Reader X on Win7 64-bit: Path Problems cause error

Hi,
Environment
Problem Description
Workaround and Further Issues
Environment
I'm running Windows 7 64-bit and just downloaded Reader X from the FTP - both exe and msi files.
It doesn't make a difference which installer I use.
Problem Description
When I try to run Acrobat using the created shortcut on the desktop or by double-clicking on a .pdf file, I get this error, with the logo behind it:
and then:
and finally:
If I debug, it actually works (with Visual Studio running).
Workaround and Further Issues
Deleting anything Adobe on the PC (AppData), installing, repairing doesn't help.
If you run Reader from the installed folder directly, it works.
If you modify the main shortcut (which doesn't include the working directory) it then works from the shortcut.
Double clicking on any PDF file still brings up the error.
Running the AcroRd32.exe file without path from the windows Run dialog works.
The AppPaths registry setting kick in when running the bare AcroRd32.exe, which allow working directory specification.
HKCR\.extension file associations have no way of specifying the working directory.
Related HKCR\Applications settings also don't have a working directory specification.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee872121%28VS.85%29.aspx
If I remove the path from the executable file in the various areas of the registry to try to emulate that behaviour (of setting working directory through the AppPaths entry), it doesn't help.
I hope this contribution is helpful in solving the issue. In the meantime, I will have to revert to v9.

If anyone else is running Win-7 64-bit and is *not* experiencing this problem, please reply and say so.
Might be a problem with my system instead...

  • HP 2000 - 2c12NR: Removed Win8, Installed Win7 64-bit; Touchpad Problems

    Greetings HP forums!
My name is Bob and I am having an issue with an HP 2000 laptop.  A friend requested I remove Windows 8 from a laptop, and install Windows 7 since he was much more familiar with the old GUI.
I installed Win7 64-bit and am having issues with the touchpad consistently working correctly.  I have let Windows use its generic drivers, and have installed the Win8 Synaptics touch pad driver/utility.  Both drivers produce the same problematic results.  The strange issues I am having are as follows:
    - Touchpad works fine for 5-30 minutes
    - Touchpad becomes inoperable for varying amounts of time; 1-5 minutes
    - Touchpad starts working again, but requires higher than normal pressure to work OR only works on the RIGHT side of the touchpad
    - Touchpad stops working again, and then after swirling/twirling my finger around the touchpad it will start moving itself without any further input to the Touchpad at all.  Everytime it starts moving on its own, it exhibits the same behavior.  It moves only vertically, in  a perfectly straight line, roughly 2/3 the heighth of the screen, and is very choppy skipping up and down; This lasts for 10-30 seconds.
    - After it's done 'ghosting' the cursor up and down, the Touchpad is usable again, but is very finnicky.  It requires excessive pressure or response is very laggy/inaccurate to the touch you are inputting.
    - Typically after a reboot it works perfectly fine for a short amount of time, and then starts acting as I have described above.
I have tried altering any and all of the settings in the Synaptics driver utility to no avail.  I have uninstalled/reinstalled, enabled/disabled the hardware/drivers numerous times.  Each time either drivers are removed and installed it will work fine for a short amount of time and then go back to acting crazy.
I thought the ribbon cable may have been loose, so I opened the laptop up far enough to check the ribbon cable for the Touchpad.  All was well, everything was snug.
At this point I am thinking there is an issue with the Touchpad itself.  While I am waiting for a reply I am going to try reinstalling Win7 since I have exhausted all other ideas I have.
Any and all information is greatly appreciated.
    Thank You,
    Bob Melchert

    *EDIT*
I just started the process to re-install Windows.  Once files were finished loading and the initial install screen had loaded, (where you select Language, Time/Currency Format, and Keyboard input method) the Touchpad immediately started moving vertically on itss own.  Once it stopped moving on its own, I am only able to move the cursor vertically in the spot where it was moving itself; Any input to the Touchpad only allows vertical movement.  This is the first time I have encountered this issue.  Since this is happening with Windows loaded into RAM, I am becoming more certain this is a hardware issue.

