Recommendations for recovery catalog database backup

Hi
We are using IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for our 9i db on AIX 5.2.
I would like us to consider using rman but I am not sure of the best way we would go about backing up the database we would use for our recovery catalog.
This database that hold all the metadata would need to be backed up after every rman backup. The rman backup would go to tape, so I am assuming that the recovery catalog would be backed up on tape also.
What are the common procedures for this in other shops ?

Aman. That doc does help, and indeed it does explain
Back up the recovery catalog with the same frequency that you back up the target database.
We would be doing nightly backups, so we would have to back up the catalog with the same frequency.
The doc explains that we would use rman for these backups also, but that it would be in NOCATALOG mode so that the repository is in the control file.
And then what? Just copy this to tape? Seems that with rman there is then a need to do two backups - one of the target db and one of the recovery catalog.
Thanks.I shall suggest to take an export of the underlying schema which is holding the info in the recovery catalog. That's all which is basically required to be safe. In case , everything gets burnt regarding the catalog db,you can immediately create another db, import the user back there and things are in place. This should be a quick and easy way out of the backup of recovery catalog.
Yes if you are going to take backups every night than backup of recovery catalog schema/db nightly will be a good option. Docs are meant to promote people for RMAN so indeed they would talk about it. But its not at all a compulstion to use RMAN for recovery catalog schema's backup. If its a big catalog maintaining lots of database's info than using RMAN with all its features is a good option. If a single db is a part of it than it may not be that much big and export of teh schema alone may serve the purpose too.

  • Oracle RMAN recovery catalog database in a Primary and Standby mode

    Hello All,
The customer wants the RMAN recovery catalog database to be highly available so that none of the RMAN database backup jobs are impacted at the time of taking the database backups. There are are 200+ databases running on OEL, RHEL and Windows. So we planned to host the recovery catalog database on Oracle Active DataGuard 11.2.0.1 Enterprise Edition on RedHat EL 5.8 version on two physical servers. The Primary Instance will be in one server in the Primary DC and the Standby Instance will be on another server in another DC. Also all the database datafiles are hosted in ASM Diskgroups on SAN (DATA, FRA, REDO, ARCH diskgroups).
Are there any specific RPM/patch/OS user custom/specific settings or configurations needed..?
    Thanks in advance..
    Regards,
    Abhijit

    Hi,
i think you can achieve HA for the catalog DB. (Rac and Asm should work fine)
There's no way (afaik) to use TAF with the rman backup. If you have a failure during a backup it simply fails.
There is no TAF in this situation.
    Hope this helps.

  • Query to identify the recovery catalog database name from target database

    Hi,
How to get the recovery catalog database name from the registered target database?
i dont know my recovery catalog database for my target database.
I know we can use the query
    select * from rc_database;
from recovery catalog database to know all the registered database with the recovery catalog but I want to know is there any way or query to identify the recovery catalog database name from target database to which the target database is registered
    With Regards
    Boobathi P

You can check the backup scripts which you use to backup your target database to get the catalog database name.
And check the corresponding connect string in TNSNAMES.ORA file or tnsping to get the server details of the catalog database.

  • Windows Server 2012 - Backup failing with Exchange - The application will not be available for recovery from this backup. the consistency check failed

    Hi
We have a Windows 2012 server with Exchange 2013, all is working fine except now i am getting issues with the backup.
'Exchange - The application will not be available for recovery from this backup. the consistency check failed for the component Microsoft Exchange Server'
I have checked the database all is fine, i have created a new db and move all mailbox;s over and then removed the old db, i have enabled circular logging and then disabled it, it seems no matter what i do i cannot get a full backup!
i did have to restore the server once and the backups still worked for about 4 days after that and then stopped, i have also tried to remove and re add the backup role!
i am stumped, any advice would be great!

    Hi
Ok, i created a test db and tried to back it up right away, it failed, i did not add any mailbox's to it either. i got quite a few events in the windows logs, as well as the same event above i got the following:

  • SBS Exchange not available for recovery with Server Backup

    Hi
I have a Small Business Server 2008 that we have taken over, and have found that the Exchange has not been backed up over the last 2 years, showing now a total of around 62000 log files,
When running windows backup it gets to the screen showing
"Running consistency check for application Exchange"
This then fails, and the backup continues, but then tells me after that "Completed with Warnings"
and under the errors in windows server backup it says "Application will not be available for recovery from this backup, Consistency check failed for components Microsoft Exchange Server"
The following is what I have done to try resolve this issue,
Stopped SQL services then tried running the backup
Stopped Information store and tried running backup
    Used Eseutil /D
Enabled Circular logging on the Exchange and tried the backup again,
Please remember this database has not been backed up in 3 years, and there are log files from 2011, so loosing all the data is not an option,
    Regards
    Sergio Spinola

Loosing the data is unlikely, and most of those logs will have been committed already.
If you dismount the store, and run eseutil /mh "dbpath.edb" you can see which log files are required for the store to mount.

  • Config recovery catalog database

    dear all.
i had read several documents about "create recovery catalog", but all of that start with statement
    CREATE TABLESPACE
...and continue with CREATE USER, etc.
I want to create a NEW database for recovery catalog, this database what characteristics must to have ?? Anyone have a link or document where explain me how to create a database (only i need database creation) for recovery catalog.???
    thanks
    The version is ORacle 10gr2

    hi,
the recovery catalog is just a normal database with a schema called rman or whatever you choose.
it should ideally be on a separate server to your target database. The RMAN database as with any other database should have multiplexed control files and redo files.
    schema creation assumming windows O/S
-- Create tablepsace to hold repository
    CREATE TABLESPACE "RMAN"
    DATAFILE 'C:\ORACLE\ORADATA\W2K1\RMAN01.DBF' SIZE 6208K REUSE
AUTOEXTEND ON NEXT 64K MAXSIZE 32767M
    EXTENT MANAGEMENT LOCAL
    SEGMENT SPACE MANAGEMENT AUTO;
    -- Create rman schema owner
CREATE USER rman IDENTIFIED BY rman
    TEMPORARY TABLESPACE temp
    DEFAULT TABLESPACE rman
    QUOTA UNLIMITED ON rman;
    GRANT connect, resource, recovery_catalog_owner TO rman;
    then create the recovery catalog
    C:>rman catalog=rman/rman@w2k1

    connected to recovery catalog database
    recovery catalog is not installed
    RMAN> create catalog tablespace "RMAN";
    recovery catalog created
    RMAN> exit
    Recovery Manager complete.
    C:>
    then register your database
    C:>rman catalog=rman/rman@w2k1 target=sys/password@w2k2

  • REcovery catalog Database Migration

I have a Database which serves as a catalog database for all other production databases.
I need to Migrate this database to a new server. What are my options. Its a dataguard pair.
    Version is 10.2.0.4.0.

Sounds simple to me.. just shutdown the database, copy all the data files and recreate the controlfile... and change all tns entries in all database servers for the catalog database. Also, check the tns entries for dataguard..
You can find a slot when there are no backups running.

  • How can i add servername to my report for all cataloged database

    1) Im using following sql statement to find the backup type, status and their timings and i would also like to see the databasename with it's corresonding servername.
    select
    DB_NAME,DB_KEY,
    input_type "Backup Object",
    output_device_type "Target Device",
    status "Status",
    output_bytes_display "Backup Size",
    time_taken_display "Time Taken",
    start_time "Backup Begin",
    end_time "Backup End"
    from rman.rc_rman_backup_job_details
    where start_time > sysdate - 1
    and input_type in ('DB INCR','DB FULL','ARCHIVELOG','BACKUPSET')
    order by DB_NAME,DB_KEY
    /

The only information that will be available will be from one of the RC_* views. For a list of the views see the index in the Database Backup and Recovery Reference
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B28359_01/backup.111/b28273/index.htm#R
The database name is available as the NAME column of the RC_DATABASE view. You will need to join this view to others at least on DB_KEY.
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B28359_01/backup.111/b28273/rcviews027.htm#sthref2607
I'm not aware of any view that would have the server name. You will need to map the database name or id to your own table of server locations.

Thanks. Not really 'mandatory" but "advisable", yes very much! It surely is just a schema and not really a full blown database but its still better to have it on other machine from that which stores teh target db.

    Dear Mahmoud,
In the SMTP server settings below you need to replace with your HUB server FQDN if its 2010 or Mailbox server FQDN if its 2013 and after that i think it should work.

  • New-DPMRecoveryOption CopyToFolder for an Exchange database backup

I'm trying to restore an Exchange database from DPM 2010 into the file system using powershell. I'm able to perform this action in the DPM GUI simply by selecting the "Copy to a Network Folder" option. When I try this in powershell I

    $RecoveryObject = Get-DPMRecoverypoint -Datasource $Ds[0] | Sort -Property RepresentedPointInTime -Descending | Select-Object -First 1
$RecoveryOption = New-DPMRecoveryOption -TargetServer "DPM" -RecoveryLocation CopyToFolder -RecoveryType Recover -TargetLocation "f:\test"
    Restore-DPMRecoverableItem -RecoverableItem $RecoveryObject -RecoveryOption $RecoveryOption
I get the following error on the New-DPMRecoveryOption command:
New-DPMRecoveryOption : Parameter set cannot be resolved using the specified named parameters.
I've tried a few dozen permutations of the available options, but I continue to get the same error message. I'm not seeing much documentation to explain all these options. Any guidance is appreciated.

  • Catalog Database creation

    Hi Joel Pérez,
I accidentally replied on your topic 'RMAN ( CATALOG CREATION ) STEP BY STEP'.So i am very sorry. I need your help.
According to 'Recovery Manager user's Guide' allocation disk space for recovery catalog database are-
    SYSTEM tablespace 90 MB
    Temp tablespace 5 MB
Rollback or undo tablespace 5 MB
    Recovery catalog tablespace 15 MB
Online redo logs 1 MB each (3 groups, each with 2 members)
Is it possible to create system tablespace on 90MB on 9i rel2? Do i need to run the catalog.sql,catproc.sql & other scripts on catalog database?
Please give me a guide line how to create a catalog database.
    Arif Md. Eftekhar Rashid.

    Hi joel
I successfully created catalog database and can backup from there. I have created two database one for my production database and one for catalog. I created those databases using dbca. Catalog database should be as small as possible for the shortage of my storage. So During the createtion of catalog database Should I include the follwing additional feature –
    Oracle Spatial
    Oracle Ultra Search
    Oracle Data Mining
    Oracle OLAP
    Oracle JVM
    Oracle interMedia
    Oracle Text
    XDB Protocols
What is the function of those additional features? Can I eliminate those option during the creation of production database too?
    Arif.

  • To calculate the size of backup for a particular database in RMAN catalog

    Hi ALL,
Could you please guide me how I can calculate the size of backup data for a particular database in Recovery Catalog, if I am using Tapes as my backup media for recovery catalog.
    Regards
    Harpreet Singh

    Hi,
I am not Up to the mark of your question ..
If you see the V$log you can get it.. Size of the redo logs can be determined either by examining the file system size or by reading the BYTES column on the V$LOG view. Then Check the number of redo Logs avaialble checked whether they are mirrored or etc., Combining the two figures we have a total redo log data at peak in one day. This is the amount of data that any backup facility or storage of Archive Redo Logs would have to take into account. This figure should be mitigated against the fact that manual switching of redo logs means that not all archived redo logs will be the full size.

  • What's the recommended guideline on backing up a recovery catalog?

while I understand "Benefits of Using the Recovery Catalog as the RMAN Repository" as stated in
    http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/server.920/a96566/rcmquick.htm#442214
as well as things to take note if using control file as the sole rman repository,
as stated in "Monitoring the Overwriting of Control File Records" in http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/server.920/a96566/rcmrepos.htm#446924
I do not understand why in Backup and Recovery Advanced User's Guide
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B14117_01/server.101/b10734/rcmrepos.htm
"Back Up the Recovery Catalog Often"
Even if you have to restore the recovery catalog database using a control file autobackup, you can then use the full record of backups in your restored recovery catalog database to restore the target database without using a control file autobackup for the target database.
=>probably implies that we can use another recovery catalog let's call it backupbackup to restore the recovery catalog
"Choosing the Appropriate Method for Physical Backups"
Follow these guidelines when developing an RMAN backup strategy for the recovery catalog database:
    * Run the recovery catalog database in ARCHIVELOG mode so that you can do point-in-time recovery if needed.
    * Set the retention policy to a REDUNDANCY value greater than 1.
    * Back up the database onto two separate media (for example, disk and tape).
    * Run BACKUP DATABASE PLUS ARCHIVELOG at regular intervals, to a media manager if available, or just to disk.
    * Do not use another recovery catalog as the repository for the backups.=> this contradicts the previous statement
    * Configure the control file autobackup feature to ON.
so may I know what's the recommended guideline on backing up a recovery catalog? should we use another recovery catalog to keep the rman repositories of the the main primary catalog or just use a control file autobackup feature?
    thanks

I understand the question and the confusion.
Please note, however, that this forum is for discussing problems and errors with the documentation in general. Your question is related to a specific product and is, as far as I can tell, not a note about a documentation error or a correction.
The appropriate place to discuss this is the Database (General) forum or - perhaps surprisingly - the RMAN forum. These can both be found by
    1) Clicking on the 'Forum Home' link at the top of this page;
    2) Scrolling down to the category 'Database' (a category is identified by a special row format that does not list the number of topics)
    3) Expanding the category by clicking on the 'More ...' link.
    4) Scrolling down to the "Database - General" or "Recovery Manager" forum and clicking on it's link.
Note that forums have a search function that may be used to find answers if someone has already asked a similar question.
