Quicktime error, won't open.

Hi there, my name's Brian.
Just joined the forum because i'm having some trouble running my quicktime software.
Whenever i'd open up a picture or quicktime, i'd get the msg asking if I want to upgrade to pro so i'd just hit "later" and it'd continue.
I just upgraded my NVidia graphics card drivers but now whenever I try to open up Quicktime that box starts to show but it's all grey and then disappears.
I've tried going to the Quicktime control panel and update but I get the RUNDLL error "an exception occured while trying to run C:\windows\system32\shell32.dll,control_rundll"
"C:\programfiles\quicktime\qtsystem\quicktime.cpl,quicktime"
It was working fine before the driver update but that was a recommended update so I don't know what I should be doing now.
Thanks
Brian

Coincidentally, I also recently updated Nvidia drivers (for the 7900GS) and my Quicktime also has issues. I cannot run the updater within the program without getting a rundll exception (I have to use the Apple Software Updater) and when I use Kodak Easyshare software I can no longer player videos within Kodak. At first I updated Kodak's software, but the issue remains. I get this error:

I am running the latest version of Quicktime (stand-alone). I've uninstalled, cleaned the registry, re-installed. Same issue. I re-installed the prior version (7.1.5) and same thing.
I can open the program with no problem and I can watch trailers on Apple.com, BUT I've noticed I have to click the HD links TWICE to open the program. Then, the program opens twice.
Any ideas from anyone would be appreciated. Minor annoyance, but I used the Kodak software ALOT and that's my main issue.

  • IPhoto error, won't open, says it needs the most recent version

I have an early 2009 mac pro desktop with 6 megs of ram. iPhoto error, won't open, says it needs the most recent version to work but the most recent version won't work either because I have Mountain Lion. I downloaded iPhoto from the App store and the store said "you can't download the most recent version because you don't have Mavericks - would you like to download an older version?" So I said yes and downloaded it. It is actually the Mavericks version that downloads anyway. So I used an older version from my other computer and updated it to version 9.4.3. When I try to open it it says you need the most recent version. My library is on an external drive which was downgraded from Mavericks back to Mountain Lion because Mavericks wouldn't work properly on my computer. Now no version will open.
What can I do? Thank you for your help in advance.

    The exact error message is:
THe library "iPhoto Library" cannot be opened. To open it, you must upgrade to the latest version of iPhoto. Then the Quit button is at the bottom of the dialog box.
I did install iPhoto 9.5 when I installed Mavericks, Keep in mind that all of my photos are not on the boot drive but they are on an external drive. I then got rid of Mavericks and did a fresh install of Mountain Lion then I copied the contents of a previous drive that only had Mountain Lion on it. 9.5 wouldn't open in Mountain Lion so I copied an older version from another computer and updated it to 9.4.3. 9.4.3 says you must upgrade to the latest version and 9.5 says you need an older version. So I am stuck now.

  • Quicktime player won't open anything. Mac pro

My quicktime player won't play anything. Need suggestion on what to do.

Can you launch QT by itself, not clicking first on a file? If so, then use Open and navigate to your file. Do you have any other media players installed (Windows Media Player, Realplayer)? Maybe one of them is set as default. Also browse through the More Like This threads to the right to see what others have tried.

  • Quicktime Pro won't open an MPEG movie file with the Quicktime icon

What am I missing? Not getting? I have several MPEG movie files that proudly sport the Quicktime icon, but the Quicktime app tells me they're not movie files.
If Quicktime won't open them, is there conversion software I can use?
    So much for productivity.