    Hello disgrntld,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand there is no audio coming from the computer. Before anything else, I would suggest a manual uninstall and reinstall of the sound driver:
    1. Go into Device Manager, then "Sound, video and game controllers".
    2. Look for the Audio driver. Right-click on it and select "Uninstall". Do not restart the computer.
    3. Restart the computer. It will force the computer to detect the hardware and install an appropriate driver.
Please let me know your results. Thanks!

First of all, to troubleshoot the problem it would help to put some filepath indicators at each point so that you can see what is going on. Also, in your exe having an error dialog "Simple Error Handler.vi" to let you know what LabVIEW didn't like in the exe.
Now, when you run a top level ("Main.vi") and use the "Current VI's Path " in the development mode it returns <Filepath>\"Current path"\Main.vi. So stripping once will get you to  <Filepath>\"Current path" .    Now if you make it into an exe the "Current VI's Path" returns <Filepath>\"Current path"\"Name.exe"\Main.vi so you are "nested" one deeper.
I use the following construct to determine whether the vi is being used as in the development environment or as an exe, the parse the path accordingly, although in this instance it is used to supply different directory names to a little more complex file system.

  • 'Source play' and 'audio-video sync' problems with PE8 on fast WIN7 64 bit computer

I am transferring Hi8 videos, about 2 hours long, to my WIN7 64 bit computer with PE8.  [Dell Mobile Precision M4400 Computer Workstation (Intel Core 2 Duo T9900 500GB/4GB); NVIDIA Quadro FX 770M, 512MB] I seem to have several problems:
First, after importing the file (.avi), I get a message about ‘dropped frames.’
Secondly, when I try to play the video in the source monitor, the audio plays but the video doesn’t; it only shows the first frame [this is after waiting until the video is ?recognized? ]   I can use the shift-arrow key and see that the video is there.
Thirdly, I can play the .avi file in other players, e.g., avidemux or PE pro CS5 on another computer.  There, I see that the audio and video are not in sync; the audio can be up to 300 ms ahead of the video (as determined using avidemux).
    Questions:
    1.  Why doesn’t the source monitor play the video? Is this a problem with PE8 (latest update as of 3 March 2011) on aWIN7 64 bit computer (intel duo core. 3 GHz).
    2. Is the audio-video sync problem the result of the ‘dropped frames?’ How can PE8 correct this? Avoid this? Or, is it coincidence?

"I think you're telling me you're using a backwards compatible Digital8  camcorder to capture your video as DV-AVIs. Is that right?" YES
"Are you using  Premiere Elements to do this capturing?" YES, AS ABOVE PE8
"Go to the File menu and select Properties. It should show a standard DV codec being used for your video and audio."
WMP v12 is dumb. Under properties, media, it says 'video.'  However, avidemux gave me the information state above: video -- Codec 4CC: dvsd, frame rate: 29.971 fps; audio -- codec: PCM, channels: Stereo, frequency: 48 kHz.
    So, back to the Questions:

  • Problems with hp deskjet 870 Cse and Win7 64 bit drivers

I have been using this printer for years without problems. WinXP and Win7 working fine on my 32 bit laptop.
Recently upgraded to a 64 bit laptop and the drivers installed just fine    however the danged thing doesn't print.
Even the 'test print' job hangs in the print queue showing a print error.
Not sure this is related but,
The Windows application log shows a bunch of error messages source 'Bonjour Service' at about the time I was trying on my 64 bit machine:
Task Scheduling Error: Continuously busy for more than a second
    Task Scheduling Error: m->NextScheduledEvent 998
    Task Scheduling Error: m->NextScheduledSPRetry 998
this cycle repeats over and over again
    Task Scheduling Error: m->NextScheduledSPRetry 13728
I notice that many people have been having problems over the years with Win7 and HP printers.
I don't know whether to swear off of HP or windows. So far, I am just swearing AT them both.

    Hello bz2012,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I see you are having issues printing with the Deskjet 870 since upgrading to Windows 7 64-bit. You could attempt to add the printer with an alternate driver.
Installing an Alternate Print Driver in Windows 7 for a USB Cable Connection.
The printer driver you would more than likely be best to use is the 9800. Let me know if this allows you to print.
Using the Print and Scan Dr may also be a helpful means of troubleshooting / resolving the issue. Let me know what the results are, what passes, fails, etc.
    Cheers,

  • Problems installing plug-ins (and even Adobe updates) to Photoshop CS5 Extended on a new Win7 64-bit laptop.Instead, a message box pops up on the CS5 screen saying "could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document."

