Recommend camcorder please

First of all, Tom Wolsky's video from Class on Demand is the best tutorial I've ever owned.
Can anyone recommend a camcorder that will just plug in and play with FCE4?
I would like a hard disk camera or flash camera to avoid disks/tapes, but the ones I've used so far (Canon HG10) take too long to transfer files, or (Sony DCR-SR100) requires a converter.
I don't care about high def, I just want to shoot, plug, and edit without converters or extra wires.
Thanks for your help.

No standard def hard drive or memory card cameras are plug and play with FCE. The only HD and card cameras that work are AVCHD cameras. So you're kind of forced to use HD, which does take a lot of space and requires a good computer.
Thank you very much for the kind words BTW.

  • Recommendations For Camcorder Please?

I just found out that it's a great big hassle to use my Hitachi DZ-HS300A in conjunction with my iBook/imovies. I have iMovie HD 5.0(v94) which I just installed because I was so impressed at a performance art show with iMovie.
Does anyone have a suggestion for a reasonably priced camcorder the IS compatable with iMovies/mac?

iMovie uses video in the .dv format, so that means you'd have no compression or quality loss problems by getting a camcorder that records to miniDV tapes. Any miniDV camcorder that has a Firewire port will probably work well with iMovie. I have always used Sonys, and have had several, from the TRV10 to my current DCR-HC26. All of them work great with iMovie. I import my movies and also export them back to the camcorder DV tapes for storage. Although I have iLife 08, and use its iPhoto, iTunes and iDVD, I continue to use iMovie HD 6 for my movies because iMovie 8 does not have the option to record back to camcorder.
Because many of the new camcorders record to DVD or hard disk, the mini DV camcorders prices have come down. You can probably get something you like for under $300, possibly a lot less if it is an older model.
Essential for iMovie versions prior to 08, the camcorder must connect to your computer with a Firewire cable. Sony calls this iLink--same thing.
You don't have to install any software, just insert a miniDV tape, record whatever you want, then connect the camcorder to your computer, open iMovie and import the recorded footage!
The final choice of exactly which one to buy will depend on what other things you need for your camcorder besides capability of importing into iMovie.
For example, if you will want to capture footage from old VHS tapes to miniDV tapes using this camcorder, you will need to carefully question a salesperson, even going so far as to request that you read the manual, to determine if this camcorder can do that.
My older DCR-HC 30 can, but my newer HC-26 cannot (so I had to use my TRV 10 for this, even though its other functions are not working well) and I did not discover it until after I had purchased the camcorder and taken it home and used it. You have to look at the manual to see if it can do this. This function is important to me, and the salesman had no idea about it, telling me that another model would do this, but discovered it could not when I insisted that he look at the manual. So, be persistent with what you need and want. Sadly, many salespeople don't have accurate knowledge of iMovie.
Do you really want to record from VHS to miniDV tapes, or are you ok with using the camcorder in a pass-through manner to record directly into iMovie? Or using a converter instead of a camcorder?
Do you need more low-light capacity for recording inside with limited lighting?
Are you more comfortable with a smaller size camcorder, something easier to carry around?
You need to go to a store and put your hands on some different models. Don't be swayed by claims of super digital zooms....look for a good range for optical zoom; mine is 20x and is fine for most all of my recordings.

  • Which Camcorder Please

I have narrowed down my search to two camcorders either the Canon HV20 HD which is a HDV Camera or the Samsung HMX20 High Definition Camcorder which uses an SD card. I am just stuck as to which one to choose. Any help again would be highly appreciated. I have read all the reviews but it helps to hear from people that have either used them first hand or know about this stuff. I will mainly be using iMovie. I travel to Canada for two tears in 8 weeks so was wanting to capture all my experience and then the best bits cut and burn to DVD to send back to England so family and frieds can see what I have been up to.

it does not really matter that much if you are going to shoot in HDV, which will look better in any case than DV, though it may take longer to render. For iMovie there are some recommendation I saw somewhere in the iMovie documentation. As long as you finding a camera that you can easily operate that would be my criteria. Quality-wise HDV is HDV.

