Advice on whether to use ASM for 11gR2 databases

Hi all,
Hope I can get some advice here for ASM.
I'm going to upgrade all my 10.2 EE databases to 11gR2, and I will not be running RAC, only single instances and Data Guard. My storage is HP SAN. I wonder if it is worth the trouble (in our small shop) to run ASM.
Currently, my backups are done from a SAN perspective only, meaning that whatever is in the SAN storage is backed up.
How do I back up the files in ASM? Do I have to copy the backupsets to file system first ?
Thanks!
June

For small databases performance gain is zero, you only add complexity where a normal file system would be sufficient.Disagree.
Also, the reasoning is not valid. ASM works at device level. Not at cooked file system level.
This means that ASM directly uses the LUN (seen as a local scsi device) of the SAN. See LUN. Use LUN. That simple.
Not using ASM means that the o/s needs to be updated and configured. That LUN needs to be mounted. It needs to be formatted. The mount needs to be made permanent (via fstab or whatever).
This makes ASM less complex and cooked file system more complex.
Also consider that the mount and its contents are exposed to other s/w and processes and users. This raises issue such as access control and security - and the possibility of errant s/w trashing a database file because it happens to be running on the wrong mount or wrong directory.
This is not the case with an ASM diskgroup as it is not mounted and not visible as a normal cooked file system.
And if a cooked file system feature needed for a non-database files, an ACFS volume can be created in the diskgroup and mounted as a clustered file system. So it is not as if you loose the option of having a cooked file system on a LUN, when using ASM.
Database size has nothing to do with the decision between cooked file system or ASM when using SAN LUNs. Ease of use, manageability, and feature set, have. From this perspective a cooked file system for database storage is old and clunky and insecure, and ASM is flexible, performant, scalable and secure.

  • RAC for 11gR2 Database

    Hi Friends,
    11gR2 Db
    OEL 5.4
We are planning to install RAC for 11gR2 database, for a 2-Node configuration.
Is 11gR2 certified for RAC? Can you give me links on how to install it?
Another question is....Is it possible to install two(2) database RAC instance sharing on the 2-node configuration?
I want to install DEV and PROD RAC instance on the target 2-node config.
    Thanks a lot,
    Ms K

    Hi Ms K,
RTFM: The installation section is really good:
    Grid Infrastructure (Clusterware): http://www.oracle.com/pls/db112/to_pdf?pathname=install.112/e10812.pdf
    RAC Installation: http://www.oracle.com/pls/db112/to_pdf?pathname=install.112/e10813.pdf
Also the installer checks a lot of things, so a lot easier than 10g.
If that is not enough, have a search in support.oracle.com for RAC Starter Kits.
Even if you do not have access to ULN (Unbreakable Linux network) you can install the oracle-validated package (this is referred to in the installation section).
As a update server use public-yum.oracle.com and the oracle-validated can be found under oss.oracle.com
To your second question: Yes it is possible to have 2 RAC database instances on the same cluster (sharing the 2-node configuration).

I think it should be fine.
    Please let me know.
    thanks

    Hello,
the amount of convertible has no relation to if you can use dmu or not.
of course, the less convertible, the less time the conversion process itself will take, but that's about it

  • How to check my Oracle dbms is using ASM for storage?

    Thanks.

On unix first check whether you have any ASM instance or not by:
    ps -ef | grep pmon
It will show you an entry similar to:
    oracle 6953 1 0 Jun24 ? 00:00:07 asm_pmon_+ASM
which means you are having ASM instance on the box, next to find out whether a DB is using it or not login to that DB and issue (from sqlplus):
    SQL>select name from v$datafile;
If any of the datafile path is starting from a "+" sign it means you are using ASM diskgroup for that file.
    You can also issue:
    show parameter db_recovery_file_dest
to check if the flashback area of your database is sitting on ASM or not.

