QuickTime control of external devices like lights, fans

I am looking for a way which a QuickTime movie playing on a Mac can at certain timecodes trigger external events, such as turning on or off lights in a room. Nothing super-fancy but some combination of software and hardware that can send simple on/off commands to electrical outlets.

Unfortunately, no. You see what I was getting at, getting QuickTime to generate triggers that something else could handle. Trouble is, I don't know what that "something else" might be.
It's got to be do-able, though. This is basic show-controller stuff. Timecode-based controllers have been used to operate AMX-type lighting controls, motion bases, environmental controls, and just about anything else you can think of, literally for decades. To be able to trigger those controls based on a synchronized event track in a QuickTime movie seems to be a pretty obvious step.
I suppose another option if you're really clever would be to develop an "event track handler" for QuickTime that would allow you to create a specific event track using whatever syntax you require for your devices. But that makes it a system level programming project. I know I'm not quite that clever!

    No.

  • How to make external devices (like iPods, etc.) NOT mount as connected drives when plugged in via USB to a Mac?

If I plug my iPod (or a thumb drive or whatever) to my Mac's USB port, the device appears as a icon representing a connected drive on my Mac's Desktop.
    This is normal, expected behavior.
HOWEVER, in some cases, I'd prefer that the device not "mount" as a connected external drive.
With thumb drives or external USB drive, of course, I want them to "mount" so I can transfer files on or off them -- that would be the only possible reason to connect an external drive like that.
But with other Apple devices like iPods or iPhones, there are TWO possible reasons to connect them to a Mac: either to "sync" them or transfer files on/off them; OR, to simply recharge the device's battery. (Or, both sync and recharging functions at once.)
For those people who use their Apple devices in ways that require transferring files (i.e. most people), then having the device "mount" as a connected device is a desirable behavior.
But in my circumstance (and I bet there are a lot of people in a similar circumstance), I have no need or desire to transfer any data to or from my device every time I plug it into my Mac: I'm plugging it in SOLELY to recharge the device's battery.
Specifically, in my case, I have a 6th-gen iPod Nano, and I use it exclusively as an FM radio and a pedometer. I don't have any mp3s or songs or any other external files loaded on it, nor do I plan to add any in the future.
The only reason I ever plug it into my Mac is so that I can recharge the iPod's battery.
But the "problem," which is a minor one I admit but a problem nonetheless, is that every time I connect the iPod to the Mac, the iPod appears as a "connected drive" icon on my Mac's desktop. Which means that I'm not supposed to just unplug the iPod  when I'm done -- first, I have to find its icon on the Mac Desktop, and then drag the icon to the Trash, to "unmount" it -- and only then can I freely unplug the iPod without getting an error message telling me that I shouldn't just disconnect connected drives without first properly unmounting them.
This would be bothersome enough if I only had to do it once per connection, but in the case of the iPod Nano, there's no way to tell how recharged it is while it is in the act of recharging, so that to see if I'm "done," I have to unplug it, check the battery status, and if it's not fully charged, re-plug it back in. So that each time I recharge it, I often have to unmount the drive several times, depending on how impatient I am.
There has to be a way to prevent the mounting of the drives of devices that one is connecting simply for the purpose of recharging. But how?
Strangely, I also have an old iPhone, and when I plug that in for recharging in the same way, it DOESN'T appear as a connected drive on the Desktop. I'm not sure how I managed to do this, but long ago I must have changed some setting or preference for this to happen. And by now I've forgotten what I did.
I'd prefer that I could change the "mount/don't-mount" setting on a device-by-device basis -- i.e. make it such that this particular iPod doesn't load, but perhaps a different iPod would load -- but if that's not possible, then is there a way to stop ALL iPods and iPhones from loading as connected drives when plugged in?
(I'm not talking about appearing as connected drives within iTunes -- I'm talking about appearing as an icon on the Desktop in the Finder.)
And please don't tell me to just buy a wall charger! I prefer to recharge off my computer if possible, using the charging cord that came with the iPod.
I presume there's some simple setting to toggle this on or off, but I haven't yet found it. Any clues would be appreciated. Thanks!

Well, I already know about that Finder Preferences option, but that is not what I'm looking for. Why not? Because I still need CDs and DVDs to appear on the Desktop and mount properly! If I uncheck the "CDs, DVDs and iPods" option, then I lose the ability to access CDs and DVDs, which creates a whole new problem for me. What I want is to not mount iPods only -- actually, what I really want is to not mount this particular iPod -- but if that level of specificity is not possible, then I want to exclude just iPods from mounting, without also condemning CDs and DVDs (or whatever) to invisibility.
Also, I was confused by the way the Preference is worded: It says "Show these items on the Desktop," with a series of options to check. But this phraseology seems to mean that the unchecked items will still "mount," they simply won't appear as Desktop icons. One would still have to "Eject" them using a menu command, rather than dragging the icon to the Trash -- right? Or am I mistaken, and is the Preference Pane simply badly worded, and when they say "Show these items on the Desktop," what they really mean is "mount these external devices as connected drives." So that if a category is unchecked, then they won't load as external drives at all?
But if so, then what purpose could possibly be served by inserting a CD or DVD that is not recognized by the computer? And if it isn't recognized, then it would seem that there would be no way to ever Eject the CD or DVD disk. Right?
Thus, if I uncheck that Finder Preference box you suggest, one of two outcomes will result:
-- Either CD, DVDs and iPods are still mounted, they just won't appear as icons on the Desktop; but they would still need to be Ejected via a menu command, which doesn't solve my problem.
-- Or, CDs, DVDs and iPods are not mounted or recognized by the computer at all, which means that if I insert a disk into the disk drive, it will get stuck there forever, since there's no way to Eject it, since the OS doesn't recognize that it's even there. Which is thereby a new problem.
Either way, I'd have a problem! Or...? Clarification, anyone?

