Receiving email subjects in Japanese

This isn't necessarily a Mail specific question per se, but I'm not quite sure where to ask this question.
I work for a school district where the faculty all use iBook on OS X (Jaguar). Lately I've noticed more and more members of the staff receiving e-mails that are in English but have subject lines that are in Japanese.
I thought it might be some sort of spam thing but some of the e-mails are from other colleagues.
Has anyone else experienced this sort of problem? Does anyone know why this happens? Is there a fix for it?

Are you totally sure it is Japanese? Could you provide a screenshot of an example? Click on my name for the address. Also it would be helpful if you could do View > Message > Raw Source on such a message and copy/paste the result into an email to me.

  • PHP Email Subject - in Japanese?

    Bit of an odd one, I know...
    I've done a little site in Japanese, and everything works fine, apart from one thing...
    I have a mail script for the contact form, but the Japanese tect I've entered for the email subject is incorrectly displaying as ありがとうござã&# 129;„ます。.
    Its fine in English, just not liking the Japanese.
    The code looks like:
    //start Trigger_SendEmail1 trigger
    //remove this line if you want to edit the code by hand
    function Trigger_SendEmail1(&$tNG) {
      $emailObj = new tNG_Email($tNG);
      $emailObj->setFrom("[email protected]");
      $emailObj->setTo("{email}");
      $emailObj->setCC("");
      $emailObj->setBCC("");
      $emailObj->setSubject("ありがとうございます。");
      //WriteContent method
      $emailObj->setContent("{firstname} 様<br /><br />この度はヒーリングハウス ハイジへのお問い合わせありがとうございます。<br /><br />スタッフが折り返し連絡しますので、今しばらくお待ち下さい。<br /><br />ヒーリングハウス ハイジ");
      $emailObj->setEncoding("ISO-8859-1");
      $emailObj->setFormat("HTML/Text");
      $emailObj->setImportance("Normal");
      return $emailObj->Execute();
    //end Trigger_SendEmail1 trigger
    If anyone has any suggestions to get the subject to display correctly in the Japanese, that would be much appreciated!

    The problem is that you're using Western European encoding, which supports only a limited range of characters. You should be able to use UTF-8 encoding:
    Change this:
    $emailObj->setEncoding("ISO-8859-1");
    to this:
    $emailObj->setEncoding("UTF-8");
    If that doesn't work, try this:
    $emailObj->setEncoding("Shift-JIS");
    Shift-JIS is a Japanese-specific encoding. UTF-8 is Unicode, which supports most writing systems, including Japanese.

  • Mail: change subject of received email?

    In Mail 4.5, is it possible to change the Subject line of received email in the Inbox?

    Re:  "feature requests should be addressed to Apple": That would probbbly be easier for benfrommo if Americans were even HALF as tolerant of foreigners struggling to express themselves in English as they are of Americans struggling to express themselves in their native language.
    Re: This ongoing problem with Mail:  Returning to the thread topic, the inability to edit the subject line of incoming e-mail is a complaint that has been frequently voiced in the Apple's "support" forums and other Mac-centric sites since Mail 1.0 was released in 2003.
    I've been using Eudora since OS 7, way back when you actually had to buy it. I tried Mail when it first came out, but not being able to edit the subject line was a deal-breaker for me, so I went back to Eudora. (Apple's "version 1" software is frequently not ready for prime time.  Keynote 1.x was horrible!  When Keynote 2 came out, Apple should have sent a free update to all version 1 purchasers, along with an apology for making them put up with such merda [another Italian word]. But I digress...)
    Yesterday I  launched the latest version of Mail. You can imagine my surprise to discover that I could STILL not edit the subject line, as almost every other mail program allows. So here we are, 9 years and 4 major versions after Mail was first released (and the complaints began), and the problem has yet to be resolved. If Apple had the slightest inclination to address this "feature request," they would have done so by now.

    I did try this too, but when I access my webmail on the iPad, the iPad doesn't allow me to type my message.  I am able to enter in the "to" address and the "subject" line, but then the keyboard will not come up for me to type my message.  Is there some trick to this?  Very frustrating!

  • Why cant I edit a received email?

    I just switched from a PC using Outlook. My Outlook has always been much more than a bunch of sent and received emails. I have lots of folders and file things away for reference, and I frequently edit emails to make them easier to find via a search or to add additional useful info.
    I cant see how there could be any technical difficulties in allowing users to edit emails, so I can only assume that they are unaware of the usefulness.
    Why would you want to edit an email examples:
    1. Quotes from vendors. Add keywords, our part numbers or additional info....maybe after a phone conversation. Sometimes the vendors call a part something different than what we call it, or they use horrible abbreviations in the product name.
    2. eFax faxes that arrive via email. They all have a useless subject with the senders fax number only, AND the content isnt indexed by search since they are essentially pictures. So....without the ability to edit the subject, I loose the nice paperless fax filing system in my email bec I cant search and find them any more!
    3. Receipts from web purchases. Add keywords to make finding them easier. Edit subject to include the name of the product/s that were purchased.
    4. Notes or emails I create myself in these folders for reference. Outlook has a neat feature "Post in this folder" that lets you create a text document in the folder and type whatever you want. This is handy for keeping info in a folder that was not received as an email. you could email yourself, but that is a multi-step process that isnt nearly as clean and simple.
    I think the Apple Mail creators don't realize that an email app can be much more useful than something to store exact copies of sent and received emails. If I cant find a solution for this, I will have to use another program, which is a huge bummer, bec aside from this one simple missing feature, I like Apple Mail, but this is a deal breaker for me.
    Please just turn on this ability!

    Mulder wrote:
    You've misunderstood what Mail is: a mail client only, not a personal notebook or information manager. Outlook is more like the latter, but poor at that task, too. Apple can't "turn on" an ability that isn't there to begin with, and it's doubtful they are going to bloat Mail by trying to make it into an Outlook clone.
    Maybe you've misunderstood what it CAN be. I'm not asking for an outlook clone. Just the ability to add useful notes to an email.
    One very big reason you shouldn't be able to edit received messages is if you have to produce them for evidence of anything. The ability to edit an email means you could alter the contents to be different than what the sender actually sent.
    This can be alleviated by recording the "Last modified date"
    e-Faxes are still images, and Outlook doesn't let you edit an image, either. There's nothing stopping you from opening the fax in Preview, adding notes and then exporting it as a PDF file.
    I dont want to edit an image, just change the subject of the email it came in.
    As for creating notes, you can do that, but it looks as though you haven't read the Help documentation for Mail yet.
    As far as I can tell, you can create a note but you cant put it in whatever folder you want. They live in separate notes folders, so it doesn't do what I was asking.
    If you want to add keywords or tags to email, you need to use something like MailTags.
    Mailtags looks like it will address all the issues I have. It allows you to add notes to an email in a separate text box that is searchable. Thanks for the tip. i would really prefer not to have to rely on a third party add-on, but will probably do it anyway. i really dont want to have to switch to Entourage...which WILL let you do this by the way as does Eudora, MS Outlook and Mozilla Thunderbird.
    Regarding MailTags, the fact that this popular add-on exists indicates to me that I'm far from alone in finding some useful functionality missing. At a bare minimum I think they should allow you to edit the subject line.

  • Can't receive email all of a sudden

    Hi
    I have had my iMac for a year now. I'm using system 10.7.5. I have had no problems with it at all until now. About a month ago I suddenly stopped receiving emails in one of my accounts. All the others worked fine. I didn't make any changes to it at all. All of sudden, when I clicked on the Send and Receive Mail button, the little wheel just turned and turned to the right of the email account and nothing happened. I called my ISP who told me everything was working fine on their side. They did notice that the account was logging in to pull mail, but it wasn't logging out again. They told me it was an issue on my side.
    I deleted the account and re-added it and it made a difference for about 10 minutes and then stopped working again. I went as far as deleting that email account off of my server as well and creating a new one for myself, putting a forward on the old one so I wouldn't miss out on any emails. This worked for about 2 weeks and I thought it was fixed. Now, all of a sudden, I can't receive emails again. I seem to be able to send emails just fine from the offending account.
    I receive them without any issues on my blackberry so it isn't my ISP. The problem is with my mac. I took all my accounts offline and back online 10 seconds later and still nothing changed. Now and then it will suddenly work but I will get ALL the same emails that I have been receiving over the last few weeks and NOTHING new. It's very odd to me but I'm really hoping someone will recognise this issue and be able to shed some light on the subject. I can't keep answering emails off of my blackberry so I need to fix this and I'm completely stumped.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks!
    Mellowe

    Shut down the app and then Reset...
    - From any Home Screen, double tap the home button to bring up the Recents List
    - Tap and hold any icon until they wiggle
    - Press the red to delete the Calendar app from this list.
    - Press the home button twice when done.
    - Reset... press the home and sleep/lock buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.
    - Restart Calendar

  • Last opened email subject is shown when opening email with many destination addresses

    Platform IPAD2 64Gb, OS version 4.3.5 (8L1), English default language.
    Issue: email subject field contents not showing correctly.
    Today I received on my gmail account an email that was targeted explicitely to a group of over 60 addresses, all of them together in the "to:" field.
    on the left part of the screen I can properly see a part of the right subject of the email.
    If I access another email, then open that one, the wrong subject of the last opened email is shown in the right part of the screen, just under the long recipient list, and before the correctly shown date time and content.
    This happens consistently, and whatever other email I decide to open, its subject is shown in place of the right one.
    While having that email opened, if I kill the email application (doubleclicking home and then killing the mail icon), and then relaunch email, the email opens immediately, and the subject is correctly shown.
    I also had cases in which an attachment was not shown in the email, despite being there, and being visible as a clip icon on the left part of the screen (but this is a different issue).

    Unfortunately there isn't official commercial support for Mozilla Thunderbird from Mozilla Corp.. I believe some contributors here ([http://mozilla.magicfab.ca myself included]) do offer such support, though.
    ''Before doing anything else, please do exit Thunderbird completely and [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-tb#w_backing-up-a-profile backup the profile folder] - it contains all your email, settings, filters, etc.''
    Regarding your issue, it looks like the mail folder information may be corrupt. In the left pane, in the folder list, right-click on the Sent folder and select '''Properties'''. Choose "'''Rebuild Index'''" or "'''Repair Folder'''" - do you even have that option? Once done, exit TB completely and restart it.
    Updating to a newer version will help anyone help you, if only because some of the documentation for older Thunderbird versions is a bit harder to find and testing to try & reproduce your problem will be harder. Don't do this just yet, though :)
    After this issue has been addressed I would suggest considering using IMAP if your provider allows you to, and of course archiving your email to Local Folders and doing regular backups of your profile.
    If you want to arrange commercial support, contact me via the link I provided above and we can discuss rapidly. Otherwise I am fine continuing here, however I can only reply as time permits. I am in Montreal (so, EST time zone).

  • Receiver email encoding problem using mail package

    Hi to all.
    I'm facing a email problem. My company email server is workig fine with emails subject but customers email server is making some strange changes when i use special characters such as 'á' or spanish letter 'n with a tail on the top'.
    I set the field 'Content_Type' of the email to 'text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1' but isn't working. If i remove those special chars, the subject is OK.
    I also tried to add content conversion in the receiver email adapter in module tab but with no possitive results.
    I'm using SAP PI 7.0 sp14.
    Any idea of what is happening?
    Kind regards,
    Inigo.

    If you want to use non-ascii characters in email subject, then you have to apply a special notation for this, like follows:
    =?utf-8?Q?Auftragsbest=C3=A4tigung?=
    This is email standard. So I recommend not use non-ascii characters in email subject.
    Regards
    Stefan

  • Email notification in human task: How to customize email subject.

    The default email subject is like [Action Required: TASK_TITLE], I want to remove this [Action Required:] from email subject.
    I tried setting <%null%> in Notification Header in .task file but the email subject is still has Action Required.
    Is there any way to customize email subject so that I can get rid of [Action Required:] [FYI] in email subject.

  • Attachment to received email not shown at all in Mail

    I am using Mail and Safari on my Mac Mini with OS 10.8.5 (Mountain Lion). My email provider and ISP is BT/Yahoo!
    I received an email that had been written on and sent from an iPad. It was supposed to contain a one-page MS Word (.docx) text file as an attachment. When I opened the email in Mail, there was no attachment, and I was on the point of complaining to the sender that she had failed to attach the file, when I had the idea of looking at the email in my BT/Yahoo! webmail — and the attachment was there.
    The only clue I have as to why the attachment did not show up when the email was opened in Mail is that the message in the email was prefaced by the following:
    ------=_Part_841708_1134486248.1416002644218
    Content-Type: multipart/alternative;
      boundary="----=_Part_841707_1414804683.1416002644201"
    ------=_Part_841707_1414804683.1416002644201
    Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8
    Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable
    Can this be the attachment in disguise? At any rate I should be very grateful for any explanations and, in particular, for advice about making sure that attachments do appear in Mail in the future.
    I should add that I have not experienced this phenomenon before — though the non-appearance of an attachment might not have been noticed if I did not know that it should have been there.

