Re-apply the Mac OS X 10.4.9 combo updater from an alternate startup volume

Most instructions that I have read say:
" Re-apply the Mac OS X 10.4.9 combo updater from an alternate startup volume. "
( Yep, I got the security update blues: which makes me always wonder if Apple programers can program an updater they should also program an uninstaller. )
However I do not have a alternate startup volume and I do not want to do that firewire thing by using another Mac.
After I insert the CD that that has the 1049 combo updater in my iMac20 drive can I install the updater from my eDrive ( TTPro 4.5 ) ?

I do not have a alternate startup volume
Then, just reapply it on the hosed startup volume. I know nothing about eDrives, but just copy the COMBO updater from the CD to the IMac and run it from there.
Your reluctance to use external FWHDs for bootable backups/clones severely limits your ability to restore the OS back to its previous incarnation. See http://www.macmaps.com/upgradefaq.html and http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/installswupdates.html for developing a proper strategy.

  • Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update unable to finish installing

    Hello:
I have been having trouble installing the Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update. This update is meant to fix a bigger problem I have had recently. I'll briefly describe the bigger problem.
A few weeks ago, I downloaded the latest updates for iTunes, Security, and Quicktime. Now from what I've gathered, Quicktime 7.2 probably caused a few applications (Microsoft apps and Photoshop app) to have trouble opening because of "shared library errors". Even my Quicktime is having trouble working right now.
This Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update is suppose to help resolve the issue, but it fails to install. Any insights as to what might be the actual problem installing the combo update would be greatly appreciated.

I have an emac and recently upgraded to Mac OS X (10.4.10)
I am using a wireless modem to connect to the internet. I am unable to download new versions of applications I already use.
    Error message:
A networking error has occurred: Error NSURLErrorDomain - 1005 (-1005). Make sure you can connect to the internet, then try again.
I have been advised to try several things, none of which worked.
Can anyone help. This seems to be a problem with the OS X, as I was able to download before I upgraded to the latest version.
    Thanks,

  • Mac OS X 10.6.3 Combo Update v1.1

    Hi out there,
I've tried to download the "Mac OS X 10.6.3 Combo Update v1.1", but if I opened the disk image I got a checksum error (same with the Security updates 003 for Leopard and Leopard server).
Does somebody know a link pointing to non-corrupted disk image files?

Where are you? ISP's often cache frequently accessed files on their own servers to reduce Internet traffic with other servers that are far away in other parts of the world. Thus, the same URL may not always access the same server or file, even though it appears that it does.
Because of this, if you manually download an update & have trouble with it, it is a good idea to run the SHA-1 checksum procedure on it described in the links to info about that update to make sure it is identical to what Apple provides. (This is not necessary if you use the Software Update application to get the file since it automatically does that for you.)
If necessary, you can try again after the update becomes a less popular download the ISP no longer caches, the ISP caches it again for one reason or another, or try another ISP if that is an option for you. Unfortunately, it is not usually possible to choose between a cached copy on a nearby ISP's server & the original at Apple's site since the cacheing is done algorithmically by the ISP's software.

  • Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update Won't Mount

    I recently downloaded the Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update but whenever I try to open it I get this error;
"The following disk images failed to mount:
    MacOSXUpdCombo10.4.10 - Input/Output error"
Now, this might not be a big deal for most people, but I'm on dial up and I REALLY don't feel like re-downloading it since it's such a big file. Is there anyway I can fix it?

So this could be the problem. I burned it on the disc and the disc looks kind of scratched. It says the file is the size it should be so I was wondering if there's anyway around this? Would cleaning the disc fix it? Or is there some program I could use?

As the others say, no, the backup copy won't be deleted immediately, but it will eventually.

I'm trying a full restore in Lion, but it won't. States that there isn't enough space on the Mac HD. How do I restore everything from a recent Time Machine Backup?

Thanks but I think it has something to do with the 'restore'. in the newest iTunes 11, when I click on the tab "iphone", it redirects me to the "welcome to your new iphone" page and asks about doing a 'restore'. I already did a 'restore', but it went to the original factory settings and I want to 'restore' to my lastest back up as of April 12. When I choose that option, it says my iphone doesn't have enough space. I don't know how much I need to delete in order to make it work. I've deleted lots, but it only has 4.1 GB available. I'm not sure why this isn't enough to do a 'restore'. I don't want to delete all my photos and videos, but maybe I will have to?...7.7GB is used up for that. I can't sync or do ANYTHING...

