'Reading' PDF into Flash Movie

All,
I have a client who is looking to have a 'configurator'
developed in Flash. What it needs to do is to 'read' a vector
graphic which is uploaded to the web server in PDF format into the
flash movie for manipulation. The manipulation may include scaling
the image size or rotating the image.
Upon completion of manipulation of the image the user would
submit the results of the manipulation which would pass parameters
back to the application server/database which would allow my
customer to print the resulting image in volume.
I guess the question are as follows:
Can you read the vector graphic from a PDF and pull it into
a Flash movie?
Can a configurator of this type be built?
Not only do I need to know IF it can be done, I need to
subcontract someone to do the work. I would also need to integrate
this into the rest of the application which will be ColdFusion 7
and Oracle 10g. Any takers, please email me.

Why can't I import a PDF into Flash?

I already submitted a feature request on this, so you don't need to tell me to do that.
Does anyone know of a logical reason why Flash can't import a specific page of PDFs like Photoshop and Illustrator can?

Hey, thanks for that tip. It does work, however what it does is it converts it to a bitmap. It's not live vectors and text. Also, it will only give you the first page of a multipage PDF. Illustrator and Photoshop give you a dialog asking which page you want.
So right now, I open in Illustrator and then copy and paste into Flash. Flash has an Illustrator importer with options for the vector and text. It seems like a simple thing to support PDF natively.
The method I have to use takes more time because I have to manually create a back page image and when I paste I have to move it into the right place, etc.

Originally, i posted my question in french. So i will try to
convert in english, but my english is poor.

So, my problem : i can import some PDF files with Flash MX
2004, but i cannot do the same with Flash CS3.
When i import (import in the scene - Command+R) the PDF file
in Flash MX 2004, i got the vectorial logo correctly and the text
as a text.
But when i import (import in the scene - Command+R) the same
PDF file into Flash CS3, there is a problem. At start, i cannot
click the PDF file, i have to choose "all the files" to can click
it. Then i click it and there is a pop window appearing, talking
about "importing video". But my PDF is not Video… And at the
end, the result is a poor jpg image of my PDF, not the vectorials
that i would like.
So why the old Flash MX can do it easily, and the recent CS3
can not ?
What i have to do ?

Jusqu'à peu, j'utilisais Flash MX 2004 et quand je
faisais une importation dans la scène, je pouvais importer des
fichiers PDF, et j'obtenais en quelques dixiemes de secondes,
l'importation du contenu (en général quelques logos en
vectoriel et du texte). Léger, simple, rapide, efficace !
Et puis j'ai installé la version CS3 Professionnal, et
là c'est la débacle.
Quand je fais importation dans la scène, et
sélectionne une PDF (déjà il m'a fallu aller sur
"tous les fichiers" pour le dégriser) il me sort une usine
à gaz dont voici quelques détails.
- Il commence par m'ouvrir une fenêtre "importer de la
vidéo" me demandant de sélectionner si ladite vidéo
est sur mon DD ou déjà "déployée" sur le web.
(Mon fichier PDF n'a rien de vidéo, c'est une image fixe, nom
de xxx).
-Si je continue, il me demande "comment je veux la
déployer ?". 5je ne veux rien déployer, je veux juste
importer 2 ou 3 vecteurs et du texte !)
- je lui dis de "l'incorporer dans le swf". Il me demande
comment je veux incorporer la vidéo. (C'EST PAS DE LA
VIDÉO, t'es sourd sale bête !!!)
- je lui explique que le "type de symbole" est graphique
(j'ai le même résultat si je mets clip) et il me demande
le codage.
- si je décoche "coder la vidéo" il refuse de
continuer, et si je le coche, il m'importe une espèce de jpeg
atroce, pixelisé à mort et inexploitable (tout du moins
pour l'usage que je compte faire).
Donc ma question est "est-ce que j'ai raté un
épisode ?" (oui, plusieurs, certes, mais de là à
changer complètement l'histoire, faut pas abuser) et la
suivante c'est surtout "comment faire pour importer convenablement
mes fichiers PDF qui ne comporte que quelques logos en vectoriel et
du texte, et le tout fixe fixe fixe, rien à voir avec de la
vidéo ?"
En attendant, je ré-installe Flash MX pour avancer un
peu, mais je ne peux pas croire qu'une fonction primordiale soit
supprimée, comme ça, sans remplacement.

Upload local PSD or EPS file into flash-movie at runtime

Hi there, I would like to upload a local PSD or EPS file into a flash-movie at runtime. I'm sure the data will have to be encoded into a PNG file for it to be displayed properly in the movie to include any transparency. Any ideas? I can't find an EPSEncoder or PSDEncoder. Thanks.

That's a bumpy road, especially considering the rapid pace of PSD evolvement. You can always find a disgruntled coder trying to deal with the process of unpacking PSD but if you look there's some older libs still out there trying to do it, YMMV. You really need to keep the PSD simple however.
I remember a while back AlivePDF could read EPS files, although I'm not sure to what extent. Might be worth a try.

Importing multiple images into flash movie as a movie

I have about 200 images that have been rendered for me frame
by frame, how do I put this into flash as a movie? I don't want to
do this manually as it would be a complete waste of my time.

you can import them as an image sequence, then create a movie
clip out of it. File-->import-->import to stage.. Then select
all the images, and it something should pop up asking if you are
trying to create an image sequence, select yes.

Reading Querystring into FLASH variable

I can't believe I can't make this work. I've even done this
in the past, but everything I try, fails.
i want FLASH to read the querstring value from the address
bar, apply that value to a variable, and be able to use it. I've
read the articles all over the net about grabbing the QS value in
the page that loads the SWF and sticking it into the embed and
movie tags as well as the ones about using PARAM=FLASHVARS etc.
can't make it work.
I can grab the QS value in the .asp page that loads the SWF,
but I can't for the life of me pass that value into FLASH. Can
someone please give me two things:
1. whats the most effective/efficient way to pass the
variable
2. the syntax for assigning the value to a variable in FLASH

'FlashVars','galpick' to the AC_FL_RunContent block

querystring item I need to pass in. In this case it is g=2. This is
working...when I view the source of the ASP page, the embed and

from what the code tutor said, this should grab the param
passed by flashvar and write it to the variable galvar
Then I put a dynamic text box on stage and gave it an
instance name of galpicker and added this code to the FLASH file:

When I load the page on the server, the text box reads
undefined.

Variables into flash movie - Urgent help needed, please

Is there a way to open another pdf via a button in my (pdf embedded) flash movie?

My Acrobat 9 pro pdf, contains an ActionScript 2.0 swf, added via the Flash tool, on the multimedia toolbar.
The Flash file contains an animation introducing a collection of linked pdf files.
At the end of the intro a button appears, which when clicked, should replace the current pdf with one of the linked ones.
Is it possible to do this inside actobat?

Need help inserting flash movie into article...

I inserted video into flash movie. I loaded the .swf & .fla files onto a server and went into the properties in the flash movie and pointed to the server to pull the .fla file & the movie controls .swf file. I can preview the movie in flash with no problem.
I am wanting to use the object code that was created as part of the .html file that was generated by flash and insert this into an article to display the video. I path the .swf file in the object code to point to where it resides on the server but the video will not play using just the object code. Is there a way to do this using just a object or embed code without the need for scripts?
(I am using CS4 version)

If the swf file does not reside in the same folder as the html page that loads it, then if the video is dynamically loaded into the Flash file, chances are the targeting in the swf needs to be adjusted. If the swf files just targets the video by its filename alone, try putting the video file in the same folder as the html file and see if it gets loaded.

Flash movies made in keynote are not working in firefox

I have just finished a 65 page iwebsite at

it is a card reading with a flash movie - made in
keynote for each card. It looks beautiful in
Safari but in firefox I get a blank white bit
instead of the movie. Help! I would also love
comments on the site! Karen.

I really like what you did with flash and I was trying to do something similar using keynote but I was exporting to a podcast instead of flash and it was never working right. I now thanks to you might try to do it in flash.
As far as the other browsers are concerned you might ask the question on the keynote forum as well perhaps one of the experts there will have another idea as to why it does not work. In the mean time keep positive thoughts and perhaps safari will become the new ie since it has been released to windows.

Adobe flash player and reading pdf files.

     I've recently been having issues with Safari reading online pdf files and loading up sites using adobe flash player.
     I've somehow tracked down a temporary solve by going into Safari's "preferences", then the security tab.
     Where it shows "internet plug-ins" I have it checked so it can load adobe flash. But when it comes to reading pdf files (adobe reader)
     I have to uncheck "internet plug ins". So in turn I can read the pdfs, but not use adobe flash player.
     There seems to be a conflict between the adobe reader and flash player that I can use both at the same time.
     Any suggestions on how to correct this issue?
     Here's a screenshot of what I have. And if I have to delete one of these plug-ins how can I do this as I don't see any options to do so.

Back up all data before making any changes. Please take each of the following steps until the problem is resolved.
Step 1
If Adobe Reader or Acrobat is installed, and the problem is just that you can't print PDF's displayed in Safari, you may be able to print by moving the cursor to the the bottom edge of the page, somewhere near the middle. A black toolbar may appear under the cursor. Click the printer icon.
Step 2
There should be a setting in its preferences of the Adobe application such as Display PDF in Browser. I don't use those applications myself, so I can't be more precise. Deselect that setting, if it's selected.
Step 3
If you get a message such as ""Adobe Reader blocked for this website," then from the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
and check the box marked
Allow Plug-ins
Then click
Manage Website Settings...
and make any required changes to the security settings for the Adobe PDF plugin.
Step 4
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:

In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.

Step 5
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it, if it's present. The same goes for a plugin called "iGetter," and perhaps others — I don't have a complete list. Don't remove Silverlight if you use the "Netflix" video-streaming service.
Step 6
Do as in Step 4 with this line:
~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari.

Can PDFs be loaded into a movie clip?

I'm trying to make a bit of a digital magazine by taking PDFs
of our print version and loading them into a flash movie where the
user can flip through the pages pretty much like a photo gallery.
Can I do this or will I have to convert them to JPGs and provide
links to download the PDFs if they want to print?

Passing multiple session values from cold fusion into a flash movie

Hello all,
I know that to pass multiple variables into a flash movie
you could use the embed tag like this(with the & between each
variable):

Now to pass a single session variable from coldfusion in i
did the following; which worked:

Note that i had to use the cfoutput tags to get the value
stored in the variables. Now; i tried to do the same thing for two
session variables and the second one does not get read in. Here was
my code:
