Reconstruct problems after shutdown / startup

Yesterday we had an air conditioning outage in our data center, so I had to shutdown our iMS system. I forgot to do a stop-msg on the mail server, so it apparently did not get shut down very cleanly. When I booted back up later in the day, I had to run fsck on the data partition (which is on an external disk array) many times before it would boot up successfully.
I was able to start up the messaging server fine, but I monitored the logs and found errors like this one (from the imap log):
[30/Jul/2006:22:00:02 -0500] opal imapd[813]: Store Error: Unable to get quota root user/sch736: Unknown code ____ 248
[30/Jul/2006:22:00:02 -0500] opal imapd[813]: Store Error: Unable to add new mailbox entry user/sch736: System I/O error. Administrator, check server log for details.
[30/Jul/2006:22:00:02 -0500] opal imapd[813]: Store Error: Unable to auto create mailbox user/sch736: System I/O error. Administrator, check server log for details.
I was getting similar errors all over the place, so I decided to rebuild the mboxlist.
running reconstruct -r -f doesn't do anything at all
reconstruct -m gives me the following:
partition primary is at /opt/luminis/iplanet/server5/msg-opal/store/partition/primary
user/aab753: fixed quota root usage
user/abm909: cannot fix quota root usage: I/O error
and puts the following in the default log:
[31/Jul/2006:08:52:47 -0500] opal reconstruct[25053]: General Notice: ./reconstruct -m
[31/Jul/2006:08:52:47 -0500] opal reconstruct[25053]: Store Critical: Unable to open index file for user/aab753/School/Comm 170 group: No such file or directory

[31/Jul/2006:08:52:52 -0500] opal reconstruct[25053]: Store Critical: Mailbox database error: folder.db: page 2204 doesn't exist, create flag not set
reconstruct -n -r runs for a while but then dies at
user/abm909/Sent
and puts the following in default log
[31/Jul/2006:08:57:02 -0500] opal reconstruct[25066]: General Notice: ./reconstruct -n -r
[31/Jul/2006:08:57:11 -0500] opal reconstruct[25066]: Store Critical: Mailbox database error: folder.db: page 2204 doesn't exist, create flag not set
I also was receiving the following error while running reconstruct -r
cannot fix quota root usage: I/O error
but I think that is because I had copied the files out of the mboxutil folder at the time.
Any ideas on how to fix what's going on?
Thanks,
Greg

HI Jay,
Sorry I disappeared for a while. This server is part
of a SunGard Higher Education Luminis install, so I
was dealing with their support for a while trying to
get things resolved.I understand.
>
We got things working ok by following your steps from
http://swforum.sun.com/jive/thread.jspa?threadID=53262
&messageID=204166
A. stop the messaging server. Confirm that ALL
processes related to Messaging are stopped. Use ps
-ef, and grep for the path it's installed in. Kill -9
any processes that are still there.
B. Remove all contents of the mboxlist directory.
C. Start the server up. It will work normally, but
users will only have access to INBOX folders.
D. Run reconstruct -m to fix folder access.
However, after doing that, some users were getting
the following error in the Luminis IMAP client:
[error: We could not load the Email Center because
one of the folders
was invalid. Error given was: MailException: type=2
(EXCEPTION_InvalidFolder), description: Error getting
subfolder, Sent ]
And some users can get in fine, but are missing their
personal subfolders.
So they had me run these steps:
1) Stop the messaging server in its entirety
(./stop-msg and check for related processes to make
sure they've stopped running. On NT/Windows 2000,
if they're set to start up automatically change them
to Manual in the Services control panel)
) Make a backup of the store directory, as well as
the msg-instance/store/mboxlist folder contents. It
is recommended you copy the contents of mboxlist out
to an easily accessible backup directory -- if later
required to restore from backup, this will make the
mboxlist folder readily available instead of having
to do a full restore.
3) run reconstruct -m
4) run a script to move all store.idx to
store.idx.old -- See the steps below on how to do
this.
5) start up store by doing:
./start-msg store
and wait until store posted all transactions in the
mboxlist/log.* files -- sometimes this may take 1-2
hours, because it has to go through every transaction
that hasn't completed the update on the mailbox
database
6) run reconstruct -r
7) stop-msg store
8) backup and move out the contents of
iplanet/server5/msg-instance/store/mboxlist to a
place we can get back to later
9) run reconstruct -m again
10) ran "start-msg store" and let it complete, once
again - this usually doesn't take as long unless new
transactions were posted
11) start the rest of the messaging server processes
-- by running ./start-msg, and let it ignore the
store process since that is already running, or start
up all other services manually (i.e., pop, http,
imap, etc)
Which I did, until step 9, when it gave me the
following error:
reconstruct: cannot list quota roots: System I/O
error. Administrator, check server log for details
So I started the messaging server and then
reconstruct -m ran successfully, but we're back in
the exact same boat with the same users having the
same problems.
I can fix the users getting the IMAP error by moving
all the store.idx files and doing a recontruct -r on
the user. However, I don't know who all is affected
and don't really want to do that one by one.
I don't know how to fix the subfolder problem. Each folder has a store.idx file.
reconstruct -r -f may fix all the problems at one go. If not, parse the log files for affected users, and remove store.idx files, and reconstruct.
You MAY need to apply some later hotfix/patch, as some work has been done in the reconstruct area. I don't remember exactly what version you're on.

