Rc.cleanup in 10.4?

I do not have /etc/rc.cleanup in my computer.
Is it gone from 10.4? Or, am I, my computer, that is, missing something?
10.4.3 (iBook)
I am checking another iBook running Panther and it has said file.
Thanks
Deivy

Hi Deivy,
Always good to hear from you.
Written any good AppleScripts lately?
Hi Gary, thanks for chiming in.
No, no real new AppleScript scripts, some old ones getting some new display.
However, talking about new AppleScript scripts, I am about to start working on a teacher's swiss army knife with some new "cool" (<-- sorry) features. Do you want to help me with it? You have to basically use it.
Anybody else out there?

The cleanup of
/private/tmp at boot is now done in the /etc/rc
script, after line 104. It moves /private/tmp to
/private/tmp, unlocks locked files in it and adds
the new directory to the RMRF_ITEMS variable.
Everything in that variable is removed later.
I think the "periodic daily" job
also does it "periodically". Do you have the
following in your /etc/periodic/daily/500.daily
file?
Yep! And I run the "repairs" script from my Applescript menu, so it is handy and I run them when I want.
Answering Michael, yes, I have 10.4.3.
if [ -d /tmp ]; then
cd /tmp && {
find . -fstype local -type f -atime
+3 -ctime +3 -exec rm -f -- {} \;
find -d . -fstype local ! -name .
-type d -mtime +1 -exec rmdir -- {} \; \
>/dev/null 2>&1;
fi
Note to self: I have to start paying more attention to shell scripting.
Now, I could not find the daily.local, are you suppose to create one, if you want changes ?
Also, Michael, thanks for the launchd links, I got it. It is nice to have a plist file to set jobs, however, can't one still use "at"? I love "at" .
Thanks again

Honestly this is something MS should check into. There should be an easier way for users to implement this command rather then a complete dictionary to fix broken windows files. This is a Microsoft windows problem. I know for myself I had to use this command
quite often because I installed something windows did not like. Because of that window files became unusable. It would make practical sense for Microsoft to incorporate a feature that runs these commands in administration tools.
Run
Dism /Online /Cleanup-image/ScanHealth
if that runs an error then run
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup
then run
dism /online /cleanup-image /retorehealth

Edit: Microsoft has to make a serious decision. During setup, Metro, or desktop. Installing items in desktop mode is creating errors in Metro or windows store items. In future upgrades consider the flavors of OS, implement a users
choice. Desktop, Metro, or classic. Face the facts if you follow Linux method of desktop, and the install process. There is no confusion between desktops and we have a choice. This makes common sense. I like the feature of gnome or Ubunto it gives
the user a choice and a better picture for Microsoft. Lets face it, Bill Gates choose to hand over his business to people. This gave Bill Gates time to help other people that need help. How about Microsoft do the same and give people the choice between
desktops during install. Follow Bill Gates important roll in his life now. Bring some fairness and happiness to people that like Microsoft and what to help users get what they want and the best support they need. Doing this allows Microsoft the glory
to help people feel good about themselves. Sure MS can live in a dictatorship roll and continue to bully users to use the product, there is a consequence to this. Good young developers are working on a better OS and this is going to happen. It is better
to help people then to fight people.

• How can we cleanup invalidated archive sessions (remove from UNIX)

Over the years, we have accumulated many invalidated archive session files in our archive directory in UNIX. We would love to remove these invalidated session files to free up space.
We have been looking at BC_ARCHIVE ... but the documentation on it only mentions the archive of logs ... not the cleanup of invalid session files that need to be deleted
Can we just delete the files of sessions that are invalid? Or must we perform some function in SAP to delete them? SAP ... can you document the process for this?

Hi,
You can simply delete the archive files at unix level thats all. No need to do anything else in SAP.
Cheers!

• In Elements 12 Organizer, View Full Screen images are not loading. Have already tried disc cleanup.

It was working a couple of days ago, now when I select several images to view full screen, the page comes up, but the images don't. I have a PC, and have already tried doing a disc cleanup and defragmentation.

I’ve found a work-round.
This is embarrassing (for Adobe), as the work-round is to set the CPU affinity to single cpu mode. With that PSE 10 has been running in slide show mode for 3 hours now. Looking good!
On a temporary basis, from the task manager, show the ‘processes’ tab, right click on the PhotoshopElementsOrganizer.exe *32 process, choose ‘Set Affinity …’ unselect ‘All’ and select (check) any one CPU. (Under W7 32 bit I guess you won’t get the *32)
For a more permanent fix, using the start command with the affinity option is needed. This is not compatible with the PSE 10 launcher though, if you use the launcher you will need to set the affinity as shown above.
To use the start command, from a command prompt type start /? for the syntax..
Try a google search of “how to set the processor affinity” for further advice.
Now, should Adobe be reading this thread I have some advice for them:
“It is NOT POSSIBLE to conduct a reliability test of a program using a virtualized environment”.
I made the error of assuming that after the PSE 6 fiasco in a multi-cpu environment Adobe would not make the same mistake again. Well, they have. Perhaps this time they will conduct a root cause analysis of what they are doing wrong with their test plans and FIX IT, because I object to doing their testing for them, again.