Problems installing plug-ins to Photoshop CS5 Extended on a new Win7 64-bit laptop.  (Same CS5 and plug-ins installed OK several years ago on a Vista laptop.  Now I'm just trying to migrate everything over to the new laptop.) Even some Adobe updates won't install.  Instead, a message box pops up on the CS5 screen saying "could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document."   Any solution?

CS5's automatic update mechanism is broken, perhaps because it is no longer updated and can't cope with the newer ways of updating.
So this means you will have make a list of the updates that failed, go here: Product updates
    and manually download/install from there.

  • Premiere Elements 11 will not install in win7 64-bit

I am trying to install Premiere Elements 11 on a Win7 64-bit machine. I did it last year on another machine just like it, but now I get an error message saying it won't work in 64-bit. The license is valid and paid up. Can I get a new link to a fresh install file?

if you follow all 7 steps you can dl a trial here:  http://prodesigntools.com/photoshop-elements-11-direct-download-links-pse-premiere-pre.htm l
    and activate with your serial.
if you have a problem dl'g, you didn't follow all 7 steps.  the most common error involves failing to meticulously follow steps 1,2 and/or 3 (which adds a cookie to your system enabling you to download the correct version from adobe.com).

  • Drivers/Utilities CD..XP and VISTA..can I use vista for WIN7 64 bit install?

Drivers/Utilities CD's, that came with the p-35 Motherboard..XP and VISTA..can I use Vista for WIN7 64 bit install, or download the chip set drivers for Awin7 BEFORE the OS install??

    Presently XP 32Bit
    NVidia geforce 8600GT
    8GB DDR2 SDRAM PC6400-800MHz
    Windows 7..waiting to be installed.
    Hello,
I WANT TO DO A CLEAN INSTALL.I have Windows 32 Home XP, I have the Win7 OEM I want to install.
When i bought my MSI mobo, it came with both the drivers and utilities for XP and Vista.   Can I use the chip set drivers and utilities for Vista, until i can go to MSI and download the latest chip set drivers?  When do i install these drivers....before the OS install, or after?
Can I format these drives first, go in the BIOS change to boot sequence from Raptor Boot Drive to the DVD/Rom to boot the WIN7 from, or should I format while installing Win7?
Someone on another forum suggested that 1) disconnect the two droves, then install the OS on the boot drive, and2) before win7 install, make the proposed boot drive (NOT THE DVD/CD ROM the first choice priority for the boot sequence....is this right?
Is it absolutely necessary to unplug the other two drives, while formatting and installing the WIN7 O.S.?  People tell me that there is a chance of the OS installing sometimes on the other drives.
Also, if I want to change the now present boot drive Local disk letter (C) to my storage drive (G) and the other two drive letters, can I do this in manage disks, anytime, or only during windows setup install?
    Thx

I've never had this much trouble hooking up a HDD.
I have two IDE DVD/CD ROMS.  (My RAID MODE was IDE in XP OS, and still is with WIN7.)
           I have three SATA HDD's.
After unplugging the SATA 2TB HDD while I installed the WIN7 OS on the 500 GB HDD (it was on the 74 RAPTOR, but I moved location, and made absolutly sure nothing went on my raptor)
So today I decided to re-hook up the 2TB Storage HDD, and when I did, I went into bios, and to the cell menu, and LOAD ALL DEFAULT SETTINGS, so it could see my newly installed HDD,which I had all my backup Data from the previous HDD. I also checked and the RAID MODE was IDE, and the boot sequence was the WDC 500GB Boot/OS drive, rebooted, then I got that annoying blanked out screen with that blinking cursor, so I got back into the bios, and changed the 1st boot to the IDE Pioneer DVD/CD ROM, 2nd boot to the 500GB HDD, and rebooted again..still got that blinking cursor.
I opened up the Mobo, checked and replugged all SATA, and power cables to the three HDDS, tried it again, then still got the blinking cursor.  Seems no matter what I change in the boot sequence,it never wants to boot properly
    ....AND THEN,
I started with TAB > POST> started WINDOWS, then once it opened up, I went to manage Disks, saw all three HDDs were online and healthy.  Win. Explorer also listed them in that folder, in device manager, it listed all three too.
     The managed window showed this:
    74GB    (system,active,Primary partition)                       Storage
    2TB     (Primary partition)                                           Excessive Storage
500GB  (Boot, page files,crash-Dump, Primary partition)   Operating system
Both the PCI IDE BusMaster and ON-Chip SATA Controller were both ENABLED.
Before I just got online, I tried RESTART, and it opened Windows the usual way,  so I hope I don't have any more problems. It worked fine BEFORE I just plugged in the 2TB HDD back in.
I pretty much did what everyone suggested, except for leaving in the 74GB Raptor when I installed WIN7, which prompted me to format the drive prior to installing the OS.  Also, when I changed the IDE, RAID,and AHC1, to the AHC1 Mode, just before I installed Window7, like a few suggested, I also had problems, so after the install, I went back and changed it back to IDE.  My Floppy was an IDE, but I removed it from my system, and disabled in BIOS, but even a few times I went into Bios and saw that thje floppy was 1st Boot, even though I changed to either the DVD/CD Rom, or the 500GB boot drive.
So what is the preferred boot sequence?