  • Mac OS 10.4. 11 Combo update (PPC) bug?

Installed the update above after software update check. On restart the Imac stops witth a black screen and the fan going at full speed. The "on" light is lit.
I have done the following actions:
    1. started from the installer that came with the computer (Mac s 10.3)
    repaired permissions. repaired disk.
    2. Installed system 10.3 again.Works fine.
trashed many files to make 18 GB free space on the hard disk.
    3. Upgraded to Tiger 10.4. Works fine.
    4. repaired permissons again.
5 . Did another Software update download and install of the Combo update.
    6. Result: black screen, fan going at full, "on " light on.
    Any good advice ?

    Good advice?
There are no guarantees, but following this procedure when installing updates and upgrades on your Mac, or even re-installing them, will go a long way towards avoiding unpleasant after effects and ‘post-update stress disorder’.
It is also worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
    2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
    3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site. If your car runs on gasoline you would not want to fill the tank with diesel, so don’t try to install the PPC updater on an Intel Mac!
The 10.4.11 Combo Updater for PPC Macs is here: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx10411comboupdat eppc.html
And for Intel Macs: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx10411comboupdat eintel.html
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
More information on using Software Updater here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1338
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.4.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.4.10 to 10.4.11. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
    Now proceed as follows:
    4. Close all applications.
    5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
    7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
    8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
    9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them 10.4.10. compliant. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 3.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari. Remember: Tiger up to 10.4.10 used Safari 2.0.4 or, if you downloaded it, Safari 3.0.3 beta. Safari 10.4.11 used Safari 3.0.4 which was not a beta. If Safari 3.1.2 on 10.4.11 is not the fastest browser you have ever used, then something is wrong!
Moreover, trying to revert to Safari 3.0.4 (or worse still, version 2) when running 10.4.11 or 10.5 can have repercussions, as Safari 3.1.1 uses a completely different webkit on which other applications like iChat, Mail and Dashboard Widgets etc also rely, and may entail you having to reinstall an earlier operating system.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party ad-on. Two such add-on that have been frequently mentioned here for causing such problems are Piclens and Pithhelmet. If you have them, trash them.
Additional tips on software installation here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
    • /Library/InputManagers
    • ~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

  • Back up your iCal files before applying the Mac OS X 10.4.4 Update

It seems as though this sort of thing should not happen, but the mere application of the Mac OS X 10.4.4 Update - in small but noticeable ways - damaged my existing calendars, rendered a subscribed calendar effectively unsubscribed, and the Birthdays calendar present but empty. Neither of these calendars were actually removed: they just appeared devoid of data.
Because I had previously backed up the calendars using the Back up Database… option in iCal before applying the update, I simply restored them to fix the issues in the standard calendars.
To fix the subscription problem, I had to unsubscribe, then re-subscribe to that calendar.
To fix the Birthdays calendar issue, I simply had to launch the Address Book, remove a birthday in one record, exit the edit mode, then paste it back in. Instantaneously, the Birthdays calendar was populated with data once again.
Does anyone actually test these updates before they are released? [Facetious question, I know - but one does have to wonder…]
PowerBook G4 12 867 MHz 640 meg 40 gig SuperDrive   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   What problem? I use the The Missing Sync for Palm OS

    You have limited options:
    1. If there is an Apple retailer nearby you can have them copy the update to a CD for you - usually at no or nominal charge.
    2. You can go to a local Mac user group (if there is one in your area) where they would be happy to provide a copy of the update for you on a CD at no or nominal charge.
    3. You can find another Mac user who has a high-speed connection and can download the update for you.
    4. You can call AppleCare and order a copy of the update on CD for a charge of (I think) around $9.95.
    5. You could find a Mac owner somewhere who would copy the update to a CD and mail it to you at any negotiated cost. However, do not solicit this assistance on these forums. Of course anyone reading this post could offer their help.

