RE: List View & Disappearing Columns

I have the same problem.
After a change in my ListView properties I loose some columns, usually
the first and last but it's mostly random.
I had Forte completely crash couple of times after I run the app. !
I am also using ImageData in my subclass DisplayNode class

Subject: List View & Disappearing Columns
I am using a ListView and it seems that some of my columns are
disappearing after I set them in the properties and then compile.
Sometimes they are truly are gone, and sometimes if I recreate them
and
compile again, I get a duplicate object error. I can't tell if it is
because my list view is mapped to a node with an image in it or if
that
is irrelevant. Has anyone else had this problem and is there a work
around using this widget?
I like how the column headings are presented with this widget and
would
like to keep using it.
I am using Release 3.0.G.0

Unfortunately, only Icon and Column views can be set as global defaults. If you open a new window and set it to List view it should continue to open in that same view for the same folder.
You can submit this as a feedback request (I have done so, as have others - we're hoping for implementation in Leopard...).
Hope this helps...I know it doesn't solve the problem, but we're in the same boat, so to speak...
Ps. Are you really running 10.0.x on your G4/G5??? If so, there may be a way to set list view as default, but you should post to the 10.3 & earlier forum as this is the 10.4/Tiger forum.

  • Finder list view name column keeps resizing!

    I mainly use list view in Finder, and I mainly use windows (as opposed to fullscreen) because I like dragging and dropping between them (dragging and dropping in fullscreen with tabs is rather cumbersome).
    Anyway, the name column keeps resizing on me, going from what I have it set to (usually double-clicked to make it fit all filenames) to suddenly being small enough that all the other columns fit in the window without a horizontal scroll bar. This has been happening ever since I upgraded to Yosemite and happens every time I open a new Finder window, expand a folder, move a file, etc. It's incredibly frustrating!
    I was surprised to not find much about this problem mentioned around the web, so I imagine it must be some setting or something specific to my machine. Any help in figuring out how to make it stop doing this would be much appreciated!
    Thanks!

    Sorry, no, preferences in the sense of what I prefer, but I believe view options (command J) are stored in DS_Store files, as well as list view column data, such as date added, date modified, name, kind, size, etc (except for some folders such as network, computer and meetingroom/airdrop?) which are stored in com.apple.finder.plist).  You probably know that you can select which columns display in view options.  Perhaps a temporary workaround would be to switch off other visible columns to display only name or name and one other preferred column to increase space available.  However, myself and another suspect this the problems I described as a bug, and I would have to think your issue is part of that bug.  It seems all related, no? For example, in my Downloads folder, I select to hide "Date Modified", show "Date Added", and arrange by "Date Added".  Maybe it will still show if I close the window and reopen the Downloads folder, maybe it will not, maybe it will change completely to Icon View despite have "always open in list view" being selected in view options.  In any case, after a restart, it will revert back to list view, with "Date Modified" showing and being arranged by "Name".
    Sent feedback to apple, maybe will help if you do as well:

  • Finder List View: Maintain Column Width

    OSX 10.7.3 - I prefer to use the "list view" option in Finder. With that said, I find it maddening that when I re-open Finder following a session where I had resized the column widths, I have to once again resize column width in order to see the full name of a file (instead of it being truncated.). Is there a way to set up Finder so that the columns stay resized each time I reopen a Finder window.

    There's something in your Finder prefs...
    I tested that and it works as expected.
    Have you tried creating a new account and see how your apps work in that User acct? (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.)
    Open System Preferences > Accounts > "+" make it an admin account.
    If this works, then log back into your problem account and Go to Finder "Go" menu hold the option key and choose Library. Then go to Preferences trash these files:
    com.apple.finder.plist
    com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
    Then, restart, or log out and in again.
    (You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)

  • Restoring list view and column customizability?

    I hate hate hate the two column view of the music library. How do I restore it back to a single column?
    Also in My Music list view, I need to be able to add columns to the default view such as genre and disc number. I used to be able to do this, but no longer see this function in the wildly truncated View Options configuration utility. There used to be some 30+ fields by which your music inventory could be displayed. These appear completely absent.
    Halp?!?!?!
    And the 3 column view in Playlists!?!?!?!  *** I just found this....

    Go to the menu on the right of the white bar and click on songs. This brings back your list view.