• How to handle a LabVIEW error in TestStand cleanup code

When a LabVIEW VI in TestStand's main sequence (Main) has an error, I would like to access this error cluster in the TestStand clean up sequence (Cleanup). It the error cluster information stored somewhere?
Solved!
Go to Solution.

The problem is that the Cleanup section cannot see that Step.Result.Error.
In order to pass that Step.Result.Error information to the Cleanup section, I could copy it into a StationGlobals variable I create, but I would have to do that for every LabVIEW module in the Main section. I'm hoping that information is automatically available to the Cleanup section without me having to add code to every single LabVIEW module in the Main section.
Is that Step.Result.Error information available to the Cleanup section somewhere without me having to add code to the Main section?

• SMON cleanup process taking longer time (cleaning temporary extents)

Os info: Solaris 5.8
Oracle info: 9.2.0.8
Message:
We are in the process of testing our upgrade from 9.2.0.8 to 11.2.0.3. As a part of this, we have cloned our production database and started cleaning up of unused objects on the new instance.
Dropped an Audit Table (27g table size & 11g index size) from SYSTEM tablespace as a part of 11g upgrade tasks. As you know SYSTEM tablespace is under Dictionary managed tablespace and drop table ran for about 2 weeks.
We are unable to bring this database gracefully, as SMON is still cleaning the temporary extents. This cleanup seems to be very slow and will take about 40+ days.
Created SR regarding this issue, to speed up the SMON clean up process.. but no luck.
At this moment we are looking for a solution to
1#Is there a way to speed up the SMON cleanup process (temporary extents)?
OR
2# Is there a way to bypass the cleanup of this temporary segment and bring the database gracefully?
No Luck from Oracle Support...
Googled it but no luck.
Just want to check with the folks over here and see if there is any solution for this issue.
Thanks in advance for your time and efforts on this forum. Appreciate your assistance!
Thanks,
Raghu Yella.

Just passing by.

If the data is not needed, drop the index, truncate the table and then drop the table (as rp0428 noted above)
>
Srini and rp0428, what do you guys know that I don't? A "drop table" (which is what the OP indicated was run) should drop any data (effectively the same thing as a truncate) and all associated indexes. Does the truncate offer some performance benefit in this case?
And I'm still trying to wrap my head around a 40 day drop. The statement, "started cleaning up of unused objects" scares me if there is more backup tables in this bloated SYSTEM tablespace. If that is the case (and maybe regardless), I wonder if it would just be better to create a fresh "clean" database and then with transportable tablespaces reattach all the DATA tablespaces to this new database. Fresh start.

• Deleted failed DC from the domain (Server 2012 R2) - Now after doing metadata and DNS cleanup, I can no longer promote a new DC to the domain

I work for a university and teach IT courses to undergrad and graduate students. The details below are pertaining an isolated lab environment
I had a storage failure in my lab and the DCs became corrupt. This is a university lab environment so there isn't anything crucial on here. I just would rather avoid rebuilding the domain/forest and would rather use this as a learning experience with my
students...
So after the storage failed and was restored, the VMs hosted became corrupt. I did a NTDSUTIL to basically repair the NDTS.dit file but one of my DCs reverted to a state before DC promotion. Naturally, the domain still had this object in AD. After numerous
failed attempts at trying to reinstall the DC on the server through the server manager wizard in 2012 R2, I decided that a metadata cleanup of the old failed object was necessary.
Utilizing this article, I removed all references of the failed DC from both AD and DNS (http://www.petri.com/delete_failed_dcs_from_ad.htm)
So now that the failed object is removed completely from the domain and the metadata cleanup was successful, I then proceeded to re-install the necessary AD DS role on the server and re-promote to the existing domain. Pre-Requisites pass but generate some
warning around DNS Delgation, and Dynamic Updates (delegation is ignored because the lab is isolated from external comms, and dynamic updates are in fact enabled on both my _msdcs and root domain zones).
Upon the promotion process, I get the following error message (also worth mentioning - the account performing these operations is a member of DA, EA, and Schema Admins)
The operation failed because:
Active Directory Domain Services could not create the NTDS Settings object for this Active Directory Domain Controller CN=NTDS Settings,CN=domainVMDC1,CN=Servers,CN=Default-
First-Site-Name,CN=Sites,CN=Configuration,DC=domain,DC=school,DC=edu on the remote AD DC domainVMDC2. Ensure the provided network credentials have sufficient permissions.
"While processing a change to the DNS Host Name for an object, the Service Principal Name values could not be kept in sync."
As you can see, this error seems odd considering. Now that I'm down to a single DC and DNS server, the sync should be corrected. I've run a repadmin /syncall and it completed successfully. Since then, I've run dcdiags and dumped those to a text as well and
here are my results...

