Reconnecting the Network

Hi All,
First off, I'm new to OS X Server. That being said, I've been put in charge of maintaining a web server running OS X 10.3 for a small academic organization. Setting up basic services like SFTP/SSH/Web have been pretty straight-forward.
I'd like to use the server for more than just a web server. The organization has about 6 Macs that are not connected to the server in any meaningful way. Each is a stand alone iMac with its own set of users and logins and no network file sharing. Also, there is no internal network cabling structure for the server, all computers access the internet via the University in a similar manner.
My first question: What services would I need to set up for a centralized user account system and how do I configure workstations to require this authentication to login? For example, lets say I create an account John on the server. Once created, the user would then be able to login to any of the workstations with the same login and password. Moreover, John's personal documents and files would be available regardless of which computer he logged into.
Second question: Could this be accomplished without rewiring the cables? Do the computers need to be a on tight network, or one in which internet is provided by the main server, in order for this to work properly?

you need to set the server as a directory master, via Server Admin, Open Directory. Then use WorkGroup Manager to add users, groups and computers. To connect the client use Directory Access and the ldap plugin to bind to the server.
Then use the standard login.
For example, lets say I create an account
John on the server. Once created, the user would
then be able to login to any of the workstations with
the same login and password. Moreover, John's
personal documents and files would be available
regardless of which computer he logged into.
The home areas will then need to be setup as network folders on an afp server.
Second question: Could this be accomplished without
rewiring the cables? Do the computers need to be a

    I installed the Artisan 800 all-in-one drivers and software. I can print wirelessly. I looked up Epson scanning setup help. When I open Epson Scan Settings.app, click on "Network", but all the buttons are disbled (unclickable). Therefore, I cannot click "Add" and all the subsequent steps. I tried adding the app to the "incoming allowed" list in Firewall, disabled the Firewall entirely, but to no avail. Funny thing is, it was working a couple of months ago when I had the printer new, but since then I have installed a couple of OS X updates (I believe I had 10.5.5 when it was working). In the intervening period, I also messed around with the OS X supplied Printer drivers (deleted a whole bunch of files, not sure if some required files were deleted), and I noted that the recent 10.5.7 update (and possibly 10.5.6 before) did not restore those files. However today I uninstalled all the Epson drivers/files using the A800 supplied CD, and reinstalled everything. I even tried installing the scanner files from Epson's webpage. Nothing worked. Please suggest something!

    i had a similar problem -I connected by printer to an iMac via a network cable to a Time Machine 802.111 router. Could print but not scan. I could only get the scan functions working by setting up the wireless connection on the printer. But then I could not print until i reconnected the network cable between the printer and the TIme capsule. Tel support from Epson seemed more confused than me!
    Should I have to have the printer networked by cable as well as wireless? That seems silly. I must be missing a step in one of the setups.

    Have you tried rebooting your wireless router by removing power from it for about 30 seconds, then powering it back up?

    Almost every day when I open my computer I get this message:

    We then have to go through the process of resetting everything from start to finish just so I can connect to the server. There is no reason that we can find that causes this other than maybe windows updating every night. Any suggestions as to how to

    it sounds like you have a network drive you are trying to map even though you are not logged in maybe in a script or task instead of backing up to :P backup to the share, make sure you have security set properly to run the task when not logged on.
    I assume you are running a backup of some sort as this is the backup forum..

    worksafe's link with the KeyChain fix is good.
    This usually happens when KeyChain has two entries for the same WiFi network.
    If repair did not work you can follow the manual steps:
    Disconnect WiFi
    Open KeyChain from Applications / Utilities and find your WiFi network entry(ies) and delete all of them.
    Connect to your WiFi again.

    Notice there is no mention of WiMax.
    It doesn't really matter anyway as Sprint is rolling their WiMax network down for use by MVNOs. Actual Sprint customers will not have access to WiMax at all. It was a failed experiment.

    Which model iMac do you have?  Which OS system are you using?  Need this information to provide you with the correct troubleshooting solution(s).  
    Please detail all you have done to resolve your issue.  Need this information so that the users can avoid the "been there, done that" scenario type responses.  This is to avoid repeating the troubleshooting you may have already tried.  Thank you.

  • My i Phone drops WiFi connection after just a few minutes and wont reconnect unless I reset the network settings and reboot the  phone?

    My i Phone 4s has suddenly started to drop wifi connection after nealy months of near perfect connections?
    To restore a wifi connection I have to reset the network settings and restart the phone, this only fixes the issues for around 2-3 mins?
    Other quick fixes like switching wifi on and off/ switching to airoplane mode for a few secconds have no impact.
    This is really annoying as I am using my data allowence very quickly, and as the phone is continually searching for a wifi connection the battery time has reduced dramatically.
    I just wondered if any one else has the same issue, and any suggestions as to how I can fix this.

  • OS 10.8.2 on an imac.  Whenever I wake from sleep, the wifi has disconnected and I have to use the Netowrk Diagnostics in the Network settings to log back in to my router.  Every time.  is there any kind of fix for this?

  • Can I use a USB Lead to connect PC with my Printer instead of the network connection?