  • Column width in finder LIST view

    I am using Yosemite.  This issue has been driving me mad for years and try as I may I cannot find the solution.
    How do you set a default column width in Finder LIST view for all folders?  Whatever I do (for example VIEW OPTIONS, USE AS DEFAULTS) does not work.
    Can anybody help? I would use third party plugins if I could find something that controls this.  Please note: I am using LIST view NOT column view.
    Many thanks

    Like Jim, I also generally use Icon view for folders containing images, and have the View Option to show item info selected. Column view will also show image dimensions (both of these work, provided the folder has been indexed by Spotlight).
    If you want to see the dimensions, but also want to view the folder contents in List view, the best you can do is bring up the Inspector (Command-Option-i), expand the More Info section, then move down the list using the arrow key. The Inspector pane's contents change with each new selected item, and the More Info section includes the dimensions.

  • Mavericks Will Not Retain Finder List-View Column Resizing

    I've noticed this to occur at the root level of my hard disk in Finder.  A visual will work best:
    The "User Guides and Information" folder is truncated at the root level of my Hard Disk.  I will then manually resize the column:
    When I close out this window via the red close circle, and re-open, Finder will not remember my custom column view.  It will revert back to the previously truncated state.
    Oddly enough, I've found Finder to correctly preserve custom list view columns when you drill down a level (such as my custom column views inside of my Applications folder, for example).

    I managed to find a solution that sorts the problem out for the time being till maybe Apple rectifies it.  It is to open Finder and have it expanded to fit the screen.  I don't know the proper names of things but in the heading that says Name etc, right click that so that you get a list of other things that can go in that heading, like Date Modified, Date Created etc.
    Tick one or two that you don't need, like Tags for example.  The purpose of those extra headings are to fill the column space at the right hand side of Finder so that it keeps the columns that you DO want on the left hand side kept in the same place.  Once you've got all the headings and columns, move the width of the ones you want to the size that you want, making sure that the ones that you don't want, like Tags, on the right hand side totally fills up the rest of the column space.
    This makes the full page Finder column space full up so that the columns you want don't end up shrinking every time you open Finder.  Return Finder to the size that you usually use, adjust the width of your wanted columns to the size that you want and it should stay in place because the rest of the space in Finder is filled with the unwanted columns you chose, but which are hidden from view on the far right hand side of Finder, if you've got Finder smaller than the full screen, that is.
    Ever since I did this with my columns (in List view) my columns remain where I have set them.  (I hope you understand all that OK).

  • Xtrafinder seems to have broken my 'list view' in Finder. Please Help.

    I'm using 10.9.4.
    I installed XtraFinder a couple of days ago and instantly my Finder didn't work in list view or column view
    I can still use it in icon view but none of the others
    I've attached an image as an example of what happens when I switch to list view from icon view. I have completely uninstalled Xtrafinder using its own uninstall method.

    It's not really clear that you still have a problem, but if you think you do, see below.
    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
    Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
    There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
    You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
    In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
    You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
    Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
    ☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
    ☞ Paste into the window of another application.
    ☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
    ☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
    The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
    Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

    Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
    and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
    If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
    to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
    At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
    If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Weird happenings with list view in OS 10.3.9--one folder only.

    Hello,
    OK, this one strikes me as odd. In one of my folders on the Desktop, when I click list view, it doesn't behave normally. Instead of the regular list view, with the clickable headings on top (Name, Kind, Size, Date created, etc.), only the subfolders show up and on the top is just some nonclickable random stuff, sometimes left over if I've switched over from Column view. I think the best way to "explain" would be to show some screenshots, so I hope I can link these correctly:
    In column view, which is normal:
    http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v284/movingsale/screenshots/?action=view&curre nt=nyufolder_columnview.jpg >
    In list view after column view:
    http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v284/movingsale/screenshots/?action=view&curre nt=nyufolder_listview.jpg
    In list view from a closed folder:
    http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v284/movingsale/screenshots/?action=view&curre nt=nyufolder_listview2.jpg
    I'm sorry I put these as links--I don't know how to put the actual pics in my post. Some more information:
    This only started happening within the last 2 weeks or so, but it happens every time I open this folder off the desktop. As far as I've seen, it doesn't happen on any other folders. I have an external drive that I use for a bootable clone, and it happens on the cloned version of the folder, too. It even happens on an old cloned version of the folder, which I think is from before this started happening.
    I guess my question is, what would cause this, and is it a sign of impending doom, or should I not worry about it?
    Thanks in advance!
    Anna

    Hi Anna,
    I suspect the viewing information for this folder is bad. It is unlikely that there is anything more wrong. I think you can fix it by:
    1. make a new folder with a slightly different name than the bad one.
    2. In some view other than list, move all the contents of the bad folder to the new one.
    3. Trash the bad folder.
    4. Rename the new folder to the name of the one you treashed.
    Does this fix the problem?

