Re-installing for a User whose Registration Information is Unknown

I've just sold my ibook G4 on ebay. I want to erase and install for the new user, whose personal information and desired "short name" is unknown to me.
How do I erase and install and bypass the set-up assistant (which includes a mandatory registration information) that appears before the installation process?
Thanks for any light shed on this question!

Joelius:
Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Here are a couple of procedures posted by Kappy that should accomplish what you want done:
This is the simple method and doesn't involve erasing the hard drive.
Boot from your OS X Installer. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (or Utilities menu if using Tiger.) After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (3.0.3 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.1.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Next, boot to single user mode. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-S keys until the computer starts up to a black screen with white type.
3. At the prompt, type the following commands, each command followed by the Return key:
/sbin/fsck -yf
mount -uw /
rm /private/var/db/.AppleSetupDone
shutdown -r now
The second-to-last command above will cause OS X to think that the operating system is newly installed, and when you reboot, it will send you through the Startup Wizard.
This is the long method:
Follow these instructions step by step to prepare a Mac for sale:
First, back up the data:
1) Shut down all Virtual PCs. They cannot be in their "fast saved" state. They must be shut down from inside Windows.
2) Clone to an external drive using Carbon Copy Cloner.
Next, prepare the machine for the new buyer:
3) Deauthorize the computer in iTunes! Deauthorize both iTunes and Audible accounts.
4) Remove Open Firmware passwords
5) Turn the brightness full up and volume nearly so.
Install a fresh OS:
6) Insert the OS X install CD/DVD.
7) Restart the computer while holding down the C key to boot from the CD/DVD.
8) Run Disk Utility from the file menu and erase the internal hard drive (optionally zero all data).
9) Install OS X.
10) Reboot the computer.
11) From the welcome screen, you can skip the registration step by typing command-Q.
12) When prompted, create an account (it will be an admin account).
13) From your new admin account, configure networking.
14) Then use Software Update to bring your system and all of it's applications up to date.
15) From Disk Utility, repair permissions on the new volume.
Now delete the account you just created:
16) Boot from a different volume (e.g. a firewire drive, if available)
17) Clean up the image using the following terminal commands:
prompt> rm /Volumes/<imagevol>/var/db/BootCache.playlist
prompt> rm /Volumes/<imagevol>/var/db/volinfo.database
prompt> rm -r /Volumes/<imagevol>/var/vm/swap*
18) Now you can get rid of the admin account you used to set up the machine Use the terminal:
prompt> nicl -raw /Volumes/<imagevol>/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb -delete /users/<admin>
prompt> rm -r /Volumes/<imagevol>/Users/<admin>
prompt> rm /Volumes/<imagevol>/var/db/.AppleSetupDone
19) Shut down and ship it to your buyer. When they get it, it will boot to the Welcome screen just like a factory Mac, except that it's better because it's completely up to date.
With acknowledgements to Kappy
Good luck.

  • Preference Panes - Install for all users, after the fact?

Is there any way to get an already installed Pref Pane to install for all other users once it has been installed for the main account? I am hoping for a way that doesn't require uninstalling the current Pref Pane and reinstalling, some have settings I don;t wan't to lose for the main account.

The app (Bamboo Dock) has installed in the root applications folder. When I'm logged in as the administrator I can see the proper icon in the apps folder and run it. however, when I log on as my son I can see the app but the icon is the default icon with the A and the pencil on and the app won't run.
I didn't have a choice where to install and the app did not ask me if I wanted to install for all users.
I was wondering if I could run the installer app from the terminal with sudo, then I would be giving the installer app the authority to write the receipt? I don't know if this would work or how to do it if it would.

  • Install for all users

Hope this is the correct forum for this question...
I have just purchased a Bamboo tablet and installed the accompanying software on my iMac as an Administrator.
I can use the installed application no problem. However, my Son, who has a standard account, cannot access the installed app. I tried reinstalling it while signed on as him but then the install failed because it could not write a receipt.
Any ideas how I can get this app to install correctly? Can I install it from terminal using sudo while logged in as my son?
    Thanks,

  • Firefox won't install for all users in Windows 8.1; only installs for administrator

Since moving to Windows 8.1, I have been unable to install Firefox for multiple users on this laptop. Firefox installs only for the Administrator (me), and does not appear on any other user account. When I try installing from one of the other user accounts (after entering my administrator password), it simply won't install.

