How are chapter markers implemented within QT?

Imagine a folder on a USB stick full of files – some may be stills, some videos. I want to be able to play them in sequence at the press of a button, just like an old-fashioned slide show.
Keynote seems to be a possibility, but before I buy Keynote I would have to download and upgrade to Mavericks. So I want to be fairly certain before I take this major step, that Keynote and QT can do everything I want.
I have posted a similar query in the Keynote forum (https://discussions.apple.com/message/26056146?ac_cid=op123456#26056146), but here I want to focus on the QT aspect.
My Slide Show
Imagine a simple sequence in Keynote, 5 seconds per slide, 2-second dissolve, set to Manual advance (meaning the slide show only advances at the press of a button). The sequence is:
Still A
Video
Still B
My slide show would consist of:
Still A comes on screen and stops
I press the button and Still A dissolves into Video and plays. Video freeze-frames at end.
I press the button and the freeze-frame dissolves into Still B and stops.
QT Timeline
When exported from Keynote to QT, I assume the QT timeline would look something like this:
Still A
Two seconds of dissolve between Still A and the video.
Video
Still of last frame of video
Two seconds of dissolve between last frame of video and Still B
Still B
I can't work out how QT could control the navigation. What I would like to know is how chapter markers work. Are there a variety of markers? Or just one that a user can jump to, and from that point play is automatic? Is there a marker that stops play? I've tried googling, but no luck. A link to details about QT markers and how I can control them would be most appreciated.
Ques
Is my slide show possible in QT?

I'm in the same boat. I want a standalone presentation that doesn't require a native application such as Keynote or PowerPoint and that is not system dependant (ie, it works on mac windoze and linux).
In the old days (pre mavericks) Quicktime 7 did this no problem but since the most recent version of QT, this ability has been stripped from the program (as far as I can tell..)  Why would Keynote export to QT, when the main feature in QT that enables clickable presentations is gone, is a mystery.
An alternative is to download version 7 of QTplayer if you are only presenting on your mac. I don't know if the Windows versions of QT have retained the click/chapter headings function or not.
I would like to know if it is possible to enalbe this in the current version of QT or if there is an alternative player that will allow this function?

This is definitely not the behavior I see.  When I left click it adds a marker,

  • Cannot export as says there are chapter markers within 1 sec. of another

I started with a clean slate (I thought) with a new sequence, whereupon I put some chapter markers only to be told (when just about to export) that there were chapter markers within 1 second of other chapter markers and so those chapter markers would be ignored. Why is it saying that when I know very well (at least I think I do) that there are minutes between chapter markers? Could there be something hidden? I have spent hours exporting only to find that most of my chapter markers didn't make it through. Can someone help me with this? Thanks a bunch!

My bet is that you actually do.
Zoom in real close and Option-M (I think) to move to the next Marker... I'll bet you hit the marker button twice really quick somewhere and have two on the timeline.
When you find the bad one... hit M again to pull up the dialog box and then just DELETE.
    Good luck,

  • Is there a limit to how many chapter markers Final Cut X exports?

I've videoing mutlple Dance recitals and I created chapter markers for each dance in one recital.
I share them ad dvd plus audio and the chapter markers imported fine into DVD Studio Pro......
Then next recital and at least 10 more markers and I've tried several ways of sharing them. I've sent them to compressor and they show up there, but when the files are saved and imported into DVD studio, there are no chapter markers...
At this writing I'm sending it to a straight movie to see if chapter markers are there.
    If there's a limit. I don't like that.

For any who this happens too----
I went and deleted all the CHAPTER MARKERS that originally were brought in as markers on the event.
I put them back in manually and the exported OK.
The only thing different I noticed was that one MARKER had an "&" in the title. I switched it to AND, so I'm just guessing with no eperical testing (since my work goes on) that the "&" may have been the problem.

  • Re (captions): How are sidecar files implemented?

    Hi,
I'm a beginner and am trying to understand how sidecar files work. A scenario follows.
(To cut to the chase, jump to Exporting tests, #2)
    Precondition
Premiere Pro CC is open with a short video on the timeline (i.e., Sequence 01).
    Preliminary steps
I created and imported a .scc file
Added the .scc file to the timeline
    Enabled Closed Captioning Display
Opened up the Captions panel and tweaked the timing a bit
    Saved the project
    Exporting tests
I exported the video using the QuickTime format, with the Export Options set to embed in Output file. The captions appeared inside the QuickTime player after I activated the menu options. So, that seems straightforward.
I exported the video using the H.264 format with Export Options set to Create Sidecar File. For output, I get two files: Sequence01.mp4 and Sequence01.mp4.scc.
Here's where I'm stuck, conceptually. What comes next? If you open the MP4 file, the sidecar file doesn't seem to be getting picked up or read.
    Thank you for your help,
    -bruce.

