Read-only aaa statements

I've setup the TACACS server with two groups
-FULL admin rights
-READ only rights
Two users have been created
-admin_test
-read_test
The admin_test config works fine on AAA but i keep getting stuck with read_test configs. I can never get to enable mode eventhough i've defined it on the group policy. Is there something wrong with my aaa statements below?
aaa authentication login default group tacacs+ line enable
aaa authentication enable default group tacacs+ enable line
aaa authorization exec default if-authenticated
aaa accounting exec default start-stop group tacacs+
aaa accounting commands 15 default start-stop group tacacs+

Privilege is not scalable in a big environment.
What you need is authorization on the ACS
server. In Cisco Freeware TACACS+ I defined
the following groups: readonly, advanced and
admin:
group = readonly {
default service = deny
cmd = show { deny .* }
cmd = show { permit .* }
cmd = copy { permit .* }
cmd = ping { permit .* }
cmd = enable { permit .* }
cmd = configure { deny .* }
cmd = disable { permit .* }
cmd = telnet { permit .* }
cmd = disconnect { permit .* }
cmd = where { permit .* }
cmd = set { permit .* }
cmd = clear { permit line }
cmd = exit { permit .* }
cmd = debug { permit .* }
group = advanced {
default service = deny
cmd = show { permit .* }
cmd = copy { permit flash }
cmd = copy { permit running }
cmd = ping { permit .* }
cmd = configure { permit .* }
cmd = enable { permit .* }
cmd = disable { permit .* }
cmd = telnet { permit .* }
cmd = disconnect { permit .* }
cmd = where { permit .* }
cmd = set { permit .* }
cmd = clear { permit line }
cmd = exit { permit .* }
cmd = interface { permit .* }
group = admin {
default service = permit
As you can see, admin can access everything,
readonly can only read. Advanced can make
limited changes and admin can do everything.
On the Cisco router, I have the following
configuration:
aaa authentication login notac none
aaa authentication login VTY group tacacs+ local
aaa authentication enable default group tacacs+ enable
aaa authorization console
aaa authorization config-commands
aaa authorization exec notac none
aaa authorization exec VTY group tacacs+ if-authenticated none
aaa authorization commands 0 VTY group tacacs+ if-authenticated none
aaa authorization commands 1 VTY group tacacs+ if-authenticated none
aaa authorization commands 15 VTY group tacacs+ if-authenticated none
aaa authorization network VTY group tacacs+ if-authenticated none
aaa accounting exec VTY start-stop group tacacs+
aaa accounting commands 0 VTY start-stop group tacacs+
aaa accounting commands 1 VTY start-stop group tacacs+
aaa accounting commands 15 VTY start-stop group tacacs+
aaa accounting network VTY start-stop group tacacs+
aaa accounting connection VTY start-stop group tacacs+
I find that by doing it this way, it is much
more scalable than using privilege commands
on the router itself.

• Database open for read-only access ORACLE

while building a universe with a dblink betweens oracle databases, i try to create a derived table in the form
select field1 from table@db_to_db2
but i get the following message:
Exception: DBD, ORA-16000: database open for read-only acces State N/A.
I understand the statement "Set Transaction for read only" must be set before any transaction during the session, but still dont know how to trigger it in bo universe designer.
Can someone know how to solve it?

I suggest you fill-in the BEGIN_SQL parameter on the Universe to turn on the read-only transaction.
Here is an excerpt from the Universe Designer guide:
The BEGIN_SQL parameter allows you to prefix SQL statements with the same parameters each time a SQL statement is generated.
1. Open the "Universe Parameters" dialog box in Designer.
2. Click the Parameter tab.
3. In the "Parameter" list, select the BEGIN_SQL parameter and enter the
appropriate prefix commands.
4. Save the settings.
5. Save the universe.