Check that Firefox isn't set to run as Administrator.
Right-click the Firefox desktop shortcut and choose "Properties".
Make sure that all items are deselected in the "Compatibility" tab of the Properties window.
    * Privilege Level: "Run this program as Administrator" should not be selected
    * "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" should not be selected
Also check the Properties of the firefox.exe program in the Firefox program folder (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\).

  • WebStart Single Install for multiple users

Has anyone figured out how to solve the problem of having to install the software for multiple users now?
With recent versions of the Sun WebStart, the cache directory has changed to the user's personal directory.
It used to be that the cache directory was a common shared directory off the C: drive.
For the software we have developed, it was great to install once as the admin, download the files so that they are cached, and then copy the links to the all users desktop which pointed at that shared location.
Now there appears to be no way to do this. We've looked to find the default cache location to change it, but there is no way to specify this (that we've found).
I know I can change each user's cache directory to point to a common location, but it means signing on as each user and making this change manually which takes a considerable more time than it did before. Java WebStart was the EASY way to install the software before (and did not require a browser). Now it is harder than just using a browser with the plugin. We'd like to get the browser out of the picture though still.
I can see how this feature could benifit individual users who only want their own programs to show up , but we really need to make it work like before for ease of use. With the number of users we are dealing with, it would be very difficult to tell them to click on a link to install the program but only do that the first time, then start using the new link that is created by the program.
    Any suggestions from anyone?

Sorry, I just realized this is in the wrong forum.
I'll go post it in a more correct forum instead.

  • Unifier Table name used for storing User-Defined Reports Information

    Hello Everyone,
I am looking for the table name that stores all the User-Defined Reports information pertaining to report creation details. I want to create a dataview that will provides all the user-defined reports the system presently had on file.
Does anyone know about the system auto-created table name for User Defined Reports. It might start with "sys_"
    Thanks

For custom reports, you can find them through data views - "sys_custom_report". I am wondering why UDR tables were not included.
The only effort left is manually copy pasting each name and information from Unifier on an Excel sheet. It will take a lot of time though. I will also log a SR meanwhile.
    Thanks everyone for your help.

  • PowerPoint add-in is not working when installed for All Users using msi installer.

    Hi All,
I have created PowerPoint add-in using c#-vsto. I have created msi installer to install this add-in with following two options:
    1. Just me
    2. Everyone
However, add-in is not working properly (Events and custom task panes are not working).
I have created registry key as below
    1. for "Everyone" : HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Office\Powerpoint\Addins\MyAdd-in
    2. for Just me : HKPU\Software\Microsoft\Office\Powerpoint\Addins\MyAdd-in
But when I set InstallAllUsersVisible property to False (When add-in is installed only for current user ), then add-in works fine for current user.
Please let me know if anything is missing!!!
    Thanks

    Hi,
This is the forum to discuss questions and feedback for Microsoft Office, the issue is more related to develop the add-in, you'd better post your question to the MSDN forum for VSTO

  • Single Webstart install for all users on a PC?

Is it possible to do a single install of a Web Start application for all users on a Windows PC? Currently, it appears that each user would have to do the installation.

I have the same requirement as mikemil. I have read the documentation as dietz333 suggested!
    What have I done:
    - created all the required server side stuff for JNLP
    - created the client side properties.config file referencing the server side system deplyoment.properties via a url
    - this server side deployment.properties contains the property:
    deployment.system.cachedir=c:\\temp\\ws-system-cache
With that I can do on a client:
    javaws -system <my-jnlp-url>
All works as expected. Everything gets downloaded and cached in the specified c:\temp\ws-system-cache!
When I try to "start" <my-jnlp-url> from a browser (ie) it will be stored within the user cache! So, I have to change file association for the JNLPFile type to contain the "-system" option. With that it also works with links in the browser.
    My questions/comments:
    - this requires "some" administrative effort on the client side. Is there a less administrative solution?
    - since there is only a "system" specific location for the deployment.config all Java WS applications ever started will go into this system cache. Wright?

