Reading 12-bit DPX files?

I received an image sequence from a client. I go to import these DPX files into AE CS6/Mac and I get an error that AE can't read 12-bit DPX files. (I thought DPX only came in 8 and 10 bit flavors)
Is there a 3rd party plug-in that can read 12-bit DPX?

  • Blender 10 bit DPX Files not importing into AE CC

    Hi all! Back in After Effects CS6 I was able to import DPX files generated from Blender. They were 10bit RGB files like this one:
    Dropbox - 0001.dpx
    I recently upgraded to AE CC (no plugins installed) and I am getting After Effects error: The file header version is invalid. ( 0 :: 8 )
    Please note the only change has been upgrading to CC. These files were generated in Blender 2.68 and worked fine in CS6, but not in CC.
    On Mac OSX 10.9.5 with a GTX 680 and 20 GB of RAM. Any help would be appreciated

    I looked at this file with DPX Plus in Photoshop and found that the header version is listed as "v2.0" instead of the standard "V2.0", note the uppercase. It's true, earlier versions of AE weren't bothered by this. I'll file a bug.
    In the meantime, you could use DPX Plus for AE to read it, because it'll ignore the version in the header.

  • How to read 16 bits at a time from a file.

    Hi everyone:
    I have a homework problem that requires me to read from a file 16 bits at a time, which is a signed value. I have tried using the code below:
    try     {
         FileInputStream fis = new FileInputStream(fileName);
         DataInputStream dis = new DataInputStream(fis);
         System.out.println("Reading "+fileName+"...");
         int x,y;
         bytes = new int [];
         for(y=0;y<height;y++)      {
              bytes[y] = dis.readByte();
              dis.close();
              fis.close();
              System.out.println("Read "+fileName+" Successfully.");
         } // try
         catch(Exception e)      {
              System.err.println(e.getMessage());
              System.exit(1);
    But this code only reads a byte at a time, I need to read 16 bits at a time. Does anyone have any ideas?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    DataInputStream has another method that does what you want.

  • Bridge CC doesn't display dpx files

    We just upgraded from cs5 and there is a huge problem with bridge cc - it doesn't display previews for any dpx files.
    I already exported 10bit, 12bit and 16bit dpx files and none of them display!!!
    This pretty much makes Bridge useless for any postproduction facility.
    We have it installed on 5 separate machines.
    PS, AE and Premiere display the files without a problem.

    Here are three different dpx fotmats exported form AE CC - 10bit, 12bit and 16bit - none of them displays in Bridge, all open fine in any of the Adobe applications.
    Using OSX 10.8.4 and Bridge CC 6.0.1.6 (latest update for CC just appeared last week) and can view the 10 and 16 bit versions without problems in Bridge CC as thumbs and as previews but the the 12 bit version is only a document icon. Select purge cache for selection has no effect
    I also can open and view the 12 bit version in AE so the file itself should be OK but here it ends I'm afraid due to next to none experience with AE. Tried to export again but got lost in the wood of options and a save as command saves as an AE project which also can't be viewed in Bridge…

  • Color to FCP contrast shift (DPX files only...)

    I have a Color sequence which has a mix of raw .R3D files from the RED, and DPX files from VFX work... When I grade, and then send the sequence to FCP, the files which started out as .r3d files, have correct color contrast; however, the clips that are DPX files, seem to have their black levels raised... I am rendering to proRes 4444 quicktime files for everything, and this color-shift is consistent for every clip that originated as DPX files.
    In Color the waveforms and scopes of the DPX sequences, all read correctly (blacks are at 0, and whites at 100), but when brought into FCP, the contrast seems off, and this is confirmed by the scopes in FCP (black levels are consistently raised to around 10 or so...).
    Trying to sort it out, and will post any solutions I can come up with, but any thoughts in the mean time would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
    -Brian

    Thanks for your response JP, however I am not quite sure that it is quite what I need (unless I am misunderstanding you...). I can't adjust the scaling on export, because I am not rendering to DPX, but rather to ProRes 444 (I could adjust each clip on import, but that would render the LUT and current corrections pretty much useless....). Let me try to explain a bit further...
    We are importing the DPX sequences (95-685 Log) as Linear (0-1023), and then using an LUT to correct for the LOG space during CC. For the time being we are rendering with the LUT in place because we are outputting to video (the film-out will come later....). The workflow for the RED footage is pretty much the same (gamma settings in the RED tab are set to PDLog685, and the same LUT is used for CC)... Upon render (to ProRes 444), the RED footage renders correctly, with blacks at 0, however the DPX footage acquires some sort of contrast shift which puts the blacks at around 5-10 IRE...
    For the time being we can apply a quick 3wayCC back in FCP and adjust the black levels for the affected clips back to where they should be, but it would be really nice to know/understand exactly where the problem is occurring...
    Sorry if I misunderstood your response, and feel free to correct me if I did. Thanks!

