Re-encoding an audio file in-place? Replacing it with a duplicate?

Here's a scenario for you:
Let's say someone sends me a bunch of stems in MP3 or M4A format. Then I drag them into Logic and start adding tracks. Eventually, the system starts getting overloaded by my effects and decoding all of those mp3's on the fly.
So, I seek for ways to unburden Logic from having to decode all of those mp3's in real-time.
One way to do it is to just freeze the track, but let's say I don't want to do that.
I could run each of the mp3's through a converter to convert them to AIFF, but then that creates a problem. Suppose I've chopped the stems into a bunch of different regions. I can't just drag the AIFF in place of the mp3 in the Arrange window because I'll lose all of my edits to the audio clip.
So, I was wondering... is there some way to go to Logic's Audio Bin (or somewhere else in Logic) and select an audio file and tell it "Stop looking at this location for this clip. I want you to get your audio info about it from here, instead"? The only way I can think of to do it is to close the project, delete/move/rename the original file, load the project, and then, when Logic complains about the missing audio, select "Locate" and force it to the file you want to switch to. But I was hoping there was a slicker way to "re-source" a clip.
Even cooler would be if Logic could do all of this and the conversion for me in one swoop... to be able to select an audio clip and say "Convert to AIFF" or "Convert to WAV". I looked in the clip-editing menus and didn't see anything promising.
Any ideas?

Select all in the audio bin, then in its submenu, 'copy/convert files', then choose AIF or WAV, whichever you like. Done.
Btw, it's not the best idea to be working with mp3s or any other kind of compressed audio format in Logic. Yes, converting them to a non-compressed format will unburden your system of on-the-fly uncompressing, but all the flaws in the sound from the compression process will still be left behind. If you're being sent stems in this format because you're working at a distance and are delivering via the internet, it might be worth looking into other file delivery methods so as to allow sending/receiving full res stems.
There are free online server facilities you can use for this like yousendit.com or dropbox.com (my personal favourite), they are free up to a point but also offer premium services for a decent price if you have larger amounts of data to shift around.
IMO, dropbox is about a trillion times better than .mac or mobile me or whatever they call it these days. It has an excellent feature where you can create a shared folder with someone else (or multiple people), which is perfect for collaboration from a distance. Everyone that is subscribed to that shared folder just sees it on their drive like it's a regular folder, but whenever anyone adds anything or removes anything from it, it updates automatically and in the background for all users. So you can be happily working away, all the while a new bunch of stems are being transferred to your computer without any complicated server skills required from anyone. I use this all the time when collaborating with a writing partner in LA, she is not especially tech savvy but it was no trouble at all to set this up with her.

  • Frames rates encode to audio files

    Hello,
I am not a Soundtrack pro user nor a Final cut pro user, (I use REAPER, and other audio programs); however, I got two people who called me asking (because I am apparently there only audio person they know) "how to change the frame rate on audio already recorded?" One person used the zoom H4N, and the other used a MAudio (?) recorder.. I looked them up and there is no encode to match the frame rate of the film to the sound. It seems that both recorders have no function to do frame rate encoding. (film speed was 24 frames not 30 frames.)
Is there a function to change the audio encode to match the frame rate of the film with in these programs?
What I know is sound is sound; 10 min of footage equals 10 min of audio. It is the encode that tells the film edit tool this is to match 24 frame or 30 frame.
I have looked into the manuals (table of contents) of Final cut pro and Soundtrack pro and not found the key words "Frame rate change to audio files" or "encode to audio files for frame rate"... I also looked online with the words "Frame rate change for Audio files" and "Audio encode frame rate change."
Can anyone help me to pass this information back to these people?
    Thank you!

Tell them to change the sample rate to 48khz/16bit. Straight audio does not have a frame rate.

  • Encode selected audio files?

Does anyone know what this means or where I can read about this function?
I don't see anything happening and I don't know what it is supposed to do.
    Thanks in advance!

Jim,  Thanks for the reply!  I understand a little more now, but I am wondering what the purpose of 'encoding' really is?  Why would I need to encode a file?
As an example, I would like to take a weav file and create an mp3 with it...will this method do that?
    Thanks again.

  • Adobe Media Encoder different audio file to video file.

    Hello,
I've been encoding files from several different DVD's and when I play the encoded file the video is correct but the audio is from a completely different file. This is I am assuming is because the file names on the DVD's are the same i.e. VTS_01_1.. etc. When I realised it was doing this I permanently deleted the incorrectly encoded files, sorted all of the correctly encoded files into seperate folders for each DVD. This did not work even though media encoder was creating new file names for each file it encoded. I then re-named all of the correct files and re-named the files that I was about to encode. I have also cleared the media cache database. The files on the DVD's are fine and play as they should with the correct audio. What do I need to do to get the files to encode with the correct audio?!!! Thank you!

