R/3 Product Hierarchy in BW data model.

Hi all,
We have been told by our implementation partner that the scenario described below is not feasible to design in our BW 3.5 system and if we were to implement this scenario there would be a significant amount of user maintenance to maintain the hierarchy structure in BW.
I was a query user in previous BW versions and my datawarehouse modeling experience is mostly in Cognos and Business Objects. The scenario described below is very easily implemented in these other datawarehouse software packages and I would be suprised if SAP does not have a standard solution to address the problem.
I would like to understand if:
(1) Yes this solution can be easily implemented in BW 3.5
(2) A brief explanation on the design approach, implementation, and considerations
I am already familiar with the link on http://sap.help.com that explains BW hierarchy design and considerations, but I would like to get a "real world" understanding of an approach and design and if you experienced this requirement.
Thank You in advance for your input.
Regards,
-Anthony
<b><u>Scenario:</u></b>
In R/3 we have modified the standard delivered product hierarchy structure for material master from 5,5,8 to be 5,5,4,4.
The 4 levels represent: BRAND --> PRODUCT LINE --> PRODUCT CATEGORY --> PRODUCT SUBCATEGORY
Our intent is to use this structure to satisfy current BW reporting requirements for COPA and R/3 Billing infocubes.
In BEx Explorer we would like to perform product analysis using the following dimension paths:
BRAND --> PRODUCT LINE --> PRODUCT CATEGORY --> PRODUCT SUBCATEGORY
PRODUCT LINE --> PRODUCT CATEGORY --> PRODUCT SUBCATEGORY
PRODUCT CATEGORY --> PRODUCT SUBCATEGORY
We are told that since we have multiple values at the BRAND node we will not be able to perform grouped reporting the starts at PRODUCT LINE node(which would be independent of the BRAND node). For example:
BRAND,          PRODUCT LINE,          PRODUCT CATEGORY
HONDA,          AUTOMOBILE,          CIVIC
HONDA,          AUTOMOBILE,          ACCURA
HONDA,          BLOWER,                  CIVIC
HONDA,          MOTORCYCLE,          ODESSY
FORD,          AUTOMOBILE,          EXPLORER
FORD,          BLOWER,                  EXPLORER
FORD,          MOTORCYCLE,          CHAMPION
So for example we would like to start our dimensional anaylsis to show all AUTOMOBILE or BLOWER sales independent of the fact they were for HONDA or FORD.
In other datawarehouse systems I have either: (1) created 3 dimensions called: BRAND, PRODUCT LINE, and PRODUCT CATEGORY or (2) created one dimension called BRAND with alternate dimension paths for PRODUCT LINE and PRODUCT CATEGORY. I am not sure if this is feasible in BW.
We were also told in order to achieve this design a structure would have to be maintained in BW every time we introduce a new material master and the material master would need to be manually entered into the structure so that reporting can be achieved for both the standard structure and the alternate structure(s).<b></b>

Antony ,
there will be maintenance involved every time you add a material to the material master. However you could maintain the hierarchy through a GUI also depending on the number of values.
Ideally if this can be maintained in a table in the source system , it can be imported into BW. Otherwise if you were to maintain it in BW , you will have a lot of problems when :
1. Change in the hierarchy - A new Product Line coming in and many product category onwards change over to the new product line.
2. Viewing the changed hierarchy over time - If you have GM and a separate category called Daewoo , earlier they were separate and now they are one - what are my product sales due to the merged entity vis-a-vis separate entities earlier...
Things that you will need to consider from a design stand popint are :
1. Should the hierarchy be time dependent ?
2. Should it be maintained in the source system or in BW?
3. Change process for the same - Flat file / Manual
4. Estimate of how frequent the hierarchy would change?
5. Will you have display hierarchies - Ad-Hoc hierarchies to view certain combinations?
Depending on the above your hierarchy creation can go from easy to complex and hard to maintain.
One way to amintain it is to have a SAP ABAP program to populate a hierarchy table to have the relations in R/3 and transfer them into BW. You could automate it in such a way that the hierarchy is changed every time there is a new material
Otherwise , there can be a flat file to create the relationships
Or someone could log a request and if the change is minimal it couldbe done thru a GUI Interface provided by BW.

