Questions on using templates [CS3]

Greetings,
I'm trying to figure out the best way to approach an InDesign task, and my rank-novice-level experience isn't cutting it. Normally I'd read through a gazillion help pages and do a bunch of tutorials to try and teach myself enough to answer the questions on my own - but I'm a new parent (~2 months), so don't really have the time to take my usual approach; indeed, it took me several days just to write up this question and post it. So any help is *much* appreciated!
What I'm trying to do: create ~80 cards for a board game. Each will have similar layout, so creating a template file seems like the way to go. I've never worked with templates before, but doing so seems straightforward enough for things like text, or for an illustration which would be different on every card. However:
Difficulty #1: Some cards are of one type - call it type A - while others are of type B. Several graphical elements are always the same for a given type, but are different for A vs. B. I'm sure there must be a simple way to say "this file uses all items for type A, and not B", but I'm not sure if this would be best done using different templates, different master pages, setting which layers are visible on an imported photoshop file, or some other technique. (Did I mention I'm a total novice with InDesign?)
Difficulty #2: There are half a dozen graphical elements (icons), each of which may or may not appear on a given card. Using templates or master pages for all permutations of their visibility seems like a bad idea. But if I simply delete the not-shown objects from each file (assuming one can do such a thing when using templates), that makes later changes (which might involve re-adding them) difficult. In Photoshop or Illustrator - both of which I'm more familiar with than InDesign - I'd simply make the layer/object non-visible; is there an equivalently simple way to "get rid of this object, but let it be easy to bring back" in InDesign? (I've found the "nonprinting" attribute, but that doesn't seem to hide it from view while editing, which makes verifying the layout as correct rather onerous.)
Trying to look ahead #1: Eventually, I'd like to create an InDesign document which imports all of the single card files into an easily printable layout (9 cards to a page); I'm told this is possible. Is there anything I should know to avoid shooting myself in the foot / making this task unreasonably difficult? (eg: if InDesign throws tantrums when you try to import multiple documents based off the same template, I'd sure like to know that before making 80 cards based off the same template.)
Many thanks to anyone who can help!
--Eric

I'd make the card file at the trim size, and add a bleed allowance if you need one. Export this to PDF withthe bleed, but NO MARKS.
Ah, here's where I display my novice status:
1. So you'd suggest just one card file, rather than one file per card all using the same template?
(If relevant: it would also be useful to be able to distribute 9-up PDFs of, eg, the only the 16 cards which changed in a particular revision.)
2. I'm familiar with bleed allowance, but am guessing at what you mean by "trim size", and don't know at all what you're referring to by Marks? My experience with actual pre-press production is pretty much nil.
I should probably mention, since I didn't earlier, that there is a downside to overriding master objects. If you apply a new master, or reapply the old one for some reason, the overridden objects remain and new master objects will be replaced where missing. Also, if you make any chages to an overridden object, that attribute, such as size or position, for example, loses it's link to the master and will no longer update if the master object is edited.
Mm, that is a difficulty; if I'm understanding this correctly, if I (eg) replaced or moved one of the icons on the master page, it would change on every card for which it was visible (printable), but not on those cards where it had been overridden to be non-printing - only a problem if I have to change which icons show on which cards, but that will certainly happen from time to time.
Is there a way to tell an object "stop overriding and re-load all your information from the appropriate master object"?

  • Some clients Can't open XLSX files in Libraries using template.dotx but can open xlsx files in libraries using template.doc

