RecordSet and ResultSet

When Should I use RecordSet and when ResultSet?

But how does importing an entire package makeany
difference to which class you actually use?Am I missing something? In what package isRecordSet?
No idea. I'm just curious why importing an entire
package would help make this decision. Hadn't even
considered where RecordSet comes from. It's not part
of the JDK, AFAIKI don't think that the poster wanted you to read it as an import but rather as "you should use the classes within the java.sql package when you can".

    Question/Problem:
    How can I know if a recordset is null or empty?In general, you have to call next() until it returns false. A ResultSet does not necessarily contain all the rows queried. JDBC may make multiple calls to the database for large queries, so even knowing a ResultSet's size (which you can't do anyways) wouldn't necessarily give you the query size.

  • Closing Statements and ResultSets

    I just recently realized that you need to close Statements and ResultSets in order to avoid getting the "Too many cursors"-message.
    My question is:
    Do you need to close both Statements and ResultSets?
    - not that it's a problem...
    if so:
    Does it matter which one you close first?

    I usually place the stmt.close() code in my finally block, to ensure that the statement gets closed, even if a SQLException occurs during the query/update. The ResultSet does not explicitly have to be closed, ... it is automatically closed when the Statement is closed, or if a new query is run on the same statement.

  • JDBC: Closing Connection does it close statement and resultset

    In my application I am facing ORA-0100 Maximum open cursors exceeded problem. We are executing quite a few queries and stored procedures before we close the connection object. But in few places statements and resultsets are not closed. Can these be a problem? Shouldn't they be automatically closed when the connection is closed?
    We are executing this block of code in a loop.

    in few places statements and
    resultsets are not closed. Can these be a problem?Yes.

  • Statement and ResultSet Interface type of Object

    Hi,
    Can any one explains me where exactly (in which Class) the implementation of the Statement and ResultSet Interface type of Object Instance be created
    Regards
    Krishna

    I dont really understand what you are trying to ask but:
    Your JDBC driver has concrete implementations of Statement and Resultset. If you want to know what classes are being used try something like:Connection con = ??;
    Statement st = con.createStatement();
    ResultSet rs = st.executeQuery( "???" );
    System.out.println( "Connection class: " + con.getClass().getName() );
    System.out.println( "Statement  class: " + st.getClass().getName() );
    System.out.println( "ResultSet  class: " + rs.getClass().getName() );

  • Pooling Prepared Statement and Resultset

    Is their any mechanism in Weblogic by which we can pool prepared statements and
    resultset.

    Yes you can cache prepared statements. The connection pool will
    automatically cache the prepared statements (10 prepared statement was the
    limit in previous so you may want to write some startup class to load the
    imp prepared statements.). When you reuse the prepared statement the
    connection pool will pick it from its prepared statement cache. In 6.1 you
    can configure the number of prepared statements that you want to cache.
    But you cannot have multiple resultsets open for the same statement object.
    You can have cache rows though.
    Please search the bea newsgroups for more info. There are a bunch of posts
    that will be helpful to you.

  • RecordSet and Command Window bigger?

    A big problem in older DW version where the small an
    unresizeable windows for adding recordsets and commands. And now i
    have to figure out, that this problem still exists in dw cs3.
    Really - i thought dw cs3 is also made for bigger website! But they
    will have more complex databases, record sets and commands.
    See the screenshot

    Is there any possibility to resize this window (and other

  • In the Dreamweaver brim Bindings, the recordset and all of the fields of the table are not EXHIBITED

    In the Dreamweaver brim Bindings, the recordset and all of the fields of the table are not EXHIBITED. I don't know if an option of configuration adjustment exists in Dreamweaver that corrects the problem. It is Dreamweaver CS4 - Version 10.0 build 4117.

    I have traced the problem to a corrupted profile.  When I captured the images in question, I also used Color Cherckr to create a profile for processing.  When I apply that profile to the adjustments I make, I can no longer "Edit In".  If I use another profile, even one that I created using Color Checkr at a different point in time, I don't have the issue.  Something seems to have corrupted the new profile.  I will re-create the profile and see if the issue is resolved.

  • TopLink and ResultSet: ojdbc14 vs. ojdbc6 - Closed command

    Hi all,
    I have problem with ojdbc library. We updated our ojdbc library from ojdbc14 to ojdbc6. But now, we have problem with SQLExcpetion: "java.sql.SQLException Closed statement".
    We have following code:
    Object result = session.executeQuery(query, args);
    Map map = (Map)((Vector)result).firstElement();
    // the data is in data type OracleResultSetImpl !!!
    OracleResultSet out_data = (OracleResultSet) map.get(EmtasConstant.GRID_PROCEDURE_DATA_OUT);
    OracleResultSetMetaData metadata = (OracleResultSetMetaData) out_data.getMetaData();
    If we used library "ojdbc14.jar" everything works fine, we get metadata, read data from resultSet, etc... No problem!
    But if we using "ojsbc6.jar" and call getMetadata, then throws: "java.sql.SQLException: Closed command: getMetaData" .. or "ava.sql.SQLException: Closed command: next()" or whatever we call on OracleResultSet out_data (we try OracleResultSet and ResultSet too)..
    If we used "ojdbc14.jar" and I call out_data.close(), they throws same exception => Why is the ResultSet in library ojdbc6.jar closed??????
    Any idea? I'm really stuck and I all day trying to come to solve the problem, but I resolved nothing.
    Pls help!
    Thx!
    Best regards, KLD!
    Sry for my English ;)

    Yes, I have newest version of TopLink (11.1.1. ...) and Java (1.6_09).
    Or, is any option how to convert ResultSet to any "normal" java object (like hasmap,collection, list, ...)
    I returned multiple cursor objects from stored procedure, and I resolved it as follows:
    More output cursors with StoredProcedureCall?
    but now I have problem with ResultSet and i don't want call more times the procedure call (first option)...

  • Connection and Resultset opening and closing!!!

    Hi Friends,
    I have a query that returns results like this:
    col1**********col2********col3*******col4
    xx----------------        -----------yy------------zz
    xx----------------        -----------yy------------zz
    xx----------------        -----------yy------------zz
    ....I store these rows and columns in a array and close the resultset that returned me the first query.Now to get column 2 values,I run again a query which takes in col1,col3 and col4 values as parameters.So if the first query return 1000 rows,i got to run 1000 queries.So,I open a new connection each time and close that after it returns the result for each row,i.e i do this for 1000 tiimes.It gives me back the results but delays are increasing as rows increases.Is this a feasible way?Or do i've to have a single connection open,intil i get all the 1000 rows??But i think i can't run 2 resultsets at one time,please help me i'm pretty confused.
    Thanks

    Thanks Duffymo,
    I am already using Tomcat's db connection pooling,Excellent.
    and
    I guess I knw enough SQL to run this program...Sorry, no insult intended. I can't tell how versed someone is in SQL when I read the question. I'll confess that I don't consider myself an expert. My first thought would be to consult one if I knew one.
    However, I do know that excessive network roundtrips are usually the kiss of death for Java/DB interactions.
    Maybe a stored proc is a better way to go. If your logic is that complex, and can't be reduced to a JOIN, then I'd write it in a stored proc and let the database do the work, returning the result in one roundtrip.

  • Help with multiple recordsets and pulling an ID value (ASP)

    I started this discussion when first developing my project and posted on the General Tab.  I have figured out that issue (trying to get my Insert to work in ASP) but now am having trouble retrieving an ID value.  It should be simple.  I want to insert a new record into a single table and want to create a unique ID field.  I am using SQL Server and tried the Identity setting but won't be able to have admin privileges which are required to set the ID.  So, I'd like to just take the ID value from the last record and just add '1' to it to get a new unique ID manually. My INSERT portion was working, so I just decided to query the records to retrieve the last CatalogID and add '1' to get my new ID.  But it's not working!  I tried opening both a command and a recordset, but get various errors on invalid command use.
    Any help would be great!  I'm new to all of this!
    I've posted a code snippet of what I thought I should do:
    <%LANGUAGE = “VBSCRIPT” CODEPAGE=”65001”%)
    <!--#include file=”Connections/CapConnect.asp”” -->
    <%
    If (Cstr(Request(“MM_insert”)) = “form1”) Then
                    Dim MM_editCmd
                    Dim MM_Lookup
                    Dim NextCatalogID
                    Set MM_Lookup = Server.CreateObject (“ADOB.Recordset”)
                    MM_Lookup.ActiveConnection = MM_CapConnect_STRING
                    MM_Liikup.Source = “Select CatalogID From dbo.tblCatalogItems ORDERBY CatalogID Ascending”
                    MMLookup.Open
                    MM_Lookup.MoveLast
                    NextCatalogID = MM_Lookup.Fields(“CatalogID”) + 1   'this is supposed to be my new ID value
                    Set MM_Lookup = Nothing
                    Set MM_editCmd = Server.CreateObject(“ADOB.Command”)
                    MM_editCmd.ActiveConnection = MM_CapConnect_STRING
                    MM_editcmd.CommandText = “INSET INTO dbo.tblCatalogItems (CatalogID, ModelName, Description, POCName, [POCPhone]) VALUES (NextCatalogID, ?,?,?,?)
                    MM_editcmd.Prepared = True
                    MM_edit.Parameters.Append MM_editcmd.CreateParameter(“param2”, 202, 1, 100, Request.Form(“modelname”) )
                  MM_edit.Parameters.Append MM_editcmd.CreateParameter(“param3”, 202, 1, 300, Request.Form(“Description”) )
    [Subject line edited by moderator to add server model]

