RE : Concurrent FAQ

Hello,
I was reading one of the forum topics today where I came across the link for ["Concurrent Programming FAQ"|http://forums.sun.com/ann.jspa?annID=9] , there in the explanation of difference between "volatile & synchronized" is explained with the example.
volatile boolean cancelled = false;
void cancel() { cancelled = true; }
void run() {
while (!cancelled) {
doWork();
}{code}
In the above, cancelled should be volatile otherwise, the compiler can
(HotSpot -server does) hoist it out of the loop, and transform the code
into:
{code:java}
if (!cancelled)
while (true)
doWork();
{code}
And even when I was reading some article on volatile , I found out that from Java 5 , the behavior of volatile is tightened?
Can anyone help me understand these ?
Thanks in advance.

The question I was trying to raise was ,
volatile boolean cancelled = false;
  void cancel() { cancelled = true; }
  void run() {
     while (!cancelled) {
        doWork();
{code}
if the varibale cancelled in the above code is not declared as volatile then how would it transform to
{code}
In the above, cancelled should be volatile otherwise, the compiler can
(HotSpot -server does) hoist it out of the loop, and transform the code
into:
if (!cancelled)
    while (true)
       doWork();{code}
And about volatile behavior after Java 5 , I read  [Volatile Keyword in Java|http://www.javamex.com/tutorials/synchronization_volatile.shtml]
which states that "atomic updates of Volatile variables is possible after Java 5." but volatile variables are directly fetched and put into the main memory instead of
local thread memories.I find that atomic operation only. So what is the difference?
Thanks in advance.

  • Java Concurrent Program - connecting to MS SQL Server

    Hi,
    I hope this is correct forum to post this question.
    I am writing a JCP which will connect to a MS SQL Server DB, pull data from a table and populate this data into a custome table in EBS (R12.1.1) database. But I am facing some issues.
    When I run run this concurrent program from EBS, I get following exception message:
    Wed Aug 08 01:18:04 GMT 2012: In openConection()
    Wed Aug 08 01:18:04 GMT 2012: Before Loading Driver com.microsoft.jdbc.sqlserver.SQLServerDriver
    Wed Aug 08 01:18:04 GMT 2012: openConection() ClassNotFoundException: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: com.microsoft.jdbc.sqlserver.SQLServerDriver
    Wed Aug 08 01:18:04 GMT 2012: Before Calling processPrintMachineRecords()

    Wed Aug 08 01:18:04 GMT 2012: Connection object was null, hence skipping close
    Wed Aug 08 01:18:04 GMT 2012: After Calling processPrintMachineRecords()
    The I read somewhere on internet that I should set CLASSPATH in options field of concurrent program definition. So I provided classpath as follows:
    -cp /rs01/u02/applmgr/utyeb02/apps/apps_st/appl/au/12.0.0/appsborg.zip:/rs01/u02/applmgr/utyeb02/apps/apps_st/comn/java/classes/apps.zip:/rs01/u02/applmgr/utyeb02/apps/apps_st/comn/java/classes/sqljdbc_4.0/enu/sqljdbc.jar
    In this classpath sqljdbc.jar contains the classes for connecting to MS SQL Server DB. However after giving classpath like this I started getting different error:
    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: oracle/apps/fnd/cp/request/Run
    Caused by: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: oracle.apps.fnd.cp.request.Run

         at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:251)
         at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClassInternal(ClassLoader.java:319)
    It appears from the error message that after giving this CLASSPATH, program was not able to find the "Run" method itself. In otherwords, CLASSPATH screwed it further.
    Can anybody please point out what am I doing wrong here?

  • Concurrency in communication channel

    Hi,
    in the file receiver adapter there is a field called "maximum concurrency", which specifies how many messages that comm channel will attempt to process at the same time (concurrently).
    However, there is also a field in the NWA. From SAP documentation:
    ...a new parameter messaging.system.queueParallelism.maxReceivers was
    introduced which can be set in NWA in service XPI Service: Messaging System. With this
    parameter you can restrict the maximum number of receiver consumer threads that can be
    used by one interface. Note: This is a global parameter at the moment that affects all
    adapters. It should therefore not be set too restrictively. We recommend that you set it to 5
    (so that each interface can use 5 consumer threads for each server node) and increase the
    overall number of threads on the receive queue for the adapter in question (for example,
    JDBC) to 20. With this configuration it will be possible for four interfaces to get resources in
    parallel.
    So global parameter affects the hole messaging system, the other just the comm channel.
    QUESTION: What does it mean that the global parameter is set to 0 in my system? I can't find information. Does it mean the parameter is deactivated (I guess so) so there's no global limit? Or it means that it's not possible any paralelism possible in the receiver side?