• Read-only radiogroup with default doesn't save state in 2.0

Hi,
I upgraded to HTMLDB 2.0 and noticed a change in behavior. Namely, when I have a read-only radio group with a default value and a not-null validation, the validation claims fails although a radio button is selected from the disabled radio group.
Here's a small app I generated to demonstrate the issue:
http://htmldb.oracle.com/pls/otn/f?p=34464
Go there and try to create a new EMP.
The only things added after the generation are:
1. Not-null validations on several of the fields
2. Changed MGR to a "Select List"
3. Changed DEPTNO to a radio group with these properties:
a) default value type: static; default value: 20
b) read-only when: P2_EMPNO is Null
This used to work fine in 1.6 - namely, the default value got it to the session state and consequently the validation succeeded and the new record was created with the default value.
It also works fine if the Radio Group is not read-only.
I was able to fix the problem by adding a calculation to the P2_DEPTNO item to set the default value there. This of course does not show the default on the form for the new record, so I had to keep the default on the item level as well - which is a potential source of bugs when those two defaults somehow get different values (e.g., when I change only one of them and forget about the other) - the user will see one thing displayed while another will be saved. So any solutions involving keeping the default value on only one place AND visible to the end user when creating new records are welcome.
I haven't had time yet to test with other item types - maybe next week...
Have a nice weekend!

Scott,
Yes, in 1.6 this used to work fine - the radiogroup was displayed as disabled, and the default value was selected, and the not-null validation succeeded, and all I did was set the default value of the radiogroup. I have no 1.6 environment anymore to test it, but I'm sure it was working, because after I upgraded to 2.0, it stopped working and I got a bug report from a user very, very quickly :-(.
By "adding a calculation to the P2_DEPTNO item" I mean "adding a computation of the P2_DEPTNO item to the page". Sorry about me being lazy here. It was (still is, in my production application) a conditional after-submit computation (if <primary key item> is null, set <radiogroup item> to <default value>)
Thank you for the suggestion. I implemented it in the demo app. What I did was:
1. remove the default value from P2_DEPTNO
2. Add an unconditional after-header computation that assigns P2_DEPTNO with the static value 20
I am able to create new EMPs now, but nothing is selected in the disabled radiogroup on the create page, although the value 20 is saved in the session state before the items are rendered, according to the debug info (you can try it out and see).
To recap, I still need to keep the default value in two places: default of the radiogroup (to get it displayed on the create form), and in a computation (to set the session state).
Cheers,
Flado

• Programming help - how to get the read-only state of PDF file is windows explorer preview is ON?

Programming help - how to get the read-only state of PDF file is windows explorer preview is ON?
I'm developing an application where a file is need to be saved as pdf. But, if there is already a pdf file with same name in the specified directory, I wish to overwrite it. And in the overwrite case, read-only files should not be overwritten. If the duplicate(old) file is opened in windows (Win7) explorer preview, it is write protected. So, it should not be overwritten. I tried to get the '
FILE_ATTRIBUTE_READONLY' using MS API 'GetFileAttributes', but it didn't succeed. How Adobe marks the file as read-only for preview? Do I need to check some other attribute of the file?
Thanks!

Divya - I have done it in the past following these documents. Please read it and try it it will work.
Please read it in the following order since both are a continuation documents for the same purpose (it also contains how to change colors of row dynamically but I didnt do that part I just did the read_only part as your requirement)

• Acrobat XI states file is read-only when trying to save

For the last couple of weeks I have had this issue . . . when saving to our shared drive, Acrobat XI states file is read-only (pop-up below) and I must save as a different name or in a different folder.
I must then save the file to a different folder or drive. No other Adobe product has this issue and it only occurs on our shared drive. IT states I have full permissions for the folder.
Anybody else have this issue?

I'm glad it was that easy, frankly! :-)
Glad it solved the problem for you!

• Session state protection and read-only items

I have a requirement to create a report + form for a database table. In the form, there is mandatory database column that needs to be displayed but it should be read-only and its value derived using values entered elsewhere on the screen.
It tried Display Only, Read Only and Disabled but they either fall foul of session state protection violation or ORA-01400: cannot insert NULL. The best method that I've found was to add readonly="readonly" the item element, but this causes the input item to lose its APEX classes and I'd prefer a declarative solution anyway.
Anyone know the best approach?
I've created a DEMO - http://apex.oracle.com/pls/apex/f?p=READONLY - which demonstrates the 4 methods.

