Re: LR 2.1 LR freezes upon attempt to import from disk

System: Win XP SP3
Don't recall the order I did this in and don't know what might be relevant, but I upgraded to LR 2.1 from 2, from Beta 2, finally got the courage to uninstall LR 1.4, and used Uniblue Registry Cleaner to hopefully improve that aspect. Now LR freezes after I select 'import' a photo or 'import all photos in selected folder'. (Just when I threw caution to the wind.) So, is reinstalling LR2 the only solution? Thanks for any help. Anne

Boy, I quit messing with registry cleaners a LONG time ago, after seeing so many systems get hosed even worse.
What did you hope to accomplish by running it?
I'd probably just re-install LR2.
BTW, The registry tends to suck as a piece of technology, but then again it is quite possible for it to be filled with leftover, dead entries that cause no harm to the system at all. It's just text.

Without proper system info and other technical details nobody can tell you much. This could be something to do with the sync features, so as a start turn that stuff off.

• Lightroom 6 crashes when attempting to import from camera.

Never had a problem importing from same camera using LR 5.7. LR 6 crashes when attempting to import from camera.

Actually I have found out that it's not related to importing, but to face recognition being turned on (which I had just done shortly before I started the import).
See here for more details: Re: Lightroom 6.0.1 standalone always crashes less than a minute after start

• IDVD freezes when attempting to make a disk image

I created an iMovie, edited it and added music. I clicked Create DVD within iMovie and created my .dvdproj. I then attempted to create a Disk Image in iDVD and the application just keeps freezing during the Process Movies stage. What would be causing this??? This is becoming increasingly frustrating.
I have 37G of space available on my iBook and 92G of space on my external hard drive. I attempted the last disk image from the external hard drive. Any help/direction would be greatly appreciated.
Mike

I don't recall if I formatted the Lacie exteranl hard drive when I purchased it, and I now have files/photos, etc saved to it.
problem is, formatting a drive means erasing all content... using Disk Utitily, choose connected drive - you can read in the lower third, how it is formatted.. if FAT32, you have to save the data "somewhere else" (me wiseguy..burn some data DVDs..), and then format to hfs/MacOsExtended, most ext.hd are out-of-the-box formatted for PC, as said, that works with a Mac, but not with video files....
Yes, some of the music was purchased through iTunes.
AHA!!
… there's a time consuming, legal workaround:
do you know, how to create audioCDs with iTunes? link to Apple doc
make a playlist of your purchased tunes, burn an audioCD..
then, sorry to say that, re-import from that audioCD back to iTunes/or drag'n drop files directly into your iM project's timeline...
this process is needed, to get rid of the copyprotection which is installed inside the aacs you bought from iTMS... that workaround is legal and Apple recommended (lost that link to some Apple doc...anyone?)
... I've read here many people experiencing that "frozen" iDVD because of usage of iTMS music, I don't know why Apple has not implemented some "warning message" in iDVD/iM, telling the average user that issue ("you try to use copy protected music - please follow advise... - something like that..
happy copying!
PS: 29Gb is fine... iDVD needs 10 - 15GB for some temp files (which are not shown in finder and will vanish after burning), and your Mac needs some 5Gb to be a happy Mac...

• FCPX freezes when attempting to import media

Hello,
I'm having trouble when attempting to import media to FCPX in that it won't even open up the browswer window to select files - it just hangs and I have to force quit. I have the latest version of FCPX and have used this previously without issue. I have tried deleting the programme and downloading a new version and re installing it. I am running a 2010 imac 2.93 i7 with 12 gig of ram. Any ideas as to what I can try to get around this?
Many thanks,
Ben

Hi Russ,
Yes all the latest versions.
Funily enough I had just deleted pref files after viewing another thread - no joy.
All media files are unavailable because it won't let me explore to find any.
I jave just dragged in a file to the timeline and that has imported. I am trying to edit C100 AVCHD files so work around so far is to import to imovie and then export as MP4s and drag into FCPX - not ideal at all but at least I can do some work.
Many thanks,
Ben

• IPhoto freezes when attempting to upload from iPhone 4

I'm attempting to back up my photos from my iPhone 4 to iPhoto on my MacBook (1,700 items). All is well until it reaches 194 photos left and then iPhoto freezes. I then have to force quit. I've tried four times but it always freezes at the same point. Any ideas what may be happening? Thanks

A damaged file at that point is a likely cause.
Can you access the images using Image Capture (in your Applications Folder) ?