  • Files not displaying in list view?

    I recently upgraded my MacPro (early 2008 8core) from Snow Leopard (10.6.8)  to Lion.
    At first i wanted to do a fresh install on my machine but soon realised it wasnt possible to import old accounts from another internal drive so i opted to upgrade the system instead.
    After doing so I was faced with an odd problem of files not displaying in my finder windows when switching through internal drives or changing from 'file view' to 'list view' or 'column view' etc...
    The attached screenshots were taken in sequence youll also note that the path bar & top window name dont update either.
    The relevant drives are in healthy condition with several tests run over them to ensure their healthy(Disk Utility & Drive Genius). I have also run permissions repair, and a utility to empty cahces etc (OnyX). From what i can see its possibly something to do with the Finder not updating or refreshing the window? The issue seems to be isolated to the drives however intermittently the problem exists deeper into the directory on 'TerraTank' Volume.
    The finder also crashes semi-frequently and the problem seems to dispaear for a while and revealing the contents of these volumes for a few mins.
    I have also checked activity monitor to see if any particular process was going haywire and all seemed relativly normal.
    Has anyone else experienced this problem?
    Regards,
    JP

    Onyx may be causing problems.  Don't use it on a non-backed up system, as cleaning caches may damage them, and make things not work.    Make sure your Spotlight indexes all drives you wish to be searchable.  Go to Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Spotlight and add each hard drive to the Privacy section, and then remove it again.  Then click on the Spotlight menu every half hour to see when it stops saying that it is indexing.  It might take a few hours.  But once done, it should be fixed.

  • Suddenly Genres column disappeared from List view

    Hi guys,
    I'm still running 8.0.2, and I can't figured out what happened; Genres column is disappeared from the list view and I couldn't find anyway to show it again.
    I also tried to reinstall iTunes 8.0.2, but nothing changed.
    Anyone know how to solve the problem?
    Thanks!

    Ok, just to make sure that I understand. In the list view in iTunes 8.0.2, you see artist & album column. In iTunes, just as the list starts it indicates what is listed in a gray bar. Right click on the bar & a menu should appear. From that list choose what you want to have displayed. The genera should be one of those options.
    If you are still experiencing issues at that point try the following article on Apple's support page:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1224
    This will show you how to properly remove iTunes from your computer. After trying all of that with out any luck, call the support number & I know that an agent will be happy to help!

  • Excel like 'Freeze column header' functionality in sharepoint OOB list view webpart

    Hi,
    I have OOB external list dropped on a page as listview webpart. It contains many records and hence while scrolling down headers are no available, hence it should freeze all column headers while scrolling down the page. Its directly dragged and dropped
    on site page hence no server side formatting can be done.
    Is there any way we can apply some client side script to freeze column headers to listview webpart while scrolling down? or any settings that can be done to acheive this?
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Rahul

