RDP Via Essentials Server - Bandwidth Management

The RDP Gateway hosts a secure connection between the client and the RD server. It opens the tunnel on port 443 and verifies that the user has permissions to access the requested RD server. Other than that, speed is almost completely on your internet connection and the RDS host.

Does an RDP connection via a Remote Desktop Gateway route all traffic through the gateway server? Or does the gateway just secure the connection and let the two clients talk together? I am trying to optimize my bandwidth management as the RDP connection seems to get weak at random times.

  • Shutdown(block='false') only works via Admin Server, not managed servers

    Hello,
We want to shut down all 10 managed servers in our domain gracefully, and in parallel. 5 of those managed servers are on the same OS/host as the AdminServer, the other 5 are on a separate OS/host (i.e. we have 5 x 2-node clusters).
I'm writing scripts to gracefully shut down all of our servers upon an OS reboot command. On the OS with the AdminServer (and 5 managed servers), I can simply do this:
    connect(user, pwd, http://localhost:7001)
    shutdown('myserver1', 'Server', block='false')
    shutdown('myserver3', 'Server', block='false')
    shutdown('myserver5', 'Server', block='false')
    shutdown('myserver7', 'Server', block='false')
    shutdown('myserver9', 'Server', block='false')
All 5 servers will be shutting down at the same time. If they each took 2 minutes to shut down, the whole shutdown process would take 2 minutes.
However, on the OS running the other managed servers, I cannot assume that the AdminServer [on the other OS] will be online. Hence, I would like to gracefully shut down each server locally like this:
    connect(user, pwd, url='t3://localhost:8001')
    shutdown(block='false')
    disconnect()
    connect(user, pwd, url='t3://localhost:9001')
    shutdown(block='false')
    disconnect()
    connect(user, pwd, url='t3://localhost:10001')
    shutdown(block='false')
    disconnect()
    connect(user, pwd, url='t3://localhost:11001')
    shutdown(block='false')
    disconnect()
    connect(user, pwd, url='t3://localhost:12001')
    shutdown(block='false')
    disconnect()
NOTE that the ports are different (i.e. I connect via WLST to the managed servers themselves rather than to the AdminServer).
Unfortunately, in this scenario, the block='false' does not work. WLST waits until the managed server is shut down before proceeding to the next connect() command. So if each server took 2 minutes to shut down, the whole shutdown process now takes 10 minutes.
We don't want to use the nmKill() command on the local Node Manager because we want a graceful shutdown.
What options do we have to issue a graceful shutdown command either to a local Node Manager or to the managed servers themselves (since we can't expect the AdminServer to be online when our script runs)?
    Best regards,
    Michael

    Hi Mike,
WLST will create it temp directory with /var/tmp/wlstTemp which is shared by all users. Since we cannot differentiated by different users which cause block on particular user at that time.
One solution is to grant write access to all users to the directory where the WLST temporary directory is created (e.g. on Solaris /var/tmp; you can verify the default on your system by executing java utils.getProperty and search for java.io.tmpdir).
If for whatever reason you cannot grant these access modes on the temporary directory, then you can create a directory somewhere on the file system where every user has the correct permissions.
Start the scripting tool with one the following options to redirect the cache files to the specified directory. Dependent on your environment one or the other will apply.
    java -Djava.io.tmpdir=<path-to-tmpDir> weblogic.WLST
    or
    java -Dpython.cachedir=<path-to-tmpDir> weblogic.WLST
This will be useful to make shutdown of servers without any problem.
Note: block=false will always works it should not be the problem.
    Regards,
    Kal

  • Non-admin Users SQL Server Configuration Manager

    Hi Everyone,
I'm wondering if it's possible to grant non-admin users to start/stop SQL services using SQL Server Configuration Manager. Using the sc command, I was able to grant non-admin users access to services applet in Windows.
However, our DBA said that the best practice to stop/start SQL is via SQL Server Configuration Manager. Based on testing, they are unable to stop/start SQL from SQL Server Configuration
Manager though they are able to do so (stop/start SQL services) via Services applet.

Check these links.. Yes you can stop/start SQL is via SQL Server Configuration Manager, services.msc,

Also, I cant connect locally via SQL Server Management Studio.
Any ideas on where to start?
    Have SQL Server 2008 R2

    Try DAC first:

If that fails, go to Configuration Manager and restart the server.

  • Can I distribute s/mime certificates to MDM managed users via Mavericks Server?

We have a private CA and right now users have to share S/MIME certificates with others manually. Is is possible to embed these certs into each user in Address Book, or distribute them some other way using Mavericks Server?

