RAC for 11gR2 Database

Hi Friends,
11gR2 Db
OEL 5.4
We are planning to install RAC for 11gR2 database, for a 2-Node configuration.
Is 11gR2 certified for RAC? Can you give me links on how to install it?
Another question is....Is it possible to install two(2) database RAC instance sharing on the 2-node configuration?
I want to install DEV and PROD RAC instance on the target 2-node config.
Thanks a lot,
Ms K

Hi Ms K,
RTFM: The installation section is really good:
Grid Infrastructure (Clusterware): http://www.oracle.com/pls/db112/to_pdf?pathname=install.112/e10812.pdf
RAC Installation: http://www.oracle.com/pls/db112/to_pdf?pathname=install.112/e10813.pdf
Also the installer checks a lot of things, so a lot easier than 10g.
If that is not enough, have a search in support.oracle.com for RAC Starter Kits.
Even if you do not have access to ULN (Unbreakable Linux network) you can install the oracle-validated package (this is referred to in the installation section).
As a update server use public-yum.oracle.com and the oracle-validated can be found under oss.oracle.com
To your second question: Yes it is possible to have 2 RAC database instances on the same cluster (sharing the 2-node configuration).

  • Advice on whether to use ASM for 11gR2 databases

    Hi all,
Hope I can get some advice here for ASM.
I'm going to upgrade all my 10.2 EE databases to 11gR2, and I will not be running RAC, only single instances and Data Guard. My storage is HP SAN. I wonder if it is worth the trouble (in our small shop) to run ASM.
Currently, my backups are done from a SAN perspective only, meaning that whatever is in the SAN storage is backed up.
How do I back up the files in ASM? Do I have to copy the backupsets to file system first ?
    Thanks!

    fjfranken wrote:
For small databases performance gain is zero, you only add complexity where a normal file system would be sufficient.Disagree.
Also, the reasoning is not valid. ASM works at device level. Not at cooked file system level.
This means that ASM directly uses the LUN (seen as a local scsi device) of the SAN. See LUN. Use LUN. That simple.
Not using ASM means that the o/s needs to be updated and configured. That LUN needs to be mounted. It needs to be formatted. The mount needs to be made permanent (via fstab or whatever).
This makes ASM less complex and cooked file system more complex.
Also consider that the mount and its contents are exposed to other s/w and processes and users. This raises issue such as access control and security - and the possibility of errant s/w trashing a database file because it happens to be running on the wrong mount or wrong directory.
This is not the case with an ASM diskgroup as it is not mounted and not visible as a normal cooked file system.
And if a cooked file system feature needed for a non-database files, an ACFS volume can be created in the diskgroup and mounted as a clustered file system. So it is not as if you loose the option of having a cooked file system on a LUN, when using ASM.
Database size has nothing to do with the decision between cooked file system or ASM when using SAN LUNs. Ease of use, manageability, and feature set, have. From this perspective a cooked file system for database storage is old and clunky and insecure, and ASM is flexible, performant, scalable and secure.

  • 11gR1 backup for 11gR2 database clone.

    Hi all,
Our OS is 64 bit RHEL 5.7. On this we have EBS R12.1.3. with db version 11.1. Recently I installed EBS 12.1.3 (actually installed 12.1.1 and upgraded to 12.1.3) on a VM and upgraded its 11.1.0.7 db to 11.2.0.3. Now as I want to test the CPU patches on this instance I decided to clone the production instance here. Since this is a higher version oracle home (11.2.0), I will have to do some new steps here but am not sure what they are. I have restored the controlfile, restored and recovered the database and opened the database with STARTUP UPGRADE command. What steps should I perform next?
    Regards,
    Vinod

I believe this is what you need to do:
    - Clone your application tier node only
Cloning Oracle Applications Release 12 with Rapid Clone [ID 406982.1]
Rapid Clone Documentation Resources For Release 11i and 12 [ID 799735.1]
    - Re-apply the application patches you applied for 11.2.0.3 upgrade using "nodatabaseportion"

  • Configuration of Oracle RAC for windows

    Hi all
We are planning to test a RAC solution for our NW04S solution.
We want to install RAC for oracle database and use the RAC HA solution to implement enqueue service replication.
I ve found a document for installation on Unix which make a reference to a windows document guide.
i wasnt able to find it.
Any clues about this installation ?
    thanks a lot

    Yes, I do
Here is an exceprt of the SAP note 971289 (Protection of Enqueue Replication through Oracle Clusterware) :
"Use of Oracle 10.2 with the Real Application Clusters (RAC) option and Oracle 10.2 clusterware on a clustered Linux or AIX platform."
P.S. You can anyway use MSCS for replicated enqueue

It would highly depend on the distro that you are using. You would get the packages either from the media of the software or from the online repository provided by the vendor. For example, for Red Hat, it's Red Hat Network(RHN) which is a paid site. You didn't tell us the distro that you are using but if you are using Oracle's Enterprise Linux , you can get the packages using their Public YUM .