  • Windows Easy Transfer (WET) Issues with External Hard Drive - "Can't read from the source file or disk"

    I work for Office Depot, in the tech department. Basically, one of our associates was supposed to do a data backup, and re-install Windows 7, then transfer the files back. He used Windows Easy Transfer and compacted everything into a 163 GB file.
    Now comes the hard part. When we try to put it back on his computer ((drag-and-drop to the desktop) which has been wiped back to factory settings using the recovery partition), it stops at 79.5 GB remaining (you know how it doesn't give you a % of completion,
    it just shows how many GB are remaining) and then says "Can't read from the source file or disk" and gives you an option to try again, or cancel. It gets hung up on the same point each time.
    Normally, this wouldn't be a huge issue, but the contents on the drive are his wife's architect blueprints and interior design stuff, along with wedding photos, etc, which are the only copies they have. On top of those, they have court documents and other
    important files that we are unable to access now.
    I wasn't involved with this transfer, so I'm trying to clean up the mess as best I can. I remembered that the customer's wife was Russian, and had some files typed with a Russian keyboard, so on and so forth. I wonder if that's the issue? If not, I really
    have no idea how to manually extract things from a ".mig" file, or how to diagnose what area is potentially corrupted.
    In light of this situation, we tried using "Recuva" to recover the files post-wipe, but everything was corrupted or unable to be opened, and it also extracted and recovered all of the "useless" photos, such as the skype logos, up and
    down arrows for browsers, etc (it was 160,000+ photos).
    Trying to avoid a potential lawsuit, unhappy customer, and costing the company lots of money to see if professionals can get into this external hard drive.
    Other relevant information:
    We used a Toshiba 500 GB (465 GB) external hard drive.
    Customer's computer is an HP Pavilion P6000 Series (Model No. p6520y) running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Service Pack 1.
    Any other information that is needed can be provided, thanks in advance, and hopefully we can find a solution to this issue quickly!
    -John

    I think there's a lack of understanding somewhere.
    "If you even can't start the process, please unplug it from your new PC. Then head back to your new computer and plug
    the external drive back in to your new computer. "
    Unplug from new, head back to new, plug it back in? That doesn't make much sense! Haha.
    I knew what you meant though, somewhat. When I search through the drives after clicking yes (Has windows easy transfer
    already saved your files blah blah blah) I click on the transfer file and it says "Windows Easy Transfer could not open the file".
    Rather than drag-and-drop the file to the desktop, I now tried to double-click on the file itself while it was plugged
    into the computer. It opened, and it started transferring until it was about 70% completed, and then an error popped up saying "WET can't open the easy transfer file, make sure your USB device is plugged in or check your internet connection".
    I checked, and the USB hard drive's light wasn't on. Now, I unplug it and plug it back in, and the light comes back on,
    so I click Retry, and it resets the bar back to nothing and says "Transfer time: 1 minute".
    Rather than continue trying, I clicked "Cancel" instead of Retry, and it says "Your transfer did not complete successfully."
    It says to click "view report" for more information, but there's no "view report button".
    At the moment, I am scanning the External Drive for bad sectors using the check disk tool in properties. It's frozen
    at "0 USN bytes processed".

  • How to handle DPX files for transfer to another party across the country.

    Hi,
    I'm currently working with somebody that is on the other side of the country to do some positing work for my Premiere Pro progect.  There are 31 shots that need some compositing work.  I have already created the DPX files that I will be sending him, however, the total size of all project files is 33gigs.  Now, I decided to zip the files up and send that way.  Then it hit me, when I zipped up the thousands of individual DPX files I will be sending him, the compressed way down, like 8-1 (from 33gb to 7gb). The full project ended up being  I sent him one small batch of files, he opened them, and said they did not seem as though they lost any resolution, but I'm more concerned with color information being lost.  So, my question is this...When I zipped up the files, did I lose anything.  The unzipped back to the appropriate size (roughly 9mb per frame), and he said he could not see any loss in the image.  However, my concern is that when I go to bump up exposure on a couple of shots that were lost, Im going to be dealing with artifacting, and working with a lot less information than the original DPX files contained.
    Did I lose information when I zipped up the DPX files?
    Please help.  I may end up just fedexing him a hard drive full of media, but then I have to worry about shipping a flash drive with my media on it.
    Thanks in advance for ANY and ALL assistance.