  • Recommended Camcorder

    Hi
I am looking into a new mini DV camcorder, anything within £500 im preferably looking for and it would be good if it had a A/D Converter or DV In (which ever one you need for monitoring).
Any help would be much appreciated thanks...

    It's usually called DV-IN.
I would recommend taking a look at the Panasonic range as they are reasonably priced and reliable.
Which is the best for you can only be answered by yourself. Ask a hundred people and you will get a hundred different answers!
If recording interviews, speeches etc. is important, make sure it has a socket for an external microphone.
If you can find the model you want at John Lewis, they will match any other lower price (not mail order) and you get a 2 year guarantee as standard.

  • Recommended Camcorder for Importing Ease?

I'm considering finally replacing my tape DV camcorder (not 'mini-DV'). It's really old.
I want to get an HD camcorder but there are so many choices. I read about the iFrame format, but it looks like only Sanyo has that and I read a review by a user that said the iFrame format really wasn't helpful and didn't give full resolution.
I don't fully understand what is going to happen with the importing of the newer digital formats, but I'm interested in the easiest and fasted way of bringing the movies into iMovie without losing the quality, but also without bloating my HDD usage.
    Does such an experience exist?
What do people here recommend? What are your experiences?
    kazoo

Oops. I meant FS20 Anyway, thank you for your help, but I somehow all my problems vanished anyway: the video I had downloaded from the built-in flash memory of the FS20 needed infinite format conversion, had all kinds of image stab artifacts etc... Plus, I couldn't download from my removable SDHC card to my laptop...
SO I bought a card reader and VIOLA! ...all video is PERFECT - no conversion required, whether or not I had image stab enabled on the camera or not. So what I do now is transfer video from the built-in memory to the card and pop the card into the reader. When the laptop senses that, it launches iMovie (which can't recognize my FS20 via USB) and I go from there - EFFORTLESS as I had expected from a Mac!
Folks are probably rolling their eyes as this is probably common knowledge, but it is news to me...now I'm going to go call my family to wish them Merry Christmas on this thing called a "telephone" - you should check it out!

  • Suggestions on camcorder,please

    Hi All,
My beloved canon XL1 is near the end of it's lifespan (repeatedly sent in for repairs and still chewing up tapes). My boss has approved up to $5,000 for a new camcorder, preferably miniDV cassettes.
Any suggestions on a good, tough, easy to use camcorder that plays nice with FCP?
I videotape lots of workshops where the speaker is across the room and the lights are dimmed part-way through for powerpoint slides and in the schools themselves where I can be jostled by students, etc.

Let me preface this response by saying that i'm not a video
expert, and i would hope others chime in here...
but i know FLV's are good for streaming over an internet
connection, and since you're running it locally you may want to
consider plain old swf video for the ease of use factor... you
don't have to mess with the media playback component (or any such
superfluosness), you can just use 'loadMovie' and treat them like
any other movie in flash. You can detect when the video is finished
playing with some code like this (assume loadedMC holds the video
    that's playing)
    onEnterFrame = function()
    if (loadedMC._currentframe >= loadedMC._totalframes)
    // movie is done- notify

  • Big problems with Firewire iPod and camcorder  - please help!

    Hi all,
I don't know where else to turn with this problem. I think I've damaged my Firewire kit.
I have an iPod 4G 20GB and a Canon MV901 MiniDV Camcorder. I used them both over Firewire with my Pismo without difficulty, but I then tried video editing on my Windows machine with a firewire PCI card. Scrabbling around the back of my computer, I think I somehow managed to get the firewire cable to the camcorder in the socket upside down, reversing the power and data conncectors. Nothing really happened, but the camcorder stopped showing up. I tried it a good few times, then tried my iPod. By some bizarre coincidence, I think I managed to plug the iPod in the same way. Now, my iPod doesn't work on either the Windows machine or the Pismo over firewire, but does over USB2.0 on my Windows machine.
I measured the power going through the Firewire power pins as around 13.5 volts on my Pismo and the card, but the card also has an auxiliary power connector. This was disconnected when I tested it, but was connected when the iPod and camcorder were.
The thing I would like to know is whether a voltage spike of this size could fry the firewire controllers on both devices. The iPod's diagnostic mode detects that firewire is connected, but will not show up. Strangely, it still charges over firewire from either machine. Have I permanately damaged the firewire controllers?
    Thanks in advance,
    Rob Johnson