Didn't even consider it. I thought that because the file displayed the Quicktime icon and because I have Quicktime Pro, that Quicktime would play the file.
Unfortunately, this is a common misconception. However, now that you understand the problem, you can work on a solution. Basically, if by MPEG your are referring to common MPEG-2/MP2 content 'multiplexed" to an MPEG container, these can be played in the QT Player (or Front Row or iTunes) if you install the QT MPEG-2 Playback component ($19.99). However, be advised that this is a video only component, so it does not make "muxed" AC3 MPEG-2 files playback compatible with the QT player. Luckily, if you do decide to install this component, the free MPEG Streamclip application will allow you to play or convert such files to any QT compatible audio and video format for which you system is configured. Or, if all you want to do is play MPEG-2 video files without investing in the QT component, then you can view them with VLC but may have trouble converting them to a QT compatible format. HandBrake will also convert them without investing in the MPEG-2 component, but greatly limits your conversion possibilities. I personally would recommend buying the component as Neil recommended since it offers the greatest flexibility for playing without conversion, as well as, the most conversion options for all normal MPEP-2 Program and Transport Stream files you are likely to encounter using QT 7 Pro and/or MPEG Streamclip depending on the specific source content what you want to do with the final files.

  • GENERAL ERROR WON'T OPEN HELP!!!!!

for a few months now, i've had a problem that, every week or so, won't allow me to save. I've since gotten over it (i never found a solution) by exporting it to a quicktime file every time it happens, so i can re-import the changes i've made that day. Today, it gave me the error message again (it reads: "Unknown error: cannot save"), and so i exported it and quit w/ out saving. But when I restarted it (and eventually the computer) nothing will open and i get "general error" message (no ID #). I have sifted through other posts, but no one seems to have the exact problem as me, or else nobody offered a solution. I've made this entire project w/ FCE 2.0.3, I've trashed prefs, i've tried opening from an autosave... nothing. This has nothing to do w/ exporting to quicktime movie or logging/capturing, which i have seen other people have trouble with.
also, found today that it is only this project that seems to be corrupted- others will open. but i still need this project!!!
fyi, yes this has been cross-posted in the FCE forum, but a) nobody answered it there b) some people only check this one and c) i find a LOT of problems apply to both systems

Did you get your answer in FCE forum?
Corrupted projects happen often when you bring a Photoshop file in that is in CMYK space.
If you can find that file -- remove it.
    Or -
Move your scratch folder to another location... move all your title files and pic files to another location.
Your project file should open then and you'll be asked to reconnect the media. DON'T. Reconnect one by one from the application's browser until you get the corrupted file.
Re import that file (as I assume...) into Photoshop and change it RGB space. Then reimport.
    Good luck,
CaptM -- I'm awesome too AND a real Captain!

  • Quicktime player won't open

I am trying to open Quicktime, but I have the same problem as with 'Time Machine' - I click on both in the Applications window in Finder, & they do a little 'jump' & then sit there, doing nothing. Quicktime even appears in the dock, but I still cannot make it open by clicking on it.
Is there any other way of playing AVI videos? I have loads of these - NO problem playing them in Windows, but of course Apple has to make everything really difficult. The Quciktime website tells me these files are supported, but when I actually did manage to open it, it told me it could not play it. Then it shut down & I've not been able to open it since.
Is there actually a direct e-mail address where we can write to Apple support technicians? I have only had this Mac a few months but am posting almost daily on here because nothing seems to work properly, I'm getting sick of it.

Try an OS reinstall. Those should work w/o any issues.
Alternatively, contact Apple Service, iMac Service or Apple's Express Lane. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine.  Might also apply to new machines the first 90 days. BTW, the AppleCare Protection Plan's the best insurance policy available for desktop machines. Get it if you don't have it before contacting Apple.

  • JVM error, won't open applets ?? "install on demand" message

suddenly my JVM won't work. I got a message from "Install on demand" that I needed a JVM to open the page I wanted. It took me to windows who doesn't offer a VM. I installed updates from SUN. Still nothing?? It was a chat site that requires applets. What can I try now? I suspect some spyware, but nothing is showing up with Ewido or Norton scans.

I run with that "feature" turned off.
Use Sun's http://java.com "Verify Installation" link to check your Java installation.

  • Quicktime 10 won't open .mov file

I use MPEG Streamclip (v1.9.2) to create .MOV files. However, since upgrading to OSX Lion (10.7.1) and QuickTime 10.1 (501), I can no longer play the .MOV files with QuickTime. As a test, I downloaded QuickTime 7.6.6 (1709) and it's able to play the .MOV files fine.
Does anyone have any thoughts on why this is happening? I know that MPEG Steamclip has a new beta version, but I don't think it's the issue here.

