Read variables from an XML file

Hi all,
I'm trying to query valuables in an xml document which is structured quite differently from the examples I've seen around here, and I can't get my head around what to do.
The XML document I've got looks like this;
<universalproperties>
<property>
<name>PropName1</name>
<data>Data for prop1</data>
</property>
<name>PropName2</name>
<data>Data for prop2</data>
</property>
<name>PropName3</name>
<data>Data for prop3</data>
</property>
</universalproperties>
What I need to do is query the XML document for the property name and then return the data associated with that property.  I've just got no idea how to do it.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Is Universalproperties your root node?
FWIW, this is the full code I played with. This builds the XML in situ, so if your actual XML is slightly different you may need to adjust the expression.
$Name = 'PropName1'
[xml]$XML = "<universalproperties>
<property>
<name>PropName1</name>
<data>Data for prop1</data>
</property>
<property>
<name>PropName2</name>
<data>Data for prop2</data>
</property>
<property>
<name>PropName3</name>
<data>Data for prop3</data>
</property>
</universalproperties>"
$Data = ($XML.SelectSingleNode("/universalproperties/property[name='$Name']/data")).'#text'
$Data

    Hi,
    i created a inbound file adapter service which reads data from a xml file and passes it to the routing service and from there updates to the database.....
    (everything created in jdeveloper)
    But i am getting error....it is not getting updated to the database...when i check the database(select * from table) its showing one row selected but i couldnt find the data....
    Transformation mapping also i did...
    i think may be some error in reading the data from the xml file but not so sure.....

    In my case when I use my sqldeveloper I can see data successfully inserted in my target table and also in error table (data that can't satisfy the constraint) .But I was unable to check this by following the above mentioned 10 th step and got this error.

  • How to load a variable from an XML file?

    I need to use an XML file so I can update one variable every
    once in a while.
    Let's say I want to load Variable "foofie" into a flash
    movie, and the XML says that "foofie" is 11.
    What code do I put in my flash file to read what 'var foofie'
    is from an XML, and what do I put in the XML so I can frequently
    update what number is stored in 'foofie'
    Thanks!

    look up XML.load(url) in flash help, it's fairly simple
    in the xml you put, for example
    <foofie>11</foofie>
    if foofie is in a database or some other dynamic place,
    (which I assume, since you want to frequently update to its value)
    you need to write a script, in php for example, that returns the
    desired xml data

  • Reading data from a XML file.

    Hi,
      I am new user to webdynpro and has the task of reading data from XML file.The file is created using XML form Builder and is stored at a location.But my code gives me the path instead of the content in the data.
    The code is :
    try
          IWDClientUser wdClientUser = WDClientUser.getCurrentUser();
           com.sap.security.api.IUser sapUser = wdClientUser.getSAPUser();
    // create an ep5 user from the retrieved user
           IUser ep5User = WPUMFactory.getUserFactory().getEP5User(sapUser);
           IResourceContext context = new ResourceContext(ep5User);
    /Specify the path of ur document here./
           RID pathRID = RID.getRID("/documents/70f51182-84c3-2710-ce91-8d5fbfde713d.xml");
           //RID pathRID = RID.getRID("/documents/hol.txt");
           wdContext.currentContextElement().setSetDisp(pathRID.toString());
           IResource resource = ResourceFactory.getInstance().getResource(pathRID, context);
           InputStream in = resource.getContent().getInputStream();
           ByteArrayOutputStream out = new ByteArrayOutputStream();
           byte[] buffer = new byte[4096];
           int bytesread = 0;
           while ((bytesread = in.read(buffer)) != -1)
               out.write(buffer, 0, bytesread);
           String myData = out.toString();
    /*myFile will containS the content of the document./
           wdContext.currentContextElement().setSetDisp(myData);
           catch (Exception e)
            // wdContext.currentContextElement().setTextdisp("IO Error:" + e.getMessage());
    text data is read from the location but XML data is not read.
    Please help me out.

    hi SriRam,
      For some reasons you are not able to change the value of attribute SetDisp ahich you gave the default value as the path using the following statement
    wdContext.currentContextElement().setSetDisp(myData);
    Remove that line.First try to open the files using creating new window instance
    IWDWindow window =
                wdComponentAPI.getWindowManager().createExternalWindow(
                      "http://<server name>:<port no>/irj/servlet/prt/portal/prtroot/com.sap.km.cm.docs"
                            + "/documents/Public Documents/...."
                            + "/"
                            +<name>,
                      "from km repository",
                      false);
          window.open();
    Then we can be sure that the error is due to reading data using input stream
    Regards
    Rohit

