Really stupid question - Migrating from 6i to 11g
Hi all,
I'm a developer that have been working with oracle since Forms 3, right now I use Forms 6i and I would like to know what I need to use Forms 11g. I understand this new environment is web based, but to start developing and deploying, what I need? for example if I buy the Oracle Forms & Report 11g, I also will need the OAS? or just with Forms and Report I could deploy (somehow) the application?
Please don't flame me, I just want to understand how this works now.

As my old college profession used to say - "The only stupid question is the one that doesn't get asked!" Forms 11g only supports web deployment. This means you will need the OAS with the Forms and Reports Services installed as well. Typically, the setup is three tiered ( 1 server = Database, 1 server = Application Server, 1 server = Infrastructure server ). You don't have to set up the technology stack multitiered - all three could reside on the same server or you could have the all three on the same machine but is not recommended. I would at least have the database on a server seperate from OAS.

After Migrating from 10g to 11g Geeting problems with Guided navigations and section navigations not working.
And we are getting the following error <<odbc driver returned an error (SQLExecDirectW)>> where we have used navigations.
In 10G we have Guided navigation Reports to display the Reports links and intermediate reports for conditionally displaying the Dashboard section(Reports) but after migrating to 11g Guided navigation reports and conditional reports are not working..
We know that in 11g section navigation replaced with conditions and Guided navigation replaced with action link.. but
do we need to recreate those reports in actions and condition or is there any work around avoid reworking.Hi Both,

To start the wizard version of the Forms Migration Assistant:
1. On Windows systems, set the environment variable FORMS_PATH:
SET FORMS_PATH=%ORACLE_HOME%\forms
On UNIX systems, set the variable FORMS_PATH as in the example below:
setenv FORMS_PATH $ORACLE_HOME/forms

In Windows, from the Start menu, select ORACLE_HOME | Forms Developer |Oracle Forms Migration Assistant (GUI Mode), or at the command line, start the conversion utility by entering: frmplsqlconv.bat mode=wizard.
or
in UNIX, enter frmplsqlconv.sh mode=wizard.
The Conversion Wizard Welcome dialog displays.

Difference in behavior of sql and pl/sql after migrating from 9i to 11g
after migrating our database from oracle 9i to oracle11g, the developpers are worry that the behavior of the queries and pl/sql procedures/functions will change
example :
in 9i, select salary,count(*) from emp group by salary, it will display the rows sorted by salary
in 11gi, select salary,count(*) from emp group by salary, it will display the rows not sorted by default, we have to add the clause order by salary.
somebody could give the list of other difference in behavior (SQL and PL/SQL) agter migrating from 9i to 11g
Thanks a lot.Tell your developers: garbage in - garbage out. In relational databases only ORDER BY ensures row order. If your developers relied on GROUP BY implemented by SORT and therefore returning ordered rows they had to realize code they wrote is Oracle release dependent and sooner or later code would require changes. And that "sooner or later" is now reality. In newer versions ORACLE can do GROUP BY via SORT or via HASH. And if it is done via HASH - don't expect ordered results. So tell your developers "payback time".

What Transparent Gateway (TG) 11g configuration steps prevent the following errors?:
a) ORA-12704: character set mismatch
b) ORA-02070: database <DB_link_name> does not support SYS_OP_C2C in this context

The current 9i TG works with the existing views and packages. These same db objects will not compile using the new 11g TG.
The db objects are on an Oracle 10g database linked to an SQL Server 2008 R2 database.
Since the 9i TG works I assume a configuration to the 11g TG will get it working same as before. But what...

I'm avoiding the known workaround to refactor the VIEWS and PACKAGES to contain CAST() statements to explicitly match the data types. A server side fix to the 11g TG is preferred.

A really stupid question from newbie...
hello all,
i am very new to java and i am trying to build a j2ee application...
rite now....i need to let my app communicate w/ an outside program thru' XML..
i had just learnt many thing about java w/ xml and i decided to use the XMLEncoder... it seems quite simple to use...BUT i have no idea on how to send/receive these XML files...i had thought of using socket connection, but i just found out that an EJB wouldn't allow socket networking... i bet this must be quite a stupid question coz i found nowhere teaching me this...=P
if u know about this, pls point me to some relevant docs / sites....i am anxious to learn about it...

In a Messaging system you will need message producers, and message consumers. To enable two-way communication, you can setup both the EJB and the client to handle both. When a message arrives at the consumer (or subscriber if you like), the JMS Service invokes the onMessage method. So you should implement your logic in the onMessage method, for example inspect the XML content, and act upon its content.

No problem, the amount of information to read can be quite overwhelming. Using JMS is just a suggestion, and might be considered overkill for your application. If you're using an IDE, like Sun ONE, creating a message driven bean is easy, and can be tried out, without too much hours passing.

[Migrating from 6i to 11G] HTML viewer
Hi,
There used to be a program to display the output of a report in 6i. When the report was displayed, it used page breaks (ESC characters) to allow the user to view the next page and print a range of pages from a report.
In 11G, these control characters are not interpreted by Internet Explorer:

So how could I migrate the printer definition files in order to get after page control in 11G?
Many thanks for your help.As my old college profession used to say - "The only stupid question is the one that doesn't get asked!" Forms 11g only supports web deployment. This means you will need the OAS with the Forms and Reports Services installed as well. Typically, the setup is three tiered ( 1 server = Database, 1 server = Application Server, 1 server = Infrastructure server ). You don't have to set up the technology stack multitiered - all three could reside on the same server or you could have the all three on the same machine but is not recommended. I would at least have the database on a server seperate from OAS.