hope I am giving you good information to go off of.

  • Init.ora setting not effective after shutdown/startup

    Hi there,
I've set optimizer_features_enable = 8.1.7 (both lower caps and upper caps) in init.ora
After shutting down oracle and starting up again,
show parameter opt still shows 9.2.0
    SQL> show parameter opt
    NAME TYPE VALUE
    filesystemio_options string asynch
    object_cache_optimal_size integer 102400
    optimizer_dynamic_sampling integer 1
    optimizer_features_enable string 9.2.0
    optimizer_index_caching integer 0
    optimizer_index_cost_adj integer 100

    optimizer_mode string CHOOSE
I've to change other parameters e.g. shared_pool_size in the same init.ora file and it's effective after shutdown/restart.
Please advise how to set optimizer_features_enable.

9.x has something called SPFILE also...
    SQL> show parameter spfile
If it shows a file name value, something like spfilesid.ora, changes to init.ora would make not much difference :)

  • G5 startup problem after shutdown of frozen installation of new software...

    Hi all
I got a massive problem. My G5 was installing software from dvd and got stuck for some reason. Nothing worked and I had to shut the whole system down. When I now start the G5 it comes up with a white screen with just a small folder in the middle of the screen displaying a question mark and alternates that with the apple face. Besides this the fans go mental and after a minute or so I have to shut it down again. Mouse and Keyboard are responseless:(
What can I do to get it starting up again? - I need the data on the system drive as I did not have time to back it up yet:((((

It lost its pointer to the startup disk, so you are seeing the "?" which equals "Can't find system"
The directory and file system likely are corrupt and need to be repaired.
Before installing, always insure one or two backups, one that is bootable. And a copy of Disk Warrior is handy.
Boot from another drive using the OPTION key, hard drive, firewire, DVD and repair your system.
Backup first, is always faster and less hassle and good insurance policy.
Use SuperDuper; Apple Restore in Disk Utility.
If you can't use the OPTION key or boot from CD/DVD, then pull the drive and put it in a FireWire case for later repair and recovery.
And do make sure you have a clean safe fresh Apple OS boot drive that is ONLY used for emergency maintenance, repairs, etc.

    HELP !!
My main experience is with M/S SQL Server. I am taking an Oracle class and am having a really weird problem. If I log into SQL Plus with SYSDBA privileges and initiate a SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE, it shuts down successfully, but I am never able to startup (although I can startup from the Database Control or by re-booting). This is a new install for school and I have never been able to make it work. and Yes, I have waited more than a minute for the LISTENER to try and re-start.