From what I can gather, there is a definite DNS issue but I don't have any stale records to the old DC stored anywhere. I've tried this with a new server as well and get similar errors...
At this rate I'm ready to rebuild the entire forest over again. I'm just reluctant to do so as I want to make this a learning experience for the students.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

As you can see, there seems to be some errors. The one that I did correct was the one around the _msdcs NS record being unable to resolve. For whatever, reason the name wasn't resolving the IP but all other NS tabs and records were. Just that one _msdcs
sub-zone. Furthermore, the mentioning of any connections to root hint servers can be viewed as false positives. There is no external comms to this lab so no communication with outside IPs can be expected. Lastly, they mentioned a connectivity issue yet mention
that I should check the firewall settings. All three profiles are disabled in Windows Firewall (as they have been the entire time). Thank you in advance for your help!

Is this something I can repair. Any help would be appreciated. The setup event logs mentions 2 errors, so presumably this is the issue.

Use the "source" option to specify the location of the files that are required to restore the feature."
If we read the documentation, we might infer we can use any existing WinSxS as source?
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh825265.aspx
<quote>
You can restore and enable a feature that has previously been removed from the image. Use the
/Source argument to specify the location of the files that are required to restore the feature. The source of the files can by the Windows folder in a mounted image, for example c:\test\mount\Windows. You can also use a Windows side-by-side
folder as the source of the files, for example z:\sources\SxS.
If you specify multiple /Source arguments, the files are gathered from the first location where they are found and the rest of the locations are ignored. If you do not specify a
/Source for a feature that has been removed, the default location in the registry is used or, for online images, Windows Update (WU) is used.
Use /LimitAccess to prevent DISM from contacting WU for online images.
</quote>
That quote was actually from under the /Enable-Feature operand but the /Source: operand has wider scope.
Compare the briefer description of the same operand given later under the /Cleanup-Image operand
<quote>
Use /Source with /RestoreHealth to specify the location of known good versions of files that can be used for the repair, such as a path to the Windows directory of a mounted image.
If you specify multiple /Source arguments, the files are gathered from the first location where they are found and the rest of the locations are ignored. If you do not specify a
/Source for a feature that has been removed, the default location in the registry is used or Windows Update (WU) is used for online images.
Use /LimitAccess to prevent DISM from contacting WU for repair of online images.
</quote>
Does this mean the functionality is limited or that they were just trying to avoid being redundant?   ; }

• Problem with HP Officejet Pro 8500 printer: Ink is vanished without any prints due to cleanups.

Hello everybody,
The printer HP Officejet Pro all-in-one 8500A A910 cleans printheads every time I turn it on. printer was updated with the lastet driver but my yellow, cyan, magenta inks gets vansihed without taking any colour prints.I take only BLACK prints(less than 500) and do scans.
This is worse printer i have ever used. It is using inks while clean up at startup or in between.Frustating thing is that It is using ink even during SCANS. Now, i really doubt the intellegence of designers of hp to such a big BUG.
Please update the driver so that during startup it will ask for SCAN or Print OR Clean the printheads when first print is given and addition to optimise the cleanups.
Hoping to get some solution form HP.

Hi arr_8500,
I understand you have an Officejet 8500 A910 that is running the clean printhead function each time you turn it on. I will do my best to assist you with this.
The reason the printer keeps running the clean printhead function is self maintenance. The printer is detecting an issue, so it will continue to run the clean printhead function until it's not detecting an issue. I would suggest you follow through this Fixing Ink Streaks, Faded Prints, and Other Common Print Quality Problems to help clean out any ink build up and things like that. I'd also recommend that you manually clean your printheads to remove any build up there as well.
Finally, it's best to have your printer plugged directly to a wall outlet. If it's not already in one, please move it.
Hope this helps, have a great day!!
Please click “Accept as Solution ” if you feel my post resolved your issue, as it will help others find the solution faster

• Target operation is unavailable: cleanup of previous target with the same n

Greetings,
In OEM 12c I have several clusters. For one, from the console I deleted the cluster and then manually added the cluster target back. The operation was successful but for one of the high availability (has) services a metric collection error is displayed. For that particular target the EMDIAG output reports -
Target operation is unavailable: cleanup of previous target with the same name is still pending
I have not been able to find an explanation of that nor how to resolve it. Can anyone assist me?
Thank you.
Bill Wagman

Hi,
You can remove the target from monitoring and add it again, that can solve the problem.