    Rob,
If you mistakenly inserted the FireWire connector twisted 180 degrees, the power lines can be directly connected to the data lines and can result in a fried PHY (connects the port to the FireWire bridge) or the FireWire bridge itself.
You can take a look at the voltage specs for FireWire ports and see that your voltage readings are well withing specs:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58207
I am not sure where you go from here. You could try a known-good FireWire device connected to your Pismo and see if it works. If not, the data-side of the FW port may have failed. I don't know about testing the iPod or camcorder.
A possible cheap fix for the Pismo FireWire is a FireWire PC card; if running 10.x, it will just be a plug & play affair. However, unlike built-in FireWire ports, FireWire PC cards supply very little bus power. Your camcorder will work since it has it owns power supply (assuming there is no hardware failure) and but am unsure about the iPod. The iPod will not charge, of course, but it may still work in data transfers. There are a few FireWire PC cards that also have their own power supply.

  • Recommendations Needed Please

I just purchased a 13 inch MacBook Pro (2011) and I want to get a Case and a carring sleeve for my new laptop. Can someone please direct me to a high quality Case and Sleeve with a link to a official place to buy it. I am thinking about getting the Speck 13" SeeThru Case
and the Incase Neoprene Slim Sleeve but if anyone can show me better products with a reasonable price please let me know.
                                                                                            Thanks

                                                                                        @SimsDaniel

I recently bought a macbook air sleeve (danish) from Pack & Smooch, which in my opinion is the best sleeve on the market. Take a look at Pack & Smooch, but if you don't like sleeves in wool, then I suggest you go for a incase sleeve (the one that shldr2thewheel isn't unique, but it does what you would expect from a sleeve).

  • Hard drive recommendation? Please help.

I want to replace the 100 GB factory hard drive in my dv9005us Notebook PC.  Will any of the following hard drives work?
Western Digital - Scorpio 320GB Internal SATA Hard Drive for Laptops Model: WD3200KTRTL | SKU: 8909586
SATA interface; 16MB cache; 7200 rpm; data transfer rates up to 3 Gbps
Western Digital - 320GB Internal Hard Drive for Laptops Model: WD3200BEVT | SKU: 8679762
Serial ATA interface; WhisperDrive technology; ShockGuard technology; data transfer rates up to 3 Gbps; 8MB buffer
Western Digital - Scorpio Blue 500GB Internal Serial ATA Hard Drive for Laptops Model: WD5000BEVTRTL | SKU: 9172799
Serial ATA interface; 5400 rpm; 3 Gbps data transfer rate
    A few days ago, I purchased a
Seagate - Momentus 500GB Internal Serial ATA Hard Drive for Laptops Model: ST905003N3A1AS-RK | SKU: 9326428
Serial ATA interface; quiet operation; 3 Gbps; 16MB buffer
from Best Buy, but I am going to return it because there have been firmware problems with some Seagate drives and the box it came in says that it contains a 5 year warranty but the only thing inside was the drive.
Can I use a 7200 rpm 16MB buffer drive in my computer?
Thanks in advance for any advice/suggestions.

The dv9005us does not have the hard drive protection system. I believe that is confined to the HP/Compaq Business Models. So no worries there.

  • XP v Win 7 Recommendations Please

I have XP Pro on my T400 and I'm thinking of upgrading to Win 7. Does anyone have any experience of whether I should stay with XP or move to 7. I have 2GB RAM and do not want to upgrade

    Hi musicmylife,
    Welcome to the Lenovo forum.
I have not yet tried Win 7 myself, hopefully others with direct experience will share. But I recently came across the following comparison of XP, Vista and 7 that you might find useful:
    http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/windows-7-notebook,2485.html
What I take away from that is that XP is still a fine OS despite its age. Of course there may be some new Win 7 features that you want. Everything I've read seems to agree that Win 7 is a fine OS as well.
    Best regards,
    Frank

  • Camcorder recommendations please

I just purchased a new macbook which does not have firewire. Any recommendations on a new camcorder, please??? I ill use primarily for new granddaughter and hiking. Looking at Sony and Canon high def.