    If I create a new library using any Excel/Word template - DOC, DOTX, XLS, XLTX and then upload a XLSX document (or docx) then some of my clients experience issues opening the document.  My work around in the past has been to resave the document
    as XLS or DOC.  Interestingly Old Libraries (Libraries using template.doc) don't have a problem with xlsx or docx documents.  (This only works because most of the clients experiencing the problem only open a few documents and we only have to
    resave a few documents.  I don't know why these clients have this problem though.)
    We are now testing a new Terminal Server implementation.  One with OpenOffice instead of Microsoft Office.  We can't open xlsx files on new libraries but can on old libraries.  (docx files are not a problem though)  I found a couple of
    work arounds.  One work around is to click on the down arrow by the document name and select "Edit in Excel" which fails, but then clicking on the document name after will then prompt you to Open/save the document.  Clicking on Open
    successfully opens the document in OpenOffice.  (So rather tedious for the users but nothing has to be changed to make it work.)
    The other option is to create a template from one of the libraries that is working and then use it to create a new library and save my documents to the new library.  Then I'm prompted to Open/Save the xlsx documents in the library.  This
    option is less tedious for the user but then I have to go through and recreate any libraries using template.dotx.  Creating a new library using the standard Document Library option and selecting Word or Excel 2003 does not resolve the issue - it has to
    be created from a template created from an existing library that works in the Terminal Server implementation.
    My boss is opting for the latter option unless I can come of with an alternative that doesn't mean additional steps for the users.  Training is an issue because most of the Terminal Server users are shop floor workers.
    My question is, is there a patch or fix that addresses this issue or any other work arounds that would be less work?
    Additional Info:  Our Sharepoint implementation is the Enterprise version is installed but we do not have the Excel related Features activated (and these can't be activated due to licensing).  I'm not sure if that matters or not but it is
    a different configuration from how most SharePoint installations are configured.  SP1 is installed.  I have not installed any recent CU's.  Versions I see in Patch Status screen include 14.0.6029.1 (primarily) with some additional features
    reporting 14.0.6105.5, 14.0.6107.5, 14.0.6112.5 and 14.0.6114.5.
    Nancy Forbes

    We have tried a couple of additional things.
    We uninstalled OpenOffice and are testing LibreOffice.  I also installed CMIS from the SharePoint Administrator's toolkit, added the solution, and deployed it to my sites.  The "Producer" feature is activated on the site I am testing with.
    I created a new library and posted some docx, doc, and xlsx files to it.  All files can be opened as Read-only from the Library list.  The only way I have found that I can edit the files is to Open the Library with Explorer.   I then deactivated
    the producer feature and tested opening the SharePoint documents from Explorer and it worked the same.
    So am I misunderstanding what the CMIS Producer feature is for?

  • Why is Merge into single pdf using InDesign CS3 and not CS4 ?

    I'm new to this so the question may be trivial, but it beats me:
    I've created some InDesign files in CS4 and want to combine them into one PDF. So I opened Acrobat 9 Pro and
    navigated to "Merge files into single pdf". I chose the CS4 InDesign files to Add and clicked the Combine Files button.
    BUT, this starts up InDesign CS3 and not InDesign CS4 and returns a pop-up saying "unidentified error".
    Why is starting CS3 InDesign and not CS4, and what is the "unidentified" error ! ?
    As background I intially installed CS3 and then updated to CS4, leaving the CS3 applications intact. When I initially
    bought CS3, just before CS4 was released I may have created pdfs from InDesign as an experiment, but it is possible I have not done this
    since upgrading to CS4.
    Thanks for any help

    Thanks Michael, I was not aware of quality issues. Actually this is not really significant for my usage this time. What I'm doing is just using ID to capture notes/images/links etc in several free format ID documents. I then planned to merge them quickly into one pdf using Acrobat. I can easily shuffle the file order around to create a handy portable pdf reference document with the Merge feature.
    Doing something similar from ID seemed to me to require me to create pdfs for each ID doc and them to merge them in Acrobat. I did start to write a simple script to do this in ID, but I then realised that I wanted the ordering to vary and the ID files would likely to change. Then I found the merge and bingo, that solved it..... Well it solved it on another CS4 installation that had never seen CS3, but not on my machine which had been upgraded from CS3.
    I tried looking in the registry for obvious entries that might point Acrobat to use ID CS3 rather than CS4, but couldn't spot anything. I wonder if there is something buried in there ?
    Thanks again for helping
    Regards.

