Random system and app crashes.

A few days go I started having some problems with my system.
I'm running OS X 10.5.4 on a 2GHz Intel C2D MacBook (mid 2007).
The problem appears to be random, and so far I haven't been able to identify it. Every once in a while, applications will cease to start up. They simply stop working, there's no way to open them. At first, Firefox started crashing repeatedly, so I re-installed it and everything went normal for a while.
Yesterday the problem became more serious. After several hours of use, several applications stop responding. Lets say I want to use Transmit, or Coda, or Remote Desktop, whatever. I try to launch them and they just freeze. I have to Force Quit them they and won't start up until I restart the system.
Even worse; in some occasions Force Quit doesn't even do anything. The dock freezes, Finder freezes, the Menu Bar crashes. I have to do a force shutdown of the system to get everything back to normal again.
I used to have my system up for days between restarts. In two days I had to restart OS X almost 5 times.
I used Onyx (latest version) and performed every single maintenance task: repaired permission, cleared system, users, apps and font caches, rebuilt the Spotloght index, run maintenance scripts, rebuilt Launch Services. I also removed unused apps, system preferences, helper apps and stuff I don't need.
Apparently it did fixed something, as I notice that everyhintg works a bit faster and snappier. Every apps launched just fine. I left my mac all night doing some SuperDuper! backups and went to bed.
This morning everything was ok, until I few hours ago when I tried to use Software Update. The app failed the start up. Suddenly, not a single app would. I had to restart to get everything back to normal.
It appear to be working for the moment, but I fear that in a few hours it'll become unstable again. Has anyone had this kind of problem before?

Could be. I don't do wireless, so I haven't a clue. You might check the Getting Online and Networking forum: http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1222

  • XP SP2 system random reboots and app crashes

I got this new setup in signature about a month ago... Installed XP SP1 and right away put SP2 on it. At times it can run nice for a number of days, other times it acts weird applications crash and without any warning system reboots - looking in system log there's an error with "Error code 00000019" that I can't make anything out of.
Got latest BIOS and drivers from Live Update.
CPU TEMP 46 C and SYS TEMP 40 C CoreCenter shows when idle. Heavy use CPU goes up to 63 C, SYS only rises a couple of degrees.
Windows Memory Diagnostic reports no errors.
Any ideas and suggestions? What else can I try? Is it a OS or hardware prob most likely?
    Thanks in advance
I read the thread about SP2 not booting but I've never had any problems booting my Windows...
I got "DEP for essential windows programs and services only" set, I've tested the other one too for a while but that failed curing my illness.

  • New E65 randomly rebooting and apps crashing

    Dear Nokia,
Pleas etake the time and effort to supply a working E65 firmware for downloading since the one that my E65 was shipped with (1.0633.18.01) works rather poorly:
    - The webbrowser will crash randomly
    - The network connection will quit randomly
    - The phone will reboot randomly
And this while I only have used about 0.1% of all available features on said phone. One could say the failure rate is rather high.
I upgraded from a Nokia 6310i that actually still worked quite well but was not Bluetooth compatible with my new car-kit so I made the dubious decision to upgrade (downgrade?) to the E65, since the N95 was just a little too much of a good thing for me.
As it turns out the N95 already has firmware upgrades while the older E65 that would benefit from less bugs too apparently was forgotten.
Please oh please fix your product.
    Sincerely,
    sprins

  • System Information App crashes

I have been having my System Information App crash everytime that I click the "More Info". I don't really know what to do to solve this error. Here is the crash report. I have run a hardware test and found that my RAM appeared to be bad yesterday and switched back to my stock 4GB of RAM. This problem was happening before I switched the RAM and I thought that they were related, it seems I was mistaken.

  • HT204406 System and iTunes crash everytime since trying to link iTunes  Match - purchased a new computer and still then same issue.  Need support to fix, or cancel the iTunes match - have not been able to use it yet.

