Re (captions): How are sidecar files implemented?

Hi,
I'm a beginner and am trying to understand how sidecar files work. A scenario follows.
(To cut to the chase, jump to Exporting tests, #2)
Precondition
Premiere Pro CC is open with a short video on the timeline (i.e., Sequence 01).
Preliminary steps
I created and imported a .scc file
Added the .scc file to the timeline
Enabled Closed Captioning Display
Opened up the Captions panel and tweaked the timing a bit
Saved the project
Exporting tests
I exported the video using the QuickTime format, with the Export Options set to embed in Output file. The captions appeared inside the QuickTime player after I activated the menu options. So, that seems straightforward.
I exported the video using the H.264 format with Export Options set to Create Sidecar File. For output, I get two files: Sequence01.mp4 and Sequence01.mp4.scc.
Here's where I'm stuck, conceptually. What comes next? If you open the MP4 file, the sidecar file doesn't seem to be getting picked up or read.
Thank you for your help,
-bruce.

Well, at one point, SCC files were used in submission of TV and Film content to the iTunes store.  I don't know if this is still current or not. Likewise, submission for PS3 and Youtube could also take SCC files at one point.
For the other formats, sometimes they're sent alongside the video to some other downstream processing where they may take the sidecar format and mux the data into some other format for playback over the web.  For example, I believe some of Adobe's web player infrastructure supports reading CEA-608 and CEA-708 captions embedded within H.264 streams.  The desktop video products don't currently embed captions within H.264 frames, and so sometimes other solutions can come in to bridge that gap.
Or, on someone's website, using a custom player they've built (most broadcasters build their own such that they have control over desktop and mobile and rights management and such) have code to grab a specific SMPTE-TT file that will render the captioning data in synchronization over the video during playback.  Same for EBU-TT if you're more EBU.
With the captioning sidecars, it doesn't work like QT references.  The video file has no knowledge of the captioning file.  So if you want to QC them after export, simply open both of them (video and sidecar) individually.

  • How are wft files stored

    Hi All,
I have certain doubts about how workflow definitions files(wft) are stored in database
    1. At which location wft files are stored in server.
    2. using workflow builder we can specify the "effective" date and open wft file effective on that date. How it is achieved.
    Edited by: user13481649 on Aug 12, 2011 1:51 AM

Suppose I make some changes to wft file on 12-aug-2010,
if I put any date before 12-aug-2010 on effective in workflow builder i dont see the changes.
How this is achieved? Why you need to do that? Any specific reason?
,one way would be system storing different wft files as per some subversion standards?
But I am not seeing such a thing in directory mentioned by you.
    $ cd $APPL_TOP
$ find . -name *.wftThe above will return all workflow files you have under $APPL_TOP for all modules.
    Thanks,

  • How are chapter markers implemented within QT?

Imagine a folder on a USB stick full of files – some may be stills, some videos. I want to be able to play them in sequence at the press of a button, just like an old-fashioned slide show.
Keynote seems to be a possibility, but before I buy Keynote I would have to download and upgrade to Mavericks. So I want to be fairly certain before I take this major step, that Keynote and QT can do everything I want.
I have posted a similar query in the Keynote forum (https://discussions.apple.com/message/26056146?ac_cid=op123456#26056146), but here I want to focus on the QT aspect.
    My Slide Show
Imagine a simple sequence in Keynote, 5 seconds per slide, 2-second dissolve, set to Manual advance (meaning the slide show only advances at the press of a button). The sequence is:
    Still A
    Video
    Still B
My slide show would consist of:
Still A comes on screen and stops
I press the button and Still A dissolves into Video and plays. Video freeze-frames at end.
I press the button and the freeze-frame dissolves into Still B and stops.
    QT Timeline
When exported from Keynote to QT, I assume the QT timeline would look something like this:
    Still A
Two seconds of dissolve between Still A and the video.
    Video
Still of last frame of video
Two seconds of dissolve between last frame of video and Still B
    Still B
I can't work out how QT could control the navigation. What I would like to know is how chapter markers work. Are there a variety of markers? Or just one that a user can jump to, and from that point play is automatic? Is there a marker that stops play? I've tried googling, but no luck. A link to details about QT markers and how I can control them would be most appreciated.
    Ques
Is my slide show possible in QT?

I'm in the same boat. I want a standalone presentation that doesn't require a native application such as Keynote or PowerPoint and that is not system dependant (ie, it works on mac windoze and linux).
In the old days (pre mavericks) Quicktime 7 did this no problem but since the most recent version of QT, this ability has been stripped from the program (as far as I can tell..)  Why would Keynote export to QT, when the main feature in QT that enables clickable presentations is gone, is a mystery.
An alternative is to download version 7 of QTplayer if you are only presenting on your mac. I don't know if the Windows versions of QT have retained the click/chapter headings function or not.
I would like to know if it is possible to enalbe this in the current version of QT or if there is an alternative player that will allow this function?

