Questions on redundancy for RAC

Grid Infra version: 11.2.0.4
Platform: Oracle Linux
http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e18951/asmdiskgrps.htm#OSTMG13711
Question1.
We use Enterprise class storage from Hitachi Data Systems called VSP for our diskgroup LUNs. They provided frame(hardware) level RAID protection. Hitachi SAN admins confirmed that the LUNs they allocate are created our disks from different failure groups. In this case , do we need to use High or Normal redundancy ?
Question2.
We are going to build a 3 node RAC cluster for a very critical application. For the +OCR_VOTE diskgroup, we are going to use LUNs from Hitachi VSP. SAN admins are going to allocate 1GB LUNs for this. In addition to the hardware level protection provided by Hitachi , we would like to have an ASM level redundancy as well. We prefer High Redundancy for  +OCR_VOTE diskgroup. So, how many 1GB LUNs will be required for this ? How is this calculation done ? The above oracle documentation just says "three way mirroring" for High redundancy , does this mean, that,  to protect data in a 1GB LUN we need another three 1GB LUNs (total four 1GB LUNs ) for High Redundancy ?

Thanks. Billy.
It looks like +OCR_VOTE diskgroup is a special case in which
the number of disks for Normal redundancy is 3
the number of disks for Hig redundancy is 5
Using three 1GB LUNs , i tried to create +OCR_VOTE diskgroup with High redundancy. But, it errored out saying
INS-30510 Insufficient Number of ASM disk selected
Action:    For a disk group with redundancy level 'High', at least '5' disks are recommended.
So, I had to allocate five 1GB LUNs in total to create a High Redundancy +OCR_VOTE diskgroup.
Confirmed from ML Note ID:428681.1
For Voting disks (never use even number of voting disks):
External redundancy requires minimum of 1 voting disk (or 1 failure group)
Normal redundancy requires minimum of 3 voting disks (or 3 failure group)
High redundancy requires minimum of 5 voting disks (or 5 failure group)
Any idea why do we need 5 disks instead of 3 disks for High redundancy when it comes to OCR_VOTE diskgroup ?

for RAC requirements I have to configure this card to use the interface name of ce1 but I have tried changing slots and puting /etc/hostname.ce1 file out there but it fails .. it always comes up as ce0.
my question is : How can I cofigure this card to come up as ce1 ? in the other box I had to do nothing .. i just placed the /etc/hostname.ce1 file with hostname and it works perfect.
can you please email me a copy of your response at [email protected] ?
    thanks

Look for "ce" instances in the /etc/path_to_inst file. You'll need to change the lines so that the hardware path you want is "1".
Keep a backup and write down the pathname. You can give that path to a 'boot -a' prompt if anything bad happens.

  • Is a gateway mandatory for RAC environment?

    Question:
Is a gateway mandatory for RAC installation, general on RAC environment?
    *..when yes, why?*
    Many thanks
I make this test with my only one RAC node
    1. Run with gateway:
    [oracle@linux1 ~]$ crs_stat -t

Instance orcl1 is not running on node linux1Something is false!

By default, the server's default gateway is used as a ping target during the Oracle RAC 10g VIP status check action.
Upon a ping failure, Oracle will decide that the current interface where the VIP is running has failed, and will initiate
an interface / internode VIP failover.
In above case, we used just one node for CRS installation, so the VIP coudn't failover to other nodes and thus reported additional error like :
CRS-1006: No more members to consider
CRS-0215: Could not start resource 'ora.dbtest2.vip'.
    Try ->
A parameter FAIL_WHEN_DEFAULTGW_NOT_FOUND in the file
    $ORA_CRS_HOME/bin/racvip to address this problem.
The following steps will fix the VIP starting problem for above mentioned scenario.
    1- stop nodeapps
    2- As root,
vi the script $ORA_CRS_HOME/bin/racgvip and change the value of
    variable FAIL_WHEN_DEFAULTGW_NOT_FOUND=0 .
3- start nodeapps and you should see the resources ONLINE
You may proceed with netca and dbca to create a RAC database after this.

  • Dedicated switches needed for RAC interconnect or not?

Currently working on an Extended RAC cluster design implementation, I asked the network engineer for dedicated switches for the RAC interconnects.
    Here is a little background:
There are 28 RAC clusters over 2X13 physical RAC nodes with separate Oracle_Home for each instance with atleast 2+ instances on each RAC node. So 13 RAC nodes will be in each site(Data-Center). This is basically an Extended RAC solution for SAP databases on RHEL 6 using ASM and Clusterware for Oracle 11gR2. The RAC nodes are Blades in a c7000 enclosure (in each site). The distance between the sites is 55+ kms.
Oracle recommends to have Infiniband(20GBps) as the network backbone, but here DWDM will be used with 2X10 Gbps (each at 10 GBps) links for the RAC interconnect between the sites. There will be separate 2x1GBps redundant link for the Production network and 2x2 GBps FC(Fiber-Channel) redundant links for the SAN/Storage(ASM traffic will go here) network. There will be switches for the Public-production network and the SAN network each.
Oracle recommends dedicated switches(which will give acceptable latency/bandwith) with switch redundancy to route the dedicated/non-routable VLANs for the RAC interconnect (private/heartbeat/global cache transfer) network. Since the DWDM interlinks is 2x10Gbps - do I still need the dedicated switches?
    If yes, then how many?
Your inputs will be greatly appreciated.. and help me take a decision.
    Many Thanks in advance..
    Abhijit

Absolutely agree.. the chances of overload in a HA(RAC) solution and ultmate RAC node eviction are very high(with very high latency) and for exactly this reason I even suggested inexpensive switches to route the VLANs for the RAC interconnect through these switches. The ASM traffic will get routed through the 2x2GB FC links through SAN-Directors (1 in each site).
Suggested the network folks to use Up-links from the c7000 enclosure and route the RAC VLAN through these inexpensive switches for the interconnect traffic. We have another challenge here: HP has certified using VirtualConnect/Flex-Fabric architecture for Blades in c7000 to allocate VLANs for RAC interconnect. But this is only for one site, and does not span Production/DR sites separated over a distance.
Btw, do you have any standard switch model to select from.. and how many to go for a RAC configuration of 13 Extended RAC clusters with each cluster hosting 2+ RAC instances to host total of 28 SAP instances.
    Many Thanks again!
    Abhijit

  • Teamed NICs for RAC interconnect

    Hi there,
We have an Oralce 10g RAC with 2 nodes. there are only one NIC for RAC interconnect in both servers.
now we want to add one redundant NIC into each server for RAC interconnect as well.
Could you please guide me some documents about this "teamed NICs for RAC interconnect "?
    Your help is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Scott

Search around for NIC bonding. The exact process will depend on your OS.
Linux, see Metalink note 298891.1 - Configuring Linux for the Oracle 10g VIP or private interconnect using bonding driver

  • – Enable high availability and redundancy for Cisco WAAS

    How this is available
    – Enable high availability and redundancy for Cisco WAAS appliances in data centers.
    Thank you.

    Hi,
You can serially cluster two WAE devices with the Cisco WAE Inline  Network Adapter installed to provide higher availability in the data  center if a device fails. If the current optimizing device fails, the  inline group shuts down, or the device becomes the overloaded, the  second WAE device in the cluster provides the optimization services.  Deploying WAE devices in a serial inline cluster for scaling or load  balancing is not supported.

    Hope this helps.

  • Is that true for RAC vs Redhat on cost?