    Hey Jorge,
    Here are an explanation regarding the different values for this paramenter:
    Maximum Concurrency = 1. This is the default value of Maximum Concurrency. This means a
    single receiver File/FTP channel can acquire only one FTP
    connection. This case does not offer any parallel processing of
    messaging by single channel.
    Maximum Concurrency > 1. This ensures that resource pool size (FTP conneciton size) is
    limited to specified value per single File/FTP receiver channel. For
    instance, setting this parameter to 2 will ensure that a single
    receiver File/FTP channel can acquire 2 FTP connections in
    parallel(if needed).

  • How to Handle the Concurrent User Operation in JDBC

    Here I am updating a table base on flag field. Here I am facing concurrent user problem. Please anybody can tell me how to handle this. If anybody update a row. it should be reflect to other sessions

    Make sure you are calling Connection.commit() after your update. If you are still having problems, you may need to tweak the isolation level. Different vendors have different default settings.
    You could add more details to your post, like database you are using, and the errors you are seeing.

  • New FAQ Entry on JVM Parameters for Large Cache Sizes

    I've posted a new [FAQ entry|http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/berkeley-db/faq/je_faq.html#60] on JVM parameters for large cache sizes. The text of it is as follows:
    What JVM parameters should I consider when tuning an application with a large cache size?
    If your application has a large cache size, tuning the Java GC may be necessary. You will almost certainly be using a 64b JVM (i.e. -d64), the -server option, and setting your heap and stack sizes with -Xmx and -Xms. Be sure that you don't set the cache size too close to the heap size so that your application has plenty of room for its data and to avoided excessive full GC's. We have found that the Concurrent Mark Sweep GC is generally the best in this environment since it yields more predictable GC results. This can be enabled with -XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC.
    Best practices dictates that you disable System.gc() calls with -XX:-DisableExplicitGC.
    Other JVM options which may prove useful are -XX:NewSize (start with 512m or 1024m as a value), -XX:MaxNewSize (try 1024m as a value), and -XX:CMSInitiatingOccupancyFraction=55. NewSize is typically tuned in relationship to the overall heap size so if you specify this parameter you will also need to provide a -Xmx value. A convenient way of specifying this in relative terms is to use -XX:NewRatio. The values we've suggested are only starting points. The actual values will vary depending on the runtime characteristics of the application.

    First of all please be aware HSODBC V10 has been desupported and DG4ODBC should be used instead.
    The root cause the problem you describe could be related to a timeout of the ODBC driver (especially while taking care of the comment: it happens only for larger tables):
    (0) [MySQL][ODBC 3.51 Driver]MySQL server has gone away (SQL State: S1T00; SQL
    (0) Code: 2006)
    indicates the Driver or the DB abends the connection due to a timeout.
    Check out the wait_timeout mysql variable on the server and increase it.

    Would really appreciate if some one can guide me how i can allow the super user "A" to be able to view all the concurrent requests that were submitted by various key users of HRMS.
    I know in 11i there is a profile option: "Concurrent: Report Access Level" that defines who can access the output of concurrent requests.
    I want to assign the same to one user (super user) only in R12 instance.
    how to do this???