  • Question about a Template

    I use Dreamweaver CS3 and have a template for our web site. I deleated a graphic from this template and uploaded it, but it still shows up on the web site,
    what am I doing wrong?
    Thanks

    Here are seven common mistakes that will result in changes not propagating from Template to child -
    1.  Rename the Templates folder
    2.  Move the Templates folder to some other folder level in the site other than root level
    3.  Move a template out of the Templates folder.
    4.  Make changes to an editable region of the Template (which will not propagate)
    5.  Assume that Template changes will be effected by just uploading the changed Template file to the server without also uploading the changed local files
    6.  Corrupt the site cache so that the link between Template and child page is broken
    7.  Improperly create your child pages by simply opening the Template, adding page specific content, and resaving the Template with an *.html extension rather thanits *.dwt extension. (you can tell if this is the case by looking at the code on a child page - if you see anything like <!-- TemplateBeginEditable... then this is what you have done).  If you *have done this*, then recreate the child pages (in DW) using FILE | New > Page from Template, select the Template and click CREATE.
    The 6th problem can be repaired by using SITE | Advanced > Recreate Site Cache, and the six others can be fixed by just not doing them.  Have you done any of those?

  • Can i keep using bridge cs3 in combination with photoshop cs5

    can i keep using bridge cs3 in combination with photoshop cs5

    I have a question sort of relevant to this discussion. Had my 8800GT start to fail on me in my MacPro1,1 - in desperation I disassembled the card, cleaned it, applied fresh thermal compound/padding, and stuck it back in. To my amazement the card actually began working again! Before failing a few days later ; ;.
    I ordered a replacement 8800GT on ebay for a considerably low cost, but before it arrived my computer began behaving normally again. From what I'm understanding from this thread, there is absolutely no benefit to installing both cards in my computer at the same time? If that's the case, I'm going to tuck the backup card away and keep riding my self-repaired card until it crashes again.

  • Who uses Dreamweaver CS3 on Mac OS X?

    Howdy,
    I'm curious to know how many of you here use Dreamweaver CS3
    on the Mac? Not bothered bout you Windows users, I've used it on
    there and it's fine (although bulky and slow).
    I made the switch to mac a long while back, and coming from
    Windows and HomeSite (oh how much I love homesite!!!) the natural
    move was to go to Dreamweaver. So I bought a retail copy (along
    with PhotoShop CS3) for quite a bit of cash, and I don't use CS3 as
    its pretty damn awful on OSX!
    By the way, I NEVER touch the WYSIWYG part of Dreamweaver
    (wish I could delete all WYSIWYG stuff from it, as that what slows
    it down I'm sure)
    To name a few bugs (I'd like to know if you experience these
    too):
    1. It's very slow and bulky, I mean just moving the cursor to
    a new line in code view is slow, just doesn't feel good. It
    actually feels like its about to crash on me any minute! And I'm on
    a 6GB 8 cOre 2.8GHz Mac Pro... so its not my Mac :)
    2. I set my toolbars up to my own preference (i.e. I like to
    have the "Standard" menu showing and the "Document" one not) then
    suddenly out of the blue "Standard" has gone and the "Document" one
    is there. Sometimes I boot up and all is good, open a document and
    it disappears (along with the line numbers on the left), right
    clicking says its still there but it isn't.
    3. Certain folders on the left file view REFUSE to close! I
    collapse them, open another folder up (uncollapse) and what do you
    know, the other folder pops open again. Close and open dreamweaver
    its open again... I've never manged to close this particular
    folder, dreamweaver really likes it for some reason?
    There are plenty more, but they are the main ones!
    The unfortunate thing is I cannot find a good alternative on
    OS X for syntax highlighting, the fact that HTML elements are
    coloured differently is invaluable to me, and thats one of the main
    things I love bout Dreamweaver (not to mention the global replace
    feature that other IDE's don't include)?
    Bring HomeSite to OS X is what I say :)
    What is your experience of DW CS3 on OS X? Does it all work
    correclty for you? Or are you annoyed by it too?

