Raw file printing in C++
Hi Team,
I am planning create a print function in my VC++ application. I got sample program of GDI printing code from MSDN and followed the below steps (Working fine).
To begin a print job, call StartDocPrinter.
To begin each page, call StartPagePrinter.
To write data to a page, call WritePrinter.
To end each page, call EndPagePrinter.
Repeat 2, 3, and 4 for as many pages as necessary.
To end the print job, call EndDocPrinter.
But I read some where that XPS printing is better than GDI. I got a link from MSDN shown below
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/ff728890(v=vs.85).aspx
From this link I couldn't download the sample application which is placed bottom of the page.
Clarification :
1. Which printing technology is good ?(GDI or XPS)
2. If XPS is good, how can I get the sample code ?(As the download link not working :( )
Regards
Ramesh.
Back in 2005, when I was writing my distributed printing system, I was asking myself the same question. And my answer was, that I'm going to ignore XPS. It's way more complicated and it doensn't provide any benefits. Plus, GDI is such a small interface (it's
old, that's why it's efficient :-) ), that you could write some kind of "adapter" if it's becoming necessairy to change the technology. But I guess this would never happen... (10 years ago they said they will change, until now nothing changed).
... have you ever seen the XPS documentation? ... that's simply insane how large it is. But that's just my opinion...

Colours wrong when RAW file with Adobe RGB profile printed from iPhoto '08
I've taken some photos on my Nikon D300 with the colourspace set to Adobe RGB. These import and display fine in iPhoto '08 but when printed it looks like the printer (Epson R2400 with the Epson 6.12 driver) is using the sRGB colourspace. The only option I can find relating to colour, is the Color matching dialogue which gives the option of Colorsync or Epson Color Controls. I've tried both with the same results. Preview shows the profile of the .nef file to be Adobe RGB (1998).
Has anyone any ideas of what I need to change?AndyMn:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Most inkjet printers are geared for the sRGB profile. The Adobe profile is used by professional printers. Apple's services also recommend the sRGB profile. You need to reassign the sRGB or sRGBIEC1966-2.1 profile. I'm not sure about the raw file but you can use the ColorSync Utility to assign that profile to the file.
I have an Applescript that will apply the profile to files or folder of files dropped on it. I'm not sure if it will work on RAW files but it does on jpgs and tiffs. You can download it from Toad's Cellar. It takes about 6 seconds per file but does not apply any additional jpeg compression to jpg files.
Assigning the profile is considered better than the Applescript way but can only be done one at a time. You can test each method and see what gives you the best results.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard. -
Problems with prints from RAW files
I wonder if someone could shed some light on this problem. I uploaded some photos to Kodak through iPhoto, some were JPEG's from my old Canon Powershot and some were RAW files from my new Nikon D40. The images on my monitor from the RAW files from the D40 were great with very vivid colors and I was looking forward to my first prints from the D40. When I received the prints the photos from the old Power shot looked good but the D40 looked terrible. The prints were all washed out and very dull, the strange thing was that there was one photo that was taken with the D40 which was edited and that came out as a good print and seemed to be a JPEG. I guess its something to do with the upload of RAW files, should I be shooting in JPEG ?. I thought that iPhoto uploaded JPEG's
Thank you in advancePrinted RAW files will always look unsaturated or "dull" until processed and saved as a jpeg or tiff files. Think of RAW/NEF as a means of preserving ALL the available information to later "develop" a final image to be saved as tiff or jpeg for publication. Shooting in Large Fine JPEG mode will yield great results for print and web publishing, and also leave more room on your memory card and computer drive to make more great photos

Lines on image when printing Raw files
Dear All
I am trying to print Raw images.
After converting and making my adjustments, I click on File > print (in the PSE editor) and then use the cursor to drag out the image to the size I want (roughly a 10 inch by 8 inch image to be printed on A4 paper). I then print it and it comes out with loads of parallel lines on the image.
Any advice to correct this?
Regards
Jon CAmilleriHello All
I am managing to print out raw files fine after manipulating them in canons own software (Digital photo professional) but still getting bands when using PSE 7 raw converter? Any more advice?
When sending to print in PSE a box comes up saying 'Some post-script specific settings (interpolation, calibration, encoding) will be ignored as you are printing to a non-postscript printer' This box does not come up when printing from digital photo professional. Could this be the problem resulting in bands on the image and, if so, can it be corrected?
Someone mentioned about Gamut problems - how do I alter/correct these?
Also, with Raw files, after I have manipulated them (e.g to black and white) how can I perform other tasks (eg dodge and burn areas) as it seems that PSE wont let me do this on a RAW image.
Do I have to save it as a JPEG first ? If so, what is the point in taking a RAW image in the first place if I am going to lose detail by converting it to a JPEG?
Sorry for all the questions
Regards