  • SQL not working as Concurrent Program

    Hi
    I have the following sql pl/sql script which when I run in TOAD, works fine and successfully updates the custom tables
    declare
    v_position_id number;
    v_curr_org_id number;
    v_new_org_id number;
    begin
    select pos.position_id
    into v_position_id
    from xxsac_all_positions_f pos
    where pos.name like '%'||'&1%'||'%'
    and pos.effective_end_date > sysdate;
    select curr_org.organization_id
    into v_curr_org_id
    from xxsac_all_organization_units curr_org
    where curr_org.name = '&2'
    and curr_org.date_to is null;
    select new_org.organization_id
    into v_new_org_id
    from xxsac_all_organization_units new_org
    where new_org.name = '&3'
    and new_org.date_to is null;
    update xxsac_all_positions_f
    set organization_id = v_new_org_id
    where position_id = v_position_id
    and organization_id = v_curr_org_id
    and effective_end_date > sysdate;
    update xxsac_all_assignments_f
    set organization_id = v_new_org_id
    where position_id = v_position_id
    and organization_id = v_curr_org_id
    and effective_end_date > sysdate;
    update xxsac_all_positions pos
    set organization_id = v_new_org_id
    where position_id = v_position_id
    and organization_id = v_curr_org_id
    and date_end is null;
    commit;
    end;
    However when I create a concurrent program with 3 parameters to run the script - while it runs successfully, it doesn't actually update any of the columns I'm trying to update.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Martin

    Pl post details of OS, database and EBS versions.
    All code in EBS requires these two parameters - "errbuf out varchar2, retcode out varchar2"

  • Concurrent Program ends in Error without any error message - Apps 11.0.3

    Hi,
    We have a concurrent program which errors out sometimes without any error message in log file or anywhere else. This happens intermittently. Is there anyway to see why this happens ( to see error message somewhere else - like FND tables ?). Any feedback is appreciated. This happens in Oracle Apps 11.0.3.
    thanks
    Ram

    Ram,
    Is this a custom or standard concurrent program?
    Was this working properly before? If yes, what changes have been done recently?
    Did you try to relink the concurrent program executable file and see if this helps? Also, you could enable trace/debug and submit the request again and see if more details are collected in the logs -- See (Note: 296559.1 - FAQ: Common Tracing Techniques within the Oracle Applications 11i/R12).

  • How can i control concurrent programs?

    Hi
    When ruinning GL & OPM concurrent programs, de-grades server peformance. How can i control it? I want to restrict the user not to submit or does not run during office-hours. How can it be achieved?
    Regards
    Ariz

    Ariz,
    Please mention the application release, the database version and the OS.
    Was the performance accepted before? If yes, what changes have been done recently?
    Is the issue with standard or custom concurrent programs? Also, please mention the concurrent program names (if possible).
    Do you run "Gather Schema Statistics" concurrent program on regular basis?
    To find out why those concurrent program affects the performance, enable trace as per (Note: 296559.1 - FAQ: Common Tracing Techniques within the Oracle Applications 11i/R12) and generate the TKPROF file.
    You could schedule the concurrent program to run at certain times -- See "Oracle Applications System Administrator's Guide Documentation Set" for details.

  • Parallel processing for concurrent program

    Hi Team,
    Can any one give the suggestions for parallelism of concurrent program. As i am having union's in the select statment . i am not able to use NTILE eventhough i am giving number of threads as 50000 even though it is running for a long time.
    Best regards

    Hi,
    i am not able to use NTILE eventhough i am giving number of threads as 50000 even though it is running for a long timeDo you get any error?
    What does this concurrent program do?
    You may need to enable trace to find out why this concurrent program takes long time to run -- See (Note: 296559.1 - FAQ: Common Tracing Techniques within the Oracle Applications 11i/R12 (Customer Recommended)) for details.

  • 'Gather Schema Statistics' concurrent request question

    Hello,
    I just have a question about the 'Gather Schema Statistics' concurrent request.
    We run this every evening on ALL schemas, however our SYS and SYSTEM schemas aren't registered in the application so therefore stats aren't gathered for these.
    Should SYS and SYSTEM be registered and stats gathered for these 2 schemas every night?
    Please advise
    Thank you
    Sarah

    Hi Sarah,
    First of all, Its not necessary to run gather schema statistics every evening. Either once in a week or month would suffice the need. Please look at the following note:
    How Often Should Gather Schema Statistics Program be Run? [ID 168136.1]
    With respect to your question:
    Sys and system users are not included in the "ALL" specified parameters in gather schema statistic program. It includes the list of product related users. But it is recommended you collect statistics for sys and system users and you can automate and achieve this by creating a job and schedule it at DB level. Please follow the following note which will assist you:
