Recapturing video on clips with smoothcam

As recommended in other topics about Smoothcam, I have exported a short clip as a Quicktime movie, imported it into my project, edited it into the timeline, and applied the Smoothcam filter.
The results look great!
My question is this: If at some point I need to recapture footage, will I need to keep track of exactly what I exported and manually repeat that process, or will FCP keep track of the reel, timecode, etc information and be able to recapture, and re-render the clip automatically?
I looked at the Item Properties>Logging info, and it seems that all of the info is a part of this new clip.
I just want to be sure!

You cannot depend on FCP's terrible media management system to do anything except fail.
It will easily recapture the footage for you upstream of all nests and processing. Once you nest or modify a clip with speed changes and the like, all bets are off.

  • Is it possible to play videos or clips with the appletv from an Time Capsule direct without other hardware?

I want to play videos, movies and music-clips (either mp4, other formats or out of an itunes-db) on my appletv without using other hardware than the apple tv an the Time Capsule (except the tv ;-) ). Is it possible to stream direct from the Time Capsule? With other and even cheaper NAS-Storages is it possible, eg. with the ps3 ...Thanks for help.

The TC from the day it was introduced until today.. has got a bigger hard disk and gained dual band wireless.. but nothing substantial.. it is not a NAS and has never been more than a target for TM mostly laptops as any desktop Mac can have an external drive for backups cheaper and faster than TC.
Many people were disappointed that Gen4 was a nothing upgrade. it is just a Gen3 with a different wireless card. Don't know if there will even be a Gen5 as Apple seems to see Cloud as the answer for remote storage. I would not be surprised if it was dropped completely. But who knows.. Apple sure don't let any secrets out of the bag.
And for the AppleTV 3 there is no JB or other things possible at this moment?
Not yet.. we are awaiting as some major effort is being expended. There is a hack just recently for the ATVv2 with v5 of iOS.. so the v3 may not be far behind.. v2 are commanding high prices at the moment on ebay though.. near to double purchase price when they sold out before v3 arrived.. as people discover their TV watching plans are now in tatters. Or their library of movies is no longer accessible.

  • Walking characters, multiple video tracks/clips with a green screen

I'm pretty new to Final Cut Pro.
    Here is the scenario:
    -I have three characters (puppets).
-Each are recorded on a separate video track.
-Each are recorded with a green screen for the background.
-They are all walking in the same direction.
Question: How do I have all three characters walk along the same path on the same video? I have layered them one on top of the other and have tried to mess around with the different settings (including: Mask Shape filter; cropping the clip). However, they either walk out of the clip or there is not enough room between them with all clips playing at the same time.
Is there some way to isolate the character and their movements?
(P.S. I need them all to be of the same opacity in the end)
    Thanks for your expertise.

    1. I have three characters moving quite a large distance. I am trying to fit all of this movement into one clip and not have the video clips overlapping (I am also dealing with puppeteers in the background, so there is a lot I still have to edit out of the background using Shake).
Good luck on Shake but creating a mask and then processing the key is easy in Motion.
    TylerC_Edit wrote:
I'm not sure what you mean exactly by "executing the keys".
Masking, tweaking, processing, rendering. If you set up each puppet as a separate project in Motion, you can successfully execute on of the keys and then apply the same settings to the other two.
    TylerC_Edit wrote:
And yes, I need to figure out what it means to export with the Alpha.
Exporting the movie removes all processing so all you're doing is stacking up three puppets moving against a transparent background. Each can be scaled, positioned, keyframed, and have interactive shadows applied to it without requiring the chromakey to be process first. Huge timesaver.

Motion requires some pretty hefty graphics hardware. You must have at least a 4870. But you have not specified in any of your posts what your format is.

I have video clips with 4 channels of audio, I can only hear audio recorded on channel one, how do I hear the other channels......?