  • Reading variables from a text file into a flash projector exe

    I am using Flash CS4 and my script is in ActionScript2.
    I am developing a flash projector file that runs when a user puts in a cd to guide them through the steps they need to install a program and then kicks off the installer.
    I use fscommand to run a utility that reads the users registry to determine the PCs regional settings and then writes this to a text file in the users %temp% directory.
    I then use the LoadVariablesNum command to read in the text file and get the variables.
    This was working fine when I had the text file stored in a different directory, but when I try and refer to the %temp% directory, I get an Error opening file message.
    Is there anyway to get flash to look in the %Temp% directory?
    Thanks in advance,
    Carol Lutz

    Code-tags sometimes cause wonders, I replaced # with *, as the code tags interprets # as comment, which looks odd:
    ******...*.........To your code: Did you test it step by step, to find out about what is read? You could either use a debugger (e.g., if you have an IDE) or system outs to get a clue. First thing to check would be, if the maze size is read correctly. Further, the following loops look odd:for(int i = 0; i < maze.length; i++) {
        for(int x = 0; x < maze.length; x++) {
            if (input.hasNextLine()) {
                String insert = input.nextLine();
                maze[x] = insert.charAt(x);
    }Shouldn't the nextLine test and assignment be in the outer loop? And assignment be to each maze's inner array? Like so:for(int i = 0; i < maze.length; i++) {
        if (input.hasNextLine()) {
            String insert = input.nextLine();
            for(int x = 0; x < insert.size(); x++) {
                maze[i][x] = insert.charAt(x);
    }Otherwise, only one character per line is read and storing a character actually should fail.

  • EDGE SIMULATOR CAN'T READ DATA FROM SIMULATION.XML

    HI,
    i have installed the SES(10.1.3) and before that Application server 10.1.3 .
    I have followed all the steps given at the following link
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/1013/fusion_middleware/integration/ses/configuringsimulator/configuresimulator.htm#t1
    It works works well till step 16 and edge is restarted successfully , I exit from enterprise manager by logging out and then logging in again for edge
    and then when i click on monitor events then it gives me nothing in the row( no data, no time , no id) just blank row...
    Mean it does not read data from Simulation.xml file
    my file (Simulation.xml) is residing in F:\oracleAS\10.1.3.1\OracleAS_1\j2ee\home\applications\edge\edge\config folder where 'edgerserver.xml' is residing.
    edgeserver.xml contains all driver details i guess.
    Can anyone help me to cope with the problem.
    thanks :-)

    Atlast i have overcome my problem , in order to read data from simulatin.xml file one has to change the "log level" in general settings to monitor and it will work .
    other options for log level are , error , warning, notify and debug etc .
    so change it to log level , then login as enterprise manager, restart edge , log out from emanagaer and again login to edge and click on monitor tab , u r done :-)

  • Read datas from a xml node

    Hi,
    I would read datas from a xml file, in example:
    if the xml file is:
    <FUNCTION>
    <PARAM NAME="x"> 15 </PARAM>
    <PARAM NAME="y"> 20 </PARAM>
    </FUNCTION>
    My program read the value between the xml tags (that is "15" and "20"), but I would read the value "x" and "y", how can I do?
    My program is:
    DocumentBuilderFactory factory = DocumentBuilderFactory.newInstance();
    DocumentBuilder builder =
    factory.newDocumentBuilder();
    Document document = builder.parse("xmlFile");
    NodeList nl= document.getElementsByTagName("*");
    for (int i=0; i<nl.getLength(); i++)
    Node n=nl.item(i);
    Node lc=n.getChild(...);
    System.out.println(lc.getNodeValue());
    Please help me

    You want to get attribute nodes, which are technically not children of the node they appear in. The following method of Node looks helpful:
    NamedNodeMap getAttributes()
    A NamedNodeMap containing the attributes of this node (if it is an Element) or null otherwise.

  • How to read the contents of XML file from my java code

    All,
    I created an rtf report for one of my EBS reports. Now I want to email this report to several people. Using Tim's blog I implemented the email part. I am sending emails to myself based on the USERID logic.
    However I want to email to different people other then me. My email addresses are in the XML file.
    From the java program which sends the email, how can I read the fields from XML file. If any one has done this, Please point me to the right examples.
    Please let me know if there are any exmaples/BLOG's which explain how to do this(basically read the contents of XML file in the Java program).
    Thank You,
    Padma

    Ike,
    Do you have a sample. I am searched so much in this forum for samples. I looked on SAX Parser. I did not find any samples.
    Please help me.
    Thank you for your posting.
    Padma.

  • Crystal Report that reads from an XML file Datetime or Date

    I have a Crystal Report 2008 that reads from an XML file, the source File XML Date data looks like this: 2008-03-10
    But the Crystal Report interpreted by datatime, I need the Crystal Report to look like this: 2008/03/10 (date) not 2008-03-10T00:00:00-05:00 (datatime)
    Look at an example (source file xml, report, and parameter file to execute report) at url: http://www.5websoft.com/sample.zip
    Import the file in the design and will to verify that interpret incorrectly the fields of type date as datetime
    not mapped currently for fields..
    Help.....
    Thanks!