Couldn't fix the problem. Had to attach another external storage drive to each computer to use for backup, then erase and rename the TimeCapsule hard drive via Airport utility as well as the second hard drive in the MacMini Server via Disk Utility. I removed both the Time Capsule drive and the second internal hard drive from the "Settings" pane in the "Time Machine" section of Server.
I still have no idea of what went wrong or if the problem will happen again. It may have been a corrupted file on the backup drives. It may have been Tech Tool Pro or Adode Creative Cloud updater, who knows. But for now, it is working as anticipated. The iMac clients and the MacMini Server are all backed up to the Time Capsule as well as the Mac Mini Server's second internal drive.
I sure wish there were better documentation available for using Server to manage Time Machine backups!

    Hi Shaun
Tried both of your suggestions, however neither strategy worked.
    Strategy 1
Tried installing via powershell - "install-windowsfeature -name fs-resource-manager -includemanagementtools"
Feature un-installed itself during the restart.
Attempted to use the command "DISM /online /remove-feature /featurename:FSRM-Infrastructure-Services".  However
this did work because one the Service was'nt installed or two because there was no command option for "/remove-feature"

  • HP LaserJet 4350dtnsl, on Windows 7 x64 RDP to 2003 server

    Hi,
I have a client with  HP LaserJet 4350dtnsl network attached and accessed from a Windows 7 x64. They RDP to a server 2003 server via VPN and the printer will not push to the remote session. They also have a network Colour 3600 which works fine.
I am using the Windows 7 driver installed via update, PCL5 but cannot find a 2003 PCL5 driver, only PCL5e.
If anyone has seen or can help your assistance would be appreciated.
    Regards
    Mark
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

PCL5 is a rather loose term; for at least the last decade, drivers for new PCL5 printers have been one or the other of:
    PCL5e - PCL5 enhanced for monochrome printers.
    PCL5c - PCL5 enhanced for colour printers.
Even those terms are not precise, since the set of PCL escape sequences supported by one PCL5e printer may not be exactly the same as those supported by a different model, especially if those models are from different ranges / generations.

  • [Forum FAQ] Cannot perform a backup schedule via Windows Server Backup and receive "The system cannot find the path specified." Error

    Symptom One
    You attempt to
schedule a backup every day via Windows Server Backup on Windows Server 2008 R2. At the beginning, the backup works without issue. But after a few days it failed and you receive the error “Windows Server Backup:
The system cannot find the path specified.”
    Cause
The issue may occur if there is
no shadow copy storage space available on the backup volume.
    Verify
You can use the List ShadowStorage command to check if you have enough storage space to store the newly created shadow copy. If you've reviewed the size of the backup snapshot and discovered
that there is no allocated space for the storage association, you need to resize shadowstorage.
    Solution
You could run the command below to create shadow copy storage space on the backup volume:
    vssadmin resize
    shadowstorage /for=<ForVolumeSpec> /on=<OnVolumeSpec> [/maxsize=<MaxSizeSpec>]
    More Information
    Vssadmin resize shadowstorage
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc788050.aspx
    Symptom Two
    When you add
another external hard drive to backup schedule via Windows Server Backup on Windows Server 2012, it fails and you receive the error “The System cannot find the path specified.”
    Cause
The issue is due to the
Original Destination Disk was not attached to the server.
    Verify
You could check the disk status in Disk Management to see if the Original Destination Disk is offline or removed.
    Solution
    You need to attach
Original Destination Disk to the Server then choose another external hard drive as backup target. After that, you could remove the Original Destination Disk.
    Workaround
To work around this issue, please use the WBADMIN command line tool to add disk.
    WBADMIN ENABLE BACKUP -addtarget :{ DiskID}
The AddTarget parameter takes disk ID as parameter. It can be retrieved by running "WBADMIN GET DISKS" command.
    Example:
    WBADMIN ENABLE BACKUP
    -addtarget :{ aa123d14-bba0-1dd9-0d93-80aaaa6bbb63}

