Quicktime won't open for me and I can't locate it in activity monitor. Haven't used it for a year or so.
Quicktime won't open for me. It was fine about a year ago. Not coming up in activity monitor. What do I do to fix this?
Would appreciate any help as I am not particularly computer savvy.
thanks
Janine
Greyed imaged in the Import dialog box mean you have already imported the photos into Lightroom, so there is no need and no benefit to importing them a second time.
Just go to the Library module, search for the desired photos, and resume working on these photos.

My mail won't open or close and I can't shut down my Mac
Same here.
Can't be. This forum covers pre-2006 iMacs; MacBook Pros have a completely different architecture and therefore different issues. For Mail problems, the best place to post is in the forum for your OSX version from the list here:
Mac OS & System Software
BTW, my wife and I both use Apple mail and have not had any issues from about OSX 10.6 on. Admittedly, when Mail was introduced with OSX thirteen years ago, it had some real problems, but they seem to have been fixed. -
I am using UPK developer 12.1.0 single user. My sofware has crashed and needs reinstallation. Please suggest how can I take back up of my source files. I am unable to open the application and i can not locate the library backup folder on my local machine.
Also, does reinstallation takes the back up automatically or the files will be lost. Please help. Here are a bunch of scripts to get folder size under all circumstances. Take your pick.

I have had recurrent problems with my computer crashing for the past several months that I was not able to fix. I was downloading and installing updates for Firefox when the computer suddenly and completely crashed - just an immediate shutdown. When I was able to reboot it, Firefox would no longer open, and I got the following error message, along with the 'bong' sound or an error: C:\ProgramFiles\MozillaFirefox\js3250.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error...." The crash in the middle of the download corrupted Firefox so that it could no longer be accessed. HOW CAN I RECOVER MY FEW HUNDRED IMPORTANT BOOKMARKS? Any help you can give me with this would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!! Ron
Do you have a PowerPC processor or an Intel processor?
Firefox 4 and later require at least OS X 10.5 and a Mac with an Intel processor.

I recently purchased QuickTime 7 Pro to convert avi files to mov files for editing on Imovie. However, QuickTime won't play the files. How can I get them to play and how can I convert them to mov files?
Both the AVI and the MOV file extensions refer to the file container and not the compressed data the file contains. Both are generic file containers in that each may contain any valid combination of audio and/or video data that is compatible with the codec component configuration of the system on which the file was created. On the other hand, whether a file is playback compatible, conversion compatible, and/or edit compatible depends on the data actually contained in the file container. So, you are basically dealing with two separate issues here—the container and what is inside it.
Basically, if you want to make your files ediit compatible with iMovie, you must change your file container to one that is acceptable to iMovie and convert the data to edit compatible audio and/or video compression formats as may be necessary. The best approach is to determine what codecs were actually used to create the original AVI files and add them to your system if possible. In most cases a codec package like Perian can be added to your system's codec component configuration to may the AVI file playable. Once they are playable, in the QT 7 app then they can be chnged or converted to file types and compression formats that can be edited in iMovie. (While Perian handles most codecs commonly used to create AVI files, it does not handle all possibilities and, while the Perian codec package still works under cureent Mac OS versions, its development group has decided to drop further development/support of the package.)
Background: AVI is a file container originally developed by Microsoft back in 1992 but for which official support was discontinued about 11 years. Despite its limitations, Windows users still tend to use this file based on its open source ease of use and generic nature, thus, making its use so popular that most users are unwilling to switch to more modern but less generic file types. Since some AVI legacy compression formats have never been transcoded for the Mac or use beyond OS 9 or OS X PPC platforms, it is often important to know what specific compression formats are contained in the AVI file to know which codecs to add to your system and which not to add in order to avoid possible codec conflicts.
You can use many different converters to convert AVI files to iMovie edit compatible files. Most third-party apps contain their own buit-in codecs which do not relay on the Mac codec component configuration. Free ones, like HandBrake, usually have limited conversion capabilities while those that have more varied outputs are usually commercial in nature and will cost you additional cash. QT 7 Pro or the free MPEG Streamclip app allow you to access you own system's component configuration and use any available codec component like DV, AIC, MPEG-4, H.264, Photo JPEG, etc.—all of which are iMovie compatible for editing purposes—but only after making the AVI file QT 7 player compatible.
In order to determine what compression formats wewre used in your AVI files you can
1) Try checking the Finder "Info" window,
2) Use the "Inspector", "Media Info", or "Properties" window of any player app that will open the file, or
3) Use a general media utility app like "MediaInfo" to read the file characteristics. -
Photoshop shut down while I drew a picture, now the file is broken and I can´t fix it, photshop won´t open the file and I have tried repearing it with different programs. What should I do? I spent 6 hours on the pic and I dont even have a screenshot or anything.
You don't even say what platform you are on, or any other details that may help others assist you.
If you are on a Mac, try opening your file in GraphicConverter (they have a demo version) if that doesn't open it, nothing will, in my experience.
I assume you have tried Adobe Illustrator already to recover.
You may also have a JPEG of your complete file (flattened) in Bridge Cache.
On the Mac you'd find it in your User ~Library (NOT the Root Library ):
Users > yourname > Library > Caches > Adobe > Bridge CS6 > Cache > 1024 > jpg(fileID)number Filename.psd.jpg
The user ~Library is hidden, but you can make it visible for an moment or two. Ask Apple if you don't know how.

iPhoto won't open. Modified and created dates say 12/31/69. Help! OS is Tiger. Older G4 Powerbook.
As a test launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and try to create a new, test library. Can you? If you can then your current library is damaged and needs to be repaired.
Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download IPhoto Library Manager 4 for OS XC 10.6.8 and iPhoto 8.1.2 and later or iPhoto Library Manager 3 (for OS X 10.5.8 and iPhoto 7.1.5 and earlier) and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu (iPLM 3) or Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu (iPLM 4) option.
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)Hello Niebby,
According to the description of the issue provided looks like some change has been done in your system. Most probably a change in the installed codecs. I would suggest you to check whether the required codecs are installed under the folder "/Library/QuickTime".
If reinstallation is needed you can check this post "QucikTime Codecs Installation" to get some details about how to proceed.

Installed Flip4Mac - Quicktime won't open
Hi all,
a couple weeks ago, a friend sent me a video.wmv and i installed flip4mac so i could watch it.
It didn't work, i was annoyed but merely asked my friend to send it in another format.
Today, i wanted to open quicktime but the Icon in the Dock has a question mark over it. In the applications folder there is no Quicktime.
Searching via finder brought no satisfying results, and yet i cannot install quicktime, because there is already a newer version installed, so it tells me.
how can i find and resuscitate the quicktime that is apparently installed?
and how can i make the wmv files work?
Thanks all.
azzlehow can i find and resuscitate the quicktime that is apparently installed?
If you have accidentally moved the QT 7 Player app to a new location and orphaned the dock alias, then use Spotlight to do a general search for it on your local drive(s). If you have deleted the QT 7 Player app, then there is probably no satisfactory way to "find and resuscitate" the missing player and you would have to downloard the appropriate installer package for the problem system in order to use an application like Pacifist to extract/install the QT 7 Player app manually.
and how can i make the wmv files work?
Once you have the QT player installed, check to ensure the installed Flip4Mac WMV component is compatible with the the QT 7 Palyer you've just re-installed. If it isn't, remove the installed Flip4Mac WMV software, download and install the proper "older" version of the Flip4Mac WMV player component which is compatible with the "older" version of QT as recommended on the Flip4Mac web site. -