Does this also apply for files in .m4v made with Handbrake? oO
Because when I try to play my movies with Quicktime Player it says a codec is missing... (Perian is installed)

  • Superdrive will not burn DVDs - no space error, won't open in Finder

When I tried to burn an image onto a DVD-RW my Superdrive stopped working properly.
It said there was not enough room on the disc to burn the image, even though the disc was blank and the image the correct size for the disc. The same happened after doing a full erase. Then I found that the disc did not appear in the Finder, so I could not check the free space. Any recordable DVD (+RW or -RW) that I put in the drive fails to appear in the finder, on the desktop or in disk utility under the MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-85J. If I put in a pre-recorded DVD, such as a movie, it does appear in the Finder (with no eject button) and plays normally. CD-Rs appear on the desktop, but not in the Finder devices column. Double-clicking the desktop icon gives me a burn folder. With DVDs there is no desktop icon.
Can anybody explain this erratic behaviour?

Sorted. I reset the SMC, PRAM and NVRAM and it seems to be working. The DVD icon has returned to the desktop and now I can see that the blank disc has 4.38GB free, whereas the image I was trying to burn is 4.48GB.

  • Quicktime won't update, itunes won't open...having no luck :(

I'm getting an error message when I try to download the current quicktime. iTunes won't open without it. The error message is below:
It says "Could not open key:
HKEYLOCALMACHINE\Software\Classes\QuickTimePlayerLib.QuickTimePlayerApp\CLSID. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel"
I tried a link that was posted in another discussion about manually editing the registry and it did not change anything. I still get the same error message. I've actually looked over quite a few suggestions in other discussions (like deleting quicktime all over the place and trying to reinstall it) and nothing seems to work. I finally was able to get the newest version of itunes downloaded. However, when I go to launch itunes it will not open b/c it says that i need the newest version of quicktime (which i cannot download). When I try to download it via standalone, it gives me a new error message similar to the original except now the location is QuickTime.QuickTime rather than QuickTimePlayerLib.QuickTimePlayerApp. Before I uninstalled QT, I was able to edit the registry for the QT Player LIb and App. Since they did nothing I unistalled it again. However, after I uninstalled it, (and reinstalled just itunes which it finally updated) I tried to reinstall and it would not install because the new error message is the most resent one above... in the registry it will not let me change/save any permissions changes to QuickTime.QuickTime. I've again tried to uninstall it but now QT isn't there at all. I've been at this thing for a week and nothing seems to be working... any suggestions? I would love help!!!!
Oh, and I don't know if this will help at all, but I have an ipod mini from like 2003... when I couldn't get itunes to update at all to the current version I decided to uninstall itunes and my ipod mini... so then i had to reinstall my ipod with the cd software that came with it which also installed itunes... it worked fine and would open... then I tried to update itunes again and somehow i managed to get it to update itunes... however, when i go to launch itunes it won't let me b/c of the version of quicktimes i currently have. Thanks in advance for any help!

so i tried to download the windows installer update from the link you gave me but now i'm getting a different error and it won't let me download the installer. The error reads:
    Windows Script Host
    Script: C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\IXP000.TMP\StartMsl.vbs
    Line: 1
    Char: 1
Error: ActiveX component can't create object: 'Scripting.FileSystemObject"
    Code: 800A01AD
    Source: Microsoft VBScript runtime error
I have no idea what this means or how to fix it. Please help!

  • Quicktime won't open mpg files

I am trying to create a DVD with chapters/scenes from a single .avi file that won't open in Quicktime (nor iDVD nor iMovie).  It's the basic QT, not pro.  I can convert the .avi file to .mpg (using Burn or other tools), but the resulting file (.mpg) won't open in Quicktime either.  Seems if it won't open in Quicktime, it won't open in iDVD or iMovie, where I'd hoped to include chapter markers and menus.
Since this was created by Burn on my Macbook, I'd expect the resulting .mpg file to be readily useable by Qucktime, but it isn't.  Can someone first explain why QT won't open the file (VLC will open it), and second what other approach I might use?
    Thanks!

