Re: Best Buy Webroot Anti Virus Disables Computer if you DO not PURCHASE

The $300 you quoted is bare minimum charge without parts. Best buy forces you to buy web root as part of their service contact, they charge $80 for data backup (which should be included in cost of contract. Why would they attempt to service any type of device that stores data without backing up that data add a matter of practice?), and if tout data doesn't fit on the 2 disks they allot you (and they don't specify disk size) they then attempt to get you to purchase an external hard drive quoting a price tag of $150 or at bare minimum charge you $25 for a 32g flash drive. That minimum charge is already at $305 without any parts and is what you have to pay up front before they even look at the problem. And every best buy employee can get on here and dispute this until their faces turn blue. I've got documented proof and I'll send a copy to any customer that asks me for it. Being forced to buy WebRoot when you don't need it and don't want it is criminal. I had Norton and didn't want their Webroot crap. They deleted my software and put their garbage on there and then they tell you your warranty is invalid if you take it off. DO NOT USE BEST BUY FOR YOUR SERVICE. THEY MAKE THEIR MONEY ON SERVICE CONTRACTS AND THEIR SERVICE IS DEPLORABLE. IF YOU WANT TO BE CHARGED $300+ FOR THEM TO DO A FACTORY RESET ON YOUR SYSTEM BECAUSE THEY ARE EITHER TOO STUPID OR TOO LAZY TO READ TECH BULLETINS, FORUMS, ETC AND ACTUALLY FIX THE PROBLEM THEN GO AHEAD TO BEST BUY. YOU'LL PAY TO GET YOUR COMPUTER BACK WITH NONE OF THE SOFTWARE THAT CAME PRELOADED ON YOUR SYSTEM NOR ANY OF THE SOFTWARE THAT YOU BOUGHT OUTRIGHT AFTERWARDS. YEAH YOU'LL HAVE YOUR $305 PLUS TAX DATA BACKUP ON A FLASH DRIVE AND THE WEB ROOT THEY FORCE ON YOU BUT THAT'S IT. GOOD LUCK DOING ANYTHING WITH THAT EXPENSIVE DATA BACKUP YOU JUST PURCHASED WITHOUT THE PROGRAMS THAT UTILIZE THE DATA. I WILL NEVER EVER BUY ANYTHING FROM BEST BUY EVEN IF I HAVE TO PAY MORE SOMEWHERE ELSE FOR THE SAME ITEM BECAUSE THEIR SERVICE IS THAT BAD.

Hello MsDeMeanor,
With Geek Squad Tech Support, a customer pre-requisite is that up-to-date antivirus software must installed on the device, per the terms and conditions agreed to upon purchase. That being said, it is my understanding that you should be able to choose the antivirus you prefer, and I’m sorry to hear you may have been left feeling you had no choice other than Webroot.
As for the charges you have mentioned surrounding the data backup, it is true we charge for this as a separate service. Many find it unnecessary as they are able to complete their own data backups. If you do elect to have us back up your data, there may be further charges for large amounts of data to backup. You may check out more info on our data backup or transfer service here. I apologize if you find this service and the respective prices to be unreasonable.
Sadly, I was unable to locate your Geek Squad Tech Support plan to take a further look at this. What seems to be going on with your computer that you need to utilize the plan?
Sincerely,

  • Webroot Anti-Virus/Spysweeper Causing Computer to Freeze

Hey there! I've got a question in regards to anti-virus software.
I've got Webroot Anti-Virus/Spysweeper installed as my anti-virus on my computer (I've got Windows Vista Ultimate as my operating system). I installed  it at the recommendation of the Geek Squad guy at my local Best Buy because McAfee was causing a lot of problems on my computer. Everything with my Webroot was running fine until recently.
I'm not sure what caused the problem, but when I started having problems last Friday when I went to restart my computer. It would get to the log in screen, and I'd log in. Eventually, my desktop would come up, but my computer wouldn't connect to my internet, and eventually would just freeze up. This continued until I essentially couldn't get into my computer. I took my computer to the helpdesk at my school, and one of their tech guys said that he tracked the problem to my Webroot Anti-Virus software. I got my computer back with the Webroot disabled, and sure enough, it ran fine. When I went in through the MSCONFIG and turned the Webroot back on and attempted to start up my computer again, it froze up just like it had before. However, when I disabled it through the MSCONFIG, my computer started up and ran just fine once more. My gut tells me it has something to do with my Windows Defender and Firewall running at start up, but I'm not entirely sure.
What I'm asking is has anyone else had this problem before? If so, were you able to solve it without uninstalling the Webroot? What did you do? I'm asking because I really like the Webroot software, haven't even had it for a year, and I really don't want my money to go to waste. And please, don't tell me to uninstall Webroot and get something different, because right now, I just can't afford to do that.
Thanks to everyone who helps!! It's much appreciated!

Hopefully this site can get you a general idea of whats going on, I have no clue to be honest with you..

