Recording to tape question

I am trying to record a scene from the timeline to tape. I have hooked up the camera and can get sound to record and, as I scroll through the timeline, the footage in the camera monitor keeps pace with the sequence in final cut. However, when I push play the the footage on the camera monitor is static (it stays on the photo that I started when I hit play but does not keep pace as the timeline plays in final cut).
Can anyone tell me why this is happening?
Jim Leo

Actually, I have learned that recording in high def and then sending back to record to tape in standard def is possible.
To do so, you need to output the sequence as a quicktime movie. Then import the movie as a new sequence and set the clip setting to standard def. Some rendering will be required and after that, it is good to go to burn the footage (that was originally high def) to standard def on tape.

Here's a stupid question for you guys who know what you're doing. How do I access or find this "MediaSource Organizer" that will allow me to record cassette tapes onto my hard dri've? I bought a new computer and had the manufacturer install an SBAudigy sound card for me and as such I'm not exactly sure which one I have but I stipulated that I wanted the capability to download cassette tapes onto my hard dri've. The only file I have found related to the sound card is one called "Creative" in the "Program Files" of my C: dri've. Further digging reveals various icons marked "Audigy", "SBAudigy", "InterVideo" but none of them, when clicked upon, open up into any kind of a useful program. I do have the "InterVideo" icon on my desktop but thorough searching of this program has not revealed any options for recording outside sounds onto the hard dri've. I also have "Windows Media Center" for Windows XP. Any enlightenment on how I can record cassette tapes onto my computer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,
    Jeremy D.

  • What cables do I need to record a tape cassette onto my hard drive?

I want to record vinyl records and tape cassettes to my mac.  I know I can use the quicktime player,
but what type of cables do I need to hook up to the in line on my mac?

Tape cassettes - easiest way is tape machine headphone jack to Mac Line in socket with a standard mini phono plug (3.5mm)
Vinyl records - depends on the player. Most ordinary record players will need a pre-amp to use with the line-in socket. Cables required will be dictated by the particular equipment.
You can get USB record decks built for the purpose.
QuickTime will do the job, but I use Audacity for more versatility with editing, noise reduction etc.

  • How can I capture video directly into FCP without recording to tape first?

I hooked my Sony VX2000 to the computer via firewire and opened the Log and Capture dialog box. The video from my camera shows correctly in the preview window.
I click the Capture Now button and the capture window opens but no video displayed. The message below the window says "Waiting for Timecode".
I guess the camera doesn't send timecode when it's not recording so I press the record button. Now video shows up in the capture window. After 16 frames it freezes and an error box pops up that says "Capture Now has reached the end of the tape. All existing footage between the point where you started the capture and the end of the tape was captured successfully."
Foiled again! This has been a problem from time to time when I want to capture video from a source that does not supply timecode.
Is there any settings I can change to capture video directly from a camera using FCP without having to record it to tape in one step and then capture it in a second step?

I thought I had tried that. Thanks, that was the answer.
I am aware of the danger of not having tape backup. Having worked with the new Panasonic AG-HVX200 it is a chore to free up the P2 cards fast enough to keep from starving the camera crew. Copying the P2 contents to a single hard drive is the practice but leaves the whole shoot at the mercy of a single point of failure.
As far as my capturing directly to HD, it isn't a problem for short podcasts that could be recreated quickly if lost. Also, I can still record to tape in the camera but avoid the second step of capture when I'm in my edit bay anyway.
    Peace,

  • How to record vhs tape to mac

how to record vhs tape to mac

Most "on the fly" digitization for the Mac was abandoned as "just too fussy" for successful daily use. Instead, cameras that pre-digitized and passed the digitized packets (with NO time contraints) were adopted instead.
The Hardware to do this capture is now old and cranky, and never got substantially cheaper. It is not a good value.
The affordable way to transfer VHS tapes to digital form today is to find a local service to do a one-time transfer for a fee.

  • I recorded VCR tape onto DVD-R but will not play on my MacBook Pro. I have already recorded multiple DVDs. How can I get it to play on my Mac?

I recorded VCR tape onto DVD-R but will not play on my MacBook Pro. I have already recorded multiple DVDs. How can I get it to play on my Mac?