    I plotted my escape from Microsoft for years before I finally
    knew
    enough about software and the technologies I was using and
    had
    sufficient money to make the leap. (I went for a top of the
    line MacBook
    Pro.)
    On the negative side, I've learned that the Mac isn't a free
    ride.
    Upgrading to Leopard was a wrestling match, as was upgrading
    to Adobe
    Creative Suite (largely because certain sales people sold me
    the wrong
    upgrade package - twice). I'm also bothered by a number of
    annoyances
    that sometimes remind me of my Windows PC.
    However, I'm working with a far greater variety of software
    programs
    than I ever had on my PC, and the annoyances seldom turn into
    the minor
    catastrophes that made life with M$ living Hell.
    So far, Dreamweaver is working fine for me. The biggest
    annoyance is the
    fact that it likes to jump back and forth between "Spaces,"
    though
    Spaces remains my favorite Leopard feature.
    I'm sorry you're having problems with yours - and I was
    shocked to hear
    that that Rosetta crap also applies to Dreamweaver. I'd never
    heard of
    Rosetta until I had some problems with my browsers. Enabling
    Rosetta
    fixed the problem, but, sheez - all that Rosetta business
    sounds like
    something that came straight from Bill Gates' living room. So
    I'm not
    sure if the problem ultimately rests with Adobe, Mac OS X or
    both.
    Unfortunately, I don't know enough about the situation to
    advise you.
    However, if you live near a sizeable Apple store, schedule an
    appointment with their "Mac Geniuses." I've gone in to see
    them at 7
    a.m. a couple times - free of charge - and they were a big
    help.
    If you're using Leopard, I assume you've already installed
    the two
    updates - 10.5.1 and 10.5.2. Ironically, the second update
    appeared to
    create one of the very problems it's supposed to eliminate.
    (Whether or
    not it's actually a problem is a matter of debate in the Mac
    community;
    it hasn't actually caused any problems for me.)
    You might also try posting some questions on Apple's forums -
    http://discussions.apple.com.
    If nothing works, and you do go back to M$, I certainly
    wouldn't hold it
    against you. If Apple and/or Adobe don't have their act
    together, then
    you can't blame people for returning to a platform that
    works. However,
    I have much greater confidence in both Apple and Adobe to fix
    their
    problems in the long run than I do in Microsoft. Even if you
    get
    Dreamweaver to work on your PC, will your other software
    programs work?
    In summary, I've learned that there's no free ride in
    computing. But I
    still prefer my Mac to M$, and I don't believe I've heard as
    many
    complaints about Dreamweaver on a Mac as I have about Vista.
    But do
    whatever's best for you.

  • How to develop forms using TEMPLATE.fmb

    hi,
    Anyone Should suggest me clear tutorial/links to learn forms development using TEMPLATE.fmb with step-by-step development procedure including forms development, register in apps.
    Thanks in advance.

    Abdetu is right, General EBS Discussion is the more appropriate forum for this question. Having said that, creating a new form based on the TEMPLATE.fmb just ensures your EBS Custom form has all of the basic EBS requirements for a EBS form. Developing for the EBS Framework has many requirements and I strongly recommend you review the Oracle Applications Documentation library. Select your EBS version and then scroll to the Standards section and review the following documents:
    <ul>
    <li>Oracle Applications Developer's Guide
    <li>Oracle Applications User Interface Standards for Forms-Based Products
    <li>Oracle Application Framework Personalization Guide
    </ul>
    If you are looking for general "Forms" tutorials, here are a few good links. Although a few of the following links are for older Forms versions, the concepts are still valid across all Forms versions.

  • Insert Flash Video using Dreamweaver CS3

    Hello,
    If I were to import an FLV into Flash CS3, I would have the
    ability to add text or images to the movie as needed. However, I am
    testing Dreamweaver's ability to insert a Flash video directly onto
    a web page, without the use of Flash CS3. I'm using Progressive
    Download with the "Halo Skin 3" component. My question is: can the
    Flash Video component inserted by Dreamweaver CS3 be edited somehow
    using Flash CS3? I would be attempting to add text to the first
    frame of the movie.
    Thanks.