    Ok, you've got lots of problems. First, explain again why you are not able to modify the CatologID to be an identity column? What is the datatype of that column now?
    Next, you are going about selecting your recordset incorrectly. If you are just looking for the last value inserted, there is no need to return all values to the recordset. Just select the max value:
    MM_Liikup.Source = “Select MAX (CatalogID) From dbo.tblCatalogItems”
    Next, you have a typo in your insert statement "“INSET INTO" should be "INSERT INTO"
    Next, your CommandText is wrong. There is no ending quote, and NextCatalogID will be treated as a string literal, not a variable. Use a ? placeholder for it and use the CreateParameter method to populate it.
    Next, your command text includes 4 placeholder, but you are only populating 2.
    But even when you get this to work it will be problematic. What happens when 2 users execute this at the same time? They both read the same value for the max record and increment by one, but the first will succeed and the second will fail. That's why it is always better to use an auto increment (Identity) column.

  • Select Max and ResultSet Problem With Access

    The following code is producing a 'null pointer excepetion' error and I know why it is occurring I just do not know how to fix the problem.
    Basically I want to automitically generate a unique ID that is one number higher than the max ID (data is stored within an Access database). The ID field is made up of first and last initial taken from parsing previous login info ('JS-01', 'JS-02', ect.). If there are no IDs in the database that match your login info I want to set the new ID equal to 'JS-01' if your login is 'James Smith' for example.
    The problem is explained within the code below.
    <%
    //define resultset and statement
    ResultSet rss=null;
    ResultSet rs=null;
    Statement stmt=null;
    //HERE IS WHERE YOU PARSE THE LOGIN INFO
    String finitial = (String)session.getAttribute("vfirst");//vfirst=JIM
    String linitial = (String)session.getAttribute("vlast");//vlast=SMITH
    char f = finitial.charAt(0);
    char n = linitial.charAt(0);
    String sID = f+""+n;//NOW sID CONTAINS 'JS'
    try {
    //Using the current database connection create a statement
    stmt=con.createStatement();
    //QUERY TO SELECT MAX ID
    //NOTE: CURRENTLY THERE ARE NO IDs LIKE 'JS' IN THE DATABASE !!!!!!
    String sql="SELECT Max(ID) As MaxID FROM tblError Where ID LIKE '%"+sID+"%'" ;
    rs = stmt.executeQuery(sql);
    String newID;
    //HERE THE RESULT SET SHOULD BE NULL BUT IT IS NOT. I KNOW THIS BECAUSE WHEN I REPLACE String iID WITH A LITERAL LIKE 'JS-03' THE LOGIC WILL EXECUTE CORRECTLY AND GIVE ME 'JS-04'. IF I LEAVE THE CODE LIKE IT IS THEN I GET THE NULL POINTER VALUE ERROR BECAUSE YOU CANNOT RESOLVE "MaxID" WHEN THE RESULT SET IS NULL. IF THE RESULT SET IS NULL IT SHOULD NOT EVEN EXECUTE ANY OF THIS CODE WITHIN THE 'if' STATEMENT, BUT IT IS. SO BASICALLY JSP IS LEAVING ME WITH A MAJOR OXYMORON AND I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY ADVICE THAT WOULD HELP ME SOLVE THIS PROBLEM.
    if(rs.next()){
    String iID = rs.getString("MaxID");
    String letters = iID.substring(0,3);
    int numbers = Integer.parseInt(iID.substring(3,5));
    numbers = numbers + 1;
    if(numbers < 10){
    newID = letters + "0" + numbers;}
    else{
    newID = letters + numbers;
    else{//IF THERE IS NO RESULT SET THAN THE ID SHOULD BE 'JS-01'
    newID = sID + "-01";
    %>
    Because this an Access database I cannot use any null exception functions such as NVL or COALESCE which are specific to Oracle and SQL Server I beleive.