  • Acrobat XI Standard ramdomly crashes scanning from Fujitsu fi6770a on Win7 64 bit

I have a user that a couple of time a day has Acrobat crash when the are scanning 8 1/12x11 2 sided B&W documents in the document feeder and says "Adobe Acrobat has stopped working".  Screen shot and dump file link attached.
    https://app.box.com/s/z60rw8gwe4d9pkk7wh0g

I have been dealing with the same problem, but we are using Win7 32 bit system and the same scanner, since prior to October 2013.  (I only know this because I joined this forum to find an answer and have yet to do so.)
How is it that a product that is so costly only works about 30% of the time.  Trust me when I say, if there was another program that was compatible with the other software I used, the company I work for would no longer use Adobe.  I'm having to scan my documents anywhere from 2-7 times before I can get Adobe to stop crashing.  Sometimes I end up giving up and hoping that the next day will have better results (it generally scans fine for about 30 minutes and then crashes consistently).
I also have different scanning stations, with different users and we are all experiencing the same thing.
Has anyone found a solution?  I'm beyond frustrated and have tried every "fix" listed on this forum.

  • New ALchemy settings for some major games for Win7 (64-bit)...

[color="#ff0000"]Update 2/0/0 - Added Sid Meier's Civilization V: Ok this game is so hard to find in the registry because it uses a completely radically new type of installer that basically is a hybrid installer based on pulling the steam client game updates for Civ V and the data from the actual Civ V install DVD. The definiti've install location is similar to other steam apps are installed @ location C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\sid meier's civilization v. (The blue part is common for the majority of all steam installed games locations. Finding this for Civ V was not so easy, however.
Here is the actual entry you should add to your ALchemy.ini file and is the ONLY location that points to the aforementioned correct install path in the entire HKLM tree that is valid. This is truly a very very unique and bizarre and radically new way to find and detect correct install path strings without resorting to using the GAMEUX path (which is different on everyones computer). This path is indentical for all Civ V installs and therefore the most valid. The ALchemy team needs to address these new radical ways that game companies are injecting the install string into the registry in the future or ALchemy will start to break big time. Notice its the Uninstall path that actually functions as the only correct static install path for the game. Its a dual use path. Very clever!

    The original post:
I was playing around with the D:\Program Files (x86)\Creative\ALchemy\ALchemy.ini file to force ALchemy to run with all the games on my computer. After I changed the reg paths in this .ini file all the games I had on my computer started working with ALchemy running in Windows 7 64-bit. Windows 7 registry paths for some major game titles I play are NOT in the standard location that the ALchemy.ini file has them as which is why they never get registered. I run a 64-bit version of Windows 7 so the path is slightly different then the default ones in the .ini file. Here is what I added/changed and all these games now register with ALchemy and work! Game heading bolds are my addition in this post and not how they look like in the .ini file to help see the game titles better.
I tend to shy away from any GAMEUX registry strings (for example: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\GameUX\S--5-2-837354825-494596859-745999896-00\{AFF227C-B0BB-49A5-8DFF-E87FDB864D}\ConfigApplicationPath) as they may be different for one computer to the next as they look identical to a SID string which changes radically as it is created when the game is installed. The strings should be static so they would appear identical on my computer as they would on yours. Having a string in the install path that looks like above just gives me the creeps that it is not valid. Since I only have my computer to compare this against I am not positi've of this. Just to be sure stay away from GameUX strings that are alphanumeric in nature as they can change from computer to computer or reinstall to reinstall making ALchemy fail. More on this at the bottom of this post.