    Hi Rahul,
    Normal techniques for freezing the header row of an HTML table tend to fall short when it comes to SharePoint 2010 lists due to the lack of THEAD elements.
    You can try something like this, although you may want to test it in various browsers in case the column heading alignment is off.
    <style>
    .ms-viewheadertr{background-color:white;}
    </style>
    <script>
    /* wrap the table in a div, set its height, give it scrollbars, and move it down */
    var myTable = document.querySelector(".ms-listviewtable");
    var wrapperDiv = document.createElement('div');
    wrapperDiv.setAttribute("ID","FreezePaneWrapper");
    wrapperDiv.setAttribute("style","OVERFLOW: auto; HEIGHT: 400px; padding-top:38px;");
    wrapperDiv.appendChild(myTable.cloneNode(true));
    myTable.parentNode.replaceChild(wrapperDiv,myTable);
    /* Freeze the header row and move it up*/
    var headerRow = document.querySelector(".ms-viewheadertr");
    document.getElementById("FreezePaneWrapper").style.width = "" + headerRow.scrollWidth + "px";
    headerRow.style.width = "" + headerRow.scrollWidth + "px";
    headerRow.style.position = "absolute";
    headerRow.style.top = ""+(headerRow.offsetTop-39)+"px";
    /* Tell the header's columns to be the same width as the cells in the first "alternating" row */
    var columns = document.querySelector("table.ms-listviewtable tr.ms-alternating").querySelectorAll("tr>td");
    headers = document.querySelectorAll("tr.ms-viewheadertr th");
    for(var i = 0; i < headers.length; i++){
    if(columns[i].scrollWidth > headers[i].scrollWidth){
    headers[i].style.width = ""+columns[i].scrollWidth + "px";
    }else{
    columns[i].style.width = ""+headers[i].scrollWidth + "px";
    </script>
    Edit: Also, you may want to inspect the HTML attributes on the external list view to be sure the class names match up with the querySelector parameters above. Specifically, the table should have a class of "ms-listviewtable", the header row should
    have a class of "ms-viewheadertr", and rows of alternating background color should have a class of "ms-alternating".
    If any of those are different in your case, you may be able to adjust the above code accordingly.

  • How to calculate the total of a calculated column in a list view at the end of the view?

    I have a view with the following columns ProductName, Quantity, Price, Total The total column is a calculated column which is the product of quantity and price. I want to place the sum of the total column by the end of the list view. I can do this with
    the price and quantity but not with the total column. how do I do this?

    You can use SharePoint Designer and calculate the total in xslt view. Refer to the following post for more information

  • How to add custom columns to the list view in Finder

    Hi,
    I'm looking for a way to view additional file details in the list view in Finder, for example audio bit rate, so I don't have to do "Get Info" for each file separately. I couldn't find a way to add columns other than the ones listed on the view options dialog.
    Can anyone help me find a way to do it?
    Thanks,
    Tal

    Have you checked the Help menu for what you want to do? I found this in Apple support - List View Options
    Check the AppleScript Forums. There is probably a script that you can use.

  • Question re. Column View/List View in Home Folder and Root Folder?

    <Edited by Host>
    When I set either my Home folder in the Dock or the Root Folder on the Desktop to open in Column View, everything opened is retracted upon closing.
    Is this just the way Leopard is, or am I missing something obvious I should know:
    First, on Tiger, my Home Folder opens directly in the Finder. I don't have to select "Open in Finder," as I have to in Leopard.
    Second, when I select the Column option when opening the Home Folder in the Finder, it automatically sets the Column option for the Root Folder on the Desktop, as well (and vice-versa). In Tiger, they can be set independently. I prefer to have the Root Folder set to List View and the Home Folder to Column View, and have both remain like that. This is what I meant, but got a bit confused before in asking the question.
    Also, is there some way, as in Tiger, to have the Home Folder in the Dock set to open automatically in the Finder, without having to select that option each time I go to the Home Folder?
    Actually, now that I remember, perhaps this isn't such surprising behavior. To get it there, I copied the Home Folder from its position in the Root Folder to the Dock. Maybe there is some other way to get the Home Folder into the Dock? Thanks.

    Thanks. The option "Open in Finder" appears at the bottom of a small vertical menu when I click on the Home Folder in the Dock. Command clicking on the Home Folder brings up the other user account, Shared, and my user account, so it's not that useful.
    ah, you are right. well, one more option is to make an alias to the home folder, put it anywhere you want and put the alias on the dock. then clicking (no command-clicking needed) on the alias in the dock will open home in a finder window directly.
    The default in Finder Preferences was already set the way you suggested.
    Now that I know about cmd-n, that gets me directly to the Home Folder in the Finder. And now that it's set up to open in Column View, and remain that way independent of the View option for the Root folder, everything seems to be looking good. That's what I needed.

  • How can I set a default finder list view column size?

    Hi,
    I am having a bit of an issue here.
    I like to use the list view in finder.
    I want to set the name column to a certain size globally, so that all folders display the name at the same width.
    However, currently I resize the column in the folder I'm working in, change folder and return to the original folder and the size has returned to the defaults.
    Any suggestions would be very welcome.

    Hold down the Option key and drag the vertical column right or left as needed.
    Close that Finder window then open a new one. See if that worked.
    It's working for me in Mountain Lion v10.8.4
