Raw Import Preview from EOS 30d
Hi All,
I've got a question regarding RAW importing from a Canon EOS 30D. There are no previews only blank boxes with the image no. at the bottom. If I'm importing jpegs from the camera it's fine I can see the preview image. Also, is it possible to tell Aperture not to import duplicate images? Kind of like iphoto does where it gives you the option of ignoring images on the card that are already in the library.

Thanks for your response. The camera was directly
connected to my MBP in both instances (with Aperture
and Lightroom). I do, however, have a SanDisk card
reader on order. Will see if that makes a difference.
Just an update: got the card reader yesterday and did a couple of RAW shoots to test-import previews showed up right away. Hopefully this has fixed the problem.

Aperture 3.3.1 not able to generate previews from EOS 1D Mk11
Aperture 3.3.1 is constantly crashing after starting.
My usual import of files goes something like this (All RAW)
Import files from no.1 camera, normally a 1D mk 4 into a new project
Import files from no.2 camera, normally a 1Dmk 3 into the same project
Import files from no.3 camera, normally a 1D mk2 into the same project
On completion of the imports Aperture tries to generate previews and sticks on the 1Dmk2 ones and crashes
I have tried repairing permisions, fixing databases etc but all to no avail.
If I take the same files into Lightroom 4 I have no problems
If I take them into Photo Mechanic I have no problems
If I take them into C! I still have no problems
Unfortunately it is Aperture I am most comfortable using (simply because I have used it professionally for 6 or so years) and it is the one I am not able to use because of this silly bug
I have tried starting it with the shift button down, but as soon as I delete one so called corrupt file it then hangs on the next one from the same camera.
Is there a fix for this that I am missing, or do I just learn to get on with Lightroom 4 and forget all about Aperture?Process: Aperture [77154]

Hi Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong? When importing raw files off the camera(canon eos400d) into lightroom 1.1 the preview pane shows only grey squares. I can still check or uncheck them, though not much point when I can't see them! I can see jpegs I'm importing in the preview pane. If I'm importing from a folder on the hard drive I can see the raw files in preview pane. I can preview and import them with the canon eos utility. Why wont lightroom show these previews?

Firstly I havent got a card reader, (but then I could get one.)
I cant see how anything could be much easier then plugging in one end of a usb cable into the camera
It just seems such an obvious missing feature in a program designed to simplify working with raw files.
Anyway, I can work around it by importing with the canon utility, and then accessing files from the hard drive into lightroom. A bit convoluted, and I'm still hoping for an update to fix it. Cheers -
Lightroom 1.1 + Vista = No RAW import direct from canon 400D
My laptop runs on XP and my desktop on Vista and I have a 400D, lightroom 1.1, PS CS2 and camera raw 4.1. I've just migrated my workflow into lightroom which i'm enjoying.
Both computers read and edit RAW files fine and i've exported and imported catlogs between them.
My laptop imports RAW files from my camera but my desktop (vista) says that there are no files to import. Either i've done something wrong in setting up lightroom or there appears to be some kind of driver problem.
I can see them in windows, copy them off my camera in windows and then import them in lightroom from my computer, but not directly from my cameraThe same problem:

Import Previews are very poor/pixelated ... D90 RAW
When I am importing my NEF files from my D90 with a card reader, my import previews are of a very poor image quality. Once the images are imported, previews look great.

I am using a Nikon D100 and since few Weeks a D300 too and I do not have such trouble with the previews as you describe. Well, I do ever take a look to each image at full screen size and zoom it in to 100 % of size before I delete a photo. Thats can not be done in the simple preview window at import.
Yes, Adobe Lightroom has partly some advantages over Aperture, but what I ever saw and tried out with Lightroom - for me - only the printing capabilities are the one, of which Aperture has to pass.
I do have now over 15 thousend of photos in my Aperture library and do not want to switch over to Lightroom because of better printing features. If you like to switch over, do it - there is no reason to stay on with Aperture. Except you are using many of Apple Apps.
I use iMovie 09 and Final Cut Express for creating slide shows of my photos, more seldom I use iPhoto for this. I do a lot of lay out work with Pages, use iWeb for some of my sites and so on. Within all of them I use without any pain the photobrowser with photos from my Aperture library. That can not be done with Lightroom, for example.