What version of Premiere Elements and on what computer operating system?     Elements 13 on Windows 7
What is the brand/model/settings of the camera that recorded these videos?        ony  PMW 320
When you import them into your Premiere Elements project, what does Premiere Elements Properties for that import give for
the audio description in the way of number of channels? If you open the Audio Meter (Window Menu/Audio Meters) and you play back
the video in the Premiere Elements Editor, how many channels does the Audio Meter display?
I just drag and drop video and when playing back only channel 1 will appear
What is your intended export for this video in terms of audio as well as video compression and formats?    MP4
I think you can only use audio if it's recorded on channel 1 or it does not recognize it.

  • Does version 12 support producing video clip with AMR audio codec?

From some documents i used as reference to proceude some videos for my phone Premiere Elements 8 can produce video clips with AMR audio codec. I bought today the Premiere elements 12 but I can not find a way to set AMR audio codec for my video clip. Only AAC audio codec seems available.   Is it possible to add AMR codec to 12 version?

    Neurona17
Adobe typically supports only current version, and, if you purchased from it, is strict on "within 30 days of purchase": for money back on that current version purchase. I do not believe such a thing as a "change the license for other earlier release such as 8 or 9" exists at Adobe. But, you could ask. If you wish to purchase one of those earlier versions that supports AMR export, you might still find some online.
Is the before import conversion of AMR to WAV a viable alternative?
    You wrote
Unfortunately so far I have not been able to generate any useful video clip for my system with this 12 version.
Is this in regard to the AMR requirement or to any video without the AMR audio?
Online I have seen that there is a download for the AMR audio codec. Does your system now show that you have such a codec installed on your computer. If not, I am not sure if download of this codec would place it in the Premiere Elements Publish+Share export settings choices, similar to import of some .avi video codecs. (Sometimes 3rd party codecs can create problem, so proceed with caution if you pursue that AMR audio codec idea.
Please update us on your progress when you get a chance.

  • Insert a video clip with audio in a sequence

I've created a sequence out of three subclips and renamed and saved it.  When I try to add another video clip with audio to the end of the last subclip in the sequence it only adds the video, not the audio.
    Please advise

Edit the video with sound to your timeline, when you are ready to replace the video with pictures, lock the audio tracks by clicking on the locks at the left side of the timeline:
Clicking on the locks will lock the tracks and will protect them from being affected when you replace the video with pictures.
Remember to unlock them when you want to edit or add more audio to the sequence.

  • Capturing Video Clip with iSight(?)

Is it possable to capture a video clip with the built in iSight?
Ypo be played back in Quicktime, etc?

    Hello polevod & Hilton,
Nice response polevod. And Welcome to Apple Discussions!
For Hilton, in addition to the above suggestions, I personally use EvoCam for capture of our family weekend iChat's. It's a try before you buy app that is well worth the $25 registration fee. Been in use for almost 2 years and all app's should be so simple to use. Good Luck, and be sure and check back to let us know how you make out.

  • Having a hard time with Smoothcam

I got shake last week and I am still learnign it but really like it. I have included a photo at this link to help better explaine my problem.
    http://s111.photobucket.com/albums/n159/larswik/?action=view&current=Shakewindow .jpg&refPage=&imgAnch=imgAnch1
Long story short: I imported 2 clips into Shake. 1 clip is a handheld camera shot of a piece of metal laying in the sand. The second is a still image that was created in Cinema 4D of a ladder going down. I used rotoshape to create a mask so we could see the stairs going down.
On the still node with the stairs I added grain and extra nodes to help match the video.
The problem that I am having is that I wanted to Smoothcam the footage and I thought if I connect the 2 clips using an OVER node and then under that use a Smoothcam Node thinking that it would also track the still image of the stairs. But the video slides ever so slightly over the Still of the stairs and looks fake.
How can I track the still image to the video clip and smoothcam the video clip?
Here is what I am going for to better help show you what I am doing.
    http://s111.photobucket.com/albums/n159/larswik/?action=view&current=stairs.jpg& refPage=&imgAnch=imgAnch1
    Thanks,
    -Lars