Printing from Raw files?
I have been trying to print directly from Aperture to an Epson 4000 using the adjusted RAW files (Canon 1DMK2). I have the files looking great on the screen, I choose the printer and all of the correct printer settings but the prints are totally blue. If I export the RAW files to jpegs, then bring those jpegs into Aperture and print them using the same print settings they print just fine. Likewise if I use Adobe Bridge to adjust the raw files, then have them printed thru Photoshop using Contact Sheet, they print fine. It's only when trying to print from the RAW files within Aperture that I have problems.
Does anyone have success printing from RAW files to a printer? The most likely answer to this question lies in a bug
apparently introduced in Aperture 1.5.1. Supposedly
1.5.0 was OK in this respect.
Anyway, if you print RAW using a Contact sheet
profile, the colors are messed up. Any printer. Any
OS. Any camera.
Print that same picture in RAW using single photo on
a page and it will work fine.
Any other format besides RAW works fine in contact
sheets. Many of us are waiting for Apple to fix this
bug. In the meantime, you will indeed need to either
convert the picture to tiff or jpeg OR send it to
some other program to print (Photoshop, etc.)
Interestingly, if you hit print preview, a picture
will get created and loaded into Preview and it will
show you just how badly this is going to print.
Compare some RAWs in single and contact print
profiles to see how the same picture would be printed
very differently. (without wasting ink)
It looks like GeneTucc had it right. I got the latest update that was released today (December 11) and the contact sheets print much better. Still have a long ways to go, but that's just the normal color mgmt issues. -
If i try to open any File with Camera Raw exactly nothing happens.
What exact camera make and model?
What specific, exact version of Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) plug-in?
What specific, exact versions of Bridge and of Yosemite?

Note that this is boilerplate text.
If you give complete and detailed information about your setup and the issue at hand,
such as your platform (Mac or Win),
exact versions of your OS, of Photoshop (not just "CS6", but something like CS6v.13.0.6) and of Bridge,
your settings in Photoshop > Preference > Performance
the type of file you were working on,
machine specs, such as total installed RAM, scratch file HDs, total available HD space, video card specs, including total VRAM installed,
what troubleshooting steps you have taken so far,
what error message(s) you receive,
if having issues opening raw files also the exact camera make and model that generated them,
if you're having printing issues, indicate the exact make and model of your printer, paper size, image dimensions in pixels (so many pixels wide by so many pixels high). if going through a RIP, specify that too.
etc.,
someone may be able to help you (not necessarily this poster).
a screen shot of your settings or of the image could be very helpful too.

HI,
I have an IMac with 4 G of Ram and am using Apeture 3.51. When trying to edit CS2 raw files I experience frequent crashes and freez ups of the whole computer. Any suggestions? You didn't mention any color calibration being done on your monitor. This is an essential part of any color-correct workflow. What are you using to calibrate your monitor (and your printer)?
Print profiles (for soft-proofing as well as printing) are for specific combinations of paper & printer. The nine you have are each, most likely, for a common paper (perhaps mfr'd by Canon) to be used with your printer.
I don't know what you mean when you say "I choose a high standard print option".
Have you read the User Manual chapter on printing?