  • Best application for anti-virus for macbook pro

Hi I just recently bought a macbook pro and I was wondering what appliction is best for a anti-virus ??

OS X already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it that way with software updates from Apple. Ill-conceived third party "anti-virus" garbage products are the primary reason for Mac instability, crashes and related problems reported on this site.
A much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":
Never install any product that claims to "speed up", "clean up", "optimize", or "accelerate" your Mac. Without exception, they will do the opposite.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources. Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iTunes or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Disable Java in Safari > Preferences > Security.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
Block browser popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > and check "Block popup windows":
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but popups have devolved to become a common means to deliver targeted advertising that you probably do not want.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever see a popup indicating it detected registry errors, that your Mac is infected with some ick, or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. To date, most of these attempts have been pathetic and are easily recognized, but that is likely to change in the future as criminals become more clever.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.

    Hello:
There are NO viruses that affect a Mac running OS X - none.  FWIW, I suggest that you NOT buy A/V software.  It is a waste of both money and computer resources.
Having said that, there are a couple of instances of malware that have popped up.  Just don't follow links from unknown sources.

  • Best malware remover/anti-virus for OS X

I think I downloaded Flash Player Pro (non-Adobe product) virus.  What is the best anti-virus/malware removal tool to use on Yosemite?

What, specifically did you do? Fake Adobe Flash Player update alerts are very common. However, unless you went to the linked page, downloaded the fake update and then opened it, it could not harm you.
If you did open something downloaded from that fake update site, it's unlikely to be malware. If it were malware, Mac OS X would have blocked it if it were known malware, and in this case anti-virus software wouldn't help you either.
It's more likely that this fake update would have been adware, which is not well-detected by Mac OS X or anti-virus software. If you are having symptoms of adware (ads being injected in sites that should not have ads, redirects to a different search engine than the one you usually use, etc), then you should be able to remove it by following the instructions in my Adware Removal Guide.

If it was indeed purchased with a different apple ID then there is no work around for what you want! You can try signing in with your daughter's apple ID and password and update the app and purchase whatever you want then log back in with your apple ID. This may work!

  • The best defence? Anti Virus software sugestions?

Hay just wondering what virus protection software, if any, is the best for macs.

    HI,
    Get ClamXav It's free.
A word to the wise. Do not use Norton or McAfee anti virus software. Will cause numerous problems and next to impossible to UNinstall.
Currently there are no Mac viruses in the wild but to be on the safe side, ClamXav is good to have.

  • What options do I have if Best Buy doesn't honor what they sold you . . .

This is my first time ever to post, but I am at wits end and hoping for help from the community. I have been trying to resolve this issue for 6 months. Here's my situation.
My daugher is on her grandparents Verizon plan. Let's name her line B. I am autherized to purchase on the account. My daugher's phone was lost and she needed another one for security reasons. I called around to the Best Buys that we'd be near while travling and found one close by with the phone she wanted. The representative was excellent. Very very helpful and went the extra mile. He told me all about the edge program and how we were only going to pay an extra $10 a month for 2 years because we'd receive a $25 monthly credit. Then after 2 years we could surender the phone just pay taxes and upgrade the phone. The Best Buy representive called for apporval to make sure he could use a upgrade from line A for my daughter line B and still receive the edge. So he double checked to make sure everything would be seemless. This occured Oct 24, 2014. After the first bill it was all but seemless!!
So in November I went to Best Buy, they sent me to Verizon, I went to Verizon, they sent me to Best Buy, Best Buy sent me to another Verizon and spoke to a supervisor. I was shown the error in Best Buys transaction. Best Buy upgraded line A to the edge but since there was no smartphone attached to line A, we did not recieve the $25 credit. Verizon sent me back to Best Buy and said Best Buy need to honor what they sold me. I went back to Best Buy close to my home. That Best Buy told me only the Best Buy I bought it from could help me. I had to call them because they are 5 hours and 6 minutes from my home. It took a few more calls before I spoke the mobile manager and he was going to investigate. Then it was the holidays and he didn't get back to me. I completely understood,. I called he and he said he hadn't forgotten me. Finally in December he told me he met with Ashley the Verison's Best Buy representive. According to him a Best Buy mobile supervision they would going to credit the account $50 for Novemeber and December. After that point we'd see the $25 edge credit. He said he'd forward me the email. I never recieved the email. I drove the 5 hours and 6 minutes to the store and he was off that day, but left a message for him to call me and please forward the email. No phone call, no forward email. So I called again, he was on vacation and wouldn't be in until after his vacation mid January. I was hopeful, but no credit on the bill in Jan 2105. I spoke to him again after his vacation and he promised to forward the email from Verison. Now it is Feb, still nothing, no email, no credit, no follow-up. I drive back there and had to speak the a store Manger, because the mobile manager has now been promoted to another area and he is off that day. The manager assures me the promoted moblie manager will contact me. But he doesn't. I call the store manger and he has the promoted mobile manager call finally me. The promoted mobile manager asks me for a copy of the bill. Fine, I get it to him. I'll have to fax it or mail it, but I would get it to him. Then the bill comes in with a $50 credit!!! Yay, I think they have it resolved, nope. April bill comes in no $25 edge credit.
I call the new mobile manager, poor soul, he doesn't know the situation. He took my information and meet with Ashley from Verizon. He calls me back, wow, he calls me back!!! I am so thankful. Then he starts talking about Best Buy in the third person! He doesn't know what "they" told me. When I bought the phone "they" put it on line A, then "they" transferred it to line B.  He's referring to his Best Buy representative in the third person. Talking about me buying the phone's contract for $600 plus dollars. I started to see red. So I ended oiur conversation to collect myself and called him back. Poor buy! Next conversation he explains that I need to put a smart phone on line A. I can buy a new one, use an old one, whatever, but line A needs a verison smart phone on it. He doesn't know why the promoted mobile manager didn't tell me this before. But since he didn't I'm out at least $150 that no one is willing to refund me. If I give line A the iPhone from line B, I won't have a phone for line B, unless I have one or buy a new one. He was kind enough to agree this was no fault of my own, but that of the Best Buy representive sold me the first time and the promoted mobile manager for not communicating the situation. So this is Best Buy's solution - grandpa who never wants more than his ancient flip phone has to get my daughers iPhone, my daugher get no phone or I have to buy one, and I'm out at least $150 (or more depending on how long this takes to resolve). I didn't even ask but I am sure the iPhone at some point must be surendered. The store manager is aware of the situation and he will call me tomorrow, or will he????
So, do I just accept that they made a mistake, they can't honor their deal because it is a contract with Verison and I have to pay for it? I feel helpless and frustrated. We're under contract for another 2 years.