  • How can I configure a Build Specification to install for current user only

Is there any way I can configure an installer build specification to install my application to the current user's folder? This does not seem possible at first glance due to the limited "destinations" available.
Ideally I'd want the application to be placed in "C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData", or some equivilent where it'd be protected from being run by other users without administrative access.
Has anyone been able to do this? Thanks!

There is a destination called [Personal] that goes to the user's MyDocuments folder.  Whether program files should be mixed with a documents folder could be debated.
I see the [Public App Data] choice, but I don't see a [User App Data] option.
Another possibility would be to allow it to go to Public App Data, but after the installation, run a VI that then moves the program folder to the User's Application Data directory.  However, that probably means updating shortcuts as well.  And I don't know whether that VI would essentially step on itself in trying to do that move.
Maybe another choice would be to allow it to install to the program file directory, but use CACLS to prevent users from accessing that directory except for explicit permissions to the one or more users you want to allow to execute it.  An advantage is it would allow one user to install a program for another user to use.  The disadvantage is the person doing the installing would almost certainly have to be an administrator.
A disadvantage of the method you desire is that a user has to be the person logged in and install it for themselves (assuming that group policies allow non-admin users to install their own programs).  Another disadvantage is if you want to have more than one permitted user, it would need to be installed multiple times, one for each.
Perhaps you could install security at the front end of your applicaiton.  Anyone can run it, but the application determines if the currently logged in user is permitted to run it when comparing against some sort of encrypted file that lists valid users.  If the user is permitted, the program moves onto normal operation.  If not on the list, the program tells them so and never advances onto normal operation.
Perhaps someone else can determine if there is a path tagged within the installer builder that goes to the User App Data that I am missing.

  • Setup iPad for other user when iCloud pw is unknown.

I'm a tech director for a school district with ~450 iPads. Often, I get students or staff who move out and leave their iPads logged into iCloud as themselves. I need to get these iPads setup for other users. How can I setup an iPad if the previous user is long gone?
Nobody is going to give me their Apple ID password and I wouldn't expect them to. Recovery mode lets me wipe it but I still need to enter the previous user's Apple ID and pw to proceed.
    I don't use Configurator; I prefer iTunes.

Might be some help on this link, but you may need the password.

  • Logic Additional Content not installing for all users

I've got a MAC installed on an Active Directory domain.  If I log in as the local administrator account, Logic runs fine, but if I log in as any network users, it loops around the 'downloading content' loop for ever.  I've downloaded the .pkg files separately but when I go to run them, it prompts me for credentials and whatever I use, it just crashes out.  Any ideas how to progress this?

  • Are installed apps installed for all users? ...

Moving to a new Mac Mini from Windows 7, kind of an OS X noob here.  ;-)
I created several accounts for all 5 of us in the family. Logged in as myself I installed Google Chrome, accepting the defaults. I see it in my account, but not in the others.
Is that normal behavior? Do I have to install it separately foer each user account? What's the best way to handle this?
    Thanks very much in advance,
    Chris

If you install the application in the Applications folder at the top level directory of your hard drive it will be available to all users. If a user installs it in the Applications folder inside their user directory it will be available to onlly that user.

  • ADE is a separate install for every user?

Hi, anyone can answer?<br />ADE is supposed to be "lightweight solution" eBook reader.<br />However, even though it's not a standalone application like Adobe Reader, digitaleditions1x5.exe it is still consuming almost 10MB.<br />But worst of all, it seems to be a separate install per user, in <br />Vista digitaleditions1x5.exe is in every<br />c:\Users\<User>\AppData\Roaming\Macromedia\Flash Player\www.macromedia.com\bin\digitaleditions1x5. This means that if you have 4 family users on a machine, then the total space taken is almost 40MB. Isn't this ridiculous?<br />Perhaps I have it all wrong, anyone can correct me?

    Jim,
with due respect, you don't think that 4 instances of the same "lightweight" application on one PC (4 users on my system) is dumb? I mean, did Abobe imagine more than one user on a home computer when they concocted ADE?
Adobe Reader (AR) is accepted universally and I think every PC in the world already has AR installed (with the same DRM built-in as ADE) so, why have both (bloats, with multiple instances of ADE) taking up space?
(Like most of ADE users I cannot imagine how ADE is improvement or complimenary to AR for both end-users and eBook providers. I don't mean to be rude or disrespectful, it's just the question of "in God's name, why?" has never been answered by Adobe.)