There is also a good appendix on calibration:

Photoshop crashes when trying to open any RAW files
Hi, I'm running PS 5.1 on a Mac Pro OS 10.7.5. Every time I try and open a RAW file (.DNG, .CR2 etc) Photoshop thinks about it then quits.
I have uninstalled then re-installed PS, cleared the caches, deleted the PS settings, downloade and installed Camera Raw 6.7.
Same files open OK on another Mac.
I had had problems with Bridge quitting a couple of weeks ago, which I resolved, don't know if that's related.
Crash report below, any suggestions welcome!

file>open has always been available, but when i select a file and open it is when it hangs. Hitting esc then has no effect.
Tried the reset preferences - still no change.
A friend suggested delete all network printers and voila - it worked! Still keeping fingers and toes crossed every time I use pshop, a little annoying that I have to send files to another machine to print (fortunately I rarely need to print files), and input devices hard to use with everything crossed.
Thanks for suggestions Dave. -
Can't open canon raw files in cs4
I recently had to rebuild my pc after a problem that stopped a few of my programs working (I'd installed xampp so I could use wordpress on the pc but it stopped cs4, firefox, video studio and a bunch of other stuff working - removal and reinstalling did no use, I had to build a new disc).
I reinstalled cs4 and got all the updates but now I find I can't open can raw files with cs4 or bridge. I tried replacing the Camera Raw.8bi file with the latest file from adobe as per their web instructions but it still doesn't work. So I tried the adobe dng convertor (version 8.3) and ran the files through that, still no luck, I can't open the files.
I could open them wwith canons own software and save as a tiff, but then I'm losing a lot of information.
I'm still running vista home premium - no I can't upgrade to windows 8.1 and use the latest photoshop and lightroom software because 8.1 doesn't work with my nikon scanner or my epson large format printer. It doesn't like a few other items I have either.
I remember I had to download a few files a couple of years ago when I first bought the pc (a whole 3 years ago) as I was having trouble with photoshop and raw files then but I can't remember the name of the file or where I got it from.
Anyone able to help? much appreciated if you can.Hi John,
Adobe told me to replace the relevant file, which I did. The trouble is that went I do this then 'camera raw' disappears from the 'help / plugins' list and there doesn't seem to be any way of getting back other than uninstalling and reinstalling cs4, and once I do this it overwrites the files again...
I can't remember having this trouble when I first installed it a couple of years ago but I do seem to remember having to replace a file somewhere but that may have been on an earlier version.
I have an old EOS 5d mk1 & a 7d mk1, so it's not as though the camera is unknown to cs4.

Is it possible to ignore JPG files on import? I shoot raw + JPG and see no reason to keep the JPGs; I shoot JPG primarily as a backup (I back all the JPGs up online to my smugmug account then delete them before importing the raw files), but they're also occasionally handy if one wants to get a quick print in the field. I know that one can set a preference to "Treat JPEG Files Next to Raw Files As Separate Photos", but even then they still are imported.
As an example, say I have this scenario (not on DSLRS, but on pNs cameras, sometimes a JPG but not raw is captured - I suspect this has to do with how the buffer is filling) with these files on a memory card:
IMG_0001.JPG
IMG_0001.CR2
IMG_0002.JPG
IMG_0003.JPG
IMG_0003.CR2
When I import pictures from this folder, I'd like 2 CR2 files and 1 JPG to be imported. I'm even willing to copy the relevant files and drag and drop them onto LR's Library module. But even if I do that, all five files get imported. Thanks!

For this typical example 98% of the image files are transferred while LR is building previews, which is exactly what I was suggesting be avoided.
No, I don't believe that's correct. As I said in my previous post, Lightroom's Import is a two-stage process.....first copy the files from the card, then when that is finished, render whatever previews have been requested.
AFAIK there is nothing unusual about my system, Lightroom has always imported in this two-stage way as far back as I can remember. Based on this I see no 'safety' benefit from copying files first outside Lightroom, then using an ADD import process. On the contrary, as this takes away the possibility of using the "Second Copy on Import" option, as well as having to manually setup import folders, I see nothing but downside from that approach.
Mea culpa, Jim is correct! I checked my Windows 7 system with LR4.2 and I monitored the 'Destination folder' during an import direct from memory card to hard drive. 'Copy and import' showed in the progress bar until all image files were visible using Windows Explorer in the 'Destination folder.' Only after all files had transferred did the progress bar change to ‘Render 1:1 Previews.’ I started using LR1.0 on a Pentium 3 single-core system with Windows XP 32 bit, which I think is when I made this observation. Regardless, it is clear that LR4.2 is using a two-step import process. Thanks Jim for being persistent!
It still begs the question why some people are experiencing very slow imports, damaged image files, and other related import problems from memory cards? My guess (and it's only a guess) is that they have 1) 'Rename Files,' 2) 'Automatically write changes into XMP,' or 3) 'Include Develop settings in metadata inside JPEG, TIFF and PSD files' checked in LR preferences. It would be a good idea for anyone experiencing import issues to try an import with these three (3) options unselected.
My apologies to the OP DBarman for going off topic. Hopefully the extra information and observations are helpful. -
Can anyone help me as to why my raw files in bridge are not showing as thumbnails as they normally do . I can seem to fix it