  • How to configure different listener for each database in 11gR2 RAC

    Hi Friends,
    Current Prod Setup :
11gR2 (11.2..0.2) RAC on RHEL 5.5 with 3 SCAN Listeners on default 1521 port.
Having 4 databases which are using SCAN-IP and listening on default port only.

  • Can SCAN be used for non 11gR2 databases ?

I am in the processes of database consolidation phase, where in I am consolidating 15 server to a 6 node single Grid for RAC , non -RAC & RAC one node.
I have non -RAC standalone database on NFS mount , visible on all the 6 nodes , idea is to be able to start the db from any node I like for maintenance which I can do with RAC & RAC ONE NODE.
I am planning to run SCAN on 3 node , but the question is, can I use SCAN listener for all the databases ?.
Currently started with a 2 node cluster where I have 11gR2 and couple of RAC one nodes and a 10g rac .
I am able to point to scan LISTENER and able to connect to 10g db , to me SCAN looks very pomissing for our kind of environment where db's can run on any node with out impacting client changes.
Before I present this to the management which I am planning to do This Thursday ( big day for me as I am projecting to save quite a bit of money ).
I don't want to push some thing that's not going to work , even thoug I can prove it now that it works.
And more importantly I have not see a document in google or ORACLE support that says I can nor a sign that any one using for non 11gR2.
How is this SCAN compared to OID or SUN OPEN DS ?

    Hi,
generally, SCAN can be used for 10g databases and you discovered the first half: for 10g databases you will have to modify the REMOTE_LISTENER entry for each 10g database instance to point to the SCAN listeners (as opposed to pointing to the remote local listeners, which is the default in 10g). You could even have the databases registers themselves with SCAN and the remote listeners, if you wanted to... It's more or less a matter of configuration. But for simplification reasons, I will stick to the case where you have your 10g databases register with the SCAN listeners only.
Now the other half is the client and the client configuration. An 11g Rel. 2 client configured for RAC would have a TNSNAMES entry that has only one address line for the RAC databases. The host entry in this one address line should point to the SCAN (the SCAN name is ideally resolved in DNS). A 10g client configured for RAC would have as many address lines in the TNSNAMES as you have nodes in the cluster.
The 10g client SCAN configuration would then be in the middle so to speak: You would have 3 address lines in your TNSNAMES, in which each host entry would resolve to one SCAN address (I assume you will use the recommended default of 3 SCAN IPs). If you choose, you can have a name resolution for each of your SCAN IPs, but this would not be required. Now, why would you do it this way? Because this configuration will always work and does not make you dependent on certain functionality that your DNS server may or may not offer.
For the remaining questions: SCAN is a DNS entry resolving one name to more than one (typically 3) IP addresses. OID is short for Oracle Internet Directory, which is a complete LDAP server. And you are right that there is no document how to configure 10g clients for SCAN from Oracle yet. However, there is a quite good document on SCAN on otn.oracle.com/rac, but I am sure you are aware of it already.
    Hope that helps. Thanks,
    Markus

  • ASM vs RAID for 11gR2 RAC Environment

    Hi There!
We are planning to install 11GR2 RAC with two nodes Cluster on LINUX in Our Environment.
    Operating System: OEL 5.4
In our hardware we got two dell Servers with 16GB RAM on each plus On SAN side we have only 8 disk (173GB) left for RAC Cluster Setup. I am going to create to database (LIVE/UAT) on This Cluster Setup. Currently Our Production DB size is 6GB and I assume for coming 5 year it will not go beyond 100GB And I keep UAT size 15GB fix with No changes. So how you get the best ASM performance by using my all Resources.
    My question:
    1)     Which is best solution for ASM and RAID in our storage Environment?
    2)     How many Disk group I Create for Both Databases (UAT/LIVE)?
    3)     How many disks should I allocate in Each Disk Group with which RAID Option or if any suggesting for LUN, How do I create LUNS across the Disk which I got?
    4)     I know oracle recommended Two DISK Group DATA&FRA is there any other suggestion for CRS, REDO, and TEMP FILE?
    Thanks for your Assintance.
    Hemesh.