  • Startup open ORA_12514 error after Shutdown, just upgraded 9i to 10g

    Hi,
Noobe here, again! Cheers and happy New Year to all!
How should I edit script to start db that has been shutdown prior to backup?
We are having a problem with backups, failure is occurring executing SQL*Plus startup after shutdown. I successfully upgraded our 9i to 10g, 10.2.0.5.0 on Windows server 2003, 32-bit. We have a back_script.bat that runs all this, the only edits that I had to make within this were the names for the new Oracle services, but that is not a problem. When I run through the actions in the batch file, it fails at the sql>startup open; action, throws the error "ORA-12514 TNS:listener does not currently nkow of service requested in connect descriptor" What is different here between 9i and 10g that now this doesn't work? By commenting out the line calling our oracle_stop_start.sql I am getting successful >exp dumps, but there could be processes running 'cause I'm not stopping everything before proceeding with the export.
I have a complete image of the physical server running in a virtual that I am able to test on. Hopefully I'll not put too much info in here, but here is some background! Both the batch file and little stop_start script predate my involvement.
Here are the pertinent statements in our backup_script.bat:
    SET NLS_LANG=AMERICAN_AMERICA.UTF8
    SET ORACLE_SID=wind
net stop Windchill3_MethodServer (the third party application that uses the database wind)
    sqlplus "system/manager@wind as sysdba" @D:\ptc\windchill\backups\oracle_stop_start
    exp system/manager@wind owner=guest file=......\oracle_backup.dmp.....etc, etc, etc
    Here is oracle_stop_start.sql
    shutdown immediate;
    startup open;
    quit
As stated earlier, this has worked at least since 2007 when the last edits were made to the batch file. Now it fails at the sql>startup open; throwing the error ORA-12514. I can duplicate this executing each statement in a dos shell. The shutdown command closes, dismounts and shuts down the database. I have tried changing the startup statement to sql>STARTUP OPEN wind; but that makes no difference. I have found that if I exit sql*plus and log back in /nolog (in the same shell window) then I can restart the instance, what I do is:
    sqlplus /nologsql>connect sys/* as sysdba;
    sql>startup open wind;
This does successfully start the Oracle instance, mount and open the database. How else might I do this? I can certainly duplicate these actions, adding the necessary lines to oracle_start_stop.sql, but is there a better & cleaner way to do this? Right now I just want to make these existing scripts work. Once that is done, then I'm going to investigate and learn more about RMAN and datapump export/import and update our backup procedures.
    Any thoughts & suggestions?
    Thank you,
    Tom

It might be a difference in behaviour between 9i and 10g. It looks like you are connecting through sql*net (sqlplus "system/manager@wind as sysdba), so the ORACLE_SID setting is not part of your connection. When the database is shutdown you are no longer connected to any database. When you issue the startup command the ORACLE_SID is not set so there is no service specified.
If you are running this on the database server, try setting the ORACLE_SID then running your script like:
    {code}sqlplus "system/manager as sysdba" @D:\ptc\windchill\backups\oracle_stop_start{code}
and you should still have the service set for your connection.

  • MSI P45-8D problem: reboot after loading startup services (windows seven 64bit)