  • Generation of DDL similar to Oracle Designer (Data Modeler 3.0 EA1.)

    Hi,
Will the production version of SQL Data Modeler allow the creation of separate DDL files similar to that which Oracle Designer does? For example, I can create a sequence number generator in Data Modeler (DM) and then make a call to that in an Object Type method. However the DDL file that is generated by DM has all DDL in one file. This would allow to take dependencies were taken into consideration, that is create the sequences before object types, packages and tables, then object type bodies, package bodies, etc...
    Thanks,
    ScottK

At this stage we do not support multiple files. We do plan to do this in the future. However you can work around this by repeating the DDL generation for the different objects types you want to have files for.

  • Data modeler

    Hi,
I am not pretty sure whether it is the right place to post this question. I am working as Sr. Oracle DBA and thinking of learning and switching my profession to Data modeler.
But I wanted to know like as per hierarchy wise is data modeler position in one step up to oracle DBA?
Also can anyone suggest me any forum for data modeler?
    Thank you in advance.

    user2995637 wrote:
You are perfectly right. I am completely with you. But in every field there is graph of levels, No necessarily, and certainly not necessarily so narrowly defined.
even organization has hierarchies. And International Frambo Corp may say a Data Modeler is "higher" than a DBA, while United Widget Corp may say just the opposite. And Dunder-Mifflin Paper may not even have a job title "Data Modeler" even though they have an entire team of people performing that function. And two companies probably even define the individual jobs differently. And even if a company has the two job titles, defined as you perceive they should be defined, they may very well have them at equal 'levels'. So anything I might say about how those job titles relate in my organization probably mean zero in your organization.
Job titles mean only and exactly what the individual organization says they mean.
You should be pursuing the work you find enjoyable and fulfilling. Not some artificial title based on an artificial concept of what is "higher". Have you actually done any data modeling? Do you find it interesting? Why would you want to pursue that type of assignment vs. what you are currently doing?
So just thought of gather info on that as well.

  • No version control in Data modeler

I am using Data Modeler 2.0 and Subversion as repository.
Is it correct that Data Modeler does not have build in support for version control? When I add, delete or updates objects to the designs I have to do this with a Subversion client.
    This is pretty annoying.

You are correct there is no built-in support for version control in the initial production release of the Data Modeler. We are working on adding this in a future release.

  • SQL Developer Data Modeling - import from Oracle Designer Model

    Hi,
I do want to try to import model from a Designer repository.
The first step is to create connection to the repository (9i version).
I have created the one, however any attempt to test the connection or to go to the next step simply finishes with error "4", without any valueable message.
    Any idea or suggestion ?
    Thanx.

A clarification of the Data Modeling feedback application and this forum. The developers are part of the SQL Developer development team, but as for all our features, each developer has a focus area, so the Data Modeling developers will tend to answer those questions. There will not be a separate Data Modeling forum, so once we're production all SQL Developer Data Modeling questions will be on this forum. We want to encourage all users to get into the habit of tagging posts. Having the posts tagged means that users can skip them if they're not their focus area and users can search using the tags. The more tags are used in all the forums the better. You may well find find the answers to your questions are outside this forum!
As SQL Developer Data Modeling in in its first early adopter phase, we have provide a feedback application, where users can provide feedback, log bugs and ask questions. We did the same for SQL Developer before it's initial production release and found this to be very useful for the product.
I'm happy for "How To" questions to be on this forum, as the answers benefit the broader community.

  • Product hierarchy doesn't works in ECC 6.0

    Hello guys!
I'm working in a project that migrate to ECC 6.0 and now is facing an error in Material Master (MM01) when try to select a product hierarchy in Basic Data 1 view.
When the matchcode of product hierarchy is used, the "Next level" button of popup windown doesn't open the product hierarchy. I check with an another consultant that don't remember the SAP note that fix it.
    Anyone knows this SAP note?
    Thanks a lot,
    Rodrigo.