Error while executing Report migrated from 6i to 11g

We have migrated forms & reports from 6i to 11g.
Most of the reports work fine but we are having issue with very few reports.
Let me explain the issue here:
We have a Form that Runs a report.
The Report has a PLL which loads a C library and calls a C Function. [using ORA_FFI]
The C Function which is called has embedded SQL in it.
The Report Server Engine crashes on encountering the first Executable SQL statement. [A Select or Insert]
Need help to resolve this as we have tried a lot of things and not been successful.

If you just want to execute the report in web, you can do one thing.
Go to Query designer of your relevent system.
Open the Query which you want to execute in Web.
Then in the Query tab(first one) in the drop down list you have the Option 'execute'./ the 5th Icon in the Query designer screen.On clicking this it will open a new window( Internet Explorer) and prompts for your system credentials.
Upon providing them the query start executing if it deosn't have any selections, else selection screen appears.
You can save the link and can use this when ever you want to execute the query.Use it in the BW system environment's Intrenet explorer only.

Application has problems when migrated from 10g to 11g
Hi there,
I am hoping someone can shed some light on a problem I have in moving an application from Oracle 10g to Oracle 11g. The app works fine on 10g (uses Apache webserver with PL/SQL module, and APEX 3.1.2.00.2), but on 11g using the embedded web server and APEX 3.2.0.00.27, it doesnt. Most of the app works fine, but there are a couple of pages that provide the ability to add child rows to a parent/child relationship, where the parameter passing mechanism from one page to the next appears to suffer from some sort of corruption. I have traced this using the "session" and "debug" buttons on the developer interface, which show that the values of the parameters get changed inexplicably, when branching from one page to the next - even when the page is actually branching to itself.
I am using the "Set these items, "With these values" fields in the branch, and have verified that the correct values are being associated with the correct items in the application builder. But while this does work correctly under 10g, with 11g, the wrong values end up being passed. Just prior to the branch the set of parameters have the correct values, but immediately after the branch, one of the values is NULL, another has the value of a different item, and a third has a totally random value - I have no idea were it comes from!
I migrated the application from 10g to 11g using the APEX application developer's Export/Import options. There have been no other changes. Should this have worked? If so, any ideas what might have gone wrong?

Sid.Well, I managed to solve this, but not in a way that makes much sense.
In desperation (I had tried almost everything else!) I changed the value of "Cached" in the page settings from "No" to "Yes", and ran the app, but the page didnt render correctly (in either Firefox or IE7) - in fact all that displayed was the developers toolbar at the bottom of the page. I changed the value of "Cached" back to "Y", ran the app again, and hey presto - everything worked fine! I actually did this a second time with a fresh import of the app from 10g, just to be sure I wasnt seeing things. I wasnt!
There was just one further issue - everything worked fine apart from this section of code in a page process:-

Error ORA-24247 after migrating from 10g to 11g

After a migration from a 10.2.0.3 (32bits) database to a 11.2.0.3 (64bits) database, we are facing a problem related to the UTL_SMTP package. I vale already created a ACL, as you can see below:

I had the same issue, well multiple issues, with this at first. You should find the solution in one of these links. Make sure you have done each step in the lists and it will work.

Table getting clipped after migrating from 10g to 11g
Hi We migrated our application from 10g to 11g, our application got converted to a trinidad application, skin details are follows:

The problem is when the page loads, the table in the page is shown in a small box (please check the image: http://files.oraclecorp.com/content/AllPublic/Users/Users-J/jaya.battaramvenkatanaga-Public/anonymous/tableclipped.JPG), I am not sure if this is skin problem or layout problem. Please let me know if there is any correction in skin details given above, other wise if lay out is the problem, please provide any documents regarding trinidad layouts.

I think it's a layout problem, the table component or the outer component around the table is set to some default width value (300px?). Try setting the width explicitly to something larger, or see if you can use a stretchable layout component around the table.

Query performance while migrating from 9i to 11G
Hi,
We've one production application with version 9.2.0.6 and migrating to 11g release.
At present we're having a lot of queries in our 9i database which are using the cost based optimizer.
Just wanted to check if we move all the cost based queries from 9i to 11G, will it still work in the same way in 11G as well or do we need to have some check/tuning machanism on all those(or some) cost based queries?

DeepakYes you should test as much as possible, also gather fresh stats.
Off the top of my head, the column endpoints (the low and high values recorded in the table stats) and subpartition statistics were ignored by the optimizer prior to 10.2, and it can make a big difference when it starts using them, especially if the stats are out of date as then many partitions start looking empty to the optimizer even when they are not.
Once you have set up an 11g test system, you might try capturing a SQL Tuning Set and running it through the SQL Performance Analyzer (new in 11g), perhaps comparing performance with optimizer_features_enable set to 9.2.0.6 and 11.2.0.2. SPA executes all the cursors in the set and gives you a detailed report on what improved and what regressed etc.
Workload Replay is the other component of Real Application Testing. It lets you capture the entire workload on the database and play it back on a test system. In theory this is pretty cool, although my experience with it so far has been that it is so complicated to set up (and buggy) and requires so much control of the replay environment that we haven't been able to make it work yet and frankly I'm a bit fed up with it. Don't let me put you off though.
A patch is available from Oracle to enable workload and tuning set capture in 9i for replay in 11g - see Metalink note 560977.1. -
