Re: Bloated clients (was: pattern for persistancemanagement)

Geoff,
From what I've understood of Forte's partitioning behaviour, the only way to get rid of b, c, d and e Projects from the client partition is by
deploying them as a shared library and having the Client dynamically
load them at run-time. Any other way, including creating a complex
structure of interfaces to avoid the client referencing the other
projects directly, or even deploying the Server projects as another
Application, will not prevent these projects from being included in the
Client Partition.
The problem I guess is that when we think along the lines of components
we immediately associate them with Service Objects. Clearly, it's the
Project and not the SO which can be classified as a component in Forte.
The questions I have is : Now that we know how Forte's Partioning
mechanism works, would it significantly impact the way we partition our
Apps ? I'm not so sure.

This topic is of keen interest to me as well. At my customer's
urging, I wrote a little test application spread across
four or five projects, each supplying the next..
a << b << c << d << e
The projects b,c,d, and e each contain a class and a service
object based on that class. I partitioned it (a client
partition and four server partitions for b c d e) and made
a distribution. Then I looked at the client partition
and discovered b c d e were projects for it!
If you code-generate this and run fcompile, you will see
that all the code for all the projects in the entire chain
of supplier projects winds up in the client partition.
To be clear about this, if project e contains a class X,
you will see the source code for X.init and all other
X methods in the client partition.
This appears to be the default behavior, and the open
question is how to change the default behavior, if that
can be done.
All my best,
Geoff
P.S. If e uses GenericDBMS as a supplier, it will show up
in the client too. Of course!
This is at least my understanding as of today.

  • Design patterns for updating a fact table

I have a fact table and about 10 dimensions.
One of these dimensions can be missing values, so the fact table row will link to an UNKNOWN value.
When the correct value is finally entered in the dimension table i want to update any associated fact rows.
Whats the most efficient way of doing this?

I know i have to use a lookup transformation ;-)
I wouldnt be at teh stage of even having a fact table if i didnt know that! I was looking for a design pattern, not the name of a shape!
The solution i went with was to take a hard line on any rows with unknown values. If when importing the data there are unknown values for two of the most important dimensions, those rows are not inserted into the fact table, but instead pushed to an ErrorLog
    table.
Users run a report that shows what this table contains and if they really want those rows, they insert the correct dimension values and rerun the import, which will only import any rows not already in the fact table.
    This way:
    1. all sorting & filtering issues are resolved as there will be no unknown rows for the most important dimensions used in sorting and filtering.
    2. we can quickly see any rows with unknown values and figure out whats wrong. its always missing reference data that the client didnt think to give us. a quick insert of the dimension data and import and the rows get imported.
    thanks for the replies.

  • Flex design pattern for BlazeDS transfer objects

    Dear Community,
I have a question regarding the nature of objects transferd from BlazeDS backend to the Flex client.
According to some adobe docs all the presentation logic should be in flex and BlazeDS should provide only services.
The question is what kind of transfer objects should be used? with what level of abstraction?
To make it more clear let's talk about a simple forum application like adobe forums.
I have created a Forum service, which returns a Forum transfer object, which has a List of Threads, with each thread having a List of Messages.
Flex gets the Forum transfer object and does all the presentaiton work.
This is a very nice seperatin of concerns architecture BUT there are two major performance issues:
    - when the forum becomes bigger the transfer object will be huge
    - the flex will use huge client resources to create the presentation of the forum transfer object.
So my question is what is your strategy/ design pattern for such a problem.
An obvious answer would be create services that include the presentation logic and use transfor objects like ThreadListPage which will include only the first 10 threads.
    Thanks in advance

I think you are going to get a few varied types of answers to a general question like this, but I will comment on a few things.  First, you should only be transmitting the data that you need to use or display to the user at the time.  If this forum was implemented in Flex (I wish) you wouldn't transfer the text for all the threads.  You might not transfer the thread text at all (just the subjects), you'd make calls back to the server to fetch that data when and if you need it.
Also, I think you are overestimating the resources required for the Flex "presentation layer".  If you think about it, these workstations we have here are pretty idle most of the time when you're at a website.  Nowadays there's plenty of processing power just sitting there waiting, so as long as your design isn't flawed the CPU or memory are rarely going to be a bottleneck with Flex.
The way I design, BlazeDS (or GraniteDS etc) should mostly just be "serving data".  There is some flexibility available, for example I don't see a problem with putting certain types of business rules (such as a limit on the number of results that can be recieved in a search) within server side code, and validation rules on the Flex side.  So there's not too many "industry standards" in Flex yet beyond maybe what's done in the various standard architectures, at least not that I'm aware of.
You might find it beneficial to look into some of the various frameworks/architectures available like Cairngorm, Mate, Swiz, and so on.  Learning how they work (looking at examples) would probably answer some of your questions too.