Is your setup of product hierarchy consistent ? How many levels have you defined ?
In ECC 6.0 can you let us know the support pack & the patch level details (if not sure, obtain this info from your basis person)
Also it would help if you can upload screenshots of the setup done for the product hierarchy & the issue you face in material master.
Just for your info, I am on ECC 6.0 & do not face this issue.

    Hi Everyone,
We are maintaining product hierachies up to  5 levels in Materail Master Sales data.
If a brand with Product hierachy level 1 and 2 is obsolete and not going to be used in future, i want to block all the postings to this brand (product hierarchy).
can this be achieved by configuration in Product hierachy maintenance OR guide me how this can be done.
    Thanks & Regards

    Hi ,
how can i block or lock the materail (master record) for all postings?
Setting a flag for deletion will do? OR is there any other process to Block the material in customizing?
Here the requirement is we identified a brand which is maintained product hierarchy in Sales data as OBSOLETE.
So we dont want any postings should be allowed for the material master in which this Product hierarchy is maintained.
what is the best approach that will meet this requirement???

  • Issue in Hierarchy data upload from R/3 for info object Product Hierarchy.

    Hi,
I am trying to upload the hierarchy data from R/3 system for Info Object Product Hierarchy.
    Insted of business content info objects (0PRODH, 0PRODH1, 0PRODH2, 0PRODH3, 0PRODH4, 0PRODH5, 0PRODH6), we are using customized objects (ZPRODH, ZPRODH1, ZPRODH2, ZPRODH3, ZPRODH4, ZPRODH5, ZPRODH6).

Please let me know any possible solution to handle this issue.
    Thanks.

    Hi voodi,
Insted of using the info object 0PRODH1, we should use customized info object ZPRODH1 which I added already in the external characteristic in Hierarchy.

  • Data Model Exporting - MDM to Erwin or another data model tool

I would like to export the latest MDM physical data model in production to any erwin modelling tool or any othe data modelling tool

To export the schema of an MDM repository to an XML file:
           1.      In the Console Hierarchy tree, right-click on the MDM repository whose schema you want to export and choose Export Repository Schema from the context menu, or select the tree node and choose Repositories ® Export Schema from the main menu.
If the top-right pane is currently displaying the list of MDM repositories, you can also right-click on the repository in the grid and choose Export Schema from the context menu.
           2.      Click Save to close the dialog and export the schema.
Schema files are stored in XML format in a user-defined location using a user-defined filename. The file contains the schema definition only; no table or field content.

  • Export Master Data Model from MDM solution.

    Hello,
I have been assigned the requirement to integrate our product with your “Master Data Management” solution. To be more specific, I need to import the Mater Data structure (model), from your companies MDM solution, into our product to build its table/column structure. What I am looking for is technical documentation that will help me make this possible.
Here is a list of some questions I have that technical documentation could address:
    •     Does your MDM solution have the capability to export the underlying Master Data structure (model)?
    •     What form is the data structure exported (db schema, data dictionary, etc)?
    •     What format would the exported information be in (XML, delimited text file, SQL DDL)?
    •     If the format is XML, is there an XML Schema that defines what it will look like?
    •     Do you have any sample export files that I can work with?
    •     Is there technical documentation that would help me make this possible?

If you want to integrate with DRM I would suggest using the API (check out the SDK). This is the preferred and supported way to inject or extract from DRM from an integration standpoint. You can also do imports/exports, for example exporting a hierarchy in XML, to a table, etc.
Directly modifying the tables is not supported or encouraged; the DRM engine enforces many rules like validations, keeps multiple versions, tracks changes in transaction logs, etc, besides the fact that the database structure can change during upgrades. Additionally, due to the dynamic configuration capabilities some things like property values are stored in a one-to-many table that may be pivoted from what you expect.