OK, again, I'm not using the avi file, but the mpg that was created by Burn from the avi file, so I wonder if the original is so "muxed up" as it might seem.  No mpg inside of an avi, if I understand you both correctly.  The original AVI is thus far MIA though I do think I burned it to a data disc.
Having the original AVI would let see what compression codecs were used to create it, how compressed the video was, see the encoded dimensions/display dimensions if PAR encoded, and give us some idea as to how much visual quality may have been lost in transcoding the AVI to MPG, as well as, save you one level re-compression if you were then able to start your work flow with the original source file. Too bad you can't find it.
"Muxed" in the case of your MPEG2/MP3 MPG file refers to the fact that the audio and video content is broken into blocks of video data which are interspersed with blocks of audio data in a single data stream to provide synchronizarion. QT files, on the other hand, contain up to 99 tracks of audio, video, and/or other forms of data the playback of which are all sybchronized to an external clocking system and is the main reason your MPG file is not natively QT compatible,
To play MPEG-2 content, whether in an elementary or a multiplexed stream, in a QT based application, you must first purchase and install the Apple QT MPEG-2 Playback component ($20). Even then, for any of the unsupported audio compression formats you would need a secondary application like MPEG Streamclip (free) to bridge the spatial to temporal synchronization problem to make it compatible Apple QT-based applications like QT, iMovie, GarageBand, iDVD, etc. So, if you plan to use the MPG file as your source file, you will either have to purchase the MPEG-2 component or use a third-party application work flow.
All that said, I think I'm understanding how to go about this now.  Oddly, I do have Perian installed (I think because I once had a similar problem and had hoped it would help) and it's up to date.  It does not seem to fix my problems though.
This is why you need to pay attention to the actual codecs used in the AVI file and ensure that you have removed any third-party components which may conflict with the Perian component package as detailed on the support page of the Perian web site.
I'm using this file to try to learn a little about iDVD and iMovie (after all these years of using Macs!), so I had hoped to take these first steps without buying a commercial product.  I don't mind spinning my wheels trying different workflows so long as I'm learning and have options.  Garageband is an interesting idea as I had no idea it would handle video files.  Perhaps Audacity would also do the trick?  I don't have any need of creating markers at any particular points in the file, just something to ease the process of moving from one place to another in the video.  Markers at an even time interval would be fine, and I'd love to create a menu that allows navigation, though even that isn't crucial.
To learn more about iDVD, use help file, view the tutorials, and visit the iDVD forum. However, before you can do anything in iDVD, you will have to convert your MPEG2/MP3 MPG file to a QT compatible compression format. On my system, I would simply open the MPG file in MPEG Streamclip (which already has the Apple QT MPEG-2 Playback component installed) and convert the MPEG-2 video to AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec) and the MP3 audio to Uncompressed audio. The resulting MOV file will then import to any Apple QT-based edit/conversion application on your computer (assuming the source file and your software is in proper working order).
I may end up trying Toast as I've considered it in the past and my needs aren't very sophisticated.  But being largely without work and mostly self-employed these last two years has made me a bit of a miser...
Toast should save you the cost of the MPEG-2 Playabck component but does cost much more than the $20 component. I am still using Titanium Toast 10 Pro but it may be aout time to upgrade to 11. It is a really good general purpose conversion/authoring appliction for all forms of target optical media.

  • Quicktime won't open .mov files anymore

I have a MacBook Pro with OSX 10.5.8 and Quicktime Player 10.2. Since upgrading to OSX 10.7, I can no longer open most video files I have collected with a .mov extension. These files open fine in Real Player or VLC.  Quicktime, however, won't open it with a message that a required "codec" isn't available. I've noted that some in this situation have found Quicktime Player 7.6.6 in the Utilities folder. I don't have a Quicktime Player in the Utilities folder.
