Reader and Database

I created a document level javascript database (sort of!) associating numeric codes to strings.

I realise It would be much simpler to have an external database since many other forms need to refere to that list. For now, I just copied the script from one form to the other.
Is it possible to retreive data from an external database to paste into text fields? What kind of database should it be and what method should I use?
Also, is the other way around possible, meaning exporting data to a file which could be retreived later on?

I don't have a solution to the database part, but you might find it easier and more compact to work with a hash table

If this is for use on ONE computer, this could be placed in a startup script, read by Reader when it starts.

I am in the process of expanding a database of chemistry journal articles. These materials are ideally acquired in two formats when both are available-- PDF and HTML. To oversimplify, PDFs are for the user to read, and derivatives of the HTML versions are for the computer to read. Both formats are, of course, readily recognized and indexed by Spotlight. Journal articles have two essential components with regards to a database: the topical content of the article itself, and the cited references to other scientific literature. While a PDF merely lists these references, the HTML version has, in addition, links to the cited items. Each link URL contains the digital object identifier (doi) for the item it points to. A doi is a unique string that points to one and only one object, and can be quite useful if rendered in a manner that enables indexing by Spotlight. Embedded URL's are, of course, ignored by Spotlight. As a result, HTML-formatted articles must be processed so that URL's are openly displayed as readable text before Spotlight will recognize them. Conversion to DOC format using MS Word, followed by conversion to RTF using Text Edit accomplishes this, but is quite labor intensive.
In the last few months, I have added about 3,500 articles to this collection, which means that any procedure for rendering URL's must be automated and able to process large batches of documents with minimal user oversight. This procedure needs to generate a separate file for each HTML document processed. Trials using Automator's "Get Specified Finder Items" and "Get Selected Finder Items", as well as "Ask For Finder Items" (along with "Get URLs From Web Pages") give unsatisfactory results. When provided with multiple input documents, these three commands generate output in which the URLs from multiple input items are merged into a single block, which yields a single file using "Create New Word Document" as the subsequent step. A one-to-one, input file to output file result can be obtained by processing one file at a time, but this requires manual selection of each item and one-at-a-time processing. What I need is a command that accepts multiple input documents, but processes them one at a time, generating a separate output for each file processed. Is there a way for Automator to do this?

With the project all done, i'm preparing for the presentation. Managed to get my hands on a HD beamer for the night (Epason TW2000) and planning to do the presentation in HD.
That of course managed to bring up some problems. I posted a thread which i'll repost here . Sorry for the repost, i normally do not intend to do this, but since this thread is actually about the same thing, i'd like to ask the same question to you. The end version is in AfterEffects, but that actually doesn't alter the question. It's about export:
"I want to export my AE project of approx 30 min containing several HD files to a Blu Ray disc. The end goal is to project the video in HD quality using the Epson EMP-TW2000 projector. This projector is HD compatible.
To project the video I need to connect the beamer to a computer capable of playing a heavy HD file (1), OR burn the project to a BRD (2) and play it using a BRplayer.
I prefer option 2, so my question is: which would be the preferred export preset?
Project specs:
                    - 1920x1080 sq pix (16:9)
                    - 25 fps
                    - my imported video files (Prem.Pro sequences) are also 25 fps and are Progressive (!)
To export to a BRD compatible format, do i not encounter a big problem: my projectfiles are 25 fps and progressive, and I believe that the only Bluray preset dispaying 1920x1080 with 25 fps requests an INTERLACED video (I viewed the presets found on this forum, this thread)... There is also a Progr. format, BUT then you need 30 fps (29,...).
So, is there one dimension that can be changed without changing the content of the video, and if yes which one (either the interlacing or the fps).
I'm not very familiar with the whole Blu-ray thing, I hope that someone can help me out."

Best Practice to Atomic Read and Write a Field In Database

I am from Java Desktop Application background. May I know what is the best practice in J2EE, to atomic read and write a field in database. Currently, here is what I did

As my observation is that, if I have several web request at the same time, I am executing code within single instance of servlet, using different thread. The above method shall work, as different thread web request, are all referring to same "private_static_final_object"
However, my guess is "single instance of servlet" is not guarantee. As after some time span, the previous instance of servlet may destroy, with another new instance of servlet being created.

This is my understanding of the issue (you should research it further on you own to get a better understanding):
I suggest you use local variables (ie, defined within a function), and keep away from static variables. Those local variables are thread safe. If you call functions within functions, its still thread safe. If you read or write to one record in a database using sql, its thread safe (you dont need a transaction). If you read/write to multiple tables and/or records, you probably need a transaction. Servlets are thread safe. You usually dont need the 'synchronized' word anywhere unless you have a function updating/reading a static variable and therefore want to ensure only one user is accessing the static varible at a time. Also do so if you are writing to some resource (such as a file, a variable in applicaton scope, session scope, or resource that everyone uses such as email server). You dont want more than one person at a time to write to it). Note the database is one of of those resources that is handled by transactions rather than the the synchronized keyword (the synchronized keyword is applied to your application only (not other applications that someone is running), whereas the transaction ensures all applications are locked out while you update those records in the database).
By the way, if you have a static variable, you should have one and only one function (synchronized) that updates it that everyone uses. If you have more than one synchronized function, that updates it, its probably not thread safe.
An example of a static variable you would use is a Datasource object (to obtain your database connections). You only need one connection pool in your application and you access it via the datasource variable.
If you're unsure your code is thread safe, you can create two seperate threads that call the same block of functions repeatedly to ensure it works as expected.