    Inconceivable,
it is the first one and second one. My first thought was to smooth out the video shot of the sand to match the still of the stairs in Cinema 4D. that is what I was trying and that is what I posted here. But I can’t get the shot smooth enough so I decided to just try an track the stairs to the motion of the video.
    Patrick,
I had to rethink the approach. Your right Smoothcam is not the right approach. I went with MatchMove and that worked for the most part. I was able to track the hand held footage and the stairs locked right to it.
I could only see the results when I switched to over view in the output type of the match move node. I then tried to use a 4 point mask using the Rotoshape to cut a hole through the hatch door to see the stairs under.
I know what I want to do Track a mask to the 4 points on the door from the sand video clip and then use that same track information for the stairs under so it all stays locked. It’s just getting the right tree components and doing it in the right order.
Here is a shot just to the cinema 4D stairs to give you a better idea.

  • I deleted a clip with "-v" in Capture Scratch- now what

I had to move some clips from one disk to another. I noticed that I had 2 clips with similar name (1) clipname.mov (2)clipname-v.mov. I could play the first with quicktime, I could not play the other so I deleted it.
Now whenever I open the project it looks for "clipname-v.mov". It takes forever the stop looking for this. How can I delete whatever it is that is trying to pull this up?

Any filters and plugins you put on the clip in the timeline will remain. When you recapture the clip, it'll just fall into place.
The issue here is that the drive you captured your media to was formatted FAT32, which has a 4GB file limit. Your video was broken up into small chunks, all tied to the first clip. The -av files aren't openable on their own. If you format your hard drive Mac OS Extended, then your captured clips will appear as one file per clip.

  • How do I move a clip with transitions attached on the primary storyline?

One more frustrating problem with the mysterious magnetic timeline: on the priumary storyline I created a text clip with a gap clip on each side, then added cross dissolve at the beginning and end of the clip so that it fades in and out to black:
Now I want to reposition this text in the timeline, mantaining the fade in/out at the head and tails. In FCP7 this was simple as a gap in the timeline simply showed black and the clip could be moved as one piece. In FCPX when I try to move the text clip with the P position tool, the transitions disappear after repositioning. Extremely frustrating:
If I select the clip and the fades together, plus the gap clip at the end, and move them together with the Position tool then the fade out is retained, but the fade in still disappears. I've also tried rolling from the fade in from the gap clip before it, but instead of rolling the clip ahead this shortens the fade (I think the behavior of trimming and rolling transitions is totally wacky). The trim tool is also useless in this situation as you can only select one edit point at a time with it.
The only solution I found is to cut the gap clip before the transition, then move the text clip and transitions with the P tool. This will create two abuting gap clips before the text clip, but allow the transitions to remain intact. Not hard, but annoying to have to do
Often I have to adjust the position of a text clip in the timeline like this after adding the transitions to get the timing right. Is there any way to move the clip while retaining the transitions at the beginning and end? It would be so much easier to be able to roll the edges of the gap clips so that I didn't have to make extra edits and workarounds.
The problem seems to be that the gap clip acts as like a regular black slug video clip in some cases, but not in other case. When you move a clip in the primary storyline a gap clip is automatically created to fill a gap -- okay, fine. But you can roll the edges of a video clip with the P tool, but not a gap clip. ***?
I'm using the latest update, 10.0.8. I will be submitting this to Apple as well....

I am trying to move the text clip forward with the transitions still attached. The difference is that in FCP7 you can leave a gap before a dissolve and it will fade in from black. If you move the text clip, the dissolve moves with it, still attached.
In FCPX however, the gap has to be a gap clip. So the dissolve is attached to both the gap clip and to the text clip. Once you put the dissolve on the edit point, there is no way to move the text clip forward or back on the timeline without deleting the dissolve. Or, if you move the clip forward or back with the Position tool (necessary to create a gap) then the transitions just disappear.
Basically, I am looking to roll the transition with the clip.
I could use the opacity handle on the text clip (using "show video animation") in stead of a dissolve, but then I have no control over the shape of the dissolve curve and I'd have to add extra handles to the text clip to center the dissolve where I want it.
Regarding "I very seldom use the position tool. Rolling the gap clips can be done with the regular arrow tool - *that* is one example of the magnetic timeline working for you."
This is true, but clips behave differently when you you roll with the P tool vs the A tool. With the A tool, other clips are magnetically rippled forward or back on the timeline to maintain their relative relationship and avoid all gaps. With the P tool, video clips maintain their position on the timeline, creating or trimming gap clips when a gap is created or filled. The problem arises when a transition is attached to the clip you are moving or trimming.
I understand in priniciple why it behaves the way it does, but it's inconvenient in this case, and inconsistent with the normal behavior of gap clips when a transition isn't involved.
In my mind the transition should be anchored to the video clip, not to both the video and gap clip when there is a transition between the two.