Well, at one point, SCC files were used in submission of TV and Film content to the iTunes store.  I don't know if this is still current or not. Likewise, submission for PS3 and Youtube could also take SCC files at one point.
For the other formats, sometimes they're sent alongside the video to some other downstream processing where they may take the sidecar format and mux the data into some other format for playback over the web.  For example, I believe some of Adobe's web player infrastructure supports reading CEA-608 and CEA-708 captions embedded within H.264 streams.  The desktop video products don't currently embed captions within H.264 frames, and so sometimes other solutions can come in to bridge that gap.
Or, on someone's website, using a custom player they've built (most broadcasters build their own such that they have control over desktop and mobile and rights management and such) have code to grab a specific SMPTE-TT file that will render the captioning data in synchronization over the video during playback.  Same for EBU-TT if you're more EBU.
With the captioning sidecars, it doesn't work like QT references.  The video file has no knowledge of the captioning file.  So if you want to QC them after export, simply open both of them (video and sidecar) individually.

  • How many chapter markers can iDVD handle ?

If I'm going to name each in order to be able to jump to that chapter will I run out of room or will iDVD continue adding "Next" buttons to handle them all ?
    Thanks

    ... okayyyy.....
I understood the Q as "is there any tech-limit?" sorry, me alien, me no english...
you can modify any iDVD theme, choose from many button templates, select fonts and place buttons around the screen... this is no automatic process, your imagination sets the limits... if you buttons just a pixel "large" and nameds as "a", I'm pretty sure, you can place dozends of buttons on one screen...
useful? good looking? good interface?... that's your decision... the templates mainly offer 6 - 8 buttons per page... for good reasons....

  • IMovie to iDVD issue with chapter markers...

what are the rules for placing chapter markers in iMovie? Tried burning a movie in iDVD yesterday only to get a "track initialization" error. i was told it was probably due to where and how my chapter markers were placed in iMovie. went back to the original iMovie file, removed all the chapter markers and, what do you know, it burned in iDVD without a hitch. is there a secret to chapter markers? are there spots they can or cannot go? thanks, in advance, for info.
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi Jonesing:
These I can remember-there may be more.
Make sure no chapter markers are within two seconds of the start or end of the timeline. Make sure no chapter markers are within a transition. Make sure no chapter markers are within two seconds of the end of a transition.

  • Losing chapter markers when moving sequence into main timeline

My second problem may be solved by solving or understanding my main problem.
    Here's the situation:
When I build sequences in FCP and put in chapter markers (I know how to successfully do that when I am working only on a single sequence, so I think the basics are clear) and then drag this sequence into my main timeline I lose the chapter markers and then have to go back through and set them up again (yes they are marked by red markers along the bottom of the timeline). It seems like a nuisance that this is the way the system is set up. Am I missing something or are chapter markers really not moveable from sequence to sequence?
And this brings me to the second problem:
I export as QT into iDVD and when "Scenes" are set up there seems to be no rhyme or reason as how to navigate the chapters (this is after burning the to DVD and popping it in the DVD player). Example: I press the right button and the cursor moves down. Any ideas on what is going wrong?

Yes, I understand the distinction about where to put the chapters markers.
I do put them on the timeline in a sequence. And there they are marked. I can open them and see that they are marked as <CHAPTER>. If I then export this sequence sure enough iDVD sets up scenes to select from.
My problem is when I build start putting sequences next to each other in my main timeline/squence. I hope that's clear. It would look something like this:
    Sequence 1: Sequence 2: Sequence 3 etc.
In this case I would lose the chapter markers from seq 2 and 3. Then I have to go in and reset new chapter markers in seq 2 & 3. Of course I can do that and I have, but I was just wondering if there was a way to make them carry forward so I don't have to duplicate work.
Will post my iDVD question to that discussion forum.

  • Missing Chapter Markers

    Where are my chapter markers!
I am in DVDSP linking buttons to tracks and marker points within tracks and suddenly find that there are no chapter markers!
OK could be me, check FCP, yep there are chapter markers, check the exported, by ref, file in QT, yes the markers are there. Check in Compressor, default setting,
"DVD: Best quality 150mins", no markers, check settings, the should be there, what is going on!
This is going to cost me hours!
    Using compressor 3.0.4

No I chose DVDSP Markers as I wanted compression as well as chapters.
The exported file does contain the markers, they are visible within Quicktime, for some reason Compressor is not seeing them. This is not a one off either. I exported 152 files individually as many of them had markers and am aware of the fact that a batch export from FCP drops the markers.
(Apple when will you do something about this bug in batch export?)