  • Using PS CS3 on XP Mode on Windows 7 professional?

    I'm using Photoshop CS3 on an old Windows XP computer, which needs to be replaced soon.
    Would like to run CS3 on a new Dell with Windows 7 Professional operating system.
    Dell says that Windows 7 prof. is "Windows XP Software compatible" if I download and use software called  Windows XP Mode.
    Adobe says no, it won't work, but I'm not sure the chat representative understood my question.
    Dell says it yes, it will.
    Anybody have any experience trying this?
    Thanks

    Not sure about the Windows XP mode software. However, you can try running Photoshop CS3 in Windows XP compatibility mode by right clicking the executable file from C:\Program Files\Adobe Photoshop CS3\Photoshop.exe. If Photoshop is launching, then update Photoshop to 10.0.1 version from Help > Updates.

  • Send both Toast and Tile Notification simultaneously using Template feature of Notification Hub

    Hi, I am using WNS(Windows Notification Service) With Notification Hub to send Push Notifications to my WP 8.1 Application. I am basically sending localized notification using Template feature of Notification Hub. I have used Localized
    News example  reference for sending localized used.
    Here are my templates and how I am registering them, also How my Dictionary payloads look like :-
    Toast Template Method :-
    public static string GetToastText01Template(string param,string line1)
    return string.Format(@"<toast launch=""$({0})"">
    <visual>
    <binding template=""ToastText01"">
    <text id=""1"">$({1})</text>
    </binding>
    </visual>
    </toast>", param, line1);
    Tile Template Method :-
    public static string CreateSquare150_150BackgroundTextTemplateWns(string backText)
    return string.Format(@"<tile>
    <visual >
    <binding template=""TileSquarePeekImageAndText01"">
    <image id=""1"" src=""ms-appx:///ApplicationIcon_173_173.png"" alt=""alt text"" />
    <text id=""1"">$({0})</text>
    </binding>
    </visual>
    </tile>", backText);
    Registration With Notificaiton Hub (Part of Register Method basically) :-
    var toasttemplate = GetToastText01Template("NavigateToPageUri" ,GetToastCultureKey(culture));
    await _hubClient.CreateWindowsTemplateRegistrationAsync(ChannelUri, toasttemplate, tags);
    var tileTemplate = ToastFactory.CreateSquare150_150BackgroundTextTemplateWns(GetTileBackTextCultureKey(culture));
    await _hubClient.CreateWindowsTemplateRegistrationAsync(ChannelUri, tileTemplate, tags)
    Toast payload In terms of Dictionary :-
    Tile Payload Dictionary :-
    Note :- I have ensured that Keys for both the templates must be different during registering the templates so that both templates doesn't mix with each other.
    Problem :- When I am registering only one Template, doesn't matter Whether it is Toast or Tile, I am able to get the notification on my app successfully(Both of Toast and Tile ,individually, working fine). But When I register both of the
    Templates simultaneously or Individually, then none on them is working.
    Questions :-
    1) Can you let me know how basically Notification Hub select the Template from Payload Dictionary ? Like in case of two different registered templates.
    2) How can we send Two localized Notifications simultaneously using Template feature of Notification Hub?

    Hi Tanuj,
    Selection of template/registration always based on tags not based on payload keys.
    Just to explain, you have following two devices.
    device A - toast template,  tags: {"en-us", "toast"}
    device A - tile template , tags : {"en-us", "tile"}
    device B - toast template,  tags: {"en-fr", "toast"}
    device B - tile template , tags : {"en-fr", "tile"}
    If you call a method  SendTemplateNotificationAsync({“properties of template”}, “en-us”)) like this,  That will target the toast and tile both notifications to the device A.
    But if you just want to send the toast notification to device A, you have to call something like this,
    SendTemplateNotificationAsync({“properties of template”}, “en-us && toast”)). FYI Second parameter is a tag expression: Please refer following link to know more about tag expressions:
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/azure/dn530749.aspx
    To answer your second question, register template with language tag along with other tags (just like above example). Then when you are sending notification, include that tag in your tag expression.
    Example: SendTemplateNotificationAsync({“properties of template”}, “en-us && toast”)), this one send toast notifications to all “en-us” local devices.