Try this - in Project Bin, right-click the clip in question and select "Make Offline". Then right-click again and choose "Link Media" and point it to the correct source file. Could be that the pointers got all confused as like you said, as sources had the same names.
If that fails to resolve the problem - cleaning the Media Cache only works for projects that no longer exist, or are on a drive that is disconnected. Assuming that maybe the Conformed audio that is being used in the background is messed up, try this - close Premiere, then RENAME the project file, for instance add an "x" to beginning of filename. Now open Premiere (new project), then clean the cache again. Since it can't find your project, it should then remove all temp renders from the drive for that project.
Next, rename project to original name and open and it should conform audio again as if just adding media for the first time. Hopefully for correct clips this time, if you have moved media around on drive to eliminate overlap of file names.

  • How do I save a specific layer as an audio file

I needed a second audio file and created a layer and placed my video file that has the audio I want in that layer.  I edited the audio in that layer and now I want to save the result as an audio file.. preferably an MP3 file. How do I select a specific layer and save just that layer as an audio file?

I would think  with Photoshop you may be able to save it as a video mp4 file then find a Video splitter program to split out the audio.  Or use and Audio program in the first place rather the using a program like photoshop that can do some basic video editing.

  • Where does Keynote store the audio files in a presentation

I have slides with individual audio files. When I import or attach the file and then save the presentation, it changes the file name to .mov extension. Where does Keynote store those files? I would like to edit the saved Keynote version, but cannot locate the .mov file!

I'm not exactly sure of what you want to do, and I'm not sure if my answer is the most efficient, or even wholly correct, but here goes ...
When you save a KN presentation (a KN doc) which includes an audio (or movie) file, you can save it 2 (3?) ways: either without or with the file being copied into the document, or as a "package". In a test file I just made with 3 white slides (title, slide with song, second slide with song) the results:
without: 3.8 MB; with: 9.4 MB; package: 9.4 MB. The essential difference, aside from size, is that if saved without, if you play the KN on another machine which doesn't have those audio files on it, the audio won't be there. To make the KN truly portable, you must save with, or as a package. (I'm not too sure of the concept of package in KN. In PP, saving as a package means you end up with a folder, which contains the PP and the media files, each as separate entities. Saving a KN package yields not a folder but a file, which looks to me identical to the result achieved by simply saving with, and seems to behave identically, as well.) The audio file you used will in any case remain where it was before you used it, but, if the KN doc is saved with, or as a package, a copy of it will go into the KN doc.
But then, what do you mean by "edit"? What do you want to edit, the KN presentation, or the audio file within it? If the former, I don't understand where the problem might be. If the latter: using the QT inspector within KN, you can change the length of the audio file (where in the song it starts and stops), whether to start it on click, or automatically after transition, or to loop it. If you wanted to do some other, more exotic audio editing, like reverbs or other effects, I'd do that on (a copy of) the original audio file (found wherever it was before) with another app (GarageBand, for instance), and then I'd replace the first, non-edited, version of the audio file in the KN doc with that.
    Have I missed something?
Message edited by gbdoc: maybe someone will chime in to clarify the difference between "saved with" and a "package"

  • Annotations in audio files?

We are concidering FCS as a tool for delivering and getting comments on our students multimedia work. Does anyone know if it is possible to create annotations to certain points in a audio file, as one can do with video files? I e.: not the regular comment form field, but making in/out points in a file, and comment on these details.

    Scott:
The only method of creating a proxy file from an audio file i.e. aif, .aac, .mp3, .wav that will allow you to annotate it in Final Cut Server (FCSvr) would be to
    1. Import the audio file into Final Cut Pro
    2. Place an element in the Video track layer, i.e. Slug or something that is same duration of the audio file.
    3. Export that as a Quicktime Movie and catalogue that into FCSvr.
    Things to note:
Audio file by default, don't create clip proxies, no way around this except using the method above which essentially make it a video. Also, the annotation button is not visible on this asset details of an audio track.
FCSvr doesn't create any proxies of Quicktime files (.mov) that contain audio, but no video tracks. The Annotation button show us in the asset details, but FCSvr throws an error The asset 'NAME OF ASSET' does not have a clip proxy!
    Hope this helps.

  • Multiple audio files for one flash video

My company is developing a presentation software program that
is flashed-based. We are developing a series of videos that will be
converted to flash video. We will also be recording multiple audio
tracks for different languages that we want to swap out and sync to
the video (like the different audio language tracks on a DVD). Does
anyone know if you can encode the video and audio to seperate
tracks and then swap out the audio with another and still synch it
    to the video?
We want to try and avoid encoding video for all the language
tracks to save space. If we could have one video file and then
multiple audio files that can be synched with the video file,
rather than having to encode video and audio for each language,
this would save a lot of room. Can anyone think of a way we could
accomplish this using flash and flash video?

nope, Keynote doesn't have "triggers" though I figure this has to be on Apple's radar as it's been brought up every time a new version comes out.
I suppose one work around would be to make a slide for each sound, and have the sound play when you go to that slide. Then make your table a series of buttons that go to each "sound slide" (you can make link buttons, just not triggers). It would give you the effect of clicking to play the sound, it's just that instead, Keynote would be jumping to a slide and playing a sound. All the slides would LOOK the same, and you wouldn't use transitions between them. The effect would get you what you want, it just takes longer to build.