    You could always reformat the field to only display the date portion:
    Format Field > Date and Time tab; choose the date style you need here.
    Or create a formula to extract just the date and use this field in your report:
    date({table.field})

  • How can I read an XML string that's not from an XML file?

    I've got a script I'm trying to setup that communicates over a socket to retrieve different directions from a custom built Java program.  The Java program listens to requests from the Adobe scripting engine (in my case it's a Photoshop script) on a socket and immediately responds with the next set of directions.  These directions are currently in XML format.  The issue I'm having is that I can't parse the XML data since it's entered into a new XML object from a string rather than being read from a file.  Even without the socket code, you can see the issue by doing the following:
    var xml = new XML("<test><data>hey!</data></test>");
    alert(xml.test.data);
    alert(xml);
    The first alert "should" return "hey!" (without quotes, of course), but it doesn't, while the second alert returns what you would expect it to:
    <test>
        <data>hey!</data>
    </test>
    It works fine if read from an XML file, but from a string, like shown above, it just presents an empty alert box when attempting to access "xml.test.data".  Any ideas on how to fix this issue?  Can it be fixed?  Has it been fixed in newer versions (I'm currently using CS4)?
    Thanks in advance for any help!

    Duh... found my error... I was attempting to access the data by referencing the created "root" element.  Since <test> is the very first element tag, it's setup as the root element, which you don't need to reference.  Changing the alert to alert(xml.data); fixed it.
    Now I just feel dumb, lol...

  • At end of tether!  Reading in variables from a text file

    Hi all
    My stress factor has gone through the roof because I am trying to read in from a text file (you may have seen some earlir questions about ArrayLists) it's just not working!
    The code is below. The result is that it's reading in all of the car data, none of the motorbike and only the first line for the services. It's odd and it's driving me insane!
    Here's an example of the data it's reading. There are about 7-10 sets of data per type
    <car><reg>AB04CDE</reg><make>Ford</make><model>Fiesta</model><colour>blue</colour><passenger_no>4</passenger_no></car>
    <service><service_no>13570</service_no><reg>J605PLE</reg><date>15:07:2006</date><miles>20000</miles><part_replaced>brake_pads</part_replaced><part_replaced>front_tyres</part_replaced></service>
    <motorbike><reg>TT05EKJ</reg><make>Triumph</make><model>Speedmaster</model><colour>black</colour><load>20.50</load></motorbike>

    while (moreToRead) {
            String line;
            try {
              line = fileReader.getNextStructure();

    hi jos,
    we have been asked not to use a parser for this assignment. evil
    tutor i think! lolYour example seems to imply that all the <tag> ... </tag> pairs have
    to occur on a single line; if that is so, you can do some cheap
    programming like this:String getText(String line, String tag) {
       int start= line.indexOf("<"+tag+">");
       int end= line.indexOf("</"+tag+">", start);
       if (start < 0 || end < 0) return null; // no <tag> ... </tag> pair found
       // return the text in between the <tag> ... </tag> tags
       return line.substring(start+tag.length()+2, end);
    }kind regards,
    Jos

  • Reading rule sets from an XML file

    Hi all,
    How can I read rule sets from an XML file? I have been given some rules in XML
    format and using those I have to query some content. I am using WLP4.0
    Also how can I code rules in java?
    Thanks in advance.

    You can have the following classes:
    Players class deriving from Vector (or containing a vector), and then
    Player class with attribute 'name'.
    class Players
               Vector myVector = new Vector();
                void addPlayer(Player p)
                      myVector.add(p);
                Player getPlayer(int index)
                      myVector.get(index);
    class Player
             private String myName = null;
             Player(String name)
                    this.myName = name;
             String getName()
                    return myName;
    }Then while handling the SAX events you can do the following:
    class MySAXHandler implements ContentHandler (or whatever the itnerface is)
                 public void startElement(String name,....)
                          Players p = null;
                          if(name.equals("Players"))
                                 p = new Players();
                         else if (name.equals("Name"))
                                p.add(new Player(value));
    }HTH,
    Kalyan.

  • How to read configuration data from an xml file (not web.xml)?

    Hi,
    I want to separate the application specific configuration parameters in a separate xml file and read them as and when they are needed? I know that I can use the wb.xml but I want to separate them in a different xml file because I don't want the web.xml file to be played around later after deployment. If any change is needed then it should be done in the application-config.xml.
    How can I read the parameters from this xml file in my jsp code and also what should be the location of this file if I have
    ../webapps/Root/application
    directoty structure ?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    can you give an example of a property file and also
    it is loaded in the jsp ?Hmm... loading properties in a JSP is not a very good idea. You should do it in a separate class, rather than mixing the logic with the display logic.
    Properties properties = new Properties();
    properties.load(UtilClass.class.getResourceAsStream("config.properties"));
    // Add a try - catch block around the load
    // for IOException...