    I realize that I should not see headers like that, and none of my other received emails that day had them. The particular email in question had other unwanted characters within its message, suggesting that something gone wrong with its encoding. Here is a small sample (i.e. the '=20'):
    Subject: Re: Draft email to Claire re topics /possible agenda items for Wa=
    ndle consultative group mtg
    =20
    The email was part of a conversation, and earlier parts of it had far more of these intrusive characters, which were not there when those parts of the conversation were first received. Here is a sample:
    I hope you still have your full revised text and can send it to us again.
    Best,Michael.=C2=A0 =C2=A0 =C2=A0 =C2=A0 =C2=A0 =C2=A0 =C2=A0 =C2=A0 =C2=A0=
    =C2=A0 =C2=A0 =C2=A0 =C2=A0 =C2=A0 =C2=A0Michael Graubart
    I did not, in fact, do View / Message / Raw Source when I read the email. I have now gone back to the email and have now tried View / Message / Raw Source to see what the result would be. What happened was that an additional view of the message opened alongside the first one, with an enormous mass of characters which I shall not reproduce here unless I am told that it would be helpful.
    But in neither of the views could I find a trace of the attachment. That is what really worries me, in case it happens again unknown to me.

  • Emails unreadable from Japanese provider AU

    Hi I'm living in Japan and when receiving emails from another mobile phone provider AU (sms is not possible between different providers in Japan) its unreadable.
    This occurred after updating my iPhone to the 2.0.2 update on Saturday. The emails from AU come up in non-unicode or something so the content of the email is completely unreadable, something like $3xu#*$ throughout the whole message.
    Before the update emails from AU were as attachments where you would simply click on it and the text would be displayed. But now even the emails from AU saved on my phone and received before the update have had the attachment converted to that same kind of jibberish.
    I have tried restoring to default but has not seemed to fix it. At least the old emails are still in Jibberish.
    Message was edited by: Kindog

    Hey there! Yeah, I've also experienced the same problem when I updated my iPhone. Before the update only the emoticons were gibberish, but now even the e-mails before the update are all complete gibberish. I checked the Japanese Apple support site, and the only advice people could give was to ask your friends who use AU to not use emoticons and 絵文字 (e-moji) in their e-mails to you. I have tried restarting, changing settings to Japanese, etc, but nothing works. It seems all we can do is pray that they fix the problem with the net update. >_<

  • Receiving emails on the 6720 Classic

    Hi all
    I have configured my 6720 to send emails (and that works) but I can't get it to receive emails.
     I've tried this in two ways: (a) specifying incoming and outgoing settings for MyEmail and (b) running the email set-up wizard (which creates a new inbox for me). I can send emails from both MyEmail and my new wizard-created, but neither will receive emails.
    Does anyone have an ideas?

  • Forum email subject

    Hi all@OTN
    I've been watching some forums for some time, and receiving messages in my mailbox for every post.
    The subject line is always in the form "OTN Discussion Forum xyz has been updated", so I must open each message to read the thread title (a line beginning with "Subject"!!!!) and decide if I'm interested in. This takes a lot of time in heavy traffic forums (i.e. Apex) and makes it impossible to follow and group the threads.
    Could you please consider to show the thread title or the original subject in the "Subject" line?
    note: I've searched in the forum archives for similar questions but apparently found nothing. Hope this is not only a problem of mine.
    Thanks in advance.

    News!!!
    I've just received a message with subject:
    OTN Discussion Forum Thread "Forum email subject" has been updated.
    I guess that's why I am participating to this thread, even if I'm not watching to this forum (actually I don't get any other message from it).
    This is not what I meant in my first post. I'd like to see thread names in the message Subject line of the forums I'm only watching. That's the point.
    I think it could be done by changing the From: line in the message (which is now a generic "OTN Forum Administrator") making it say which forum the message comes from, and changing the Subject: line with the title of the post as it appears in the forum pages.
    This is the way some Mailing Lists work, and I think it's very comfortable.
    And that's why I used the "Feedback" forum :)
    Thanks for your attention.