I left the Preset= in all of them to have default settings. You can change or add the additional options to your pleasure but I find the defaults to work just fine. Here are all the settings for the options from the top of the .ini file.
    ;Creative ALchemy titles
    ;Format/Options:
    ;? [TITLE]
;? RegPath <-- registry path containing string to executable or executable's directory (use this when available; alternati've is GamePath)
;? GamePath <-- Directory to look for app (use if RegPath can't be used)
    ;? Buffers <-- #buffers to use (default is 4)
;? Duration <-- buffer duration (default is 25)
;? DisableDirectMusic <-- disable DirectMusic support (default is False)
;? MaxVoiceCount <-- maximum number of voices to support (default is 28)
;? SubDir <-- subdirectory offset off of path pointed to by RegPath for library support (default is empty string)
;? RootDirInstallOption <-- option to install translator support in both RegPath and SubDir directories (default is False)
Notice if you do a clean reinstall of your games in Windows 7 the game paths are in actuality in the reg path of \Wow6432Node and not just the raw HKLM\Software location due to the way the 64-bit architecture restructures its registry keys to work with 32-bit games (as many of these still are in fact).
The duration and such you can play with but I just left the settings as they were and changed the executable path location that ALchemy needs to find and work with the game is all. If you reinstall Star Wars Galaxies the new Station Launcher will put the game folder under its location and therefore it may be different in your registry. SWG (and Cabal to some extent) is the only game in this list that specifically points to an abnormal location in the registry for the install path due to the way it is launched from a voicechat type of application (The Station Launcher). But at least it works this way, so I don't care too much. I even got my classic game Sid Meier's Pirates! to work with ALchemy, yay! For Cabal I used the uninstall location for the true install path. I assume as long as the path is valid, it will work and it shows up in the ALchemy window, yay!
[color="#ff0000"]Please verify these paths in your registry do in fact have these valid regitry entries using regedit or regedt32 and not just modify the .ini file as I have shown above.
    GameUX strings
There is one game I can not find any verifiable path for in the registry and that's Sid Meier's Colonization =(? If anyone has a clue where this path is stored or how to edit the .ini file to reflect the correct location and work with ALchemy please let me know! I have tried this location:
    [Sid Meier's Colonization]
    RegPath=HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Wind ows\CurrentVersion\GameUX\S--5-2-837354825-494596859-745999896-00\{AFF227C-B0BB-49A5-8DFF-E87FDB864D}\ConfigApplicationPath
    Preset=
...but it does not seem to like the GameUX registry path at all and won't detect it. Probably because its a specialized SID (in other words, the SID will be different on my computer then it is on yours) and ALchemy does not know how to transpose SID registry entries for it to work. GameUX is basically the registry location for all your Games as they are stored under the Start > Game location of your desktop. So if anyone can figure out how to include Direct3D games that are older but do not have a valid installation registry entry please let us know! Of course I could just use the full true path in this .ini file but I am not sure how that would look like and I don't want to break ALchemy for the games it does work with. So I stuck with just valid registry entries.
I own an X-Fi XtremeGamer sound card with version .4.02 of ALchemy running on Windows 7 64-bit as of this post.

Why are you adding new games to alchemy No new games use eax and surround sound should work properly without it. The alchemy team doesnt need to do anything for the future of the program because it's for legacy games. You really don't? need to add wow6432node because it should read it anyways on 64 bit systems. At least it does with the 6 games i have installed. That steam regpath will work on any steam game. you just need to change the app number. About the only games that I have that need it are the old gold source games and far cry because for some reason the original reg path isnt on there. You really should update your alchemy version to 43.06 because the previous versions have problems with windows 7 and some games wont work right unless you change a .dll file to a older one.
A few things about your post.
) Alchemy does not automatically detect the registry path settings as you have been misled for a lot of games you have to manually tell it where it goes. Hence this post.
    2) You are completely missing the point of ALchemy, which is to add the depth of audio in games (yes even new ones) which is lacking without them using just EAX.
    3) ALchemy is for new games not just legacy ones. hence why I have added the keys for both.
    4) I have had numerous ppl tell thank me for posting this thread and their games now are read by ALchemy. If you choose to not follow this thread its you choice. No worries =)
    5) My updater does not show any version besides 4.02 and I dont look for something even newer in some obscure forum post or whatnot. Official beta drivers from Creative tend to be less then stellar in performace (if any indicitation is by how their li've drivers are its even worse in their beta flavors). When I do the auto update it returns:
Status: No updates are necessary for your Creative product.
Your system already has the latest versions installed.

  • Lcat wont work - moved from winxp to NEW win7 64 bit (lr 3 to lr 3.2)

I'm moved my entire LR cat and images from winxp system to win 7 system.  I installed 3.2 on to the new system as well as a drobo.  All my images are on the drobo and LR 3.2 is on the internal solid state drive.
I copied the lcat onto an exteran drive and put it on SSD all by itself, but when i try to "launch" it it wont activate.  I've tried to doubl click it and I've tried to go into the catalog from within LR 3.2.
My question is does anyone know why the cataglog wont work on the new system?  I've tried the most recent lcat, and one saved a week before and both will not work on the new system.
Does the lcat have to go into a specific folder, or is there a problem that I've created by saving it to an exteran portable drive that I'm un aware of?
Any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated . . .  thank you!

When you installed LR on the Win7 system it would have created a Lightroom sub folder in your my pictures folder. see the attached screen shot. The lightroom catalog from your previous system needs to be put into this Lightroom folder. I am using win7 64 bit also so the default location of the Lightroom sub folder should be the same as the screen shot.

  • Safari v5.0.2 for Win7 (64-bit) crashes with Kraken benchmark

my Safari v5.0.2 for Win7 (64-bit) keeps crashing whenever I try the Kraken JavaScript Benchmark http://krakenbenchmark.mozilla.com

Thank you for your response. Yes, you are right to suggest upgrade to 10.4 of course, but I've read stories of how it is slower, especially since I only have 256 MB on my iBook G4.
Sorry to say, but good news all the same for others in my situation, that the new browser Camino 1.6.4 is the best solution to this problem.
I installed Camino on my 10.3.9 and it works great, faster than Safari, better features, about the same feel and functionality, and completely stable with no crashes regardless of which web site I visit, keeping Javascript enabled. (I also tried FIrefox and it crashed on the same sites as Safari.)
So, all you users who still insist on their 10.3.9 OS, switch to Camino and experience crash-free browsing!

  • LR4.4 won't tether to my Canon 50D or 7D; Win7 64 bit

    Hey all,
I had LR3.6, never tried to tether.  I upgraded and now have LR4.4.  I tried tethering my 50D and my 7D, LR wont recognize either camera at all.  EOS Utility works fine.  Same cameras, same cables work on a fresh LR 4.4 install on my wife's laptop perfectly (never had EOS utilites or LR installed previously).
    Both PCs, running win7 64-bit.
I uninstalled LR3 and EOS utilities off the problem PC then restarted, but still no go.  Windows recognizes both cameras on any USB port with any cable, so I have eliminated those variables.  I am at a loss at this point, other than re-installing LR4.  Hoping I dont have to do that and rework several thousand images...
    any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Paul

Some comfort but no solution just a workaround.  Use EOS utility and Autoimport to get your images into LR. EOS utility gives you more control of camera settings than LR as well as live view which I prefer.
Tethered shooting on 7D works fine on this PC W7 64bit (both in LR3.x and 4.4).  I vaguely remember some difficulty in the sequence a while back - I switch on the camera last and wait after everything else is set and connected.
You will not have to rework any photographs if you end up re-installing Lightroom.  Just open your saved catalogue - note where it is first.  The old catalogue should be suggested on any reinstall.
Can you resintall/update the Canon EOS driver as an early and simple step?