However a possible explanation/justification for this behaviour is that the HTML Form Element Attributes are often used to specify a custom class for the item, so the default class is removed to prevent any conflicts. IMO APEX needs to provide declarative support for the use of multiple, space-separated class values in page, region, item etc attributes.
As a workaround in this case, just include the class in the HTML Form Element Attributes:
class="number_field" readonly="readonly"

• Time Machine reported 'volume is read only' & rolled back to old state

I've been in love with Time Machine ever since Leopard arrived. This has all come crashing down over the last few days...
Firstly I got a new 1tb drive, so I mirrored my old TM drive (using SuperDuper), and all seemed to be fine – backups were chugging along for a week or so as normal on the new, bigger drive.
A few days ago I got a time machine error stating that "The backup volume is read only". I thought this was strange as the drive was working without issue for a week. I checked permissions, format, etc and all were set correctly. I restarted and Time Machine kicked back in and all seemed to work fine other the fact that there seemed to be no backups created for 6 hours before I got the error message. Then I made a scary realisation, somehow the files on my computer had been restored to a state from 6 hours prior, all the work I'd done for the morning was gone.
I put this down to a one off glitch (stupid, stupid, stupid). I've today got the same "backup volume is read only" message again, and this time around my files have been restored to a state from 3 days ago. Fortunately this time around Time Machine has a backup of the important stuff a few hours ago.
I am now very worried about using the same disk with Time Machine. I also have no idea if Time Machine is the culprit (but logic tells me with the rolling back of files it must be). What should I do? How can I figure out what is going on?

This may fix the "read only" problem:
What to do if Time Machine reports you don't have permission
This was posted in the Apple Discussions by V.K. I have only modified it slightly to be more generic.
The problem seems to be that 10.5.6 changes permissions on a file so that even the root user doesn't have write peivileges. I have no idea why they did this. The workaround suggested in [an]other post will probably work, too, but i did something less drastic. Instead of deleting the file I changed permissions on it, and it worked just fine. An added benefit is that the permission change seems to stick, so you don't have to delete the file every time you change a drive.
[Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt [enter] the following command:
sudo chmod 644 /volumes/"TM drive name"/.xxxxxxxxxxxx
The name of the file .xxxxxxxxxxxx is based on the MAC address of your computer and will be different for every computer. Put the name of the TM drive in the above and keep the quotes.
You'll have to enter your admin password (which you won't see) which is normal.
This was edited by Kappy just for cleanup.
Enable Finder to Show Invisible Files and Folders
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following command line then press RETURN.
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
To turn off the display of invisible files and folders enter or paste the following command line and press RETURN.
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE
Alternatively you can use one of the numerous third-party utilities such as TinkerTool or ShowHideInvisibleFiles - VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

• Are 'read only' items causing my automatic row processing to fail?

I have a form that uses automatic row processing to update my table.
I recently had to add a check to lock down the fields using the read only condition where a record has been 'approved'. So, I turned off all of the fields and hid the update button.
Now they want me to check to see if the user is a manager, and if so, allow them to see the update button, and make a single field on the form modifiable.
I have the user identified as a manager, and can make the field accept the change (a yes/no combo box). Yet when they click the update button, the form just sits there. A branch is supposed to fire on hitting that button, taking them back to the previous report, but it doesn't happen. The source of the combo box in question uses a column on the table, and works fine when the form has all of the fields showing for modification.
I had some validations that I finally set to never fire, thinking that they were failing and just not giving the error messages. I know a bad sql or pl/sql atatement in a validation will cause the form to just keep sitting there doing nothing, and thought it might help.
Several of the various fields are combo boxes, several are text boxes.
I'm stumped.
Shall I keep the regular update button hidden whether it is a manager or not (because it has been 'approved'), and enable a new button that fires off a process to update the one field that the manager may want to change? Does making a field 'read only' always have a detrimental effect on the auto processes I've been counting on? Is that if fact what is happening now?
Thanks in advance for any advice or comments on this.
Clayton

