How to save metadatas in RAW files (and not in external .XMP sidecar file)
Hello,
I would like to save metadatas (for example keywords) inside the RAW files, and not in external .XMP sidecar file.
How to do this in Lightroom ?

PS: is XMP a file format (= .XMP files) or a metadata format that can be embedded either in a .XMP sidecar file or in the RAW itself ?

XMP is a metadata format/standard. so it´s not horrible named but simply missunderstood.

XMP can be used in several file formats such as PDF, JPEG, JPEG 2000, JPEG XR, GIF, PNG, HTML, TIFF, Adobe Illustrator, PSD, MP3, MP4, Audio Video Interleave, WAV, RF64, Audio Interchange File Format, PostScript, Encapsulated PostScript, and proposed for DjVu. In a typical edited JPEG file, XMP information is typically included alongside Exif and IPTC Information Interchange Model data.

I am coding a utility to convert my existing collection to LR, and I am wondering:
1) If LR can read XMP sidecar files for images even if the image can internally contain XMP data, e.g. JPG files?
2) If LR can export XMP data to a sidecar file even if the image can internally contain XMP data, e.g. JPG files?

P.the sad part is that if your .jpg are read only (the files only), Lightroom will NOT export the XMP metadata. It would be nice is Lightroom exported XMP sidecar. Better, it would be nice to tell Lightroom to do it every time, like beta 4 was doing (if I'm not mistaken).

I have all my songs (60 000) on a remote drive. The drive is wireless networked. I installed a new router and had to map the drive again. Once this was done itunes could no longer locate the music. My music is not sitting in my media file but is rather referenced to the location of the music. Now that the location has changed due to the remapped drive how can I link the itunes library to the songs (media)again.
I have read many help comments and forums but so far nothing specific about relinking once the songs have already been moved and are referenced songs.
A step by step procedure would be helpful.

iTunes remembers the location of each file in the database. If you right-click on a missing file, click Get Info, cancel when it asks you to try to find it, then look on the summary tab it will show you the last known location in the form file://localhost/<some path>. If you put the files back where they are expected to be, close iTunes and reopen, then iTunes will find them again. If not my script can attempt the task. When the script asks for a media folder you should respond with Z:\ since that seems to be where the artist folders are located.

Some online storage systems such as Google Drive show Keynote as a folder.
We use Dropbox to distribute all our file types and Keynote does not have an issue using that. -
How to save metadata in .xmp also for .jpgs?
In LR 2.5, I have selected "save the metadata in .xmp files" in the Catalog Settings, and I have NOT selected "include develop settings inside jpeg, tiff, ... I notice however that the metadata is saved in .xmp files only for photos in RAW format (which for me is .ORF, the Olympus RAW format).
In jpegs, the metadata seems to be saved in the jpeg. This is not ideal in my situation, because when I back up photos using rsync (or the time machine), all jpegs where I have modified metadata will be backed up again, causing a lot of data to be backed up, when a tiny .xmp would in fact be enough. Is there a way to ensure that the jpegs per se are not touched, and all information is stored in sidecar .xmp files?
Second question: if I select "store all metadata in xmp", when is this stored? Whenever I make a change? Or do I have to explicitly select the command "save metadata" for a folder?

Luca.A reason RAWs are the only ones with XMP sidecars and JPGs don't, besides the fact it is easy to save metadata in JPGs compared to RAWs, is that when a camera shoots RAW + JPG both files have the same name except for the extension and so when an XMP with the same name except for the extension exists, it wouldn't be clear whether its metadata was for the RAW or for the JPG.
I am on a PC, so am not sure how TimeMachine works, but a well-done backup stores file differences, not the entire file, for each cycle, and also uses block-checksums to see what parts of the files have changed, so it doesn't need to read the entire backup file, nor store entire files as part of the backup process.
There is a Save Metadata to Files command and there is a Automatically Save Metadata... preference. Either one writes things out to the XMP for RAWs or the image files themselves for formats that support this. I usually have Automatically Save Metadata... enabled but I also explicitly write it out to the files before doing things like purging files off my main work drive and moving them off to a backup device because LR seems to do the Automatic Save Metadata... operation in the background and it's never clear when it is finished. -

What does "extracted channel PDF" mean and why does it continually duplicate on my desktop? I think it happens when I move a file in Finder to another file and when I copy some web files. I have to immediately move to trash all the duplications on my desktop. How do I avoid this on my Mac (Mavericks)? Thanks for your help!
What application is set to open PDF files? If you CNTRL click on the file and open with Preview does the problem occur?
If not change the default application to open PDF files to Preview.
You can do this by highlighting the file and either use CMD i or Get Info , this will open a window with the info on the file with an option to change the application that opens the file.
That's all I can think of. -

You need to assign a role to a user. WHen this user enters the system s/he will be able to save queries under the role (the button 'Roles' will be seen).

How to change preview image of a file and NOT the icon ?
I know how to change the icon of a file, but I wish to know how to change the preview of any file.
For example: my file is "mysong.aif", I changed the icon to be "mylogo.png" using cmd+i, cmd+v on the icon. But the preview of the file still remain the same.
I know it can be changed using iTunes, but I don't want to import all my files in iTune, and iTune cannot import all type of files.
I hope someone will understand my needs...