My first question was : Which RAID Option(0,1,5,0+1) I choose with ASM ?Well, it doesnt matter for ASM. At least in your configuration with 8 disks.
RAID0is not an option - forget about it. RAID1 (or combined with more than two disks and an overlayed RAID0 which makes an RAID 1+0) might be an option for write-intensive databases. RAID5 is more for read-intensive due to the RAID5-write-hole but offers "more" capacity at the cost of slower write speed.
I recommended to stick with RAID1 (thus mirroring two disks) and exporting them to ASM rather than creating one big RAID1+0 over all of your disks and exporting the storage as one big chuck to ASM for manageability. If you want to add storage lateron your perfect in line with Oracles recommendations to have equal size LUNs in ASM with two mirrored disks. If you create on big RAID 1+0 and lateron add two disks you have a LUN of 600 GB size and one of 170 GB size...thats a big mismatch.
But If i create TWO disk group then, is there good practice to offer them to both (UAT/LIVE) databases.?Normally there is a separation between UAT and P on storage and on server level. In your case it might be "ok" to place everything in the same disk group. This mainly depends on which database puts the most load on the disk subsystem.

  • Can any one say that list of hardware for 11gr2 2node rac installation?  thank in advance

can any one say that list of hardware for 11gr2 2node rac installation?  thank in advance

    Hi ,
    Hardware Requirements
Physical memory (at least 1.5 gigabyte (GB) of RAM)
An amount of swap space equal to the amount of RAM
Temporary space (at least 1 GB) available in /tmp
A processor type (CPU) that is certified with the release of the Oracle software being installed
A minimum of 1024 x 786 display resolution, so that Oracle Universal Installer (OUI) displays correctly
All servers that are used in the cluster must have the same chip architecture, for example, all 32-bit processors or all 64-bit processors
Adequate disk space in the software installation locations to store the Oracle software
You need at least 5.5 GB of available disk space for the Grid home directory, which includes both the binary files for Oracle Clusterware and Oracle Automatic Storage Management (Oracle ASM) and their associated log files, and at least 4 GB of available disk space for the Oracle Database home directory, or Oracle home directory.
    About Shared Storage
These Oracle Clusterware components require the following disk space on a shared file system:
Three Oracle Clusterware Registry (OCR) files, 300 MB each, or 900 MB total disk space
Three voting disk files, 300 MB each, or 900 MB total disk space
If you are not using Oracle ASM for storing Oracle Clusterware files, then for best performance and protection, you should use multiple disks, each using a different disk controller for voting disk file placement. Ensure that each voting disk is configured so that it does not have share any hardware device or have a single point of failure.
    Network Hardware Requirements
When you configure the network for Oracle RAC and Oracle Clusterware, each node in the cluster must meet the following requirements:
Each node must have at least two network interface cards (NIC), or network adapters. One adapter is for the public network interface and the other adapter is for the private network interface (the interconnect). Install additional network adapters on a node if that node meets either of the following conditions:
Does not have at least two network adapters
Has two network interface cards but is using network attached storage (NAS). You should have a separate network adapter for NAS.
Has two network cards, but you want to use redundant interconnectsIn previous releases, to make use of redundant networks for the interconnect, bonding, trunking, teaming, or similar technology was required. Oracle Grid Infrastructure for a cluster and Oracle RAC can now make use of redundant network interconnects, without the use of other network technology, to enhance optimal communication in the cluster. This functionality is available starting with Oracle Database 11g Release 2 (11.2.0.2).Redundant Interconnect Usage enables load-balancing and high availability across multiple (up to 4) private networks (also known as interconnects).
However, When you install Oracle software, Oracle Universal Installer (OUI) automatically performs hardware prerequisite checks and notifies you if they are not met.

  • Solaris 10 patches for Oracle Database 11gR2

    Hi,
I downloaded Oracle Solaris 10 s/w from e-Delivery and got it installed. For Oracle Database 11gR2 I also need the followging patches:
    120754-06: SunOS 5.10_x86 libmtsk
    119961-05: SunOS 5.10_x86: Assembler
119964-14: SunOS 5.10_x86 Shared library patch for C++_x86
Though we have access to MyOracleSupport we can only download s/w patches using our support contract with Oracle and not OS patches.
Is there any other way I can get these patches.
    Rgds,
    Thiru.

    Thiru,
You won't find the patches in the patches/ directory on the DVD or the ISO image. Oracle integrates the patches directly into the packages, so there is no need to provide or install them separately.
All patches have a patch number (e.g. 120754) and a revision (e.g. 06). A newer revision of a patch always contains all fixes of the previous revisions. So try to run "showrev -p | grep 120754" instead, and you'll see that patch 120754-08 is pre-installed. As revision 08 is newer/higher than 06, the patch requirement is satisfied.
    Hope that helps,
    mp.

If you read the comments on that blog you will see that the results are highly dependent on the type of CPU.
The effects can also be dependent on the nature of the workload: you may have CPUs that are fine with an OLTP workload, but don't scale as you might hope with a DW workload.