  • Bandwidth Management(Rate Limit) Using QoS Policies

    Hello,
I need some advice. We have an ASA 5525 running version 8.6(1)2 and a 10 MG pipe. I have execs that want to limit bandwidth on users for stuff like youtube, stream media, and downloads. I found the article on ‘Bandwidth Management(Rate Limit) Using QoS Policies’ so it appears our firewall can do what we want. I’m not a cisco person. My knowledge is limited when it comes to configuration – that’s why we have SmartNet :). The advice I need is what to ask for, so to speak, when I put a case in. Can bandwidth be limited on end users and/or can they limit the ‘bandwidth rate limit’ to just youtube, steaming media, and downloads? If so, what should the limit be? and I’m assume this would be for ‘incoming’ traffic only? we’re running into some bandwidth hogs – usually youtube and/or streaming media. We have a Barracuda web filter which we’ve used to block and monitor activity but I simply do not have time to babysit this all day. I should also mention we do have critical data running up and down the pipe; such as credit card processing, DB replication between in house DB and hosted website, TPCx and EDI, FTP, and such that we don’t want restricted.
    Need input please,
    Thanks,
    D

    Hello,
That's a question that you as the network admin of that organization could answer.
How much traffic for business purposes must travel via HTTP/HTTPS?
How much bandwith are you willing to provide to this 2 protocols?
Those are the kind of answers you need to answer before setting the number

  • RDP to virtual server stops connecting

I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V host running a number of virtual Windows 2008 R2 virtual servers.  I use RDP to remote in to manage the host and guest servers.  On occasion, I find I cannot RDP into one of my virtual servers.  I enter
the login credentials but the connecting dialog stays on screen and I do not connect.
I then RDP into the host and use Hyper-V Manager to view my running servers.  I see that the server I cannot get into is running at 5-6%.  Something is running on the server, apparently taking up resources and not allowing me to get in.  I
also cannot get in from the Hyper-V Manager.  I must reset this virtual server to gain access again.  This happens once or twice a month.  By the way, other users are still able to run apps from this server and it is pingable.
Can any one offer suggestions on what to look for, how to resolve this?
    Thanks

    Hi ,
Please check the VM's state in hyper-v manager when it "stopped" .
What is the host's OS ?
What is the guest OS ?
Did you check hyper-v log ( event viewer --> application and services log -->microsoft --> windows -->then check   hyper-v logs to find some useful information )
Also please check event log in VM .

It looks like you're seeing CSCte49301.  Follow the release note steps to solve this:
    Symptom:
The EssentialsDM daemon hangs in a Waiting to initialize state (as seen in the output of the pdshow command).  Additionally, one might see "Error connecting to JRM" in Resource Manager Essentials applications.
    Conditions:
This occurs on Windows servers after the patch for KB968930 is installed, and only if the Windows Remote Management service was started prior to starting CiscoWorks Daemon Manager.
    Workaround:
Shutdown CiscoWorks Daemon Manager with the following command from the server's command prompt:
    net stop crmdmgtd
    Delete the following two files:
    NMSROOT\MDC\tomcat\webapps\rme\WEB-INF\lib\ctmregistry
    NMSROOT\MDC\tomcat\webapps\rme\WEB-INF\lib\ctmregistry.backup
Restart CiscoWorks Daemon Manager with the following command:
    net start crmdmgtd
If that does not work, then the Windows Remote Management service must be stopped, and disabled.  Then, CiscoWorks Daemon Manager must be restarted.

  • Outlook  via Terminal Server possible ?

    Hello,
in the 9i release the Outlook Connector didn't work when outlook was accessed via Terminal Server and no local outlook installation was available.
Did this change with 10g ? Is this now possible ?
It would be important to have this function in order to do Application Service Providing
    with OCS.
    thanks,
    Jochen Zehe

    Hi, thanks for response.
Additionally i found the following in the doc:
As of 10g Release 1 (10.1.1), Oracle Connector for Outlook is certified to work with Windows Server 2003 Terminal Services. Terminal Services were conceived to provide organizations with a secure and cost-effective means of hosting Windows desktop sessions on a remote server. Remote users connect to a server through a desktop or Web interface and benefit from the full Windows experience without the overhead of running applications locally. Windows Server 2003 Terminal Services requires greater than normal bandwidth, and you must ensure that all drives are mapped correctly.

What I would like is to be able to restrict any SESSION to 300 kilobits or less depending on the IP Traffic type. Basically what I have is MS Terminal Servers connected to a C2950 switch in turn connected to a c2621 router which in turn sends RDP,Printing and Web Traffic back to clients, who are connected using PPPoe w/ C837's. Is it even possible to be able to restrict bandwidth by session, anywhere in this setup?
Thanks for any help. I just started researching QOS, Bandwidth Management and am lost as to where I should be looking for help. Due to the fact that I want to restrict by single sessions not by total amount of traffic, its confusing trying to get help.

You can do this with a 2950, as long as you run the EI image (enhanced). Check the QOS section where it says Policing in this document. Its in pdf format.
