Recover /var mount-point into new boot environment

I installed Solaris 10 u7 with zfs pool containing / mount-point (root)
One issue to mention is that - for no compulsory reason - I asked Solaris installer to place /var mount point into different file system (an option of the installer which I did not fully understood)
I used Live Upgrade to migrate Solaris 10 u7 to U8. First:
lucreate -c CBE - n NBE
I assume NBE boot environment was created in the zfs pool (rpool)
I did not take care of /var at this time.
I did luupgrade - to apply new Update 8 into NBE - the target boot environment.
Then did luactivate NBE and "init 6" to reboot.
At boot time Solaris does start NBE (Solaris 10 U8) - but cannot mount /var - hence forces console into
Maintenance Mode.
What is the strategy to use the /var file-system from CBE (old boot environment) ?
Can I mount file-system of old CBE /var ?
Or should I mount a spare file system as NBE /var and somehow copy it?
Please enlist a series of steps (commands), thanks.

I reinstalled Solaris 10 Update7 - this time with / (root) and /var on same dataset (file system).
This time lucreate and "luupgrade to Update 8" and luactivate ended OK
(no problems with mounting /var after "init 6" reboot)

    I am having troubles with deploying developed application into new environment. I exported application, schema and workspace and I want to import it all to a new machine. Except schema, I have imported and installed it all successfully. But after I import generated script (DDL) trough SQL Workshop->SQL Scripts I am not able to find created scheme.
    Let me explain my steps in sequence:
    1. I have installed XE 11g Release 2, and APEX 4.2 on the new machine (Win 7).
    2. New (ghost) workspace and schema were created (named as TESTWS, TESTSCH).
    3. After I logged to a new workspace (TESTWS) I completed importing old schema (DEVSCH) -( I have found that the import and install sequence should be - fist Schema, second Workspace (with mapped schema), and then Application)
    4. Finally I have imported old workspace (DEVWS) trough administrator console, and have tried to assign it to old (imported) schema (DEVSCH) but without any success. I was not able to locate imported schema.
    I am not sure if there is a missing step or something I have doing wrongly, so please advise what to do in order to import and recognize/locate/see imported scheme into new APEX environment?

    No.. Once you import an application into HIGHER version of APEX, it is modified to that version.. This is a suggestion, but I would advise having some sort of version control in this case, so you can go back to a prior version easily...

  • Live upgrade, zones and separate mount points

    Hi,
    We have a quite large zone environment based on Solaris zones located on VxVM/VxFS. I know this is a doubtful configuration but the choice was made before i got here and now we need to upgrade the environment. Veritas guides says its fine to locate zones on Veritas, but i am not sure Sun would approve.
    Anyway, sine all zones are located on a separate volume i want to create a new one for every zonepath, something like:
    lucreate -n upgrade -m /:/dev/dsk/c2t1d0s0:ufs -m /zones/zone01:/dev/vx/dsk/zone01/zone01_root02:ufs
    This works fine for a while after integration of 6620317 in 121430-23, but when the new environment is to be activated i get errors, see below[1]. If i look at the command executed by lucreate i see that the global root is mounted, but by zoneroot does not seem to have been mounted before the call to zoneadmd[2]. While this might not be a supported configuration, VxVM seems to be supported and i think that there are a few people out there with zonepaths on separate disks. Live upgrade probably has no issues with the files moved from the VxFS filesystem, that parts has been done, but the new filesystems does not seem to get mounted correctly.
    Anyone tried something similar or has any idea on how to solve this?
    The system is a s10s_u4 with kernel 127111-10 and Live upgrade patches 121430-25, 121428-10.

    I updated my manual pages got a reminder of the zonename field for the -m option of lucreate. But i still have no success, if i have the root filesystem for the zone in vfstab it tries to mount it the current root into the alternate BE:

    I'd like to upgrade a Sun Fire 280R system running Solaris 8 to Solaris 10 U4. I'd like to use Live Upgrade to do this. As that's going to be my first LU of a system, I've got some questions. Before I start, I'd like to mention that I have read the �Solaris 10 8/07 Installation Guide: Solaris Live Upgrade and Upgrade Planning� ([820-0178|http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-0178]) document. Nonetheless, I'd also appreciate pointers to a more �hands-on� documentation/howto reg. live upgrade.
    The system that I'd like to upgrade has these filesystems:

    It has 2 built in harddisks, which form those metadevices. You can find the �metastat� at http://askwar.pastebin.ca/697380. I'm now planning to break the mirrors for /, /usr, /var and /opt. To do so, I'd run
    metadetach d33 d23
    metaclear d23
    d23 is/used to be c1t1d0s4. I'd do this for d30, d32 and d34 as well. Plan is, that I'd be able to use these newly freed slices on c1t1d0 for LU. I know that I'm in trouble when c1t0d0 now dies. But that's okay, as that system isn't being used anyway right now...
    Or wait, I can use lucreate to do that as well, can't I? So, instead of manually detaching the mirror, I could do:
    lucreate -n s8_2_s10 -m /:/dev/md/dsk/d30:preserve,ufs \
    -m /usr:/dev/md/dsk/d32:preserve,ufs \

    I installed SXDE207 into a vmware VM on my laptop. I then upgraded it to 907 using live upgrade:

  • New zone and inherited file system mount point error

    Hi - would anyone be able to help with the following error please. I've tried to create a new zone that has the following inherited file system:
    inherit-pkg-dir:
    dir: /usr/local/var/lib/sudo
    But when I try to install it fails with:

    I've added this because unknown to me when I installed sudo from sunfreeware in the global it requires access to /usr/local/var/lib/sudo - sudo itself installs in /usr/local. And when I try to run any sudo commands in the new zone it gave this:

    sudo: Can't open /usr/local/var/lib/sudo/tdgrunj/8: Read-only file system

    Think I've just found the answer to my problem, I'd already inherited /usr ..... and as sudo from freeware installs in /usr/local I guess this is never going to work. I can only think to try the sudo version of the Solaris companion DVD or whatever it's called.

  • New-Partition assignes driver letter to mount point after reboot.

    Trying to create a series of mount points using powershell on Server 2012 R2. When I have used diskpart in the past I could initialize the disk, create a partition, format a volume and assign a mount point without assigning a driver letter to the drive.
    When I try to do the same thing in Powershell on Server 2012 R2, everything looks great until I reboot. Every partition I created and assigned as a mount mount gets a driver letter added to it... I am using mount points to avoid drive letters. Is there a way
    to prevent this behavior.  The following is an example:
    Get-Disk 3 | Initialize-Disk -PartitionStyle GPT
    Get-Disk 3 | new-Partition -UseMaximumSize -AssignDriveLetter:$False | Format-volume -confirm:$False
    Add-Partitionaccesspath -DiskNumber 3 -Partition 2 -AccessPath c:\someFolder
    Everything looks good at this point with no driver letter assigned. Rebooting adds a driver letter to the volume with no impact on the mount point... Is there a way to suppress the driver letter assignment?

    Figured it out... It appears that this part works fine:

  • Why does Arch suggest /boot for $esp mount point?

    Hi all,
    Something has been bugging me, and I can't figure out online why this is the case. Arch always suggests to mount the $esp on /boot, and by reading the Beginner's Guide/Installation wiki pages (and forums), it looks like the reasons are:
    - gummiboot upstream expects it there
    - pacman can only update kernels in /boot
    Other distributions suggest to mount the $esp on /boot/efi, and this has the good effect, that all files of distributions are located in subfolders ($esp/EFI/opensuse/, for example), and are not littering the root $esp folder. If every distribution did what Arch does, then on a multi-distro the root folder of the $esp would have every single kernel/fallback img.
    I noticed the FHS doesn't have a standard mount point/folder for the $esp, either.
    Is there another reason that Arch suggests this?