When I open my RAW files in Photoshop CC they are grainy and the JPEGS are not. What is going on? It doesn't seem to have anything to do with my CACHE levels either.

Automatically open raw files in camera raw
PLEASE READ the post before posting a reply as i may have already tried something you think might be the fix.
basics: latest version of all adobe CC 2014 products including bridge 6.1.0
win8.1
after i've imported raw files (either RW2 or CR2) it USED to be that when i double clicked on a file it automatically opened camera raw and then after my edits and i clicked OPEN IMAGE it would then open in pshop.
now they open in windows image viewer (sic)
SO
i went to EDIT>PREFERENCES and changed the specific camera files to open in pshop 2014. (as there's nothing that allows 'open in camera raw')
so now when i double click on a file in BRIDGE it opens PHOTOSHOP and THEN goes to Camera Raw 8.6
BUT...
i want to DOUBLE CLICK and open CAMERA RAW without going into pshop.
yes i know if i right click on the image it offers 'open in camera raw' which works, OR i can Ctrl+R and they open just fine,
but where can i set it so a double click (which is faster) does this automatically?
thanks in advance. What kind of TIFFs? Are they multi-layered, for instance? ACR will not open layered files.
Due to the current unavailability of clairvoyants and mind-readers in the forum, we respectfully request you supply sensible, complete details.

Working with Raw files in Aperture
I bought a DSL are camera recently and have been shooting RAW
Naturally my library is filling up with raw files
My question is - when I want to export a very high quality image how do I get it out of Aperture and keep it as a large ihigh-quality image in raw?
The export options that I have - from dragging to the desktop to sharing as- all end up leaving me with a JPEG image which might only be two or 3 MB. The raw file can often be 10 or 15 MB
So what is the best way to output the full image?I have a RAW file (22 mbs), I can see from your helpful guidance that I can go into Aperture/Preferences/Export and set the export format to (for example) Tiff 16 bit. When I do that the exported Tiff file is 53 mbs, sounds like I have a got a pretty full version there with all the information store in it so no compaints.
I have another option, export as jpeg in 'original size'. When I set that and then 'Share as email', the resulting image is 2.2 mbs. Do you think a 2.2mb jpeg can be the full high quality image ?
My knowledge of this area, isas you can see, a bit limited. I do understand that if I was sending the image to a printer to get a high quality image, I would send him the 53 mb Tiff file, but is the 2.2 mb jpeg a lower resolution cut doewn version of the original ?

RAW files converted to JPGs - why?
Pics shot in RAW format in my Minolta A2 camera appear correctly as MRW files of 11.6mb each when imported into iPhoto. However, when I look for them in the iPhoto Library (in their correct catalogue position under year/month/date) they are displayed as JPG files. This used not to happen, and other iPhoto users say their files are corrctly tagged as RAW. Conversion to JPG of course means loss of quality with compression, negating the whole purpose of shooting in RAW. I should be able to import photos from the iPhoto Library into Photoshop as RAW files for processing there before export and any compression. Something seems to have changed, but I can't figure out what. Any suggestions?
First off, editing a RAW image results in the modified photo being saved in JPG format. The original RAW image is still there however. If you want something lossless, check your iPhoto preferences. There is a setting that causes edited RAW images to be converted to TIFF, or you can have it send RAW files to an external editor. Note that RAW is just an electronic negative format. In order to do anything with it anyway, there is a rasterization phase that converts it to JPEG or TIFF or some other format for editing and printing.
Bring up iPhoto help, and search for keywords "edit RAW". There is an item "Working with photos taken in RAW format" that will give you more information.
If you find this helpful or if it solves your problem, please indicate this by clicking the appropriate icon in the header of this reply.
