Recording a radio show with Garageband '09

Hi guys,
I am looking to move into the Garageband world now that I have just purchased a brand new iMac.
My main purpose for Garageband would be to import audio and record my voice as a talk over for a radio show.
I can see there is the built-in ducking which is fantastic as that immediately would make my process alot easier.
I am just not sure about the recording aspect in terms of real-time.
For a live radio show usually a piece of music would play and the radio announcer would voice over it.
This is what I would like to do however I am not sure if Garageband does this in real-time or not?
I have a Rode Podcaster mic which I'm sure will be easily recognised and used within Garageband also.
Anyone who has any experience or knowledge with this particular scenario, I would love to hear from you!
Much appreciate your assistance and feedback
Cheers

Thanks HangTime,
I knew I would need to do the import of audio and record voice.
Just more concerned about the real-time recording eg. does the ducking occur should a song be playing live and I do a voice over, all whilst recording.

  • A script to record radio shows with mplayer

    Hi,
    I have the tendency of missing all my favorite radio shows so I wrote this little script I can now use as a cron job. Basically it uses mplayer to dump the stream, and kills it after desired time. I'm not posting this to community contributions (yet), since it's far from fail safe. I don't have much time to put into it, and it works for me as it it, but if you find it useful and want to help improving it, please do so!! I really could use some help checking the passed command line arguments, I haven't done these before.
    My cron job is starting a couple of minutes before the actual broadcast and I set the length so that the recording continues a couple of minutes after the end time. After it's all done, I use mp3splt to cut the extras. ..that's of course if the stream is an mp3.. Don't know if there's a splitting utility for oggs?
    And the script:
    #!/bin/sh
    # usage:
    # stream_dump.sh -u URL -l length -d directory -o filename -t filetype -i
    # -u stream URL or a path to a playlist file (.pls, m3u..)
    # -l lenght in sleep format, see sleep --help (use quotes if more than one arg!)
    # -o base name of recorded file
    # -d directory to save the file in
    # -t filetype (mp3, ogg, wma ..)
    # -i ignore postfix, see POSTFIX below
    # Set some defaults
    DUMPDIR="/path/to/your/dir"
    LENGTH=60m
    FILE=StreamDump
    FILETYPE=mp3
    POSTFIX=_`date +%y-%m-%d_%H:%M`
    # Begin script
    while [ $# -gt 0 ]; do
    case "$1" in
    -u)
    STREAM="$2"
    shift
    -l)
    LENGTH="$2"
    shift
    -o)
    FILE="$2"
    shift
    -t)
    FILETYPE=".$2"
    shift
    -d)
    DUMPDIR="$2"
    shift
    -i)
    POSTFIX=""
    esac
    shift
    done
    [ ! -d "${DUMPDIR}" ] && mkdir -p "${DUMPDIR}"
    DUMPFILE="${DUMPDIR}/${FILE}${POSTFIX}${FILETYPE}"
    mplayer -quiet -dumpstream -playlist "${STREAM}" \
    -dumpfile "${DUMPFILE}" &
    PID="$!"
    sleep "${LENGTH}"
    kill "${PID}"
    # End script
    Comments, improvements and anything else accepted!

    mp3splt can work on mp3 files as well as ogg files.
    Option parsing can be done alternatively with the 'getopts' shell builtin or getopt(1).
    Using atd may be more convenient (for a non-recurring action) than setting up a cronjob.
    Mplayer has an option '-endpos' (not sure if it works on streams):
    -endpos <[[hh:]mm:]ss[.ms]|size[b|kb|mb]> (also see -ss and -sb)
    Stop at given time or byte position.
    NOTE: Byte position may not be accurate, as it can only stop
    at a frame boundary. When used in conjunction with -ss option,
    -endpos time will shift forward by seconds specified with -ss.
    EXAMPLE:
    -endpos 56
    Stop at 56 seconds.
    -endpos 01:10:00
    Stop at 1 hour 10 minutes.
    -ss 10 -endpos 56
    Stop at 1 minute 6 seconds.
    -endpos 100mb
    Encode only 100 MB.

  • CD "radio show" with tracks

    I would like to create a "radio show" of about an hours duration with talk and music. I'd like to burn it to a CD with tracks to let the listener skip to favorite bits, or over bad bits! What I would like to do is take one big podcast and save pieces of it in iTunes as separately named "songs."
    First, I tried creating a podcast and the format was fine, but I couldn't segment it into CD tracks. I tried using the cycle button to limit a selection, but if I export to iTunes, GarageBand exports the entire podcast.
    I could record each CD track as a separate podcast.
    Other ideas?

    Thanks, Larry, for your comment. Although I've been using Macs for 20 years I'm still surprise myself my missing the obvious.
    I'll investigate the difference between a "podcast" and a "regular" project.
    It bugged me a little that I didn't get a dialog box that said "Do you want to export just this portion of your podcast?"
    With some planning I could create my podcast, rather, CD cast as a series of segments, all recorded separately. However, for continuity's sake I wanted to record the whole thing, then break it into different tracks for a CD.
    There may be better ways to achieve what I want to do than by podcast, although the podcast setup looked ideal in terms of voice-overs, music and jingles.
    Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • How can I record my guitar amp with garageband?

    Hello, new member and new to recording with garageband!
    I would like to capture the live sound of my guitar amp using garageband. I know there are many modelling and FX options using GB, but I really want to hear how my amp sounds.
    I'm using the following:
    -macbook pro and garageband
    -Presonus Inspire 1394 interface
    Traynor YCV 50 all-tube guitar amp
    -Shure SM57 mic
    -Yamaha SG700 electric guitar
    So far, the results have been dismal. My main instinct was to keep all levels in the green and go for it. I used the most basic setting in GB with no effects added. All attempts sound like I'm playing into a garbage can.
    Any quick tips would be appreciated, please and thanks!