    I have recently moved my BT home Hub (wireless modem) from my study where it sat beside my printer, into the living room downstairs. So that it’s A, nearest to the BT access point (less loss) and B, it can connect directly to my TV, Blu-ray & BT Vision box. I have used a pair of Powerline adaptors to connect the home hub back to my HP PC and it’s all working very well with a faster broadband speed reaching my PC.
    The only problem I now have is with my printer, which connects wirelessly to the home hub.
     The printer is now right on the edge of the wireless range and really struggles to make a connection, sometimes failing altogether. The printer takes a long while to start up and sometimes fails to collect all of the data.
    My real question is:
    Can I simply connect my PC to the printer using a USB cable (USB A to USB B) and if I do, do I need to make any other changes to the way my PC connects with the printer?

    No problem.  Here's the link for the download for your operating system.  Click Here  When I sent my first post, I wasn't sure which operating system you were using.  
    Here's something you might try first before you do the download.  You can leave the current drivers installed ( might come in handy if you decide to reconnect to the network ).  Click on your Start button, and then select All Programs.  Scroll down to the HP folder and open it.  Then open the folder for the Photosmart 6510.  Select Printer Setup and Software.  You can go through the installation process as you did before, but this time you will choose usb connection.  
    Let me know what happens.

  • Why can I connect to my home network with my iPhone 5 in one room, but when I move to another it is 'unable to connect to the network'

    At home, I can connect my iPhone 5 to my home wifi network with no problems, as long as I stay downstairs.
    As soon as I go upstairs my phone disconnects from the network. I can still see the home network it in the available network lists (with full signal strength), but when I try to reconnect I get an 'unable to connect to the network message'
    If I move back downstairs it reconnects
    This has only started happening in the past week or so
    I've tried to forget and rejoin the network, but this doesn't work
    I reset my network settings on the phone. This worked for a couple of hours and I could connect to the wifi upstairs, but now it won't connect again.
    Does anyone have any ideas what is causing this?

    Sounds like your wi-fi signal strength has degraded.  Try rebooting your wi-fi router, or get it serviced.
    Do you have similar issues with any other wi-fi routers?

    This has solved loads of people who have this issue and have used an alternate DNS setting.  Below are instructions for both iPhone OTA and on you Mac
    If you are getting the error message "Unable to check for update" when you try an OTA (over the air update)
    Change DNS Servers
    Settings -> Wi-Fi
    Click the blue arrow on your connected network
    Delete everything in DNS and replace it with 208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220
    Try again
    If this works, you will probably want to remove the WiFi network using "Forget This Network" and then reconnect to it to get your original DNS servers back. Alternatively, make a note of the original DNS servers before deleting them and replace it after you are done.
    If you are getting the error message "Unable to check for update" when you try through iTunes
    On your Mac
    Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, and then click Network.
    Select the network connection service you want to use (such as Wi-Fi or Ethernet, unless you named it something else) from the list, and then click Advanced.
    Click DNS, and then click Add at the bottom of the DNS Servers list. Enter the IPv4 address for the DNS server.

    My Intel iMac is connected to a LaserWriter 16/600 PS.  I have used this printer for many years.  I have always worked even with my Intel iMac.  This morning trying to use it as usual I got a print error message, telling me: "reversible problem: the network host «10.0.1.4» is busy (see below)":
    I restarted my iMac and my printer in this order, and still got the same message.   No changes has been made to my network.  What could be the problem ?

    Hi,
    The «Host is down» message is back again ...  For a reason I don't understand, I am unable to print to my LaserWriter 16/600 PS anymore. 
    I have been using this printer in the present environnement for 2 years without any problem.  For a month or so, my iMac seems to loose contact with the printer.  Playing around with the cables and restarting the computer as done until now, but I don't understand what really gets my back in communication with the printer.
    This morning I have tried to be more cautious of my steps to see what can be the way back, but I was not able yet to reconnect to the printer.
    I closed the printer, disconnected the cable to the router, restarted the computer and opened the printer ...  Nothing did it.  
    Who or what is the intruder messing the communication ?

    I had the same problem. I just solutioned it just by disabling MAC Address filtering in my LinkSys router. This is strange as I did enter the address of my ATV3 in the list of allowed devices in the router configuration software.
    The truth is that it now works! I just seems that ATV is not compatible with MAC Address filtering.

    I upgraded from Snow Leopard to the latest Mountain Lion OS and now my Wifi will not work. When I try and insert the password to my Wifi network states either 'connection timed out' or 'password and/or user name not recognised' please help...!

    Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried, until the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
    Restart the router. Many problems are solved that way.
    Step 2
    Change the name of the wireless network, if applicable, to eliminate any characters other than letters and digits. You do that on your router via its web page, if it's not an Apple device, or via AirPort Utility, if it is an Apple device.
    Step 3
    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Network
    Click the Assist me button and select Assistant. Follow the prompts.
    Step 4
    Back up all data.
    Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
    Enter the name of your wireless network in the search box. You should have one or more "AirPort network password" items with that name. Make a note of the name and password, then delete all the items. Quit Keychain Access. Turn Wi-Fi off and then back on. Reconnect to the network.
    Step 5
    You may need to change other settings on the router. See the guidelines linked below:

    Step 6
    Make a note of all your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane, then delete the connection from the connection list and recreate it with the same settings. You do this by clicking the plus-sign icon below the connection list, and selecting Wi-Fi as the interface in the sheet that opens. Select Join other network from the Network Name menu, then select your network. Enter the password when prompted and save it in the keychain.