  • Restored iMac from an MBP Backup giving problems with external devices

Recently, I restored from an MBP Leopard OS Time machine Backup into a new iMac 27".
Restoring process ran smoothly and took like an hour to recover my files and applications from the external disk time machine backup and after that the new iMac had everything my old MBP used to have but the OS. So far so good.
But now I'm having problems connecting external devices, like the very same external disk to set my time machine backup or a Cannon Printer.
The iMac can recognize and attach the external HDD (iOmega 1TB), I've succesfully formated it several times, but as soon as the backup process starts it will idle after backing 200MB or so and the HDD will be abruptly disconnected.
Regarding the MP610 Cannon printer/scanner I used it smoothly once from this iMac, but after that it's been impossible to scan or print again, and it keeps saying it is connected to an MBP instead of an iMac!
I already read the other related topics but my case is slightly different than those, so I will appreciate anyhelp you could provide me.

When you say you restored, what does that mean? Did you do a full restore, installing the system from the backup onto the iMac? If so, you've probably borked the system and will have to reinstall it. See:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2186
Also, if you restored applications, it's possible some of those applications are not installed correctly or are not compatible with SL. Printing problems are common among folks who have not updated printer drivers to SL-compatible versions.

  • External device not showing - XH A1

    This is my problem:
I have a Canon XH A1 HDV cam connected to my MBP via Firewire 800. I can capture video without issues. What I am trying to do now is playback my FPC sequence on an HD monitor. I have done this many times before with an XL2.
The camera is grayed out in the Video Playback list, even after I refresh external devices. The only option available is Digital Cinema Desktop.
VTR is set to HD (not auto or DV). Easy setup is at HDV - 1080p24 Firewire Basic
    Can anyone help? Please...

    Hi -
I don't believe you can monitor HDV material through the firewire output while you edit. You can send it to the camera using the Print to Video Command, through the firewire, but because of HDV's long GOP structure, it will need to render it first.
In order to view it on an external monitor without rendering you would need an external device like the Matrox mini to do the conversion, but the Matrox requires an Express34 card slot to work - which not all 15" Mac Book Pros have.
*Mr, Shane Ross provides this explanation:*
    #25 HDV external Monitor Viewing
Shane's Stock Answer #25 - HDV external Monitor Viewing
To view HDV on an external monitor in high definition you are going to need to purchase a capture card, like the ones Decklink (www.decklink.com) or AJA (www.aja.com) offer. They will both play out HDV in real time. The catch is that you cannot view this on a regular TV or NTSC monitor. Since this is HD, an HD monitor will be needed. HOWEVER, both cards are capable of down converting the signal so that it can be displayed on an SD monitor. This won't be color accurate
The real reason why you can't monitor HDV through a Firewire camera is because Firewire HDV cameras don't decode incoming HDV streams and route them to their outputs like DV cameras do.
Good options for you are the Matrox MXO2...$500...coupled with an HDTV. Or a Matrox MXO (DVI connection) coupled with an Apple 23" display gets you good quality.
And there are the Decklink Intensity and Intensity PRO cards as well, and the AJA I/O Express...
You can, however, view HDV out via firewire as DV...lowering the resolution to that of DV, but still viewable. This is not full quality nor should it be used to judge the quality of your footage or used to color correct to. This is just a way to view the footage on a large monitor.
Here are some examples of some of the possibilities:
DV or HDV sequence output to an SDI signal on a third-party interface
An uncompressed NTSC or PAL sequence output to a DV FireWire output
An HDV sequence output to a DV FireWire output
Sequence and output formats must have compatible frame rates. For example,
sequences with a frame rate of 60, 30, or 24 fps can be output to a 30 fps device,
but not to a 25 or 50 fps device.
    Hope this info helps.

  • External device to control ipad scrolling

I play guitar and want to use my ipad to display music and lyrics as I play. I want to set up an external device that I can use my foot to control the scrolling (only) of content on the screen...is it possible? I could build/modify the hardware side (maybe mouse type device?) to work for me, if the app/software side is available...

Found it! There is an app called OnSong that scrolls and pages music on an iPad & a Bluetooth pedal switch system that works with it (for an additional $120). I will really be worth having instead of carrying 10-15 song books and volumes of sheet music!

All the info you do with your image files is stored in the Lightroom Catalog file. The Catalog file cannot be located on a network it must have a physical connection to the computer.
While the Catalog is in use a LOCK file will be temporarily placed alongside which prevents its use by any other device.