  • How are Static File mime types determined?

How does APEX determine the mime type for imported static files?
We have a number of javascript files in our application, some of which are listed on the Static Files page as "text/html" and some are "text/plain". But some are imported as "application/octet-stream" which prevents them from being edited within APEX.
All of these files contain plain text javascript functions.
File sizes range from 539 bytes to 21251 bytes
We tried changing the extensions from ".js" to ".jscript" and reimported them. They were all given a mime type of "text/plain". But one file was misnamed with the extension ".jsript", so we deleted it, changed the extension to ".jscript" and re-imported it. It was imported as "application/octet-stream" even though it was exactly the same file just renamed!
    What's going on?

I am trying to use a rather older programming language called Mozart, an extension of OZ. I installed it as a binary, but instead of storing its component binaries in a place like /usr/local/oz/bin/. they are all enclosed inside the /Applications/Mozart.app/Contents/Resources/bin/. which cannot be opened nor can a soft link be made to it located outside the Mozart.app wrapper.
The only alternative is to try to edit the mimeTypes.rdf files, and give it the full path name to the inside of Mozart.app were the program used for web applications is stored. It is stored in ~/Library/Application Support/Mozart/, which can only be accessed in more recent Mac OS X by going to finder and holding the Option key while opening the Go menu; this will make the ~/Library visible and accessible.

  • How are the files in the *hidden*Library Message Attachments folder organized?

In the Messages folder in the hidden Library folder (While in Finder, hold down the Alt (Option) key and click on Go in the menu), there is a file called Attachments. I don't understand how the MacBook organizes the photo/videos that has been sent and recieved via iMessage.
The media files are randomly jumbled all over the place and not organized by the date that the media files were sent/recieved. The files are sorted by Date Added. Each file within the files of the 4th column look like those in the following columns.
I want to know how the images are organized and how to see them all chronologically!
    Thank you

  • How are there files, on my USB drive, that show up on a PC but not on my macbook?

I have a usb drive containing several files.  When I insert it into a pc, all the files are displayed.  When I insert it into my macbook, only some of the files are there.  Why is this?  How can I set it so that all files are visible?  I want to delete files.  But, I can't delete files that I can't see.

Yeah, it piosses me to no end too. And haven't been able to disable indexing and general crap-filling of FAT32/ExFAT volumes by the OS. So, I use the following shellscript on Terrminal to purge the stuff before ejecting the stick:
    #!/bin/bash
    if [ `pwd` == $HOME ]
      then echo "Invalid directory: $HOME"; exit;
    fi
    echo "Cleaning `pwd`..."
    rm -rf .[a-z]*
    rm -rf ._*
    rm -rf .[A-Z]*
Since each USB stick may have a different name, I have to manually CD to the appropriate directory inside /Volumes before running it. And it has protective code to protect my azz if I accidentally run it on my home directory and attempt to shoot myself in the foot.

  • When backing up your iTunes music, how are the files saved?

I am planning to upgrade from 10.3 to 10.4 and don't want to lose all of my music. From what I can tell I have 2 options I can either use a CD (my ibook does not have a DVD-RW, but a DVD) or an external drive. My library size including the podcasts total 6.4GB. Should I just use the external drive or just back them up on CD's?

    Hi Anthony.
Just to confirm and elaborate a bit on what Diane has already said...
I just backed up my iTunes Library on disk recently (I don't have an external drive yet) and it took quite some time. I had about half of what you've got and I used 15 disks. Not to mention, I guess they will do in a pinch but I've been told that the quality just doesn't make the transition very well.

  • How do I force lightroom to (re)load an XMP sidecar file?