"I recorded VCR tape onto DVD-R"
    How? Using what equipment/software?
"The DVD  plays on the device on which it was recorded."
Just a guess: You're using a VCR-DVD combo recorder. DVDs produced in this way will play on the device that made them, but won't play on anything else until they're "finalized." In fact, Macs will recognize unfinalized DVDs as blank discs until the discs are finalized. Check the manual that came with the recording device for instructions.

  • Record/Rip old vinyl/turn table records, cassette tapes, etc.?

    Hello.
How easy, cheap, and quick is it to record/rip old vinyl/turn table records, cassette tapes, etc. to iTunes, iPods, and iPhones on a MacBook Pro (2008's Mac OS X 10.5.8 and 2012's Mac OS X 10.8.4)? Does it need special audio adapters, cables, etc.? Without driver support I hope since it would be used a lot and for a long time.
    Thank you in advance.

I have seen iMic at Best Buy before. Not as a regular stock item thoug.
I actually got mine at Radio Shack a few years ago for $10.
Oooh, RadioShack. I forgot that one, but no luck. Best Buy has it online, but it requires an online order. Bah!
I did get an e-mail re(ply/sponse) from Griffin Technology and told me that Best Buy, Target, and Walmart should have iMic.

  • Will FCPX "direct capture" w/o simultaneous recording on tape?

FCPX allows direct capture/import from my Firewire-connected Canon HDV camera only when I am simultaneously recording to a tape installed in the camera. iMovie allows direct capture WITHOUT simultaneous recording on tape.  Is there any way for FCPX to capture video truly DIRECTLY, i.e., without simultaneous recording on tape?  ... Thanks!

FCP had separate device control options, which are not available in the current version. The application does very little for tape based formats. There are other tools that can capture from tape or from live ingest, AJA and Black Magic have their own. You might try the QT player.

  • Recording Cassette Tape - Dolby B & C  Question

    Hi,
I am recording speaking voice from a cassette tape that was recorded without Dolby.
I have experimented using Dolby B & C on my tape deck, as I play the cassette, recording it into a Soundtrack Pro project. This reduces the tape hiss quite nicely and does not seem to affect the speaking voice frequency range (80 - 1100 Hz).
The one thing I did notice is that Dolby C seems to "pump" a little, probably due to more of the "ambient" sound (tape hiss) being removed from the pauses.
The Dolby B example seemed to be the best.
I have tried various EQ Effects to reduce the hiss after recording and the result has not been very good.
Of course, after adjusting the amplitude, applying Compressor and Limiter, some of the hiss is made more audible. But, this seems to be just what is going to happen with noise.
Has anyone else done something similar and can offer some suggestions?
    Thanks, Ken

Did you try STP's noise reduction? It does a pretty good thing. Strong equalization does remove the noise, but also clearness and detail in sound. (High frequencies in a voice can easily reach 2000 Hz). Dolby playback on a non-dolby recording is like using a preset filter, I would only EQ manually, to have more control. With Noise reduction software, you don't have to filter out all high frequencies anymore to get rid of noise.
To use noise reduction in STP:
Open a soundfile in the editor. Click and drag over the wavevorm to create a selection of nothing/noise. Click Process > Set noise print, then undo the selection by clicking once on the wavevorm. Click Process > Reduce noise. In the Popup window you can make adjustments. Play around a little, and you'll be amazed of what it can do..

  • Render and record, export to tape question?

    Hi,
I have finished a ten minute HDV project.
I now want to export to tape. (HDV Sony V1e) When I hit export - tape then hit the render and record box. This then brings up the Export to HDV (transcoding to HDV) box.
The problem I have is that 10 min project trancodes for about ten minutes then just goes back to the render and record dialogue box, without the exporting to tape.
I then tried exporting a smaller chunk (25seconds) and this renders in about three minutes and exports fine!!
So, I think my camera etc is fine.
Why won't my ten min movie render and record?
Sometimes it does give me a low memory warning too. I have set the preference from performance to memory already.
    Please help!
    thanks
    scott

    Hi Scott,
I am having this very same problem.
Did you manage to solve it? If so, how??
I've been trying to figure it out for the past 5 days and it's driving me crazy!!!
I exported a 3 minutes sequence and it exported to tape fine. But when I tried to do the entire film - 55 minutes - it began the 'transcoding' then just stopped and went back to the 'render and record' pop up without any error message or anything.
I am trying to get from CS3 to a Sony HDV deck.
    Thanks,
    Alicia

  • Question about recording video tapes to IDVD?

I have a Mac OS X version 10.3.9. I’m pretty stupid so please be patient with me. I have some old VCR tapes with important family memories on them that I want to save digitally and than burn to DVD. Can I do this with my IDVD 5? I’d have to hook my VCR up to the Mac, right? But, obviously, the VCR, an old 4-Head JVC, doesn’t have a FireWire port only a RCA audio & video out. So is there a way to do this?? Thanks for any info.

You will need either a miniDV camera or an AV/DV converter box to connect your VCR to your Mac.
With a miniDV camera you could record your VHS tapes to miniDV tapes and then capture the miniDV tapes into iMovie; this also has the benefit of giving you a digital copy of your VHS movies on miniDV tape.
Second, most miniDV cameras are able to do what is called analog/digital passthrough which means you could connect your VCR to your miniDV camera AND connect your miniDV camera to your Mac at the same time and then just play your VCR tapes right into iMovie (you would still use iMovie's capture feature to do this). You might have to select/change some of the settings in your miniDV camera to turn on this feature, one of which is the audio setting which should be set to 16-bit audio.
Third alternative is to use an AV/DV converter box (the Canopus ADVC110 is very popular and great quality, runs about $250). Like the case above using a miniDV camera, you would connect your VCR to the converter box AND connect the converter box to your Mac via FW. You would play your VHS tape and use iMovie capture to get it into your Mac.

  • Camera tape question

I looking at purchasing my first video camera and leaning towards a Canon HV20. My question is this: Will I be able to read any footage from miniDV tape into my computer? For example, a relative has a video camera that also uses miniDV tape, will I be able to import the footage to my Mac thru my camera, even if it was originally recorded on a different brand of camera? I hope this makes sense. Thanks!

Most likely, but without knowing that the other device is and exactly what it's shooting no one can say for sure.

  • Tape drive - cleaning tape - question

    Hi Gurus,
I have a questions concerning tape backup.
Should I erase tape before recording backup ?

    Hi,
You don't have to erase a tape to take a backup.
Erasing a tape with a cleaning tape is a maintenance done on the media.

  • What is the best software to record DAT tape to computer?

    Hi guys,
I have some old DAT recording of my rock band from 1971-74. I want to transfer the DAT to my Macbook Pro retina. My plan would be to hit the "play" button on the DAT and record the whole tape to the MacBook Pro...and then go back, separate the songs I want to keep and add some EQ and compression (if I can figure out how that works ). I have the setup ready to go from a Behringer UCA222 from the DAT into USB on the MacBook Pro. I also plan to send the recording to my external thunderbolt HD. And I probably want to save the recordings at a higher quality and then to mp3.
What would you suggest would be the best software to use to transfer on a project like this?
I don't have Logic, and don't want to spend the $ for this project. I am looking at using GarageBand, but don't know if that eats up too much HD space and computer processing. I've read that Audacity might be an option, but not sure how the quality would compare to GarageBand.
Any other suggestions or comments would be really appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Bob

I use to face this issue every now and then (as a freelancer) when I use to cut on FCP7.
if the material is DV and was captured using Sony VEGAS, Premiere or Edius, the footage generally worked fine. You'll find most people will tell you to convert it regardless, however I found no issues working with them.
A problem you'll definitely face is HDV material. Most PC editing software write HDV in their own codec, which can't be read in FCP.
The only thing I can think of is to try converting HDV meaterial to QuickTime using something like MPEG Streamclip, or something similar.
    Good luck

  • Mini DV Camcorder Has Sound Drop off When Recording to Tape

I'm wondering what my correct a problem with a camcorder... audio seems to stop recording after 45-50 min. Model PV-DV530. Would setting to NTSC Firewire Basic.

Unless you are using a Canon camcorder, you probably should be using DV-NTSC Firewire - not Basic.
Have you fully rendered the project before output?
Have you done an "audio mixdown" (look it up) before output?
Do you have the material on a non-system drive? Is that drive less than 75% full?
If these things don't work, try exporting a self-contained version of the timeline, import that back into the project, put it in it's own sequence then send that out to tape.
    good luck,
    x