    Gummiboot's method only works if distros keep the /boot folder free of files, and use directories to cleanly categorise kernels, etc. I have yet to find a distribution that does this.
    "Works" is relative here. Gummiboot doesn't do things the way you want; that's fine, because a) you don't use it; and b) you can always organize your EFI images as you see fit. Gummiboot will still accomplish its intended task: booting a working Linux kernel from an EFI image. The Gummiboot Arch wiki page states that the ESP must be mounted at /boot for it to work, but that's it. The UEFI wiki page doesn't mention mounting at boot at all---only to /boot/efi. The EFISTUB page mentions that if you don't mount to /boot, you need to mount the ESP somewhere and manually copy the images to the ESP. The GRUB wiki page doesn't make statements on where the ESP should be mounted, but does make it clear that GRUB needs to be told where the ESP is mounted during installation. The Beginner's Guide does recommend mounting the ESP to /boot, and then links to another page with more information.
    Reading the Beginner's Guide without following the links may give the impression that mounting to /boot is something of a requirement, but it depends on the use case.You have four options when booting from UEFI: rEFInd, Gummiboot, GRUB and  EFISTUB. The first requires the ESP to be mount at /boot/efi, like it or not. The second requires it to be mounted at /boot, like it or not. The latter two have no strict requirements of where the ESP be mounted, but mounting anywhere other than /boot requires extra work on the part of the user. Yes, if you mount the ESP to /boot and run multiple distributions then the kernel images are still going to clutter the /boot directory, which is exactly what happens if you share a /boot partition between distributions no matter what (and as I alluded to earlier, there are cases in which this is necessary). UEFI has nothing to do with that, and it's one reason that each distribution has its own naming conventions for its kernel image (a Linux kernel built from source will always be called "bzImage" regardless of the distribution its built on). Arguably, none of that matters unless you're manually moving and deleting kernel images and get confused about which one is which---a case that almost never arises nowadays, and should never arise for the typical desktop user.

  • How do I create new mount point

    Hello,
    I'd like to create a new mount point. The Admin guide says to click the Create button on the toolbar but I don't see anything that says Create (I have New, Edit, Upload,...).
    Searching here I've seen references to some code snippets that purport to do it but I'd rather use a GUI.

    You have to use iFS Manager, not the WebUI.

  • New hard disk has blank Mount Point

    I recently installed a new disk which I am now using as my main HD.
    From within System Profiler and also Disk Utility I have noticed that the mount point is blank, whereas the old HD disk had a mount point of '/Volumes/Macintosh HD'.
    Is this OK? All seems to be OK with the new disk but I would like to confirm if I have to do anything else with the new disk.

    The standard mount point for a startup volume is '/'. This isn't blank but the Unix terminology for a startup volume if you are running Disk Utility from the startup volume.

  • V2P Virtual Machine to physical Server migration on IBM x3650 M4 and switch from BIOS to UEFI Boot environment

    Hi there,
    just wanted to share my experience with a manual P2V Migration. The VM became to ressource hungry and it was decided to move it off an ESX 5 Cluster to a dedicated physical Machine.
    V2P Virtual Machine to physical Server IBM x3650 M4 and switch from BIOS to UEFI Boot environment
    Task:
    V2P Migrate a VMware virtual machine to a IBM x3650 M4 with a ServeRAID 5110e RAID Controller or any other LSI RAID Controller without 3rd Party tools.
    This should also work with other RAID Controllers or Servers but be sure to pick the right drivers then.
    Extra Task:
    The VM's boot environment/virtual BIOS is BIOS, not UEFI (as per default VMware Setting). The physical Server is running in UEFI mode.
    The Challenge:
    After restore the Server won't boot or get into a BSOD (7B), because the RAID drivers are missing.
    After restore the VM won't boot because the boot environment has changed from BIOS to UEFI
    Preparations:
    An existing physical Server of the same type and with the same RAID controller and same OS would be nice for troubleshooting and checking the registry.
    An existing DHCP server will make networking things easier.
    Connect the new physical server x3650 M4 to power and network
        create a virtual drive that has at least the size of the existing VM plus the size of the full backup (.vhd). Should be about twice the size of the original vmdk.
    Get a USB Flash stick (I used a 8GB modell so no problem with larger sticks)
    Download and extract LSI MegaRAID Driver on that USB media (I used 6.705.05.00-MR_Windows_Driver directly from LSI website)
    Download and extract INTEL Network Adapter Driver on that USB media (I used 12.11.97.0 of e1r62x64.inf from 19.5 driver release from 2014.09.26 directly from LSI website)
    Step by Step:
    if you have an other physical Server of the same type and same Controller and same OS:
    1.    open regedit and export everything related to SCSIAdapter and megasas2 to .reg files or skip this step and use my files below
        some of this (sub)keys may not be accesible - you will then first take ownership and/or modify permissions to read them

        HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\CriticalDeviceDatabase (only relevant are those devices where the service name is megasas2 - export the whole subkey and get the filtering done with tools like notepad++)
        Make a copy of the following files/folders:
        c:\programdata\LSI\
        c:\windows\inf\megasas2.INF
        c:\windows\inf\megasas2.PNF
        c:\windows\system32\drivers\megasas2.SYS
    on the existing VM:
    1.    create a full backup (image) with the built-in Windows Backup Utility and save it in an accessible network location (you will need this one, if anything goes wrong or you want to come back to this point.
        Alternatively you could create a VMware snapshot.
    2.    import the .reg files you created earlier or import my files below.
        Attention: This will make the VM unbootable!
        But it is required to prepare the VM for the new RAID controller when it will be restored on the physical server.
        Do NOT reboot now as this will make the VM unbootable!
    4.    Copy the LSI folder and the megasas2.INF/PNF/SYS files to the appropriate destination folders on the VM.
    3.    again create a full backup (image) with the built-in Windows Backup Utility and save it in an other accessible network location but not where you safed the first backup.
        This will be the "golden" backup if you want, where the RAID controller is prepares. We will rebuild the new machine with this second backup.
    4.    Optional: you could use the Backuputility now to restore the Systemstate of the first backup and reboot or restore the VMware snapshot.
        This will undo the changes we made to the VM.
    on the new physical server:
    1.    boot the physical server from Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 DVD
    2.    when it is ready to install, press shift+F10 to get command prompt and do not click to install Server 2008
    3.    check driveletter of the USB stick with diskpart list vol (was C: at my Server, so don't wonder about that letter)
    3.    load drivers for ServeRAID SAS controller (this is mandatory to see the volume in diskpart)
        drvload c:\srv_2008_x64\megasas2.inf
    4.    load drivers for INTEL I350 Gigabit NIC's (you will need this to access the backup that is on the network)
        drvload c:\PRO1000\NDIS62\e1r62x64.inf
    5.    wpeinit (will start network. wait ~15 sec to let it start and get IP address)
        check if you have IP connectivity an address with ipconfig, if not, use an other NIC driver and repeat steps 4+5
    6.    create the EFI and BCD
        diskpart
        list disk
        select disk x (where x is the number of the disk to convert)
        clean
        convert gpt
        create partition EFI size=128
        format fs=fat32 quick label=EFI
        assign letter=i or any other free drive letter
        create partition MSR size=128
    6.1    Copy EFI bootloader to EFI partition
        i: (where i is the letter of your EFI partition)
        mkdir EFI\Boot
        mkdir EFI\Microsoft\Boot
        copy x:\Windows\Boot\EFI\bootmgfw.efi i:\EFI\Microsoft\Boot (where x ist the default letter of the current Windows PE environment)
        copy x:\Windows\Boot\EFI\bootmgfw.efi i:\EFI\Boot\bootx64.efi (note that the file will be renamed to bootx64.efi)
    7.    create the new partitions
        diskpart
        create partition primary size=100000 (edit the size to your needs. this will later become the system drive of your server)
        format fs=ntfs quick label=Windows
        assign letter=Y or any other free drive letter
        create partition primary size=990000 (this will temporarily store your backup and we need it for the restore process)
        format fs=ntfs quick label=Backup
        assign letter=B or any other free drive letter
        exit
    8.    map network drive and copy the backup .vhd  to the local disk
        net use L: \\networklocation\where\you\saved\the\backup (enter the credentials when asked)
            copy the .vhd file that contains the OS of your VM to the local Backup Partition B. The relevant vhd file is usually the largest file in that fileset.
            Note that the names are very similarly - be sure to get the correct file!
        copy "L:\WindowsImageBackup\VMNAME\Backup 2015-02-03 123456\00e767c6-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx.vhd" B:\
            give it time, this is slow and will take some minutes/hours and you will not see any progress! Look at the disk-LED's to see if anything is still happening
    9.    mount the .vhd and copy it's contents to the new system partition
            Note that you can only mount a locally stored .vhd. You cannot mount a .vhd in a network location.
        diskpart
        select vdisk file=B:\00e767c6-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx.vhd
        attach vdisk
        select vol 5 (where 5 is the number of the mounted vdisk)
        assign letter=Z or any other free drive letter
        exit
    10. Restore the files from the image
        z: (where z is the letter of your mounted .vhd)
        xcopy * Y:\ /e /c /h /k /o /b /q /y (where Y: is the letter of your new partition with the label "Windows")
            several "Access denied" messages appear, ignore them. Those are SystemVolumeInformation folders.
    11.    Create Boot Configuration Data (BCD)
        bootrec /RebuildBcd
            this will try to repair the missing BCD on the second of the two small partitions we created earlier in and should normally work, otherwise you'll have to create BCD manually (search google for that procedure)
            Note that it may find more than one Windows installation and ask which sould be added to the boot list. Be sure to select only the one that is in the correct Volume (Y:\)
        that's it - exit the DOS command box and close the "Install Windows" Window, after a prompt it will reboot.
        Select "Start Windows Normally", if Windows Error Recovery appears.    
    12. Preparing Windows
        When Windows boots for the first time, DO NOT reboot if you are asked, it won't come back at this stage!
        Install Intel chipset drivers for the Server (I used "intc_dd_inteldp_9.4.0.1026_windows_32-64.exe" from IBM website)
        Open Device Manager, uninstall the "RAID-Controller" with the exclamation mark. You cannot install the correct driver for this Device at this point, it will bring you the error: "Cannot create a stable subkey under a volatile
    parent key"
        Once again, DO NOT reboot!
        In Device Manager select Action>Add Legacy Hardware
        click Next
        select Hardware manually
        select Storage Controller as Type
        LSI should be listed, select "LSI MegaRAID SAS 9281-8E"
        click Next, ignore the error "Code 10" Message.
        Click Done.
        Rightclick the LSI MegaRAID SAS 9281-8E device with the exclamation mark in Device Manager
        select Update driver
        select Browse my computer for driver software
        select let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer
        select "Have Disk"
        browse to the folder where the extracted RAID driver 6.705.05.00-MR_Windows_Driver is located (e.g. USB Flash stick E:\6.705.05.00-MR_Windows_Driver\srv_2008_x64)
        then unselect "Show Compatible Hardware"
        on the right side, scroll up and select "IBM ServeRAID M5110e SAS/SSATA Controller"
        ignore the Update Driver Warning and click Yes
        click Next, ignore the error "Code 10" Message.
        ignore the exclamation mark on "IBM ServeRAID M5110e SAS/SSATA Controller" in Device Manager but be sure that there is only this controller and no other RAID-Controller or LSI SAS Controller listed under "Other Devices"
    or "Storage Controllers"
        NOW you are safe to reboot
        After reboot you will find two "IBM ServeRAID M5110e SAS/SSATA Controller" in Device Manager
        Rightclick and uninstall the one with the exclamation mark. Do not tick the checkbox to remove the driver as well!
    You're done!! (hopefully)

  • Need Best Practice for creating BE in ZFS boot environment with zones

    Good Afternoon -
    I have a Sparc system with ZFS Root File System and Zones. I need to create a BE for whenever we do patching or upgrades to the O/S. I have run into issues when testing booting off of the newBE where the zones did not show up. I tried to go back to the original BE by running the luactivate on it and received errors. I did a fresh install of the O/S from cdrom on a ZFS filesystem. Next ran the following commands to create the zones, and then create the BE, then activate it and boot off of it. Please tell me if there are any steps left out or if the sequence was incorrect.
    # zfs create –o canmount=noauto rpool/ROOT/S10be/zones
    # zfs mount rpool/ROOT/S10be/zones
    # zfs create –o canmount=noauto rpool/ROOT/s10be/zones/z1
    # zfs create –o canmount=noauto rpool/ROOT/s10be/zones/z2
    # zfs mount rpool/ROOT/s10be/zones/z1
    # zfs mount rpool/ROOT/s10be/zones/z2
    # chmod 700 /zones/z1
    # chmod 700 /zones/z2
    # zonecfg –z z1
    Myzone: No such zone configured
    Use ‘create’ to begin configuring a new zone
    Zonecfg:myzone> create
    Zonecfg:myzone> set zonepath=/zones/z1
    Zonecfg:myzone> verify
    Zonecfg:myzone> commit
    Zonecfg:myzone>exit
    # zonecfg –z z2
    Myzone: No such zone configured
    Use ‘create’ to begin configuring a new zone

