX
description "Checks FEX for availability because no trap would be send"
event syslog occurs 1 pattern "FEX-2-NOHMS_ENV_FEX_OFFLINE"
action 100 snmp-trap strdata "FEX changed to OFFLINE"
action 101 syslog priority notifications msg TRAP_SEND: FEX changed to OFFLINE
The EEM tracks the occurence of the specific syslog-pattern.
If the syslog-pattern in question appears, a snmp-trap will be send.

• CAM Event Log: SNMP trap is received from switch [ ip address ] which is NOT in our database.

We keep getting thousands of entries in the CAM event log like this:
SNMP trap is received from switch [<ip address>] which is NOT in our database.
apparently, these aren't NAC'd switches. Why does the CAM see these and how can they be eliminated from the Event Log?
Thanks,

Matt,
Do you switches have the CAM as a host where they are sending traps? Check the running-config of the servers and see if you spot the CAM IP address as one of the snmp-servers.

• SNMP Traps Received are Incorrect

Hello,
I am running SCOM 2012 R2 and I have setup SNMP to receive traps from my HP Procurve switches. All my switches were bought at different times so they have different revisions. I opened a thread about this before, but it was not answered and has
died off so I figured I'd open a new one. If I connect to a switch and view the logs, they come out correctly. The entries would read "Port #19 is now off-line". That same entry in SCOM would read "19". I configured
the same switch to send traps to my PC and I used a simple SNMP trap receiver and the alerts were correct. I was told to update the firmware so I did. But even the switches with the latest firmware show up incorrect in SCOM. Does anyone know
how to fix this issue? HP said to update the MIB's on my management server, but you cannot do that with SCOM. The picture shows a PUTTY session and the logs are displayed correctly. The second picture is the app on my PC and the one on the
bottom is from SCOM:

Hello,
I did some more research and I found out that if I configure my switches to send all traps instead of critical, Not-info, or informs, then the traps are sent correctly. EXCEPT for any "Warning" labeled traps. Any trap that is "Port
#19 is now on-Line" will come through fine, because it's an informational alert. However, the alert "Excessive broadcasts on port #19" that is labeled as a warning comes in as only "19". So it looks like SCOM cannot decipher
a warning alert, but has no problem reading informational alerts. Please respond.