  • Some observations on my first use of Data Modeler Beta

First of all, I can see this tool has a lot of promise.
I hope Oracle keeps at it, it could turn into a real winner if all the features I see being worked on mature.
    Thanks!
Here are a few observations on things that I found non-obvious or tedious to do.
    1. When designing an entity, I want to give it a name, a definition, attributes and keys. I want that process to be quick and require the minimum amount of mouse-clicking/navigation fiddling as possible. The current way of defining the attribute's datatype and size is painfully slow. I have to click to get a pop-up. Then I have to click to choose from a set of categories. Then I have to click on a dropdown list. If I try to use the down-arrow on the dropdown list, it works, but not if I go past the one I want. The up-arrow won't take me backwards in the list, so more clicking. It's just a nasty, slow interface to do a simple task that I have to do a thousand times in a data model. If I need to change the size of something, back I go thru the entire process all over again.
That makes it doubly slow to work in the most natural way, which is to list the attributes and the datatypes, then come back and refine the sizes once the model is maturing and relatively stable.
    2. Adding an additional attribute requires a mouse click instead of a down-arrow. That means I have to take my hands off the keyboard to add a new attribute. Maybe there is some short-cut key that does that, but I have better things to do than memorize non-standard keyboard mappings. Make the down/up arrows works as they should.
    3. Adding the comment that describes the attributes is not quite as slow, but still requires more keystrokes/mouse movements than it should. It's hard enough to get developers to document their attributes, don't discourage them.
    4. I can't see the list of attributes, data types, sizes, key/mandatory settings, and the comment at one time while editing the entity. Makes it harder to grasp what all the attributes mean at a glance, which slows down the modeling and the comprehension of an existing model.
    5. All the entities I created had primary keys with columns in them. But when I tried to have it build a physical model, it complained that some relationships had no columns in them. For the life of me, I couldn't figure out how to fix that. Never had that problem in any other case tool.
    6. Getting it to generate DDL was awkward to find. Make it something obvious, like a button on the toolbar that says "Generate DDL".
    7. Apostrophes in the Comments in RDBMS are not escaped, so the generated DDL won't run.
    8. For the ease of use/speed of use testing on high-volume key tasks, make the developers do the task 1000 times in a row. Make them use long names that require typing, not table A with columns c1, c2 and c3. Long before they get to iteration 1000 they will have many ideas on how to make that task easier and faster to do.
    9. Make developers use names of things that are the maximum length allowed. For example, for a table name in oracle, the max length of the name is 30 characters. The name of one testing table should be AMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMZ. That's a capital A followed by 28 capital M's and a capital Z. For numbers, use the pattern 1555559. If the developers can't see the A and Z or 1 and 9 in the display area for the name in the default layout for the window, they did the display layout wrong. For places where the text can be really long, choose a "supported visible length" for that field and enter data in the pattern AMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMQMMMMMMMMZ, where Q is placed at the supported visible length. if the A and Q don't show, the layout is wrong.
    10. SQL Developer has quite a few truly gooberish UI interaction designs and I can see some of that carrying over to the Data Modeler tool. I really recommend getting a windows UI expert to design the ui interface, not a java expert. I've seen a lot of very productive windows user interfaces and extremely few java interfaces suitable for high-speed data entry. Give the UI expert the authority to tell the java programmers "I don't want to hear about java coding internals - make the user interface perform this way." I think the technical limitations in java UIs are much less than the mindset limitations I've seen in all to many programmers. That, and making the developers use their code 1000 times in a row to perform key tasks will cause the UI to get streamlined considerably.
Thanks, and keep up the good work!