  • Video or step by step tutorial link for create forms using template.fmb

    Hi,
    Give me link which provides step by step tutorial or video tutorial for the following:
    1. where should i save the template.fmb and library files in my local machine
    2. how to create customize form using template.fmb
    3. how to do test run that form in local machine (i'm asking this because the template form having reference to app libraries)
    3. how to convert .fmb to .fmx
    4. how to register that form in apps
    i understood about how to do the above process through existing threads in this forum, but i getting lot of errors and confusion while i'm implementing. so please tell me steps or give link which provides details.

    What Forms version are you using? While you're at it, what is your database and OS versions also? Can you provide us with an example of the type of errors you are getting?
    (i'm asking this because the template form having reference to app libraries)Developing Forms for Oracle Enterprise Business Suite (EBS) is different from non-EBS applications because of the EBS Framework and standard processing that occurs.
    Your BEST resource for developing EBS Forms is the Oracle Applications Documentation library. Select your EBS version and then find scroll to the Standards section and review the following documents:
    <ul>
    <li>Oracle Applications Developer's Guide
    <li>Oracle Applications User Interface Standards for Forms-Based Products
    <li>Oracle Application Framework Personalization Guide
    </ul>
    For most of your questions, you'll find the answers in the aforementioned documents.
    1. where should i save the template.fmb and library files in my local machineMy guess is that many of the errors have to do with attached libraries. The APPSTAND.fmb, TEMPLATE.fmb and all of the Apps Libraries (.pll) must be in the FORMS_PATH. Which means you will need to modify the FORMS_PATH registry entry for your Forms version (6i or 10g) and EBS version (R11 or R12).
    3. how to do test run that form in local machine (i'm asking this because the template form having reference to app libraries)You can't - there are too many EBS Framework calls that will generate errors when the form runs outside of the EBS Framework. You have to test your form in a Test/Dev EBS system.
    3. how to convert .fmb to .fmxUse the Forms compiler executable. (frmcmp.exe - on Windows)
    4. how to register that form in appsThis process is too indepth to explain in the Forum - read the Administrator Guides ;-)
    I get the feeling you are trying to learn this on your own rather than attend a class. My advise is to attend some classes. They are well worth the investment! :)
    As to videos, you might want to try searching uTube. I've seen some Forms tutorial videos out there in the past.
    Lastly, your best source of 'Forum' help is the General EBS Discussion forum.
    Hope this helps,
    Craig B-)

  • Speed diff btw my PB 12" & new MBP using Pshop CS3?

    very specific question obviously...
    I work as a photographer with digital image files ranging from 60-900 MB.
    I use a G5 dual 2.0 Ghz w/ 4 GB ram at my studio. but when I am on location I use my three and a half year old Powerbook 12" 1,25 Ghz w/ 1.15 Gb ram (max).
    It is so painfully slow.....
    what would be the speed difference (gain) using Photoshop CS3 if I get the new MBP 15" 2.4 GHz?
    thanks!
    alexander

    I haven't used Photoshop, but the speed difference should be massive, especially since you're opening such huge files.
    You're talking about four times more RAM, massively faster CPUs, and of course everything else in the system is faster too. It should be faster than the G5 desktop, unless the new version of Photoshop isn't coded as well.

  • How to get 2nd line in smartforms using template

    how to get 2nd line in smartforms main window using template. i have also defined loop .

    if possible can you try with the TABLES..
    Put one TABLE in your MAIN window
    create table lines as per your requirment...consider all lines like 6 for header, 1 for main, 1 for total
    Now, you will find three section under the tables: header, main, footer...
    in header section, create a table line, assign one of the proper lines from the line types.. repeat for your all lines.
    in main section, you can access your data form the loop.
    the footer secion will be called, just after the main will be finished.