    Hello nvtrev,
It can be difficult to keep track of all of your belongings while traveling, and it is discouraging to hear your daughter may have lost her phone during travel. While things certainly seemed to have gone awry, I’m glad to hear that your initial experience purchasing a new phone for your daughter was pleasant.
When our customers come to us for phone purchases, they should trust that we are able to communicate with their carrier’s systems to process a phone purchase seamlessly. It certainly seems that we may have missed something during your upgrade, causing you to miss out on the billing credit and that you’ve put forth a valiant effort to try to find a resolution to this issue.
As I am sadly not equipped to personally take a closer look into this issue, could you please share with me the store location and any first names of managers you have been working with regarding these concerns? With the store location and manager names, I would be delighted to reach out to the store’s leadership to better research this experience to see what options we may have for you.
I look forward to your correspondence!
    Sincerely,

  • Best Buy shouldn't be allowed steelbooks, as you guys haven't the foggiest idea what you are doing.

I swear everytime I try and go to get a steelbook from Best Buy it makes me hate Best Buy ever so much and never ever ever want to shop there because of how bad you handle this and have no idea what you are doing.
Wanted to preorder Ghost Rider and get the free steelbook but guess what they never even got them in and I checked everyday for a week after being told they were in transit on a Monday and by Wednesday was told they had been deleted by the system.  Well one good thing came out of that now I don't even have to bother buying the movie at your store.
Wanted to get the Warner Brothers line of steelbooks that you just came out but guess what just like Ghost Riders none have showed up and everytime I ask I get well 12 our on order for that title and that title and that title.
OH BUT THEY DID SET UP THE DISPLAY THAT SAYS COLLECTIBLE STEELBOOK AND JUST GRABBED AMRAY VERSIONS OFF THE SHELF BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO FRAKING CLUE WHAT THEY ARE DOING, THIS DISPLAY MAKES YOUR STORE LOOK LIKE A BUNCH OF COMPLETE MORONS AND CLUELESS AND THEY WONDER WHY BEST BUY IS CLOSING STORES ITS BECAUSE THEY ARE RAN BY IDIOTS WHO COULD CARE LESS ABOUT THEIR CUSTOMERS.

Aren't those Steelbooks officially out till like June 6th or something? And I worked in retail before. This may sound dumb, but sometimes they still want you to set up displays even before the items are received. You can't be mad cause they follow direction. They might of been told to fill in the space with items to look full. Honestly you're being upset for no good reason. Yeah, it sucks that you aren't seeing the items you want in stores. These are promo items so not every store will get it. Unless it's advertised in the ad, then you should be upset. If no store has any, order them online. From what I've seen, these extras are usually offered online too.sirdizzy wrote:
Really Best Buy can't take any culibility or credit for what goes on in their stores because they outsource it to another company rather they just make themself look like babooms by having something clearly labeled wrong and misleading on their floor.
Why put out a display that is clearly wrong and misleading, why when its pointed out to you by a customer does that same display remain on the floor (I took that picture yesterday not today and I informed an employee yesterday not today but it was still there today).