Raw files missing in import direct from canon eos 350D
Hi,
I realise that files missing for import is fairly common, but I still haven't been able to find a reason. I can load jpg and cr2 from a folder no problem, but when I attach the camera, using the latest canon WIA driver on windows xp, the window that comes up shows only the jpgs on my camera. I realise that a workaround is to get the files on the pc and import from there, but I don't have my canon software anymore to do that, and besides, I'm using the trial version to decide whether or not to buy. Is this a LR problem? a canon one? and is there a fix in the pipeline?
Apart from that, really like the product.

There was a problem with version 1.0 about importing JPG's and RAW's because although they have a different suffix i.e. JPG or CR2 they have the same file name. LR, as primarily a RAW converter sees these as one and the same file and only imported the RAW file. The work round for this was to rename the JPG's slightly outside of LR using a name that you could yourself identify with the original RAW e.g. RAW 0000001.crs with the JPG being renamed to 0000001A.JPG followed by Importing. I had thought they had cured this with the update but as I don't shoot JPG + RAW haven't tried this for myself. What's strange about your post though, is that if memory serves me correctly the problem lay not in the Importing of the RAW file but in the JPG file as described above. Perhaps someone with more up to date knowledge of this will jump in here.
The importing directly from the camera I referred to earlier was a known problem with Canon cameras - perhaps something to do with the folder structure although I couldn't swear to it. Hence the reference to using a Card Reader. In any event downloading from a Card Reader is faster as I'm sure you know.
If you right click and explore the Card you'll find that not all of the files are empty. The top folder will be something like DCM and by double clicking on this top folder it will open up the others. -
Hi, when I am importing pictures from my Canon EOS Rebel T3i, Lightroom shows "Preview Unavailable for this file" for all the raw files. I was testing Lightroom in a class a few days ago and I could preview all the raw files before importing them. How do I set the settings correctly so I can see the raw files in the preview mode BEFORE I import them? Thank you
Are you using the camera to transfer the images to your computer? Canons often have trouble doing that. What happens if you use a card reader?

I purchased Lightroom 5, loaded it on my Mac, and updated to version 5.6. I then tried importing photos from my Sony DSC-RX100iii. Unfortunately it only imports JPEG files but no RAW files. What is the problem and how do I fix it?
Than LR should have brought in the RAW files as well. ACR is the RAW
processing engine used by LR under the covers so anything not supported by
ACR would not be supported by Lightroom.
Are you shooting RAW plus JPEG? By default, Lightroom will stack then
unless you tell it not to. Check to see if there is a small badge on the
preview that looks like two sheets of paper with a number. That is how
Lightroom indicates a stack. You can unstack them by clicking on the badge.
There is also a menu item to stack/unstack photos. Otherwise, I would have
to research but not sure why Lightroom would ignore the RAW photos but
still import the JPEGS. -
Can't read Raw files from EOS 700D in CS4
How do I update CS4 and Bridge with ACR 5.0 to accept .CR2 files from EOS 700D? Have tried downloading and installing ACR 5.7 but bridge still opens using 5.0. Any assistance greatly aappreciated, thanks.
As i already mentioned support for EOS D700 starts in ACR 7.4 so ACR 5.7 won't open Raw files from this camera.
However, you can use DNG converter to convert Raw files into DNG and import in CS4 aaplication.
The Digital Negative (DNG) format is Adobe’s proposed standard format for camera raw files. DNG files are useful for archiving camera raw images because they contain the raw camera sensor data and data specifying how the image should look. Camera raw image settings can be stored in DNG files instead of in sidecar XMP files or the camera raw database.

Problem importing photos from my Cann 30D... PLEASE HELP!

I just installed my ilife 08, and since I have a problem importing the pictures from my Canon 30D into my mac.
I was able to do so before the installation (the usual, connecting the camera with a USB, iphoto opening and Import). Now when I connect the camera nothing happens.
Please help!