I just purchased a new macbook which does not have firewire.
Well, that narrows your choices significantly right there.
Looking at Sony and Canon high def
And that narrows them again. Part of this equation is what application do you intend to edit with? If you just want to stick with iMovie, here's the complete list:

If they say "MPEG2", then they're not HD.

  • Please recommend a book for basic CSS learning

I have "CSS The Missing Manual" and even though I'd say it's
a great book. It does not tell you "how to."
All the books I have read gives you templates, I want to
"know how it was done." Seeing a template already made up does not
show you how to build your own. Yea you can can look at the codes
in the Dreamweaver templates but what happens if you want to build
your own? Why was this DIV placed here? How do I create another
    Column?
There are so much I'm not learning.
I am looking for a book that will assume I know nothing about
CSS and tells me, "to make an elastic layout, do this." "To make a
liquid layout do this, write this, use these tags."
    Any recommendations? Please help.
I would like to go to school for this, but can't afford it at
    the moment.

  • Can anybody recommend any House Music production books please?

    Hi,
Been looking on Amazon with a view to buying one or two books (hardback or paperback not Kindle) on music production, in particluar - dance music and house music, and just wandering if anybody can recommend any please..?
I've seen The Secrets of House Music Production by Marc Adamo (Paperback), The Dance Music Manual: Tools, toys and techniques
by Rick Snoman (Paperback) and one or two others but wasn't sure if these were now a little dated or do they stand the test of time..?
I'm going to be using Logic Pro 9 as my DAW.
    Many thanks,
    Daren

A lot of effort went into the on-line review of "Mastering EJB 2" by Ed Roman et. al. at www.theserverside.com. The Server Side participants constantly reviewed the book while it was being written! I think it is the best book on EJBs, but don't take my word for it: check it out. You can download the book in non-printable PDF format from www.theserverside.com under the Resources tab. You'll have to sign up (for free) to download the book.

  • Please recommend audio interface /soundcard

I need a good audio interface / soundcard for my Power Mac G5.
    My criteria are as follows:
Must work perfectly with the G5 in OS 10.4.
Must have excellent A/D and D/A convertors
Must have digital in/out and balanced line in/out
    Must have 1/4'' headphone out
    Must support a minimum of 24bit, 48kHz
I do not need any pre-amps or bundled software, I don't need it to be portable, and I only need stereo in/out.
The D/A and A/D convertors are the most important feature for me, so must be low noise, flat signal response, low harmonic distortion etc.
I would also like it to be cheap, certainly no more than £200 ($368 / €291).
I am not sure whether PCI Express, Firewire or USB would be best; - I am willing to consider them all.
    What I have already:
Studio Projects VTB1 pre-amp (male XLR balanced out)
Yamaha MSP3 speakers (female XLR balanced OR female 1/4'' TRS balanced)
    I use Logic Pro 7.1.1
What audio interface / soundcard do you recommend? - Please give me some options for me to investigate further. All responses are much appreciated.
    Thanks.

These companies have firewire devices for ~$300-$500:
    http://www.alesis.com/
    http://www.m-audio.com
    http://www.edirol.com/
Get firewire, not USB2. I don't know of any PCI Express audio devices except for Pro Tool's new hardware (expensive).

  • Could anyone recommend a reliable card reader for my MacBook Pro please?

    Hi,
Looking for a reliable card reader for compact flash and SD cards for my MacBook Pro.  Would anyone be able to recommend one please?  Most reviews I've read only seem to mention Windows and I'm not sure whether they are Mac compatible.
    Many thanks, Karen

    Karen,
Hi, what year is you macbook pro?  Is it the Early 2008 one with the grey keyboard, or the newer ones with black keys?  If you have the grey keyboard macbook pro I use the Sandisk card reader:
For the newer MacBook Pro's a usb card reader works well in addition to the sd card reader built in the MacBook Pro.  They are making thunderbolt card readers now for a low price:http://computers.pricegrabber.com/flash-memory-readers-accessories/SmartDisk-THU NDERBOLT-SD-STICK-WRITER-USB/m16520521.html