• System freezes when attempting to upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion

I hope someone can help me out there. I have downloaded the Lion upgrade install program and built an install disk on my jump drive using Lion Diskmaker 2.0.2, but when I tried to upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion using the jump drive, the install freezes at 24% and I cannot reboot or anything. It just keeps coming back to the install screen. Any suggestions?

This could be due to a number of causes. If you have the Lion installer application, then I suggest you put it in your Downloads folder. Now do this:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
When you've done the above you should now double-click on the Lion installer application in your Applications folder. When prompted click on the Install button. Note that you will not use the flash drive you made as you shouldn't need it. And, this will avoid any issues with a bad flash drive installer.

• PPro CC 2014 freezes upon clicking Browse for scratch disk

Hi forum.
I just upgraded from CS6 to CC 2014. When I open up one of my many current CS6 projects, CC says it needs to save it as a new CC file, ok no problem.
Then it pops up with scratch disk options, and they are all set to the C:\ by default. When I click Browse, to locate and select my cache drive, Premiere freezes for about 2 minutes. In fact, I thought it froze indefinitely until it unfroze while typing this post
I don't have any drive issues, no disks in the bd rom, no memory cards in the usb card reader, no drives set to sleep....what's causing this?
Thanks

Thanks for the quick response, Mr. Haugen. So I tried that. It kind of works, and it'll have to do for now just so I can finish up.
Opening up a previous auto-save actually does the same as the main project file I'd been working with. But like I mentioned, if I open a working project file first and then this one, it does allow me to play back. The auto saved one at least let's me make edits and export without freezing. But I still can't switch over to another timeline, otherwise it freezes again. So, problem not really solved, but I'll kind of walk on eggshells as I work just to complete the edit, and then hopefully never have to come back to this project file again if I can't figure out the issue completely.
I'm still open to more suggestions if anyone has them!

• MacBook Pro Locks Up (freezes) when trying to import from iPhone6

I have a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Early 2011) with the latest OS on it. Recently (regrettably) I did the update for Photos. First of all Photos is terrible compared to iPhoto. The layout and everything is just terrible. The worst is that as soon as I plug in my iPhone 6plus to import photos, everything locks up - totally freezes and the screen even goes black.
How I undo the Photos update and continue with iPhoto without losing anything?
Thanks

• Error when attempting to restore from disks.

I am trying to restore the PB G4 12-inch. It goes through most of the process and then says there was an error and to restart. I've tried modifying the installation, but it is still doing the same thing. Prior to this there were no problems at all. Bought a new MB Pro and brother is buying the wife's G4. I ran Apple HW Quick Test and no errors detected. Ran Extended Test and gives me an error code: 2STF/8/3:ATA-100 ata-6 - Master. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I'm a PC convert so don't let me down....

The way to write zero's to the file when you erase it is, in Disk Utility, choose the drive, then click erase, and click the security options screen. Here you can choose to write zero's once, or many times, which takes many times longer to run. Writing zero's once should do it for you. Click erase and let it go.
After writing zero's, Disk Utility should be clean if you repair the disk, however, if it fails due to an error, the drive is a goner. If, however, Disk Utility is OK, but the AHT still says you have the same error, that says either the hard drive is bad or there is a logic board issue. If you have either of the TechTools programs around (if someone had Applecare, TechTool Deluxe is downloadable at no charge), they could also test the hard drive.
If you happen to have a 2.5" parallel ATA hard drive case handy (doesn't everyone ), you could remove the hard drive, put it in the case, and try it on your other mac notebook. If it works there, then that points to a logic board issue (and of course if it doesn't work, the hard disk is bad). Logic board replacement is around $350, and they might replace the hard drive too. You get that price taking your system to the Apple store and having them send the system to the Apple depot. If the case is banged up, they charge more, as the depot does whatever it can to put the system back into almost new shape.
Or you could replace the hard drive and hope that takes care of the problem - assuming it's not a logic board issue, a new drive would be the fix. Hard drive failures in notebooks between 3 and 5 years are not unusual. Apple can do that for a fee, or if you or a friend is handy, you can buy the drive and follow directions to replace it yourself. Or you can buy the drive and/or go to an Apple Authorized Service Provider and have them install it for you.
Replacement hard drive is 2.5" parallel ATA interface, not serial or SATA, which newer computers use. A selection from a site I use is http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010150380%201035907 889&name=ATA-6
Alot covered here, please post back with any questions.