  • Is the Mac OS X 10.4.11 Software Update still malfunctioning?

So I was downloading 10.4.11 a couple months ago when it came out but when I was restarting my Macbook it stopped at the uploading grey screen with the apple and I ended up having to reinstall all my OS X software discs inorder for my computer to work again. Now the update for 10.4.11 is still in my software updates and I was wondering if they got the bugs worked out and if it's ok for me to try and download it again. I'm worried if I try to download it again the same thing will happen again.

Hi Carolyn, and a warm welcome to the forums!
It's not really a bug, but something not right on your HD, here's the full story on how to avoid those things...
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, or things don't load/run, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.
The combo update for PowerPC-based Macs...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateppc.html
The combo update for Intel-based Macs...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateintel.html
Repair Permissions after re-install, then reboot again.
If all the above do not resolve the problem, then it's time for an Archive & Install, which gives you a new OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space...

  • How do I find the MAC address of a CLIENT ACCESS POINT created from the FILE SERVICES ROLE

I have several Client Access Points created within the clustered File Services Role.  The only way I seem to be able to determine the MAC address of each of these, is by visiting the DHCP server.

  • Deleted iTunes Media off the Mac, Can i now get it to read from my Hard Drive ?

I started looking into this as my Mac was using Roughly 500 of 750 gig on Music. But I've only recently noticed that this is due to duplicates in My Music folder and iTunes Media. Ive done Some reading up and can't seem to find a definitive answer to what to do.
Ive Backed up My Music and iTunes media on a External Hard-drive, My Music folders are all neat and organised and would like it to stay that way, But I've noticed iTunes media folder was a mess, This is My fault as i had the make a copy to iTunes media ticked in preferences. And the other one De-selected ( Keep Music Organised )
So to free up space  on the Mac I'm going to delete iTunes media as this is no use to me the way it is, I can't find anything in there and it looks a mess. The Problem with this is iTunes reads from iTunes media and i would rather it read form my organised Music files on the internal Hard-drive so i can keep ontop of it.
All my Playlists are built within iTunes as i use them in Serato for DJ Purposes , So i would like to keep these playlists and just let iTunes read from the hard drive instead Is there a way once iTunes media is deleted i can highlight a 2014 playlist for example with 250 songs in and change where iTunes looks for them so i don't have to reload all the music? with iTunes media deleted there coming up saying can't Locate File , but i will have to manually show iTunes 25000 where they are manually , Can this be done per Playlist in one big Hit?
Thank you and hope it all made sense

Unfortunately it is not making enough sense for me to try to make real suggestions.
If you are going to disable iTunes media preferences then you have to be 100% organized and know how iTunes works because from that point on iTunes will stop helping you maintain your files in any way.
Yes, it may look a mess but the whole thing is designed so you should never need to look in your iTunes folder yourself, just at the iTunes application window.  Maybe you need to do this to use your Serrato thingy but that's because you're doing something special.
If you add a file to iTunes and have the "copy to" preference set then it will place a copy of what you add in the correct folder inside iTunes Media folder.  The only way you should have media files actually directly in other folders is if you put them there yourself or you have residual structure from pre-iTunes version 9 before media was split into folders of different kinds.
If you disable iTunes media preferences then iTunes is absolutely terrible at following media moved to other drives.  Moving to a different drive is not really moving, it is copying and then deleting the original, and that means iTunes sees the file as being gone.
I really get lost on your fourth paragraph.

  • I am having problems with my Mac Book Pro Retina locking up after updating from Lion to Maverick.  I was having no trouble until I did the upgrade, and now it is locking up, freezing after about 5 minutes, and getting hot.  Any suggestions?

A while back I had an upgrade available to me.  I had Lion when I bought this Pro.  The upgrade is Maverick.  After downloading and installing the upgrade, my computer started freezing while doing anything.  I might not get this completely written before it freezes.  The keyboard is getting hot, and I have to use the power button to turn it off.  After it has sat for at least 10 minutes, I can turn it back on.  I might be able to do some work for 5 minutes, or up to 30 minutes before it freezes again.  Some of my programs are not working, either.
I would appreciate any suggestions anyone might have, or even go back to Lion, if I can figure out how to.
    Thanks.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