  • What is the best design pattern for this problem?

No code to go with the question. I am trying to settle on the best design pattern for the problem before I code. I want to use an Object Oriented approach.
I have included a basic UML diagram of what I was thinking so far.
Stated simply, I have three devices; Module, Wired Modem, and Wireless Modem.
In the Device Under Test parent class, I have put the attributes that are variable from device to device, but common to all of them.
In the child classes, I have put the attributes that are not variable to each copy of that device. The attributes are common across device types. I was planning to use controls in the class definition that have the data set to a default value, since it doesn't change for each serial number of that device. For example, a Module will always have a Device Type ID of 1. These values are used to query the database.
    An example query would be [DHR].[GetDeviceActiveVersions] '39288', 1, '4/26/2012 12:18:52 PM'
The '1' is the device type ID, the 39288 is the serial number, and the return would be "A000" or "S002", for example.
So, I would be pulling the Serial Number and Device Type ID from the Device Under Test parent and child, and passing them to the Database using a SQL string stored in the control of the Active Versions child class of Database.
The overall idea is that the same data is used to send multiple queries to the database and receiving back various data that I then evaluate for pass of fail, and for date order.
What I can't settle on is the approach. Should it be a Strategy pattern, A Chain of Command pattern, a Decorator pattern or something else.
    Ideas?

You may want to look at this thread in the BreakPoint where i trie to help Cory get a handle on Dynamic Dispatching with an example of two classes that inherit from a common parent and invoke Over-ride VIs to do the same thing but with wildly varying results.
The example uses a Class of "Numeric"  and a sibling class "Text" and the both implement an Add method.
It is dirt simple and Cory did a decent job of explaining it.

    Hi,
Well there were errors in how stop works:
"Stopping a thread with Thread.stop causes it to
unlock all of the monitors that it has locked (as a
natural consequence of the unchecked ThreadDeath
exception propagating up the stack). If any of the
objects previously protected by these monitors were in
an inconsistent state, the damaged objects become
visible to other threads, potentially resulting in
    arbitrary behavior. "
I do understand that you want to have something like
    killTheTreadIDontCareAboutConcequences-method, but
it's better to let all your methods that you want to
be able to terminate take a timeout argument, and deal
with the termination in the method. (Close the
sockets/streams etc that you are blocking on).
/KajThe point is, it is not always possible to make those blocking methods stop, via some magic "timeout" thingamabob. The bottom line is still that the blocking methods were written incorrectly to begin with (to possibly block indefinitely), so one cannot come up with an across-the-board solution, other than getting the root cause fixed in the first place. However, one is not always in control of fixing the root cause.

We are using the default E-mail pattern on the Configtool.
Is there any way to stop the self registration process if the user enter wrong E-mail pattern?

    Solution:
The error might occur due to following cases.
case 1: when the password is wrong
case 2: when you try to login from some App
case 3: when you try to login from the domain other than your time zone/domain/computer (This
is the case in most of scenarios when sending mail from code)
There is a solution for each
solution for case 1: Enter the correct password.
Recomended: solution for case 2: go to
security settings at the following link https://www.google.com/settings/security/lesssecureapps and
enable less secure apps . So that you will be able to login from all apps.
solution 1 for case 3: (This might be helpful) you need to review the activity. but reviewing the activity will not be helpful due to latest security
standards the link will not be useful. So try the below case.
solution 2 for case 3: If you have hosted your code somewhere on production server and if you have access to the production server, than take remote
desktop connection to the production server and try to login once from the browser of the production server. This will add exception for login to google and you will be allowed to login from code.
But what if you don't have access to the production server. try
    the solution 3
solution 3 for case 3: You have to enable
login from other timezone / ip for your google account.

  • Remote Server returned '530 5.7.1 Client was not authenticated'

    Hello,
I migrating from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2013.
The Exchange 2007 infrastructure look like:
    -2 CAS ( Hub1 and Hub2)
    -2 MBX ( mbx1 and mbx2)
We add Exchange 2013 in the mix
    2 CAS ( CAS-2K13-1 and CAS-2K13-2)
    2 MBX ( MBX-2K13-1 and MBX-2K13-2)
All mailbox are curently on Exchange 2007. All inbound email pass by a SMTP Relay who forward the email to a NLB of Exchange 2013.
The send connector (internet) forward email to the SMTP relay, and the source server are only 2K7 server.
My problems is : if I replace the two 2K7 server from the source server for the 2K13 MBX, I receive this message:
The following organization refuse your message: MBX-2K13-1.contoso.com
    Generation server :  MBX-2K13-2.contoso.com
    [email protected]
    MBX-2K13-1.contoso.com
Remote Server returned '530 5.7.1 Client was not authenticated'
    idea?

Do you smarthost from the send connector to another SMTP gateway?

  • 530 5.7.1 client was not authenticated

OK, I am not in control of an exchange server.  My company uses GoDaddy for our exchange server.  I am an employee.  We use a software for contact management.  When I try to send emails to say a group of customers, it gives me the error
530 5.7.1 client was not authenticated.  I have talked to GoDaddy until I am blue in the face to no avail.  Everything I find says it is something on their end.  By the way, we just switched to them, we have absolutely no problem with our previous
company that we had exchange with.  ANY help would be appreciated.  OF course our outlook works.
The only information our software (called RPMS) requires is the SMTP server  which I enter   smtp.ex3.secureserver.net
    my email address      (*****@alliedsm.com
user name which they say is the same as email address  (*****@alliedsm.com) and password. My old exchange service had me use port 27, but new company says I have to use 587.

In the outbound smtp setting did you set outgoing smtp requires authentication?
    Microsoft Outlook® 2007 (PC)
From the Tools menu, select "Account Settings"
Select your Network Solutions Email account and click the "Change" button above..
Click the "More Settings" button in the bottom-right corner of the E-Mail Accounts window.
In the Internet Email Settings window, click the "Outgoing Server" tab. Ensure that the box next to "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication" is checked and "use same settings as my incoming mail server" is selected.
Click the "Advanced" tab and make sure that "Use the following type of encrypted connection" is set to "None" for the incoming (POP3) and the outgoing (SMTP) port settings. Change the outgoing server port to 587.

  • 530 5.7.1 Client was not authenticated - Exchange 2013 to external domains

    Hi all,
I have an Exchange server 2013 on windows 2012 R2 and do all the configuration for sending and receiving the mail according to the document provided by Microsoft.
But whenever I am trying to send mails from external domains to my exchange server domain I got the following error:
530 5.7.1 Client was not authenticated
Same thing I am getting If I am sending mail through outlook from my Exchange domains to external domain.
But if I am selecting the

SO can anyone please suggest some solutions to resolve this as using Anonymous users fro sending and receiving mails is not secure.

I have a java code for sending mails using the SMTP address of the servers. For sending a mail it required a valid user name and password. For all other SMTP servers if I have used invalid user name and password then I am getting the  530
5.7.1 Client was not authenticated error, but
if I am using my SMTP address and invalid user name and password then also I am able to send the mails.
So I just want to know what I have to configure in the exchange 2013 server so that it will validate the user name and password.
    Regards
    Pankaj Raman.
    Hi Pankaj,
    Thank you for your question.
Was invalid user name and password included in Java code?
    Did outlook send emails?
If this issue happen on Java code instead of outlook?
In fact, Exchange server didn’t validate user account and password, user account and password will be validated on domain controller,
I suggest we create a new dedicated receive connector and enable “anonymous” permission for java code
If there are any questions regarding this issue, please be free to let me know.
    Best Regard,
    Jim

    Thanks for all,

    HAG,
you need to create a session object passing a valid authenticator. In other words,
    MyAuthenticator auth = new MyAuthenticator ();
Session session = Session.getInstance(props, auth);where MyAuthenticator is something like
    public class MyAuthenticator extends Authenticator{
      public PasswordAuthentication getPasswordAutentication(){
        return new PasswordAuthentication( "user", "password");
}You obviously need to replace username and password with data valid for your e-mail account.
    Hope this helps,
    gulfi

The server probably wants you to use the STARTTLS command before you authenticate.
See the com.sun.mail.smtp package javadocs for the property to set to enable that.