System and iTunes crash everytime I try to enable iTunes Match
Libary has 20,000 music files and about 50 movies, of which 2/3 are digital copies
Any ideas, as I would like to use iTunes Match
    Thanks

In iTunes, do Store->View my AppleID
    Click "Deuthorize ALL"
Then, on any computers you still have, do Store->Authorize this computer.  If there are less than 5, you will have no problem.
You can only do "deauthorize all" once a year, so in the future, if you ever throw a computer away, remember do to "Store->Deauthorize this computer" first.

  • Best way to put system and apps (home directory?) on new SSD?

I just installed a new 115 GB SSD in slot 2 of my MacPro (early 2008). I have not initialized yet.  I want to make that my Boot Drive.  I have Carbon Cloner and have cloned my entire old HD onto an external so far.  What is the best way to get my system and apps onto the SSD. I'm guessing Carbon Cloner will let me clone parts of my HD and not make me clone all of it but I don't yet know how to do that.  Do I just clone my apps folder and then my system folder one at a time?   What do I do with the Library? I cannot clone my entire HD onto the SSD first because it will not fit and I do not want my data on there anyway.  I have read that I should also put my home directory on the boot but this is now confusing me.  I plan on partioning the erased HD into fast and slow, then putting my User folder from the external back on there.  I am the only one using the computer so I do not have issues with Users and all my apps are in the main hard drive app folder but I have noticed that I have things in both my Library folders (main HD and my home).  Should I put all items in one of them, main or home? before I do this?  I never understood why I have items in both folders since I am the only user and all the apps are on main. Thanks.

    Terrific job.
I would suggest changing the name to "System Restore from Configuration".
    Thank you.

  • IOS8 Slow Performance, Keyboard Bugs and App Crashes on iPhone 5

Since updating my iPhone 5 to iOS8, performance has slowed considerably: Apps take longer to launch and interface animation stutters.
When turning the phone on and off, the screen goes black - I have to keep pressing the on/off sleep/wake switch to get the screen to illuminate.
Typing this in landscape on my iPhone 5 (using the standard keyboard - I've not tried installing any third party keyboards yet) is taking ages: There are now only two lines of text visible due to the word-suggestion feature. I've just noticed as I type this that the text display isn't automatically scrolling, so unless I manually scroll down the window, I can't see what I'm typing!
Positioning the magnifying glass is challenging - its position is not following my finger! The behaviour of the backspace is also unpredictable . . . and I am now typing this on my Mac because Safari crashed mid-sentene ! (Thank goodness this site auto-saves - I didn't have to start again when I logged into my Mac!)
I like all the new iOS8 features (although the key feature for me - the health app - is not linking to any fitness apps yet due to an Apple-acknowledged bug). But the performance hit, bugs and app crashing created by the iOS8 upgrade means I now want to return to iOS7.
I'm surprised at these issues because, unlike previous iOS releases, IOS 8 was in public beta for a few months, as well as being with developers since WWDC.
If Apple are going to move iOS deeper into the enterprise (with IBM for example) its needs to prioritise stability - even if it means moving from an annual upgrade cycle. Apple hasn't managed this with Mac OS - the last three Mac OS updates have not been usable in an enterprise/Pro App environment until around 9 months after their release.

ios8 for my iphone 5 = crashes, hot phone, restarts, dropped calls, funny looking fuzzy 'senior picture screen' with frost on the perimeter.....  Just opening 'message' for texts takes 3-4 seconds to load, where previously, it was milliseconds latency speeds.  I think they pressed this OS beyond the reasonable functional limit of the hardware (phones), especially with the older phones and/or phones with less memory.
It's like an athlete on steroids, the bones can't handle the force of the muscles and something is gonna BREAK!
When did we ever come to think that $400 phones would become 2-4 year disposable items and revere at the glory of it all!  And whether we realize it or not, it's being shoved down our throats.
Just fix the OS please so my phone can work for me as it has in the past.
For the $$ being paid out, we shouldn't have to reset, restart, restore......