    Hi cdag144,
I'm sorry to hear you are having these issues with your iPad. I also apologize, I'm a bit unclear on exactly what you are seeing when you try to sync. If you are unable to sync because your iPad isn't showing up in iTunes at all (you mention it showing up as a device on the computer), you may find the troubleshooting steps outlined in the following article helpful:

  • I like to be able to control an external application (Specifically ICQ)

I like to control ICQ, a web based massaging application. (Http://www.ICQ.com). My knowledge of ACTIVE X is very limited so if some one can recommend a web page that explains ACTIVE X at a very beginners level I will appreciate it. Also if some one could mention what sort of information I need from ICQ to enable me to do that it will be very helpful.

There are some applications which are designed to be controlled from other programs and systems (Microsoft Office is a good example for me). On the Windows Platform, the method of control is ActiveX.
The ActiveX functionality must be part of the program design. If an application is not designed and written to allow ActiveX control from external applications, you cannot use ActiveX for controlling this application.
The lowest common denominator for controlling applications which offer NO interface for external control is simulation of keypresses through the System. Needless to say this is extremely awkward and problematic.
Bottom line: Not all applications can be "within reason" controlled by an external program. If ICQ does not offer
an interface for external control, then maybe there is a similar product which has the same functionality as ICQ which DOES have an ACtiveX interface.

Please move the MacBook Pro forum. Thanks
Also if you mean by external is via the headphone jack then try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so. There is a little switch in the headphone jack that disconnects the speaker when the headphone jack is inserted.

  • Is there a way to observe/control iOS devices like ARD for desktops/laptops?

For desktops/laptops I can use Apple Remote Desktop to monitor (and control) devices remotely. This is very useful for supporting users.
I don't think there is such a thing for iOS devices, right? I do not mean VNC on an iOS device to observe/control a PC, but the other way around: use a PC to observe / control an iOS device remotely.

I have not heard of a way either.

  • Satellite L750 will not register external devices

About a few days ago my wireless mouse, a Logitech M325, stopped working. I replaced the batteries and performed tests with official software and determined that the USB port was not being read. Soon after I noticed that my iPod would not sync or charge and would not open in Windows Explorer (I use Windows 7).
Additionally none of my SD Cards will be read on my computer.
Please help, this is very frustrating and I'd like it to be fixed ASAP!

You could try to reinstall the USB hubs and controllers which are available in device manager.
Disconnect all external USB devices firstly. Then go to control panel -> device manager.
Here scroll down and find the USB hubs and controllers.
Delete each USB device and reboot the system.
After new reboot, it will take some time until windows system has recognized and installed the USB ports again.
Then you should connect an USB mouse and should test the port functionality.
Even if your wireless mouse would not work again, I strongly recommend to test the USB ports in connection with different USB devices like USB flash memory stick or different USB mouse
Just because one USB device does not work, this does not mean that your USB ports are faulty.

  • HD-DVD won't play on Satellite P200-123 Unable to output to external device

    Hi,
I bought a P200-123 yesterday. One of the first things I tried after the Vista installation initially completed was running an HD-DVD. I know the disc is fine as it works in my Xbox 360. Unfortunately, it didn't work with the supplied HD-DVD player software - the play icon lights up and then I get this error message:
"Unable to output the video to an external device. Please switch your display device by pressing the Fn + F5 keys after ending the application."
I don't have an external display connected to the laptop. I tried different discs but all gave me the same error. I then carried on updating drivers and installing a bunch of Windows updates. I repeatedly tried the HD-DVD player throughout the countless updates and reboots but I always get the same error. Out of frustration I bought PowerDVD Ultra. That plays the movie for about one second before giving me an error:
"Cannot initialize secure display session - (Error Code = 0122)"
The error dialog goes on to say that the error could be caused by an incompatible graphics driver or beccause I'm using a dual-monitor setup. The reference to dual monitors is common to each player application so I'm wondering if the problem is in that area. I haven't connected a secondary display but when I look at the standard Windows display properties dialog or the ATI Catalyst control center app I can see a disabled secondary display. I'm assuming that's normal - there's no obvious way to remove the disabled secondary display.
Can anyone help me get HD-DVD playback working?
    Thanks,
    Ian

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I downloaded that and tried it yesterday but it didn't help :-(
I noticed that a couple of other unrelated things stopped working after the last batch of Windows and Toshiba updates - for example, the Event Viewer snapin wouldn't load and the built-in .NET Framework 2.0 installation appeared to be corrupt until I ran sfc to repair it. I was getting pretty sick of the whole thing so I took the drastic step of nuking the C: drive and installing Vista Ultimate from my own retail DVD.
One hour later I have a working Vista Ultimate installation and, interestingly, I installed the Toshiba HD-DVD player and it now works!!!
It was a pretty drastic method to get it working - and not everyone is going to have a retail copy of Vista just lying around - but at the moment everything looks good. I still don't understand the original root cause (or which software update messed up Event Viewer/.NET Framework) but I guess it's kind of a solution...