    hi guys!
I decided (buying a cooler master elite 360) to keep my Memory Lover (whit ddr3/ich10r, pci-ex 2.0), which is actually the 'best purchase for me (rather than a G41 mATX) .
But then, after I had solved the problem of overheating in the pci-ex, and I put the board in its box for weeks, now has a new problem:
Continuous blocks & reboots just after loading startup services windows seven!
    The setup is this:
     Windows Seven 64bit
     MOBO MSI Memory Lover
     CPU Xeon L3110
     VGA MSI Radeon HD5450 1gb ddr2 fanless
     DDR3 1333 4GB
PSU Tacens Radix V mATX 35Watt Velociraptor + Caviar Green
     DVD burner (sata)
Esi pci-ex sound card connect module
Creative Xtreme Gamer (disconnected for now)
I have many ram models that I can put in:
     kingston lovo 4gb 1333
     4g-skill eco 4gb 1333
     adata green 4gb 1333
     corsairs white 8gb 1600
All memories can work undervolt at 1.35volt, but-of course-I keep them in standard 1.5Volt for more stability
I also tried a single 2gb stick at a time, but nothing has changed
when the system reboots (I infer) windows finished loading all the startup services (including antivirus, network drivers, audio drivers, etc. ..). and I can say with near certainty, that the last major service that is loaded, is the catalyst control center ...
I suspect an incompatibility with Memory Lover &  the Video Card's ATI driver ..
I also tried to uninstall and clean with driver sweeper, but the problem remains ..
Besides this I also have a problem with the temperature of the processor xeon l3110 (45watt tdp)
cpu heatsink as I have a Arctic Freezer LP 11 (Capacity Cooling 100W).
with thermal compound pre-installed I had 60/70 degrees recorded.
I changed the thermal compound with the famous Prolimatech pk-1 and now I measure 80/90 degrees ...(and I've changed a lot of thermal compound that I put with my eyes closed)
now, this is not possible because:
-I know the processor, I kept in daily use at 3Ghz with a noctua nh-U9B se2, and in summer never exceeded 40 degrees (d 'winter was about 30 degrees)
     - Either with the Scythe kama thermo, that with my finger, the heatpipes of the Freezer 11 LP, the Mosfet, the NB & SB are all cold .. the 5450 is 40 degrees or so, but it is fanless, and its temperature is in its normal ..
What can you tell me of my two problems:
     - Continuous reboots after loading windows seven
     - High temperature cpu (probably not real)
I remind you that a few months ago the team & Memory Lover Xeon L3110 worked perfectly.
The PSU is a new 350Watt Tacens Radix V mATX ... the system at idle consumes 70/80 watts (measured at the wall) ... I think it Is not a problem of the little power supply for the needs of my system ..
and anyway I can try to use an old Enermax 450watt Liberty, which I keep for emergencies..
     thanks
     max

    guys,
     I solved the problem!
the sink was installed wrong, and did not touch on the processor!!!
the problem was the mosfets around the cpu that make thickness in height ..
the thermal paste was put well and ... still immaculate!
processor took about 20 (or more) of restarts and very high working temperatures!
     it rocks!!
I can now say that the 'AC Freezer 11 LP is sensational!
The Xeon L3110 (with EIST, C1E & Acpi active together, That downclok it) works now to 23-25 degrees!!
     I have installed the ddr3 kingston 4gb Lovo 1333 + 8GB Corsair 1600 1.35Vram white.
(with 12GB, I can easily do a large Ramdisk for temporary files).
I installed hd5450 driver manually, but still the catalyst control center does not appear at startup
here is the screen of the situation:
finally...but how did I doubt the quality of this MSI board?

  • Satellite L505D-S5965 got shutdown, hibernate and sleep problem after Windows 7 upgrade

I bought my Satellite L505D-S5965 last August. Everything worked fine on Vista. Last month I upgraded it to Windows 7 (Home premium, build 7600), then it started having problem to shutdown, hibernate and sleep. Half of the time, it will shutdown, hibernate or sleep just fine, however, the other half of the time it just never turns off.
For shutdown, it will go to the shutdown screen for 10 minutes until the a blue screen comes up, telling something about windows experience a crash and dumping memory, then it restarts itself.
For hibernation and sleep, it will go to the normal black screen but the hard disk light never turns off (i.e. the hardisk would keep running forever).
It will be a big help if someone can help me with that, I just don't want to keep doing the "hard turn off".

Hey thats great posting and detailed, thank you! :)
Im wondering how you found it out.
But I want to add something: Before you do or change something in Windows registry, make a backup of it. In worst case you restore the old Windows registry. Just to be sure ;)

  • PSL40E xp restart after shutdown only on AC power supply

uncheck automatically restart in the system failure section
    disable wake up on lan
    clear installation
    sp2 or sp3, same problem
    all drivers install
the microsoft knowledge base (Roxios Easy CD...) same problem, restart after shutdown
flash bios, hm bios only for vista and win 7 but no for xp on toshiba drivers page...

Does this happen when LAN cable is connected to your notebook only?

  • After shutdown I have to log in twice.  The first time it starts to load, then goes black, then gives me login page again.  Do you think I have a virus?  Or is this Yosemite bug?

Just updated to Yosemite on my MBP.  After shutdown now when I login, it starts the process (the bar starts to move), then the screen goes black, then it asks me to login again and this time it is a successful startup.  Is this a Yosemite bug or do I have a virus?  I also have some funny tiling on the screen at youtube and some other websites.  Another bug?

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • ITunes RADIO is not working.  "iTunes could not connect to the iTunes Store. Make sure your internet connection is active and try again." Try as I may, as many as ten attempts, trying to connect after restart, after shutdown, nothing works. Just so -  iTu

    iTunes RADIO is not working.
“iTunes could not connect to the iTunes Store. Make sure your internet connection is active and try again.” Try as I may, as many as ten attempts, trying to connect after restart, after shutdown, nothing works. Just so …
iTunes STORE not “connectable” with my otherwise perfectly-working internet connection, viable, up and running for all other uses.
Simply put, firstly, I can't connect to the internet when I click on Radio.  People are quite suspicious that this is Apple incompetence or your company's famous arrogance for this commonly-suffered problem that you won't or “can’t” fix.
Read the many web comments and you won’t be pleased with yourselves: the suspicion is that if you ruin internet radio on iTunes, Apple will somehow make more money on music downloads, etc. Bull.
Also, thirdly, my old playlist of 20 or so internet radio stations in the Ambient category STILL PLAYS !
Then fourth, I installed the latest available version of QuickTime Player 7.app Version 7.6.6 but it didn’t solve the problem either. I had QuickTime Player.app Version 10.2, but substituted what Apple website said was the latest, LOWER NUMBERED QuickTime Player version of 7.6.6
Fifth, I can't connect to iTunes store no matter what I do or what user group's advice I try. So I can’t buy or download anything from iTunes. Bad for business.
Sixth, I updated to the latest version of iTunes but this weird problem remains. All suggested Apple fixes or user group fixes are useless. Where is Apple’s famous technical competency, vaunted customer support?, and user-friendly product reputation? Get it back, please.
Solve this problem of yours ASAP for us, your numerous disgruntled, dissatisfied customers of iTunes. You can do better, should, and really –in all fairness- must.
    ===============================================================
NOTE:  no password for iTunes exists in my Keychain. Is this a problem?
Apple ACCOUNT ID, and iTunes ID password, works but not to access iTunes with my healthy internet connection.
Apple store id It works via direct internet connetion but not through iTunes.  Very strange.

  • Problems after upgrade bios to v4.3 - P67A-GD65

    Hi to everybody,
I was having a problems after upgrade bios to v4.3 of my mainboard P67A-GD65.
After upgraded bios version (FW) its interface was changed and seemed better. also some specifiactions upgraded that i am now able to follow information of bios in my windows. with Control Center.
    1) first of all after bios upgrade XMP memory section can only be enable şf ş choose OC geniue on. but with this my cpu warm till 98C degree. because i have only stock cpu cooler of intel.
in normal mode xmp can not be activated so that my memory that corsair vengeance dd3 1600mhz works at 1333mhz only.
Also there was information about what is new in this version of bios fw as:
    - Enhanced PCI-E display card performance.
    - Improved memory compatibility.
    2) second problem that i have i wanted to turn cpu leds which were located above cpu slot blue leds. once i turn them off and it is ok. but when shutdown computer and restart it turn on itself.
so may be there have benn occured a problem that mb can not save edited settings correctly?
    3) For last i could not find Winki 3 OS/linuz anywhere is there a link to it to integrate to my mb?
Thanks for your replies from now on.

I think you had better to flash back to beta 4.39 bios, here : https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=164135.msg1214789#msg1214789
And use and install on USB key MSI Forum HQ USB flashing tool from here : https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=108079.msg800577#msg800577
    Flash using method 1.
And tell us if that works.
thank you for reply that fast i will try asap and tell here.
Btw, have you ever face a problem as i wrote above?