    Good morning from Boston!
I am new to Lightroom and just finished importing my Aperture library into Lightroom 5 on a Mac. For that, I followed the instructions on Adobe's landing page and Lightroom solutions. For those not familiar with the instructions, you essentially export all your originals with an XMP sidecar file and then export all the adjusted/edited files as 16-bit TIFFs. Then you add them all back into Lightroom and get everything back into Catalogs, Labels, Ratings, and such by using keywords that were added while in Aperture. It took forever, but worked pretty well overall. I had about <1% fewer images in LR5 than in Aperture, which were likely suspected duplicates. So far, so good.
Here's is my problem. My keywords didn't always transfer over (the Keywording panel is empty). I did search forums and plug-ins, but seem to only find issues related to EXIF and GPS data. I also used "Metadata:Read Metadata from File" and "Metadata:Update DNG Preview & Metadata," which didn't do anything. I am suspecting that "Read from File" means "read from the image file itself but not from the sidecar file." Take file IMG_5888 as an example. This particular one was taken as RAW (.CR2) + JPEG on a Canon Rebel XS, but I am having the same issue with RAW only on my Canon EOS 6D. Same goes for JPG + XMP. Puzzling thing is that other files loaded just fine.
In the directory/folder where the file is, it looks like this:
    IMG_5887.CR2
    IMG_5887.JPG
    IMG_5887.XMP
    IMG_5887.dng
    IMG_5888-2.JPG
    IMG_5888.CR2
    IMG_5888.JPG
    IMG_5888.XMP
    IMG_5888.dng
    IMG_5889-2.JPG
    IMG_5889.CR2
    IMG_5889.JPG
    IMG_5889.XMP
    IMG_5889.dng
The .dng were generated by Llightroom. Now, the sidecar files typically have something like so in them (I cut out some keywords for clarity—you get the idea):
    <rdf:Description rdf:about='' xmlns:photoshop='http://ns.adobe.com/photoshop/1.0/'>
    </rdf:Description>
    <rdf:Description rdf:about='' xmlns:dc='http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/'>
      <dc:subject><rdf:Bag>
      <rdf:li>Black Head Trail</rdf:li>
      <rdf:li>Cliffs</rdf:li>
      <rdf:li>Maine</rdf:li>
      <rdf:li>Monhegan</rdf:li>
      <rdf:li>RAW</rdf:li>
      <rdf:li>Sunrises</rdf:li>
      <rdf:li>United States</rdf:li>
      <rdf:li>Waves</rdf:li>
      </rdf:Bag></dc:subject>
    </rdf:Description>
So, the keywords were exported from Aperture, but for some reason, Lightroom isn't always loading them from the XMP file.
On a related note, the keyword hierarchy that was exported as text file from Aperture and imported into LR5 worked well. Everything appears to be there and in its place.
Any ideas for a Lightroom rookie as to how I can get LR5 to read those XMPs? Over 20,000 didn't tag, so I would rather not do this by hand!
    Many thanks in advance,
    Paul

John, what a pleasure. Well, here is the update. First, copying over 300GB of pictures to a drive and then backing up said drive takes a bloody long time. But here is what happened, for others who might run into the same issue.
I first tried a small set of files to narrow down whether the issue was the Aperture export or the Lightroom import.
Conclusion: the "issue" is mostly on the Lightroom side.
What I found: Although Aperture will export an XMP sidecar for a JPEG, Lightroom will not read it, ignoring all keywords. I exported a set of JPEGs only and then opened the XMPs with an editor (well, the UNIX cat command, to be exact). The information was there, keywords and all. However, LR appeared to ignore XMP for JPEG. That said, if you have a RAW+JPEG in Aperture, the RAW XMP sidecar will overwrite the JPEG one, effectively leaving you with only the keywords for the RAW version. That shouldn't be an issue for most, but just in case you have different keywords for your RAW and JPEG images, be aware of this.
    What I did:
Back up all the images and catalogs/libraries from Aperture and LR.
    Make sure #1 worked out.
Make sure #1 worked out (not a typo; you really need a backup, as you will find out below).
Delete the old JPEG files that were uploaded into LR. I had them in a From Aperture folder, as instructed by John's article and Adobe's landing page (referenced in John's article), so I deleted all JPEGs in that folder. My Aperture database was not affected and in fact resides on a different drive.
Run find . -iname "*.JPEG" -delete   [if you do not know how 'find' works, ask someone, as this can potentially delete every single file accessible to your computer!]
Run find . -iname "*.JPG" -delete    [ditto! Don't tell me I didn't warn you!]This is why you need to backup everything. I was deleting copies/exports of the originals in Aperture (again, read John's article for the difference) and still had the originals in Aperture, on a different drive.
[I didn't worry about the unmatched/orphaned XMP files for the JPEGs only; they are tiny and don't hurt.]
In LR, select 'Library:Find All Missing Photos.' If asked, remove them from the Catalog only.
Create a Smart Album in Aperture and include only 'Filetype is JPG.'
Select all images in that album.
Export those original images per Adobe's landing instructions, but for this set of images, select 'Include IPTC' instead of creating a sidecar file.
When Aperture is done, open LR and Add the whole 'From Aperture' folder back to LR (make sure 'Ignore suspected duplicates' is selected.
John, as you rightfully pointed out, this is tricky. If my experience is any indicator, I would suggest migrating in 3 steps:
Export all RAW originals with IPTC in XMP sidecar files.
Export all non-RAW originals (which I would guess are mostly JPEGs) with IPTC included. (not a sidecar)
Export all versions as 16-bit TIFF.
If #2 is added, then the process is actually most straightforward. Steps 1–5 in the first block above were to clean up the mess that I had created and should not happen otherwise (famous last word...)
If the above is unclear, please let me know and I will expand on it. If I had the issue, I suspect others will as well.
Thank you for your help and suggestions. I am officially migrated to LR and up and running!
    Cheers from Boston,
    Paul