SDK-22824: sourceLastPlayed keeps track of what video file we?\226?\128?\153ve called play() with last. This way if a user pauses the video and wants to start it up again at the same point, we can call play(null) on the underlying FLVPlayback videoPlayer. However, anytime the souce changes, we want to null out sourceLastPlayed. This was causing a bug when someone set the source to null and then reset it to it?\226?\128?\153s previous value.
SDK-23034 (GUMBO_PRIORITY): This deals with some FLVPlayback quirks around sizing. I had put in a fix so we weren?\226?\128?\153t setting width/height on the underlying videoPlayer too many times, but apparently we need to make sure it always gets called once. Hopefully when switching to Strobe we can cleanup this logic...I put a FIXME in to do this.
SDK-21947/ SDK-22533 - some video files don?\226?\128?\153t always send out a metadata event. I?\226?\128?\153m not quite sure why this is, but in case this happens, we do a check in the ready handler to see whether we should call invalidateSize() to make sure it gets sized properly.

• Disk Cleanup in Windows 8.1 running by itself

Hi,
I'm having a strange problem. If I let my PC idle for around 5 minutes, the disk cleanup utility pops up and analyzes my PC, then
leaves the window open showing what could be cleaned up, etc. However, if I move the mouse, the window vanishes.
I'm running Win 8.1, and I have two hard drives, a 250GB SSD and a 1.5TB HD. I just installed the 1.5TB drive today, so that might
have something to do with it, but to be honest, I don't recall if this problem started before or after I installed the 1.5GB drive.
This is happening every 5 minutes or so - makes it hard to enjoy a movie or anything that would leave the computer idle. I Googled
a lot and couldn't find anything. I've run disk cleanup by hand and let it do its thing for both drives, but it didn't help.
Any ideas? It's getting annoying. I can't even drag it off to the side of the screen because it vanishes the moment I move the mouse.
If I can't figure it out, I guess I can unplug the 1.5TB and see if that fixes it. Then I will at least know the culprit.

Thanks for the ideas. I did check the startup tab in the Task Manager, but it only had things I expected to be there. Nothing strange that would cause disk cleanup to start.
However, Roger Lu is on the same track I am on. It is related to a task in the Task Scheduler. There are four items in particular that seem to be linked to each other:
Idle Maintenance
Manual Maintenance
Regular Maintenance
Maintenance Configurator
I'm fairly sure it is Regular Maintenance that is causing the issue. I went in and told it to not stop the process if my system was idle, after that disk cleanup stopped disappearing when I moved my mouse or had any other kind of input.
I am still tinkering with the others, setting them to not stop the maintenance as well to double check and make sure that they aren't compounding the problem.
I just wish there was a list of what Regular Maintenance does, and a way to change it, as with the other maintenance tasks too. I feel as though these shouldn't be disabled because Windows set them in the first place.
Could you talk a look in your Task Scheduler, then double click on Maintenance Configurator and tell me if you have the same four items as I do? Are any of them listed as running? Are they disabled or ready?
I'm just about ready to disable the one that is causing problems, and re-enable it once a month or so to let it do whatever it is it does.
Here's some screenshots for you, Robert Lu and others:

• How do I get back some files (such as what I believe are called style sheets after I cleanup my system by deleting what another program believes are temp files?

I use Windows 7 and Firefox 23.
I use either iSafe or WiseCare 365 to cleanup my system once in a while.
In that process many "temporary" files are deleted, which is fine for really temporary files.
What bothers me is that the next time I open Firefox, my previously open Web sites appear differently.
I believe this is due to a loss of the style sheet files that they use.
In the past I have fixed this problem by resetting Firefox to its basic state.
But then I lose all the tabs that were previously open.
How can keep those files that give the Web sites their appearance?

Use build-in means to clear personal data in the Firefox profile folder and exclude the Firefox profile folder from those cleanup program because they usually do more harm than being useful.
Main profile folder:
*C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\
Cache folder and other data:
*C:\Users\<user>\AppData\LocalMozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\
*Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history": [X] "Clear history when Firefox closes" > Settings

Note that clearing "Site Preferences" clears all exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, and passwords.