• ITunes opens only in safe mode; freezes upon normal opening (possible solutions that I found to similar problems don't seem to apply)

Hello. I've encountered a problem with my iTunes that I would like some help on solving. My computer uses Windows Vista. iTunes recently began to freeze as soon as I opened its window. On two occasions, it appeared to work the first time after turning the computer on, but would freeze upon subsequent openings. No error messages are given. It will either freeze while saying "Accessing iTunes Store," or without saying anything at all. However, iTunes appears to work just fine when I open it in safe mode (holding Shift + Ctrl while opening), although I have not yet attempted to sync a device while using safe mode. I attempted to update iTunes to its most recent version (10.6.3.25) after first experiencing this problem. The first time I tried, it didn't work, saying that "errors occured" during the update. I disabled my antivirus software (Kaspersky Antivirus 2012) and tried again. This time, my computer said that the update was successful. However, the freezing problem has persisted.
After looking through Apple support and other discussion topics, I found several things to check for (relating to similar problems) as follows. I checked for them, but they don't seem to apply to my situation. Here is what i found.
From Apple Support:
Check for third-party plugins in the following two folders:
-C:\Users\username\App Data\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes Plug-ins\
Result: I found this folder, but it is empty, even with "Show hidden files and folders" enabled.
-C:\Program Files\iTunes\Plug-ins
Results: I did not find a "Plug-ins" folder in this directory, nor in the iTunes directory in Program Files (x86). However, there is a "Mozilla Plugins" folder in the (x86) directory, containing files "npitunes.dll" and "npitunes.xpt."
From Community Discussions:
-Conflict with Advanced SystemCare security tool by IObit or iCloud Control Panel
Result: These do not appear to be installed on my computer.
I also found something about Bonjour service, and that some people's similar problems were temporarily resolved when disabling Bonjour and reopening iTunes. I tried this, but it did not make a difference.
Does anyone have any ideas of what might be causing this? Thanks for the help!

No error messages are given. It will either freeze while saying "Accessing iTunes Store," or without saying anything at all.
I'd try the following document:
Apple software on Windows: May see performance issues and blank iTunes Store
(If there's a SpeedBit LSP showing up in Autoruns, it's usually best to just uninstall your SpeedBit Video Accelerator.)

• Qosmio G30 freezes upon Norton Internet Security 2008 startup

Norton Internet Security 2008 will freeze my computer as soon it tries to load and the only way to go on is to restart the system by pressing the on/off-button.
My notebook is a Toshiba Qosmio G30-177 (Model No. PQG32E-02G022GR) with Vista Ultimate and NIS2007 pre-installed. I have no problems with this NIS2008 version on my other notebook (Qosmio F10 - PQF10E-02300JGR, WinXP MCE).
NIS2007 runs fine on my G30 and I do not have any problems at all, but newer versions of NIS seem to get in conflict with my system:
1. I am able to install and run the new version, download all updates and adjust the settings. Maybe one or two days later my computer will freeze after start exactly when the tray icon of NIS appears. For a couple of seconds there is just no response of the system at all and the LED's of my notebook show that all HD activity has stopped. After being idle for these couple of seconds, the cooling fan will start to operate at maximum power, creating a tremendous noise I never experienced before, not even while the CPU was running at 100% for some time due to other programs. Forcing a restart is all I can do.
2. Now this time, I successfully restarted my notebook again (took some attempts) and it suddenly did not freeze. Then I disabled firewall and auto-protect permanently, so there was no freezing upon startup and I just had to manually activate both firewall and auto-protect after start. In order to prevent freezing again after reboot, I always disabled NIS before shutdown. For the next one or two days this workaround was quite successful.
3. All of a sudden, after one or two days, this workaround is going to become useless, because the system starts to freeze again at the very moment the tray icon appears. In this case, restarting has no effect at all, and NIS will continue to freeze at startup. I also tried to prevent NIS form starting by no longer allowing ccApp.exe to automatically run upon start (administrative tools > system configuration > "startup" tab). This is successful and my notebook is able to start normally, but if I later try to start NIS manually, it will freeze again.
I had this problem since NIS2008 was just released, so I thought that meanwhile a Windows or Norton update might have fixed the issue, but this weekend I gave NIS2008 another try without success. I am almost sure that the problem is not caused by any other software than Windows and/or Norton, because I also tried to install NIS after a full system recovery, thus having only pre-installed NIS2007 and Vista on my notebook. I did use the Norton removal tool and followed the deinstall instructions before trying to install the newer version of course.
My last hope was that the NIS2009beta version somehow would not freeze my system, but it does. It does not matter if I try to run 2008 or 2009beta version, the problem is exactly the same.
What really drives me almost crazy is the fact that NIS runs perfectly for some time, then needs a rather small workaround, and then after some time totally refuses to work. In these couple of days I did not change any system settings, install or deinstall any programs or did anything that I felt could conflict with NIS...
So far, I have no idea of a solution and have to use NIS2007 again.
Does anybody know how to solve this problem?