  • How to save metadatas in RAW files (and not in external .XMP sidecar file)

    Hello,
I would like to save metadatas (for example keywords) inside the RAW files, and not in external .XMP sidecar file.
How to do this in Lightroom ?
    Thanks
    Josh
PS: is XMP a file format (= .XMP files) or a metadata format that can be embedded either in a .XMP sidecar file or in the RAW itself ?

    MarvinFoster wrote:
It's a horridly named catalog setting since if you are using DNG you don't have XMP files but it does the same thing, it updates the dng with the catalog settings.
XMP does not mean XMP FILES per se.
XMP is a metadata format/standard. so it´s not horrible named but simply missunderstood.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extensible_Metadata_Platform
XMP can be used in several file formats such as PDF, JPEG, JPEG 2000, JPEG XR, GIF, PNG, HTML, TIFF, Adobe Illustrator, PSD, MP3, MP4, Audio Video Interleave, WAV, RF64, Audio Interchange File Format, PostScript, Encapsulated PostScript, and proposed for DjVu. In a typical edited JPEG file, XMP information is typically included alongside Exif and IPTC Information Interchange Model data.

  • How can I generate XMP sidecar files?

    Hello,
Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.
I am trying to figure out how to generate XMP sidecar files for my DNG RAW files in Adobe Bridge. How do I do this? The reason why I ask is because my instructor is really getting on my case because I'm not able to generate the XMP files.
Love is the Law, Love under Will.
    Most sincerely,
    Jessica Sideways

Might do a little research as either you are phrasing the question wrong, you misunderstood the instructor, or instructor does not know what he is talking about.
Here is a link from other authors from Lighroom that also backs up what I said - To avoid sidecar files, consider converting your raw files to DNG. Metadata is written to these files in XMP format, but within the DNG..

You can use Adobe's free DNG converter to convert proprietary raws to the universal DNG raw format. Here are the links:
Adobe - Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter : For Windows : Adobe DNG Converter 9.0
Adobe - Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter : For Macintosh : Adobe DNG Converter 9.0
Converting to JPEG will be an extra step afterwards.

How can I get my books that I download from the Library that are WMA files into my I tunes so I can listen to them. They have a ton of books but I can only listen to them from my windows media player and I wouldlove to download to my I pod but I have tried everything I can think of it they won't go over.  Someone said all I had to do was copy them over and they would convert but I can't even get them to copy.  Thanks.

Well it started happening AGAIN with my 2nd IPod. No matter what I did, it Itunes would NOT restore it!
I finally installed Itunes on my hubby's PC at work and managed to get it restored there.
Apparently, there must be some sort of compatibility issue with the windows version of Itunes and some other piece of software on my pc.
And one more important thing! I had to follow the instructions in the other thread that talks about how to correctly uninstall itunes and quicktime, in order to completely eliminate ALL traces of my "first" ipod's existence so it wouldn't demand that I restore it.
I think the software got "confused" and thought when I connected my 2nd ipod, that it was the 1st and that it still needed to be restored.
Basically, this is just POORLY written and POORLY tested software!

I recently thought I was updating my Safari browser. When completed, I put all those little files that were on the desktop into the trash. Now my trash is saying it can't be emptied because there are locked files and I don't know how to unlock them or get them out of my trash and they keep multiplying. And to make matters worse, I tried renaming them as pdf files thinking that might do the trick.

oh boy ! I'd ask you if you knew what kind of files they were or where they came from, but I don't think you could help me a bunch. Try going to the Utilities folder and running Disk Utilities.  If you want to empty the Trash and it won't empty, go to the finder and choose "secure Empty trash". Worse case scenario-you may have to reinstall Snow Leopard, but I don't know what else to suggest. If you have a DVD of Snow Leopard, boot up from that,  and reinstall the OS. This will not touch the stuff you have on your Hard Drive, then you can update from 10.6 to 10.6.8, otherwise Onyx? Maybe those files are part of the OS which needs them to keep running.  if you hold down the Shift key on reboot, you can reboot in Safe mode and maybe you can take the files out of the trash that way
    good luck