Hi, Scott.
My version is 3.0.0.00.20
I have received info to set up the application, though I have not activated it as yet. I'm reluctant to try to load up the various tables to make it work. It could be done.
My workaround is to that the user (a manager) fires off to another form to show an individual record, and ask if he/she really wants to make this change. On submit, they will be taken back to the original locked down form, and I will update the single field in that process of returning them. This will actually be a plus, in that I expect to show them all of the 'duplicate' entries for that item, and show them that by 'activating' this particular item, they will 'deactivate' the one duplicate that is currently active. Or, if they are deactivating the sole item that is active, that there will in fact be no active items in the system. Convoluted as heck, but they swear this is how they've been doing business with their briefcases and file cabinets of Excel files. I'm surprise they even float at this point (these are ships we're talking about).
This all may be due to the form originally having a next/previous/count process once arrived at my clicking on the edit button of the report of items. All of that has been hidden away, and though the fields exist of the form, they are not used. They only see the current item that they clicked on from the report.
I read up a little on session state, as well as posts with the debug error I was getting. I'm still not on board with the whole issue of 'state'. Items stay as they are until they're changed, no? I suppose that sounds simplistic.
One of the things that caught my eye was several combo box lists that on read only mode, showed [] square brackets. Which, in some cases is okay.
What I'll try to do is set up a public application - for future use if nothing else. I'm going to be working on this for awhile. I have more than a bit of work to do to cleanse the data as well as get rid of the single sign on requirement (I'll assume that I should have to do this) in order to share the app.
I know you're expecting me to have this up and running for you to look at, but I'm under the gun. And they actually like my workaround.
I'll keep everybody informed, one way or another.

• Read Only Columns

Hi,
We have designed a update METADATE type custom integrator to download, update and re-upload data to Oracle Apps. As a part of the integrator we are displaying few extra columns for the end users viewing purpose. The client want us to make such view only columns as 'READ ONLY' and prevent any changes to them. They want such columns to either be greyed out or protected in order to prevent any changes. Is it possible to achieve this using WebADI? We tried updating the READ_ONLY_FLAG column in the table bne_interface_cols_b but it doesn't work as expected. This set-up allows the end user to update/make changes to the column in the excel sheet and throws an error only when the sheet is uploaded, not before that.
Any suggestions/help is appreciated. We are on R11i.
Thanks,
Nitin jain

As suggested, an update statement like below will address the issue in R11i:
update bne_layout_cols
set style = 'mso-protection:locked;'
where application_id = <>
and interface_code = <>
and sequence_num in <>;

• Read-only radio button or checkboxes save as null

Hi,
I have a form with some fields that are editable by 1 group of users and read-only for another group in certain conditions.
Before the header there is a fetch process to retrieve values from tables. So most fields (read-only & editable) are populated including checkboxes & radio buttons.
All users can edit at least 1 field on the form.
When the save button is pressed a PL/SQL process runs to save the data.
The save works if the field is editable.
If the field is read-only and text it also works.
But if the field is a radio button or checkbox a null is saved in the table.
Any suggestions on how to get the PL/SQL to pick up the read-only radio buttons and checkbox values?

Hi,
I had the same problem in my application and I found another solution instead of using two items. I'm using a computation on page processing that makes a select on my table to get the value for the checkbox. I'm doing this with the same condition as my read-only condition on my checkbox item so I can get the database value when it is lose in the submit process.
Also, I found a difference in the html code between the read-only state of the item and the standard state.
Original state : name="p_v07" (7 because it's the seventh item on my page)
Read-only state : name="checkbox"
I tried to modify this using firebug in execution of the page but without success, the problem is still there.

• Can I suppress HTML escaping in a read-only item?