    Hi,
    see below link, video,
    http://www.redhat.com/promo/streamline/HighAvailabilityDatabase/?intcmp=70160000000HUrE
So Redhat has better RAC solution.
Redhat RAC + Oracle Standard edtion, beat Oracle enterprise? performance, and cost.
    Peter

    > Is that true for RAC vs Redhat on cost?
No. The assumption from Redhat in this video is that the application and data can be neatly partitioned into customers and orders. (a shared nothing cluster approach)
If this is truly the case (which will be unusual), then there is really very little need for RAC - and many other solutions that are even better than this "offering" from Redhat. (exactly what are they trying sell here anyway?)
But as this neat and tidy border very seldom exist, how do you integrate the separated data sets? A few methods.
You can look at it from the db side. Distributed selects over database links (that can easily kill performance). Materialised views (more expensive SAN space). Etc.
You can look at it from the app side. Make the app use dual connections, one to each database. Move the joining logic and code from the database into the app. Of course, a great way to turn the app fat, make the database a bit bucket, and kick performance repeatedly in the nuts.
You can look at it from the app server side. Have the app server (with its scalability etc) access the databases, integrate the data and cache the data. Only.. isn't this exactly what a database does? And what about the cost for these app servers that needs tons of memory for caching. (Hint to Redhat: JBoss ain't that good and makes a poor database)
Is RAC expensive? That depends... If you go and buy huge SMP boxes as RAC nodes, your h/w is going to be as expensive as your s/w. If you buy MPP blades, your h/w cost will be a fraction of your s/w cost.
And that is a key point that is often missed. And one that I had all kinds of arguments with management about. There is a complexity factor in doing high availability, redundancy and scalability.
With MPP that complexity moves from the h/w into the s/w. So unlike the traditional approach (dating from buying very very expensive mainframe h/w), you buy cheap h/w. And as the complexity is in the s/w, you pay more for the s/w. Google's cluster of clusters is the prime example of this.
Thus the cost moves from the h/w to the s/w. So is RAC really that expensive? And remember that one needs to compare apples to apples here. If you price another solution to compare with RAC, that solution needs to provide the same feature set you want from RAC.
And that's where the Redhat video falls flat. They do not offer the same feature set. And if that is truly the feature set needed by the client, then RAC is the wrong architecture to use in the first place.

  • Question about redundant NW design

    Guys,
I have 9 L2 2960x flexstack and one L3 3560. I'M curious how i would design this network with as much redundancy as i can ?
Lest say i have 8 Vlans ,I figure setting 2/3 ports ether-channel/vlan trunk from L3 to first L2 switch in stack. Then for redundancy god for bid any one of my switches went bad or even flex cable ,setup another ether-channel for each switch back to the l3 switch or just connect cable without ether-channel and let STP do it's job, should be in blocking mode until other link dies ?
My real serious question is my I only have one L3 switch , so if that goes I'm screwed, so if i bought another L3 switch one how would i make it redundant for the other access switches to the net?, do i need hsrp/vrrp because on i only have ip base (SMI) not EMI, so that would not work, plus the isp router only has one connecting? Any hep would be great ,thanks guys
SO HERE MY SETUP I'm looking to design..
    NET <----isp router----->L3intervlan------>9 L2 flex stack 8 switches

If your 2960-S stacks contain the full 4 stack members and you plan to present a pair of 3560 EtherChannel uplinks to each stack, then Cisco recommend you terminate your two EtherChannel links on stack members 2 and 4. There is some logic to this, but see the following for details (figure 9): -
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/switches/ps5718/ps6406/white_paper_c11-578928.html
If you stick to a single core/distribution layer switch and use EtherChannel, then you won't need Spanning Tree to actively block an any uplinks between the core and access layer stacks. Instead, EtherChannel can load balance across all uplinks.
Yes, you are 'screwed' if the 3560 or ISP router fails. Shame you haven't got a 3750 instead of the 3560, because you could then buy another 3750 and stack them. There are pro's and con's to stacking a pair of 3750s verses a pair of 3560s though.
If you buy another core/distribution layer 3560, then you would need to rely on Spanning Tree to actively block the redundant uplink to each 2960-S acces switch stack. This is because you cannot run EtherChannel load balancing between both 3560s and each stack. EtherChannel will only work between each individual 3560 and each stack (a pair of 3750s would get around this limitation though).
Reference connectivity between a pair of core 3560s and your ISP router, HSRP would be nice and simple, but if not available, then you could implement layer-3 routed links. Either way, the ISP router would need two LAN interfaces, one connected to each 3560. You'll also need a direct link between the two 3560s.
If using routed links, then you'll need to establish routing between all three devices. This can be done with an IGP, such as OSFP, or static routing.
Any plans to add a second ISP link for redundancy? What's the primary circuit link type?
    Where's your firewall?
Hope that helps. Let me know if anything is unclear.