    Did I lose information when I zipped up the DPX files?
    Nothing at all.
    ...my concern is that when I go to bump up exposure on a couple of shots that were lost, Im going to be dealing with artifacting, and working with a lot less information than the original DPX files contained.
    Zip only compresses the binary data that makes up the image...
    there is no compression of the image at all.
    After your co-worker completes the composites,
    he should zip them up to send them back to you.
    No worries.  I do this all the time.

  • How can i read data in pagemaker file (PMD) using Visual Studio C# NET ?

    I have bunch of data in .PMD file (Page Maker Document). Which contains mathematical equations and chemistry formulas, I am a .NET developer, and I am writing code for one of the educational learning system. For that I need to read and store mathematical equations/ chemistry formulas from .PMD file into database then display on the browser page.
    Is it possible to read data from .PMD file using C#.NET, do I need to use any external libraries. How can I import .PMD to MATHML (Mathematical Markup language)?
    Any existing examples for C#.NET?
    Please help me regarding this.

    I can't claim to know much about visual C# Net, but I do know a bit about pagemaker. It really can't handle equations. there are a few work arounds involving things like baseline shifts and multiple text boxes, but generally equations were created in different programs and placed in pagemaker in picture or eps files. Either way the chances of extracting usable data out of pagemaker is very slim.

  • Save as a 16 bit TIFF file for Enlarging?

    Question, a local photo developer told me that if I wanted to develop my photos at something like 16 x 20 or larger I should save my photos as a 16 bit TIFF file. Elements 4.0 does not seem to allow me to set the bits at 16, just 8. Is there any truth to what they are saying?
    Also isn't the file size going to be massive when doing this. Most likely prohibiting an upload to their site?
    I am shooting with a Nikon D50 in RAW format. Obvioulsy I have to open it in Elements from Camera Raw as an 8 bit photo to save it in either TIFF or JPEG format.
    Any comments are appreciated.

    Thank you for your comment.
    When I save the 16 bit file in ACR it saves it as a .dng file. When I open the .dng file in Elements again the raw editor opens it as a 8 bit file automatically. This may be all well and good if I can have enlargements made with this file type but not good if what the developer is telling me is true. ???????

    Thanks John,
    one more thing I want to know about installation can I install Hyperion 11.1.2 on XP , as my intel motherboards LAN device and driver is not supported for server 2003/2008 OS and intel recommended to use WIN7/XP os only, I need Essbase only so which files to be download and also can I install it on XP machine,
    I tried for 11.1.3 last year and it worked for essbase (less components of hyperion), just thinking out of certification matrix.

    Considering that your times have non-numerical chars you have no choice but to read them as Strings. Once you have done that you will need to parse the times yourself, ie spilt it into the three separate bits of data. Then you can use the Calendar class if you wish or you can keep a running tally yourself. Just don't forget to tick over seconds when milliseconds reaches 999 and tick over minutes when seconds reach 59.

  • EXS24 read root key from file name only

    Has anyone encountered this with EXS24 in Logic 7? If you set preferences to "read root key from file name only" then EXS reads the root key from the file itself when loading samples. On the other hand if you set them to "read root key from file only" then it reads the root key from the file name. Or am I just imagining this?
    P.S. if anyone from Apple is reading, could you please update EXS24? It's a bit primitive by today's standards.

    Not a direct answer to your question, but if you are doing a lot of sample mapping etc, you may want to check out Redmatica's KeyMap Pro or the simpler Keymap 1:

  • Set the archive bit on files in a folder?

    While viewing files on my Mac from Windows machines on my network, the archive bit seems to be set on the files in soe directories. Setting the archive bit from the Windows machine appears to work, but the bit doesn't really get reset, as a quick refresh of the directory shows.
    Is there a way to (re-)set the archive bit (or any of the read/hidden/system/archive bits) for files on a drive that is neither NTFS nor FAT32? Does OS X allow for the setting of these bits?