  • Imac and Apps crashing

My I-mac just recently will suddenly reboot or Apps will suddenly crash and will not restart without rebooting.  I am at a loss on what to do.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
In the Console window, look under the heading DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION on the left for crash or panic reports. If you don't see that heading, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". It may be under either of the two subcategories, "System" and "User." A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic".
Select the most recent of each and post the entire contents — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post any other kind of diagnostic report, such as a hang log — they're very long and not helpful.

  • IOS8 Ford Sync Issues and Apps Crashing!

    Hi all,
I saw that there are others that are experiencing the same issues, but I can't reply for some reason, so in an effort to get Apple on board with fixing the issue. I am starting a new thread - Apologies for the length, but I am really annoyed...
My phone is syncing okay via bluetooth in my 2013 Ford Explorer, as far as actual calls go, but I typically have to plug it in to my system to have access to voice control for music, a consistent issue between the MS operating system in the car and Apple. Anyway, I have noticed several issues over the course of the last few updates. 1st, they (I am not sure if "they" means, Apple or Microsoft) finally corrected the read text feature, and then MS updated the car operating system and I can no longer use this feature. Super frustrating when we are trying to be safe... but a minimal issue. Then, the alerts won't come through if the phone is plugged in, only when unplugged via BT. Again, not a huge problem while driving, but annoying.
THEN the real music issues began. I started noticing that the music title was correct, but the album cover was  way off, some days it is all the way off, and other days it is less. After previous update, when I plug my phone in to the USB port, it will start at the beginning of my songs list. The most annoying part about this, is that when I close apps, I am very careful about keeping my playlist open, as the first song I have is kind of annoying. I know Tiff, DELETE the song, but there is a place for it depending on my mood. Anyway, I digress...  I assume this is another app crash issue. Now, with iOS8, when I plug it in, the car states it is on autoplay, but nothing happens, I have to hit play it on on my phone... which has crashed, AGAIN, so I can't use the fast play option from a locked screen due to the crash, so I have to search for my play list. Becuase of the MS/Apple issue, I can't use the hands free feature via BT, becuase of the apps crashing it has to "Download" my playlists... but ONLY if it is plugged in as previously noted. So, while I realize I sound spoiled, the point is, the reason I bought this particular model is to get the My Ford Touch. I want to be able to use the safety features... And the reason I stay with Apple is because I am loyal, and the thought of getting my music on another device stresses me out... I am already having issues transferring from a PC to my new iMac... PS I carry 2 phones for work purposes, with 2 different providers, and both are experiencing the issues, not to mention my husband's too.
Now, to face the app crashes... It is getting worse every day, most apps are constently crashing. The Weather app takes a really long time to load current weather and Facebook crashes so many times while it is loading it isn't even worth checking unless you have time to load it over and over. Beta needs to be really tested and tested by real hard core users to get this figured out PRIOR to launch. I would expect some small issues, but these seem like a lot. Fix the crashing, that will solve problem 1 of the music not starting where left off. and Fix the auto start when plugged into devices. I have checked all of the settings I can think of and nothing.
Finally, the entire phone freezes all the time. multiple times daily I have to do a hard start...

Try shutting your iPhone totally off. Then wait 60 seconds and turn back on.
    >>>  I want to be able to use the safety features.  <<<
Looks like mobile phones will soon be disabled, or partially disabled when they're in motion anyway.

  • Finder and apps crashing constantly.