    Your setup should be getting excellent results.
    Are you using a real instrument track?
    Are you sure garageband is getting the input from the Shure and not the built in mic?
    Is the mic close to the speaker / pointed at the speaker / have you tried pointing it at different parts of the speaker?

    Does anybody know how to record an electric guitar with GarageBand, i already have an audio interface and everything is already plugged in and hooked up, i just need to know how to set it up within GarageBand so that i can record.

    You might want to use the GB forum(s) instead, as I suspect you'll have other questions etc. Good luck in any case.

  • MacBook with GarageBand as a recording studio for a radio program?

    Hey all.
    My former Pastor, who is now head of a mission organization, is going to start recording a radio program. I told him I thought that the MacBook, which he has, would do the job with minimal extras.
    My question is, have I told him correctly? If so, is anyone out there doing similarly? Do you know what format is required for radio? What extras do you recommend he get?(I thought a good headphone/mic combo)
    Thanks for the replies in advance. You guys have always been a wealth of knowledge that most computer makers support can't compare to.
    Nick
    PS-My apologies as this is a double post from the MacBook categories. I should have posted here instead.

    Take a look here for aninterface:
    http://www.bulletsandbones.com/GB/Interfaces.html
    I would say the inspire is my #1 choice for his application, as an interface. However he could go as simple as just a mixing console, like in the bottom row (the former would give the best results, the latter would still offer really good results)
    For a mic:
    http://www.bulletsandbones.com/GB/Microphones.html
    I would probably pick the sm58. The BETA 87a is a phenomenal mic (I use one), though that alone is $250. The 58 would pick up less room sounds, the 87 would pick up everything
    as an alt solution, the middle row are USB mics, the first two being very good quality, very reasonably priced, and would require no interface.

I can't record sound from  mixer Behringer X1622USB using USB out. when I connect the mixer to iMac via USB  appears USB Audio CODEC on Sound and Preferences but I can't get no sound from mixer to iMac only sound from iMac to mixer. I only can record sound using microphone line in. Please help.

    Eric,
    Thanks for your reply. Realtek audio works only in playback. There is a stereo mix in the mixer but the recording controls are not operable with no sliders in the mixer for any recording option. Slider controls appear to be grayed out. Can't figure out how to enable them. Downloaded newest drivers to no avail.
    The M Audio control panel has no apparent option for recording stereo mix. Adobe ignores the sound from the DVD or CD and shows flatline.
    I'm trying to record the sound from the DVD not rip the track.
    When I go to Audio Driver Setup and select Audition 3.0 windows sound, there is no input device installed.
    I'm thinking of going back to a decent internal Soundblaster card like I have on my 8 year old machine I am replacing.

  • Air or Pro for Recording vocals with GarageBand or PT and Producing

    I'm considering buying a MacBook and would like to get a new Air. I will be using it mainly for recording my vocals on beats that I have bought on iTunes. I'm also going to be taking a couple of Coursera classes on music production. Can the new Air's handle GarageBand or Pro Tools well? I've been using my iPhone 4S with GarageBand to record but I would like to do more editting of my vocals with Pro Tools. The reason I like the Air is b/c it is light and easy to transport.

    One thing with vocalists, I can think of, is to show them the input device, and have them watch the clip meter. After a few takes, if they are somewhat savvy at singing into a mic, they'll start to back off on strong notes, and moving in on subtle notes. If you watch a pro singer on stage, you'll see them pulling the mic in close for soft stuff, and backing it way off for the strong notes. In the studio, the same techniques can be used, but the person has to back away, rather than a hand held mic pulled away.
    Hardware can help this to an extent, but the singer has to take some action to get the best performance recorded. If I were going to use hardware, it'd probably be limiting more so than compression. Limiting can keep your signal under control, without doing too much to the dynamics. I'd prefer to save compression for post, so I can decide what sounds best. I used to have a female vocalist with an amazing voice. i was NEVER able to capture her properly on tape, since I had no pre processing at all. She is still in this area, and I have invited her to come record some vox for me, because I want to see if I can now get a grip on them. If I ever do, she'll be featured on an upcoming CD

  • Can i record voice with garageband?

    Can i record voice with garageband?

    Hi,
    I am a Garage Band dunce (first time user). I’ve imported a guitar track as track 1.
    I launched a “new basic track” with no effects for the vocal track, but cannot get any vocals to show up on the meter before recording.
    I can click on track one (my guitar track) and I can see the meter move when speaking into the mic, but when I click on track two, I get nothing from the mic.
    I’m sure the answer is obvious, but I don’t see it. Any tips?
    Thanks,
    Terry

  • Recording an online radio show

    At my school we have a radio show that one can listen to online with Apple's Quicktime (though I swear we can also listen to it through iTunes, but I'm getting that information off the website) and I am looking for a way to record my show. I do know that I can use garage band and record what I say and then put the music in there afterwards, but that would be rather tiresome and a length process (in my point of view) and I was wondering if there was a program I could download or that was already on the macbook that would allow me to download a streaming radio station online.
    thanks!

    Audio Hijack or RaddioLover will work.

    You should be syncing your contacts with an app on your computer or cloud service (iCloud, Gmail, Yahoo, etc), and not relying on a backup.  If you haven't been doing this, start now and then restore your old backup.  You will then be able to sync the new contacts back into the phone.  However, you will lose all messages, etc newer thant the backup.

    A bit late for this advice now, but hopefully you'll know what to do next time.
    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
    Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
    See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
    When you get it all working make a backup!