  • My ipad wont let me buy any thing i have about 26 dollars and it says i need to confirm my account with security questions that i for got is there a way to change them?

i have 26 dollars and want to buy an app for .99 it says i need to answer security questions but i for got the answers am i able to reset those questions or i can't

If you have a rescue email address (which is not the same thing as an alternate email address) set up on your account then the steps half-way down this page give you a reset link on your account : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5312
If you don't have a rescue email address (you won't be able to add one until you can answer 2 of your questions) then you will need to contact iTunes Support / Apple to get the questions reset.
Contacting Apple about account security : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5699
When they've been reset (and if you don't already have a rescue email address) you can then use the steps half-way down the HT5312 link above to add a rescue email address for potential future use

  • How can I have a collective AWR report for RAC database in 10gR2 and 11gR1?

    Plz correct me here
awrrpt.sql takes the snapshot at the instance level and incase we have 5 instances we have to take 5 awr reports for a particular period.correct???
If above is true ,any wayout to collect a single collective AWR report for RAC database which includes information on all the instances in Oracle 10g R2 or 11gR1 ?
    Thanks in advance
    Gagan

I have never come across a way for this. though I can n't say it is not there.
But I guess it may not be feasible too becuase as we know the current AWR report contains data which is specific for one instance.
Various hit ratios, top events, instance effeciency reports.... what not ..
It would be really nice to see something is a new format where it lists values from each instance in a single report.. I guess such a thing Does not exiist as of now.

In the event you are unsuccessful then contact AppleCare - Contacting Apple for support and service.
Another user had success doing the following:
I got some help from an apple assistant on the phone. It is kind of round about way to get in.
Here is what he said to do and it is working for me...
      a. on the device that is asking you for the security questions go to "settings", > "store" >
tap the Apple ID and choose view"Apple ID" and sign in.
      b. Tap on payment information and add a credit/debit card of your preference then select
"done", in the upper right corner
      c. sign out and back into iTunes on the device by going to "settings"> "store" > tap the
Apple ID and choose "sign-out" > Tap "sign -in" > "use existing Apple ID" and you
should be asked to verify your security code for the credit /debit card and NOT the
          security questions.
      d. At this time you can remove the card by going back in to edit the payment info and
selecting "none" as the card type then saving the changes by selecting "done". You
should now be able to use your iTunes store credit without answering the security
          questions.
It's working for me ...I just have to put in my 3 digit security pin from the credit card I am using.
    Good Luck friends!

  • I've had this iPad computer thing for a few months now. I used to just put in my password when I downloaded an app or such like. Now it wants me to set up 4 further questions and answers "for added security". How can I return to the old system?

I've had this iPad thing for a few months. It used to just ask me for my password, but now it is demanding I set up four questions and answers for
"added security". I don't want to do that, I just want to carry on as I was but the machine is preventing any app downloads etc.
Seems the stupid machine is in control.
How do I get it to listen when I threaten it with a good thrashing and a one way trip to the garbage unless it does what I say?

You may have no need for additional but Apple does. They don't want your iTunes account to be hacked and then go complaining to them that their security procedures are not up to standards.
    Chick3597 wrote:
So how can I continue in the good old fashioned way?
Its really absurd to even ask this in light of the information that you have been given already. The "old fashioned" way is gone. It's Apple's store, Apples's rules and IMO - its a wise decision on Apple's part.
You do not have to comply at all, but you will not be able to purchase from iTunes anymore, but nobody is going to force you to do something that you do not want to do.