This problem started when I downloaded an archive file. I downloaded The Unarchiver to try and open it, but there was a password on the archive which I didnt have, and I quit and deleted it. It was pretty inconsequential.
From that moment on, EVERY app crashed, most of the time when I went to save files. Some of them, like Spotify, would just not open. Most frustrating of all is that Finder just will not relaunch. Every time I went to shut down or restart, my mac would just hang on the grey shutdown screen and do absolutely nothing from that point on without holding the power down.
It seems like it's probably finder that is causing the other apps to malfunction, but I've tried a few different things to fix it. Obviously the first thing I did was get rid of the arhive and The Unarchiver, I tried to use TimeMachine but for some reason it was asking for a server password which I've never had. I found this command useful online:
    sudo update_dyld_shared_cache -force
This command allowed me to shut down, but I had to use it every time or else I'd end up with the grey screen hang again.
Since all of my files are on a wireless HDD, I decided to just do a clean reinstall. It was all fine, until I started updating the OS/Re-loading all my software. Never had a problem with any of the software previously, and I dont remember any updates being the cause of the issues...
    Please help? I'm lost.
    OS X version 10.8.4

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • My iPod 3g said it had no songs, the wifi was greyed out, my videos wouldnt work, bluetooth wouldnt work, and apps crashed

So i'm travelling in Vietnam. Staying at this hotel, my ipod suddenly stopped being able to search for wifi, and constantly had the 'circle' indicating loading.. however my music and apps were still intact. However, i restarted my ipod, and when i turned it back on it said  had no songs and no videos when i loaded Music, and when i tried using apps they showed the initial default screen of the app and then crashed. i tried connecting it to itunes, but itunes said it could not read the ipod, so it suggested i restore it. i googled solutions but none of them worked, and my music for itunes is scattered in my laptop and my computer back home. not being able to find solutions, i restored my ipod, and so now all my music is gone. i have to say im extremely disappointed with Apple for not giving solutions that work. im sure countless other people have this problem ( from what i read on forums, they do) . anyone had this problem and actually fixed it without restoring? i'd like to know for the future. thank you.

Here is Apples' troubleshooting for grayed out wifi. Frequently however, it does not solve the problem and an appointment at the Genus Bar of a an Apple store is in order.

  • Iphone 4 5.0.1 Music deleted and App crash

I was listening to music today and all of a sudden my phone shuts off and I turn it back on with all the music gone except one folder of a band I listen too but there is no music in it, and everytime I search for music in the music app it crashes and sends me back to the home screen, I'm jailbroken on 5.0.1 and I have never had this problem, its been jailbroken for 3 months now and everythings fine and I did not update or download anything in the past week that could have caused this... I've tried syncing music again but the music app is the same and still crashes with no musicc. Itunes says I have 8gb worth of music on my phone but I really don't have anything.. Everything else works perfectly fine, apps, videos, photos..etc..
What could be the problem? My only choice is to resort to restoring to factorie settings but I really don't want to lose all my apps and tweaks that I have costimized to my liking on my Iphone 4...

Nevermind. I figured it is because of the new 'push' service for the Sparrow mail client released today on Cydia, called Sparrow Push (OH yeah, my phone is jailbroken...:)). I did uninstall other relavant tweaks and utilities I recenty installed from Cydia but never though this Push service had any relavance.

  • Safari and Apps crashing

I know of the facebook app crashing all the time and it also crashing in safari. Now I am seeing safari crashes sometimes while viewing pages beside facebook and sometime my other apps with cause my iPad to crash back to the home screen Anyone else going through this?

The standard way to recover a crashing device is to restore it.  Plug it in to iTunes, let it sync, then choose "Restore" from the iPad's summary page in iTunes.

  • Beachball constantly comes up and apps crash

This has been a serious problem on my Power Mac G4 (Gigabit Ethernet) for some time now and it's really annoying. It's been happening with both Tiger and Leopard (yes, I now have Leopard installed). After some use (especially on pogo.com), Safari gets the beach ball icon for a few seconds and then crashes.

    I'd backup your data ASAP.
How did you install 10.5? If you did an upgrade, this will inherit troubles you had in the past very easily.
How old / big is the drive? you could be losing blocks on the drive, or getting hard to read.
Open Disk Utility & run a repair permissions. Then run the verify disk. if ANY errors come up, you will either have to boot from the install disk to repair or replace the drive if they are SMART failure errors.