  • How to play non-standard audio file in J2ME CLDC

    Hello,
I am developing an application for mobile. In this application I need to save the text and audio data in one file (extention of the file may be .mmo etc.), and then I need to play the audio from that file with the help of a mobile. (the file will be created with the help of a PC).
I am seeking for help, whether it is possible or is there any other solution? I want to save both text and audio in the same file to facilitate my user.
Your help or comments on my question will be greatly appreciated.
    with best regard,

    Hi japaneagle!
This is the way i would solve the problem and i have not tested it, So there can be some problems while implementing it. The approach is based on BASE64 encoding and XML, there can be some some limitation on file size.
    This is the way.
    1) first you have to encode the audio file using BASE64 encoding. Its about reading the bytes from file and encoding to BASE64 char sequence. You can find serveral BASE64 encoder examples in Java (do Google).
    2) Now you have to create a XML file like this, assume that, file type is WAV and you have the encoded char sequnce..
    <AudioFile>
    <AudioFormat>WAV</AudioFormat>
    <TextData>some text</TextData>
    <AudioData>encoded BASE64 char sequence here</AudioData>
    </AudioFile>
    3) Assume that, now file is available in the memory card. Now you have to read it using File Connection API and parse it using kXML inside your MIDlet
    4) After parsing it you will have file type and encoded BASE64 char sequnce..now you have to decode the charsequnce to byte[]. Then create a ByteArrayInputStream using the byte[].. Here you need a BASE64 Decoder..(do Google).
    then create the player using Manager.createPlayer(InputStream stream, String type) MM API;
Now you can play the file...
You can add many attributes in the XML file if you want...
If you are going to use J2ME polish API for your UI then BASE64 won't be a problem, it has a Base64Encoder and Decoder..

  • Button Pointing to audio file in same directory

I'm fairly new to Flash, but have gotten the hang of it for
    the most part.
I'm trying to create audio buttons that will play vocabulary
words when clicked on for a language learning website. I can create
buttons that play audio when clicked, but as of now the only way I
know how to do it is to add the audio directly to the swf file. The
problem is this takes up about 24kb of space, and there will be
about 20 copies of the button per page, each for a different
    vocabulary word.
I was thinking it would be nice if I could use the exact same
swf file to save on loading time, but have it point towards
different audio files. Basically, I figure if the audio is built
into the swf file, when the page loads it will take a long time,
because it will load all of the audio along with the files. if it
points separately, it will only load the audio when the button is
    clicked.
Is it possible to do this? I've heard that you can use the
object tag to point towards separate audio files, but am not too
sure on how to pull that off. I'm just looking for a way to use the
button I've created and keep speeds reasonable when loading the
webpage. Loading 30 audio files at the beginning can slow it down,
especially if they only plan on playing a couple of them. Each mp3
is only a few kb larger than a swf file with the audio already in
it, so the compression of mp3 in a swf (at least from what I know)
didn't do too much for my case.
I figure I can put all the audio files in a folder along with
    the swf file.

    I really appreciate your help.

You are giving viewers the full title on your web page.
You could cut your files names like < Beethovens_Piano_Concerto_no._2_in_B-flat_major%2C_op._19_-_i._Allegro_conbrio.html >
    to something like BthvnPC2BfM.
Publish to a folder and look in the "Media" folder to see that all your files are there.
A better way to provide a download is to ZIP the music file and link to it via "Link to: A file" in the Link Inspector.
Type "Download" over the file name that appears and select your rollover colors and U or not in the format page.

  • How do i export small clips from an audio file?

How do I export only a small portion of an audio track to file WITHOUT temporarily deleting any part of the audio file?
I have a big audio file. This audio file is a language lesson with many, many clips of english sentences and their target language translations. I basically want to cut up each little section that I don't already know how to translate, and use these audio clips as audio flash cards. There's 1 problem though, and that's my lack of Garage Band knowledge. I easily do this up to 80 times per audio lesson, so a simplified method would be preferred.... boy, I'm sure missing Logic right about now ;(

To export only a part of a track you have two ways:
The easiest way is the "Cycle Region": set the cycle region to the section of the clip that you want to export. The cycle region will show as a yellow bar at the top of the Timeline. You can drag the ends to adjust it. Silence all other tacks and use "Share > Export song to disk (or share to iTunes)". This will only export that section of he clip.
The other way would be to duplicate the tarck and work on the copy of the original: Either trim the ends of the region by draging or cut out the section you want (⌘T). Silence the original and export the copy.