In Windows 8.1 Premiere Pro video imported clips shows up black screen in Source & Work space. Everything is updated on my PC. They say it could have been a Windows update? Is anyone else having this problem and found a solution any suggestions.. Thank you.

Hello, thank you for your help. I finally was able to contact someone from Adobe on line.. It took about 1 hour on hold but I finally won the lotto...Lol. Pr.. /Project/Project Settings/General/ I had the (Mercury Playback Engine GPU Accelerated (CUDA) and not the (Mercury Playback Engine Software Only) It only took 1 second for Adobe to figure it out...Lol.
Although I have a high rated Nvidia card that did handle the software for some time after a hack, I believe a Windows update may have altered my Premiere Pro CS6 settings.

  • FCP7 HELP - Exported quicktime mov plays differently than what I edited on the timeline. The playback shows the clips with ins and outs that are different than what I set in the clips when I edited - some are too early and the clips don't playback

    Please help ASAP.
    Specs: IOS 10.6.8
    Processor 2.4GHz Intel Core i5
Memory 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3 -- Everything is edited, sourced, and stored on an 2TB external hard drive to make things go faster.
    Editing with FCP 7
When I export the sequence I edited with quicktime, the playback video is very different from what I edited on the timeline. The playback has the clips with ins and outs that are way off than what I cut, and some of the clips don't show at all or have changed transitions. However when I play in the timeline in FCP, the sequence is fine, just the way I cut it.
The source of the clips was one long .mov that I cut into clips for the timeline. Everything has gone smoothly but the exported .mov is just so different.
How can I get the time codes of the clips to be the same in the exported .movs? I just want the quicktime .mov to represent my edit exactly.
This video is due tomorrow - if the solution is too time consuming, can I play within the FCP player window and Log and Capture?
    Thanks,
    MV

What is your source material? Is it H.264? FCP does not work correctly with that material.
Click on a source clip in the FCP Browser, and once selected, type Command + 9 to see the item properties for the clip. Either report those properties, or take a screen shot of the item properties, and post that here.
Next, click anywhere in your timeline, and then type Command + 0 {zero} to see your Sequence Settings. Either report those Sequence Settings, or take a screen shot of the Sequence Settings and post that here.

  • Merging clips with diff Aud Vid sources

Does anyone know a way to successfully merge Audio & Video from separate sources with diff TC to make an independent clip but keep the same TC from the Video? I have video from DV CAM tapes, but the audio was recorded on DATs. The TC on the DATs is screwed up. I lined up the vid/aud according to the slates and made sequences, then made subclips from the sequences. I'm unable to make clips from these sequences, and having problems with match frame when I cut in the sequences as clips. I know this is confusing, if anyone has any advice, please let me know! Thanks!!!

I lined up the vid/aud according to the slates and made sequences, then made subclips from the sequences.
If you can go back to this point in your workflow - that is, if you still have the sequences available - try this...
Select a video clip and the audio clips that you've lined up with that video clip in the Timeline and press Command-L to link them
(The clip names in the Timeline should now be underlined)
Drag the newly-linked clips back to the Browser. If you linked correctly, they should show up as a single video clip (with audio)
(I'd highly recommend both renaming this clip - which will have the name of your original video clip - to reflect the fact that it has audio from the DAT, as well as moving this clip into a separate bin from your capture files. When you use this clip to edit, you should not have issues with Match Frame, since FCP sees this as a clip)
Rinse and repeat for all your files/clips
Or have you tried that and had no luck?