    The max() will return a result set, even if the max value is null.
    You should check to see if iID is null.
    if(rs.next())
       String iID = rs.getString("MaxID");
       if (iID == null)
           newID = sID + "-01";
       else
          String letters = iID.substring(0,3);
          ... etc ...

  • JTable and ResultSet TableModel with big resultset

    Hi, I have a question about JTable and a ResultSet TableModel.
    I have to develop a swing JTable application that gets the data from a ResultSetTableModel where the user can update the jtable data.
    The problem is the following:
    the JTable have to contain the whole data of the source database table. Currently I have defined a
    a TYPE_SCROLL_SENSITIVE & CONCUR_UPDATABLE statement.
    The problem is that when I execute the query the whole ResultSet is "downloaded" on the client side application (my jtable) and I could receive (with big resultsets) an "out of memory error"...
    I have investigate about the possibility of load (in the client side) only a small subset of the resultset but with no luck. In the maling lists I see that the only way to load the resultset incrementally is to define a forward only resultset with autocommit off, and using setFetchSize(...). But this solution doesn't solve my problem because if the user scrolls the entire table, the whole resultset will be downloaded...
    In my opinion, there is only one solution:
    - create a small JTable "cache structure" and update the structure with "remote calls" to the server ...
    in other words I have to define on the server side a "servlet environment" that queries the database, creates the resultset and gives to the jtable only the data subsets that it needs... (alternatively I could define an RMI client/server distribuited applications...)
    This is my solution, somebody can help me?
    Are there others solutions for my problem?
    Thanks in advance,
    Stefano

    The database table currently is about 80000 rows but the next year will be 200000 and so on ...
    I know that excel has this limit but my JTable have to display more data than a simple excel work sheet.
    I explain in more detail my solution:
    whith a distribuited TableModel the whole tablemodel data are on the server side and not on the client (jtable).
    The local JTable TableModel gets the values from a local (limited, 1000rows for example) structure, and when the user scroll up and down the jtable the TableModel updates this structure...
    For example: initially the local JTable structure contains the rows from 0 to 1000;
    the user scroll down, when the cell 800 (for example) have to be displayed the method:
    getValueAt(800,...)
    is called.
    This method will update the table structure. Now, for example, the table structure will contain data for example from row 500 to row 1500 (the data from 0 to 499 are deleted)
    In this way the local table model dimension will be indipendent from the real database table dimension ...
    I hope that my solution is more clear now...
    under these conditions the only solutions that can work have to implement a local tablemodel with limited dimension...
    Another solution without servlet and rmi that I have found is the following:
    update the local limited tablemodel structure quering the database server with select .... limit ... offset
    but, the select ... limit ... offset is very dangerous when the offset is high because the database server have to do a sequential scan of all previuous records ...
    with servlet (or RMI) solution instead, the entire resultset is on the server and I have only to request the data from the current resultset from row N to row N+1000 without no queries...
    Thanks

  • Why iam not able to call stored procedure and resultset in JSP

    hai guys,
    i screwed with this issue last 2 days
    here is the code
    Connection con=null;
    Callable proc = null;
    try
         proc = con.prepareCall("{ call List_Service_Numbers1(?) }");
         proc.setString(1,switchid);
         proc.registerOutParameter(1, oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleTypes.CURSOR );
         proc.execute();
         ResultSet rs = (ResultSet) getResults.getObject(1);
         System.out.println("*****########PROCEDURE EXECUTED SUCCESSFULLY");
    catch (SQLException e)
         e.printStackTrace();
         // We should protect these calls.
         proc.close();
         con.close();
    }thanks in advance
    Phani

    If that is truely the code, you are trying to prepare a call on a null connection.
    But, then again, its all a guess, since you have not provided the error or the stack trace. Provide those, and then we can help further.

  • ResultSet.next() and resultset.islast() problem

    I have query which returns 10 records. I run the using preparedStatement. When i use the while(resultSet.next()), the loop runs untill 10 records and after that when it come to the while check it hangs.