    Dear David,
Again thank you for your valuable and highly appreciated feedback. Find included a more elaborated answer to your observations:
*1. When designing an entity, I want to give it a name, a definition, attributes and keys.*
In the new Early Adopter Release, a "SQL developer like" property window has been added for Entities and Tables. For each attribute/column you will have the ability to add name, datatype, Primary Key, Mandatory and comment from one and the same screen
*2. Adding an additional attribute requires a mouse click instead of a down-arrow.*
An enhancement request has been created
*3. Adding the comment that describes the attributes is not quite as slow, but still requires more keystrokes/mouse movements than it should.*
In the new Early Adopter Release, a "SQL developer like" property window has been added for Entities and Tables. For each attribute/column you will have the ability to add name, datatype, PK, M and comment from one and the same screen
*4. I can't see the list of attributes, data types, sizes, key/mandatory settings, and the comment at one time while editing the entity. Makes it harder to grasp what all the attributes mean at a glance, which slows down the modeling and the comprehension of an existing model.*
See former answers. For meaning of attributes you can also use the Glossary and Naming Standardization facilities: see Tools Option menu, Glossary and General Options for naming standards
*5. All the entities I created had primary keys with columns in them. But when I tried to have it build a physical model, it complained that some relationships had no columns in them. For the life of me, I couldn't figure out how to fix that. Never had that problem in any other case tool.*
A Bug report has been created. Issue will most probably be solved in the nexr Early Adopter release
*6. Getting it to generate DDL was awkward to find. Make it something obvious, like a button on the toolbar that says "Generate DDL".*
An enhancement request has been created.
*7. Apostrophes in the Comments in RDBMS are not escaped, so the generated DDL won't run.*
A bug report has been created

Make them use long names that require typing, not table A with columns c1, c2 and c3. Long before they get to iteration 1000 they will have many ideas on how to make that task easier and faster to do.*
I aplogize, but I don't understand clearly what you want to say with the use/speed of use here.
*9. Make developers use names of things that are the maximum length allowed.*
Our relational model is for use for not just Oracle, but also DB2, SQL Server and in the future maybe other database systems. Whicjh means that we can't taylor it to just one of these database systems. However you can set maxinum name lenghts by clicking right on the diagram and select Model Properties and here you can set naming Options. Here you can also use the Glossary and Naming Standardization facilities: see Tools Option menu, Glossary and General Options for naming standards
*10. SQL Developer has quite a few truly gooberish UI interaction designs and I can see some of that carrying over to the Data Modeler tool.*
Fully agree. As you will see in our next Early Adopter release we have started to use SQL Developer like UI objects.

  • Report locale, subtemplates and Data Model

    Hi,
    I have the following situation:
We have 4 templates according to language, with french the default language:
    - FR: template.rtf
    - NL: template_nl.rtf
    - DE: template_de.rtf
    - EN: template_en.rtf
The report locale is enough for BI Publisher to select the correct template, so that's OK.
Some data from our database is also based on locale (eg street names and cities).
Question 1: is it possible to use the current locale as parameter for the (sql) data model in some way (eg by using a specific parameter name)? For now we set the report locale to the correct language AND we send that same value through as a parameter. It would be cleaner to just set the report locale and be able to use that value in some way.
Question 2: all of the above templates have a footer that's being reused, each also share the same data model, but the data is again based on the current locale.
so: footer.rtf, footer_nl.rtf, footer_de.rtf and footer_en.rtf. Do I need to import all of these in their respective files or will localisation work (I doubt it)?
Question 3: Is there a way to implicitly pass all parameters that were passed to the main template, also pass to the subtemplates? (eg LANG parameter is passed to template_nl.rtf, who can use it in his data model, is there a way to automatically make LANG available for footer_nl.rtf's data model or do I need to explicitly pass it as a parameter in the <?call-template: footer?>) - again if the report locale is available in some way to the data model, it would be easy.
    Thanks in advance

    Hello,
Probably the easiest would be to use an OnDemand Process and some AJAX to pull your data into the extjs object.
Here's an example of an OnDemand Process.
    http://apex.oracle.com/pls/otn/f?p=11933:11
For data the easiest at the moment would be probably to use the Oracle XML functions to generate your data in XML and use that as your data feed.
You might want to take a look the new Interactive Reports included in APEX 3.1, while extjs has alot of functions there is a bit of setup involved , while the Interactive Reports all you need is a SQL query http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/application_express/html/irrs.html
You should search the forum for extjs as there has been quite a few successful integrations of APEX and extjs / YUI / jQuery etc.