    Output from zoneadm list -v:

    Now for the BE create:
    # lucreate –n newBE
    # zfs list

    # zfs inherit -r mountpoint rpool/ROOT/newBE
    # zfs set mountpoint=/ rpool/ROOT/newBE
    # zfs inherit -r mountpoint rpool/ROOT/newBE/var
    # zfs set mountpoint=/var rpool/ROOT/newBE/var
    # zfs inherit -r mountpoint rpool/ROOT/newBE/zones
    # zfs set mountpoint=/zones rpool/ROOT/newBE/zones
    and did it for the zones too.
    When ran the luactivate newBE - it came up with errors, so again changed the mountpoints. Then rebooted.
    Once it came up ran the luactivate newBE again and it completed successfully. Ran the lustatus and got:
    # lustatus
    Boot Environment Is Active Active Can Copy
    Name Complete Now On Reboot Delete Status
    s10s_u8wos_08a yes yes no no -
    newBE yes no yes no -
    Ran init 0
    ok boot -L
    picked item two which was newBE
    then boot.
    Came up - but df showed no zones, zfs list showed no zones and when cd into /zones nothing there.

    The issue here is that lucreate add's an entry to the vfstab in newBE for the zfs filesystems of the zones. You need to lumount newBE /mnt then edit /mnt/etc/vfstab and remove the entries for any zfs filesystems. Then if you luumount it you can continue. It's my understanding that this has been reported to Sun, and, the fix is in the next release of Solaris.

  • Can't delete boot environment --arrghh!

    Here's what I'm running:

    This install is the default install of Solaris 10 from Sun. I needed diff. partitions so created a flar, then 'reinstalled' using the flar and created desired partition sizes. I don't remember creating any boot environments before doing this but I show to have two:
    # lustatus
    Boot Environment Is Active Active Can Copy
    Name Complete Now On Reboot Delete Status
    be0 yes yes yes no -
    be3 yes no no yes -
    I want to delete be3 but cannot. I got this error first:
    # ludelete -f be3
    WARNING: Boot environment <be3> has one or more file systems mounted at </var>.
    ERROR: The mount point </var> is not a valid ABE mount point (no /etc directory found).
    ERROR: The mount point </var> provided by the <-m> option is not a valid ABE mount point.
    Usage: lurootspec [-l error_log] [-o outfile] [-m mntpt]
    ERROR: Cannot determine root specification for BE <be3>.
    Unable to delete boot environment.
    However, /var/ is listed in /etc/vstab as mounting to:
    /dev/dsk/c1t0d0s3 ufs 12587630592 /var
    So I tried to unmount be3:
    # luumount -f be3
    ERROR: umount: /var/run busy
    ERROR: cannot unmount </var/run>
    ERROR: failed to unmount </var/run>
    ERROR: cannot fully unmount boot environment - <1>: file systems remain mounted
    Then I tried to delete again and got slightly different error:
    ludelete be3
    ERROR: The mount point </.alt.tmp.b-Js.mnt> is not a valid ABE mount point (no /etc directory found).
    ERROR: The mount point </.alt.tmp.b-Js.mnt> provided by the <-m> option is not a valid ABE mount point.
    Usage: lurootspec [-l error_log] [-o outfile] [-m mntpt]

    Any idea on what I'm doing wrong? I'm still new when it comes to boot env's. Any help would be great.
    Note: I tried leaving be3 alone and create a new env but it seems to want to use be3 for source, even when I use the -s parameter.