  • Chapter Markers only to skip scenes?

I'm going to place chapter markers from within Final Cut Pro and export the video into iDVD. I do not want to make a menu that the user will be able to use to navigate to the different chapters. I only want to allow the user to skip from one scene to the next.
1.) Are there any issues with not making the menu access the chapter markers, but only using them to skip from one scene to the next.
2.) I'm guessing nothing needs to be done in iDVD because it will recognize the chapter markers from Final Cut?

I was wondering the same thing myself regarding from Imovie 6 to IDVD. I add the chapter markers in Imovie and then when I bring into IDVD, it automatically creates 2 icons; 1)Play Movie and 2)Scene Selections. Does that mean that I have to delete the scene selection icon? Another question: What happens if I leave the scene selection icon and delete only some of the scenes? Will pushing the "skip" button on the set top player casue the movie to jump to the next scene or to the next chapter marker that I have deleted the "scene" for?

  • Lost chapter markers from QuickTime movie in iDVD '08

I have edited a movie in Final Cut Express 4 and exported it to a Quicktime movie. I put in four chapter markers in FCE, and these appear perfectly in the QT movie. When I import this into iDVD 7, there are the correct number of buttons on the scene selection menu, but they all open the movie at exactly the same place.
Is there any way to make iDVD open them properly?

j/c .... are there more than 36 chapter markers / sceenes in your FCE movie?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA40250?viewlocale=en_US
if the above simply doesn't apply, then might you have any of these chapter markers located within 2 seconds of the start or end of your QT movie?
might there be any chapter markers located within a transition?

  • Printing chapter markers for DVD case?

    Hey guys,
Unless I just can't find it, is there a way to list all the chapter breaks in a track and print them in a format that would fit nicely in a snapper case or jewel case? Wouldn't this be a great addition to this application?
I transfer people's videos to DVD for a living and need a utility that does this quickly - would anyone know of something for the Mac that can read the chapter breaks from a DVDSP track or can I export a chapter break list maybe??
    Thanks all,
    Brian

Wouldn't this be a great addition to this application?
    Totally!
A year back I looked at how the chapter markers and times could be extracted from a FCP XML file using PHP. An app was developed (not by me, I hasten to add) which did just that, but not with PHP:
    http://www.spherico.de/filmtools/XML2Text/index.html
This will give you a list of chapters to feed into DVDSP... which ought then to be the same as any list coming out! (Provided you used FCP in the first place, of course).
I don't think it works with DVDSP description files, but you could easily contact Andreas Kiel (the author) and see if that can be added in to future versions.
I've not used the later version of the software, but the alpha and beta stuff looked excellent. There is now a small charge for the product - €45, I believe.

  • Do chapter markers work when file is streamed?

Are chapter markers added in FCP preserved when exported as H.264 and streamed on a QT streaming server? The chapter markers are accessible in the QT player when viewed offline, just want to know if they are also accessible when streamed.
    Thanks.

I'm not a fan of QuickTime, preferring instead the more universal MP4 wrapper.  So I export out a lossless DI and use XMedia Recode to create the H.264 version, which also let's me add chapter points that are respected in several media players.
It would be nice if that were possible straight out of PP.  But before that, PP needs to get have the x264 encoder built-in and include all the many user options that encoder is capable of.  (Getting x264 is my primary reason for using XMedia Recode, the chapter markers are an ancillary benefit.)

  • TS1233 How do I get chapter markers for iDVD from Final Cut Pro X?

It seems like a tremendous short-coming that Final Cut Pro X doesn't allow for chapter markers that can be used in iDVD or DVD Pro. Surely there is some way to get used-defined markers from Final Cut Pro X or at least re-define the Final Cut Pro X markers in the DVD authoring applications. Does anyone know how to do this?

I have decided to say that my problem is solved by the work-a-rounds that have been submitted. I STILL don't like the fact tha Apple has decided that DVD's are a thing of the past and therefore (chapter) markers are of no use. That may be true is the publishing world of YouTube, Vimeo, etc. but it certainly NOT true for many of us advanced hobbyists that still like distribution on DVD's to our friends or a more localized (private) community -- especially to those who are not computer literate. If Apple wants to exclude us from their customer base, I suggest that base will become even smaller than their competitors who still have chapter markers in their products. I'll get off my soapbox now. . .