Hi !
I use NIS since 2001 and never had any serious trouble with this software.
There could be some compatibility problem, but I don't think that Vista is causing it, because otherwise a lot more people should have the same problem. Even the installation of all current Windows, NIS and Qosmio updates did not solve it. Of course I tried to get help using Symantec's Support and their user forums, but without success. This problem seems to be a rare one (unfortunately for me). I tested the NIS2009beta and even though it's a new version, the PC freezes again when this program starts. And this made me think that maybe a service or setup by Toshiba causes the problem and other Vista users are not affected. It's a strange thing that the pre-installed NIS2007 version is running fine...
Cheers,
Mario

• I attempted to import pics from iphoto to a folder on my desktop but somehow clicked desktop so 45,000 pics loaded, now computer freezes after trying to load everything. possible to reverse this? options? restore hd from time machine? pls help!!!

long story short...i attempted to import pics from iphoto to a folder on my desktop but somehow clicked desktop so 45,000 pics loaded to my desktop and now my computer freezes up after trying to load everything, and i'm not able to just drag the photos into the folder. is it possible to reverse this? what are my options? restore hd from time machine?
a further question to restoring my hd from a previous backup on time machine...it says it will erase the hd. does it actually erase everything or does it just erase anything that may have been added or downloaded since that backup? this is confusing to me.
another problem which is part of the original problem is it seems that when i connect my iphone to my computer and iphoto uploads my pics...it doesn't just upload new ones, it duplicates and uploads every picture again...which is why i have 45,000 pics...they are 40,000 duplicates! what's up with that?
I have a macbook pro, and recently updated the os to Yosemite. the iphoto app is out of date, but i'll worry about that once i can figure out how to get all those pics off the desktop. also, i recently purchased and installed 8g of new ram, but that hasn't seemed to help.
any advice would be appreciated!
thanks!!

thanks for replying.
the booting and walking away and then attempting to browse and clean method is what i've been trying to do. it won't let me drag and drop and just freezes up and goes to sleep after 2 minutes. it's a never ending battle with very few results. which is why i questioned the method of just restoring the hd from a time machine backup.
do you think restoring the hd from time machine will resolve the issue with all pics on the desktop? and everything will be as it was from the date i restore it from? sorry, as you can tell, i'm not overly computer savvy.
i have a really old desktop mac...i can try connecting the two...how does one boot a mac in 'target mode'?
as for the iphoto cleaning and organizing issue...that is what i was trying to accomplish with importing them to a folder. was going to browse and clean from there...but somehow imported to desktop which is what's complicating everything. once i get them off the desktop i can work on the iphoto issue...which as i mentioned...i didn't take 45,000 pics...i've just taken about 4,500 over the last few years, and they are being duplicated in iphoto. this was my attempt to clean it out entirely and start over. it will basically be a lot of deleting.
one problem, seems to lead me to more...which is just my luck. :-)
thanks again, for your help.