I have an item that is displayed as read-only. The item contains HTML markup. HTML DB seems to automatically escape special characters in the item value.
Is there a way to suppress this?
For example, I have a text input item with the value:
<b>Hello</b>
(that is, it contains the bold elements which I want to output as is).
HTML DB seems to be escaping the item value so I see the bold elements in the browser and what I see in the page source is: &lt;b&gt;Hello&lt;/b&gt;
There doesn't seem to be "escape special characters" / "don't escape special characters" options for read-only mode like there is for "Display As Text" items. Can anyone suggest a workaround?
Thanks,
Eric

Eric - Text input items are escaped on output whether they are read-only or not. But to answer your question generally, APEX does not emit input items of any type to the browser without escaping them unless there is a guarantee that they have been escaped on input, e.g., when passed in through the URL, or that they acquired their value from within the application. These guarantees apply only to non-POSTable item types such as Display As Text (does not save state) items and a couple others. So in short, we observe the rule (which should be observed by app developers) that it is never safe (from an XSS-protection standpoint) to emit a POSTable item without escaping it first.
In your case, can you define a safe item type (Display as Text, does not save state) and set its source to the markup-containing item that you are now displaying as read-only? If so, you can conditionally display only the safe one and hide the other.

• Define read-only authorization for specific field(s) on a form for 11.5.9

Dear all,
Can you pls let me know how is it possible to define read-only authorization access for specific field(s) per responsibility / user on a form in 11.5.9?
For example I want to protect the item master file by assigning for example to users with responsibility buyer authorization to modify the buyer information but to have read-only only authorization on other sensitive fields such as make/buy flag, expense accounts, etc
Through UI Modeller I have only managed to make specific fields on specific forms invisible, or whole tabs invisible, to specific responsibilities but this does not cover my needs as I want them to be able to view the data of the fields but to not be able to update them

Arun,
Almost but not quite.. The example you've given has the person VO at the top level which includes all the id's (City, State etc). My use case is slightly different.
query 1
select org_id, OrgName from x;
query 2
select emp_id, emp_name from y where org_id = x.org_id
query 3
multi-table join (approx 9 tables) to retrieve depts associated to employee
where org_id = x.org_id
and emp_id = y.emp_id
Rather than using LOV's would it be better to create VO's and pass in the bind parameters at run time?

anyone logged into the Windows NT Network with a read only ODBC connection. Have the DB in the new server set to include guest as db_datareader (with only SELECT permission for the securables of each table and view being linked) but when any Windows user not
specifically listed as a SQL DB user tries to use the front end they get an error of:
Microsoft SQL Server Login
Connection failed:
SQL State: '28000'
SQL Server Error: 18456
[Microsoft][OCBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server] Login failed for user {domain\user}.
After closing that pop-up window a server login window appears. Of course, since the guest user is not specifically listed as a user in the DB that fails also. It seems like there should be a very simple solution to this, but I can't seem to find it. I want
to allow anyone logged in on the Windows system (locally) to be able to open the MS Access file (on their work station machine) and run their own (read only; select) queries on the SQL Server database. Any suggestions?
Thanks a billion in advance ----

Thanks for the response Olaf. I have now spent weeks researching this. I realize that using the guest account in most situations is not advised. As mentioned, I have restricted the guest account to allow the db_datareader role only, and have explicitly denied
all other roles, as well as allowing select only, and still have no access for the guest account.
The suggested fix in the second link you provided, of using Windows groups is not plausible for my situation either. We are a scientific field research institution, with a few long term users and lots of users that may have Windows accounts for a few months,
and then they are gone. It would be a nightmare for the network tech to try to keep a group account up to date, and we need to give access (read only, of course) to anyone logged into the system. Realize that the ONLY access of any kind to this database is
thru MS Access ACCDB, using a (by default) read only OCDB connection.
This type of access is used particularly because researchers need to be able to set up their own queries, and the MS Access query interface is particularly convenient for people who are not themselves SQL experts, yet are trying to get some very advanced
levels of output. Putting the database online is not practical because then we are back to the need for a comprehensive query interface, and just picking up general subsets of the data online (from a basic web page search feature) would be out of the question,
since the result set would involve hundreds of thousands if not millions of records.
So - that said - what exactly would you suggest, assuming we don't have the funds to buy a whole new system, and have spent plenty of money with Microsoft's Enterprise level MS Office so that all work stations have MS Access, and Microsoft's SQL Server,
as well as running our network on Microsoft's network software.