  • RAC 10gr2 using ASM for RMAN a cluster file system or a Local directory

The environment is composed of a RAC with 2 nodes using ASM. I have to determine what design is better for Backup and Recovery with RMAN. The backups are going to be saved to disk only. The database is only transactional and small in size
I am not sure how to create a cluster file system or if it is better to use a local directory. What's the benefit of having a recovery catalog that is optional to the database?
I very much appreciate your advice and recommendation, Terry

    Arf,
I am new to RAC. I analyzed Alejandro's script. He is main connection is to the first instance; then through sql*plus, he gets connected to the second instance. he exits the second instance and starts with RMAN backup to the database . Therefore the backup to the database is done from the first instance.
I do not see where he setenv again to change to the second instance to run RMAN to backup the second instance. It looks to me that the backup is only done to the first instance, but not to the second instance. I may be wrong, but I do not see the second instance backup.
Kindly, I request your assistance on the steps/connection to backup the second instance. Thank you so much!! Terry

  • Using QuB for this database problem

Hi, I have a problem of trying to list links on a website I am creating and if I am correct, I need to link 2 tables on the database. I was trying to use QuB for this but am tearing my hair out.
    Here is my problem:
I have a list of links on a website and each one belongs to a category for eg:
    Category: Biomass
    Comapny Name: AN Other
    WebLink: http:abc.com
Now how can I show all the Biomass links together under the one heading and all the others under their own heading eg, Windpower, Boilers etc.
Can I use QuB for this?
    The tables I have are:
    Table 1:
    id
    Category
    Table 2:
    id
    Category
    Client
    Weblink
That's it, hope I haven;t confused everyone, because I'm confused enough!
    Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, this is a common problem with serialization : If an obj which does not implement Serializable is a non-transient member of an object that is Serialized, Java throws a NotSerializableException.
Therefore, you have to walk through the chain of objs to make each one of them serializable, which is not always practical.
Below is a link that presents a solution to this problem, by using a SerializableAdapter (using the Adapter design pattern) :

  • 11gR1 backup for 11gR2 database clone.

    Hi all,
Our OS is 64 bit RHEL 5.7. On this we have EBS R12.1.3. with db version 11.1. Recently I installed EBS 12.1.3 (actually installed 12.1.1 and upgraded to 12.1.3) on a VM and upgraded its 11.1.0.7 db to 11.2.0.3. • Advice me regarding the certification path for 10g database certification.

    Hello friends,
I am planning to take the certification for Oracle 10g database Associate, and am confused about the codes of the tests I need to take.
    I have following queries:-
    1) Is it enough to take 1Z0-042, to take Oracle Certified Associate, certification?
    2) Is it necessary to take 1Z0-047 as a support for this certification?
    3) Would I be considered for job openings if I get certified? (I mean the frequency of jobs). I know it is hard to answer this question, however I want an idea of applying for certified related jobs that accept OCA.
Please advice me in this regard.
    Thanks in advance
    Murli

Please post any other certification-related questions in the forum: Oracle Certification Program
To become OCA you need to do the 1z0-042 exam and one of the following exams: 1z0-007, 1z0-051, 1z0-047.
Becoming certified will put you in front of many people, but what employers are mostly looking for is experience. Many companies require a certification for the person to be even eligible for the interview, others use it as a differential.

  • Problem when using template for new database (ora10g)

    Hi all,
I've done this a few times now, on different servers weeks apart.
I have an Oracle 10g install on a Windows Server 2003 box, and I have run the database configuration assistant to create a database. We will have several databases with the exact same setup when I move Oracle 10g to a production environment. I created the database exactly as I need it the first time round, then I save it as a template to use for the next ones. However, when I run the template I get the following error:
    ORA-01501: CREATE DATABASE failed
ORA-09314: sltln: error translating logical name
Whats driving me nuts is, if I just go ahead and retype everything back in the same as the last database it works fine, just seems to be the template which is messing me up.
Heres the template I'm trying to use (hope just pasting it like this is ok.. if not, please some mod remove it and I'll attach it)