Noa.I generally use a card reader rather than connecting direct to camera but just tried my Canon 30D with USB.
EOS Utility opened first - don't know if you have this installed.
I quit that, nothing happened.
Opened iPhoto which was not running and photos appeared for import and imported ok.
So 30D imports do work.
If you have a card reader, can you import from that - if not it might suggest your images are corrupted on the card. Do they playback fine in-camera?
I suspect you have a corrupt installation of iPhoto or Mac OS or just some old files that are not behaving with the new installation.
Do you have any plugings installed?

A few days ago I got back late with my days work and went about importing it into Aperture as per usual. It was a big job so while the import was taking place I decided to export another job that was wanted the next morning. This client needed origonal RAW files (NEF nikon) so I selected 'all' and chose 'export originals' from the File menu. These then went to my desktop, ready to be uploaded to a client FTP. So.. this is where the scary stuff started. The import went fine but the export was a disaster. They appeared (on the desktop folder) with the preview as cover flow being the same as the import. When trying to open them they come up as completely black images. Ok, stay with me, this gets worse. Going back to the Aperture project, many of the correctly displaying previews have now turned black also, remaining previews when clicked on turn black. I've checked in the package contents of the library and have found the import master files correctly archived. The master files for the export though (the ones I'm desperately looking for) still view as the same image as the import. They do however have the file number of the exported files. I hope this makes sense. I really need to locate these missing original NEF files. Please help..
You can just try it with one image to start with, perhaps even one that youaren't having a problem with just to get the idea.

In the Browser, select an image or group of images whose JPEG previews you want to update.
Control-click the image selection, then choose Update Previews from the shortcut menu.
You can also force the rebuilding of previews for an image selection.

In the Browser, select an image or group of images whose JPEG previews you want to force Aperture to update.
Hold down the Option key while Control-clicking the image selection, then choose Generate Previews from the shortcut menu.

I'm not certain that it'll help your problem, but it rang a bell with me as I had some images with black previews in an old library I was looking at last week and I used the force procedure to get the previews back how they should be.

When you import Raw to iPhoto the app makes a jpeg preview of the Raw automatically. When you import from iPhoto then Aperture brings over both versions.

Cannot import photos from CF card (raw) LR 2.5
After i installed 2.5 update, suddenly LR will not import photos from my CF cards. These raw files can be seen with preview, but when I try to import them Lightroom seem to be converting images to DNG, but after that process message appears saying that LR could`.t import I have tried rebooting the iMac running Leopard O.S., but it made no difference. I also tried deleting the Lightroom preference file, that didn`t help eather.
CF cards are working perfectly with 2,4 version, on MacBook Pro..
Does anybody have a solution?I thought so too, but images was not to find on my hard drive..
Funny thing is when i tried to import regular JPG files from some other SD card, it worked perfectly.
I always shoot in raw, and i always choose to convert to DNG while importing.
I am suspecting that it might be something wrong with this new raw update!

I'm trying to import raw CR2 files from my camera into LR5. I get a message "Files appear to be unsupported or damaged." I know they are not damaged. Does LR5 support raw files? I can do this in Bridge and it converts them to dng files. This would be ideal for me if both could be done in LR5.
Not sure what the problem is if you say the files re recognized in Bridge? You could test the CR2 files by downloading the free Adobe DNG converter - latest version 8.6 (keep your CR2 originals as backups and for use in the camera manufactures software)and then import the DNG’s. It’s an extra step but I use it all the time to batch process into final folders.

I use Photoshop CS5 Extended (Version 12.1 x64). I can open the raw-Images (cr2) from my Canon EOS 1000d/Rebel XT but I can not open the RAW-Images (cr2) from my Canon EOS 650D (Rebel T4i). I have installed the latest update for CS5 through the updaate command.
How can I open them?

Support for RAW from Rebel T4i was launched in ACR 7.2 (Adobe Camera Raw). However, ACR 7.x is compatible only from CS6, not on CS5.