My system have actually 1200 tags and when I try to increase the number of tags my system slowdown and not update at requested period anymore. I'm using NI OPC Servers to read data of 4 different PLC's. In the SVE I've created an IO Server to bind variables and all variables are located in a single process. All variables are logging alarms and data. The Log Deadband and Update Deadband are set to 0. My machine is a DELL Precision T5400 with Dual Intel Xeon Quad Core with 4GB of RAM and Windows XP Sp3 installed. Bruno Costa Automation Enginner

A table can exists across multiple tablespaces. A tablespace can consists of several data files. Data files can be across multiple ASM diskgroups. An ASM diskgroup can consists of multiple LUNs. A LUN can comprise of several physical disks on the storage system.
So what EXACTLY is the problem?
What will a magic metric of "20 writes/25 reads" on the EMP table tell you? What would this mean and how would these numbers be applied to make the system better?
In other words - you have come up with a solution that needs write/read rate on a table. You have not told us what problem this solution of yours will address. We need to know the problem - as a solution is only ever as good as the accuracy and detail of the problem description.

Using the Borland Database Engine to read AND write SHARED Paradox Database Tables

I need to read and write Paradox database tables with a C# AT THE SAME TIME AS people using the Paradox tables with legacy Paradox programs interactively.
I think the only way to do that reliably without corrupting the tables is to use the BDE Borland Database Engine.
Does anyone know how to do that? I found this c++ program... But I don't know how to integrate this into c#

I can read the paradox records all day long, that is no problem, it is updating at the same time as the legacy program users..
I also know that the whole thing needs to be updated, but that can not be done overnight.

Being pretty new to programming, I am trying just to read info from Paradox tables with C#. Info is actively being updated from another program at the same time. The program I am trying to write only needs to read data. The other program does use the BDE,
so it is already present running on the computer.
I've been looking at code but just haven't found quite the right combination.

You can use SQL tags from JSTL in your JSPs. I'd recommend JSTL highly. No scriptlet code that way. - MOD

I've been trying to find a simple tutorial of creating a database, reading and writing to it... Can't seem to find anything in my interest.
Does anyone know a good tutorial about this?
Or could anyone just explain this? :)
I want to do simple stuffs, such as reading ints and Strings.
Do you recommend using MySQL or should I use a 2D string array instread?

Learn SQL to create/read/update the data. There's a SQL tutorial at w3schools.com. Decent RDMBS also come along with SQL documentation, have a look at their own homepage.
JDBC is in fact nothing else than an API to execute SQL using Java code. There's a JDBC tutorial here at Sun.com. Decent RDMBS ships with a JDBC driver and JDBC documentation, have a look at their own homepage.

Database Locks: The database system automatically sets database locks when it receives change statements (INSERT, UPDATE, MODIFY, DELETE) from a program. Database locks are physical locks on the database entries affected by these statements. You can only set a lock for an existing database entry, since the lock mechanism uses a lock flag in the entry. These flags are automatically deleted in each database commit. This means that database locks can never be set for longer than a single database LUW; in other words, a single dialog step in an R/3 application program.
Physical locks in the database system are therefore insufficient for the requirements of an R/3 transaction. Locks in the R/3 System must remain set for the duration of a whole SAP LUW, that is, over several dialog steps. They must also be capable of being handled by different work processes and even different application servers. Consequently, each lock must apply on all servers in that R/3 System.
SAP Locks:
To complement the SAP LUW concept, in which bundled database changes are made in a single database LUW, the R/3 System also contains a lock mechanism, fully independent of database locks, that allows you to set a lock that spans several dialog steps. These locks are known as SAP locks.
The SAP lock concept is based on lock objects. Lock objects allow you to set an SAP lock for an entire application object. An application object consists of one or more entries in a database table, or entries from more than one database table that are linked using foreign key relationships.
Before you can set an SAP lock in an ABAP program, you must first create a lock object in the ABAP Dictionary.

Some error in cluster alertlog but the cluster and database is normal used.

i used RAC+ASM,RAC have two nodes and ASM have 3 group(+DATA,+CRS,+FRA),database is 11gR2,ASM used ASMlib,not raw.
When i start cluster or auto start after reboot the OS,in the cluster alertlog have some error as follow:
ERROR: failed to establish dependency between database rac and diskgroup resource ora.DATA.dg
[ohasd(7964)]CRS-2302:Cannot get GPnP profile. Error CLSGPNP_NO_DAEMON (GPNPD daemon is not running).
I do not know what cause these error but the cluster and database can start normal and use normal.
I do not know whether these errors will affect the service.

Use the TEXT_IO built-in functionality in forms or from the database utl_file. TEXT_IO seems to be more flexible because you can read and write to any server/directory you have access to whereas UTL_FILE is limited to the server where the database is located. Hope this helps.
