Recovery HD partition disappears when I install Mavericks. File Vault 2 can't be turned on.

Hi folks,
I've run into this issue and repeated internet searches don't turn up anyone else having the same problem.
Until a couple of days ago, I've had the most recent version of Mountain Lion installed with File Vault 2 turned on. Everything has been fine.
I did a clean install of Mavericks, and everything went fine with the install. During the post-install set up, I get a window saying that I used to have FV2 turned on, and that to do so again requires me turning it on in System Preferences. So I try to do that, but then I get a message saying that "some disk formats do not support the recovery partion that needs to be created...".
So I look (using both diskutil list and enabling the debug menu in Disk Utility) and see that the Recovery HD is gone. I don't know how to recreate it and don't understand the command line partitioning well enough to try it, so I try again with Mavericks, doing it the long way:
I do a clean install of Lion.
Boot up into Lion, and verify that the Recovery HD partition was created. It was.
Boot up from the Mavericks bootable USB I made, erase just the main partition I intend to install Mavericks on (again, I see Recovery HD exists).
Install Mavericks.
Boot up from the internal HD Mavericks, get the same note about turning on FV2 manually, and try to do so.
It fails again. I use diskutil and Disk Utility with the debug menu, and sure enough Recovery HD is gone and I cannot turn on FV2.
Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? I feel like this would be a more widely discussed issue if this were a pure Mavericks issue. But Apple is not giving us a lot of support for doing clean installs (all instructions I find are on tech nerd blogs), so I'm lost about where to begin.
Thanks for your help.
It is Thu Oct 24 08:32:28 MDT 2013.
< Thu 8:32am ~ > diskutil list
/dev/disk0
   #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
   0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *500.1 GB   disk0
   1:                        EFI EFI                     209.7 MB   disk0s1
   2:                  Apple_HFS Tesla                   499.2 GB   disk0s2

FWIW, I did a clean install of Mavericks with a bootable USB drive, which I created following the instructions in this link:
http://www.gottabemobile.com/2013/10/22/perform-clean-install-os-x-mavericks/
The short method did not work. I succeeded with the longer method.
Mavericks installed without a hitch, after which I spent hours customizing settings, clean installing applications and restoring data from my prior Mountain Lion backup. No problems at all, just very time consuming.
However, I could not activate "Find my Mac" because the installer had not created a a Recovery HD. I trawled the forums and was discouraged by the apparent complexity of creating one.
This is what I did, which worked perfectly and required very little attention. It is almost automatic, fail proof and done in under an hour (with a fast internet connection to download Mavericks at just over 5GB).
1.- Back up the system. Better still, clone your system to an external HD using Carbon Copy Cloner.
2.- Download Mavericks from the App Store.
3.- It will warn you that you already have 10.9 installed. Download anyway.
4.- When it finishes downloading you'll get a window prompting you to install. Confirm.
5.- Enter your user password when prompted.
6.- Go for a walk. In about 45 min your system will have restarted Mavericks and all your settings, applications and data will be there.
7.- Check that you now have a Recovery HD by restarting the system, holding the Option key down when you hear the startup gong. You'll (hopefully) see the system HD and the Recovery HD (10.9).
Hope this will help someone.

  • Why did my I photo disappear when I installed maverick

After installing mav my Mac book would not support iPhoto

    What do you mean disappear?
It obviously wouldnt be on your new laptop without you transfering it. (simply loging in to your itunes account wont import your library).
Have you transfered it from the old Dell to the MacBook Pro via migration assistant, or by manually copying your music folder and then had a problem? You need to be more sepecific in what the problem is in order for us to help.

my ebay toolbar and the ebay logo that was in my system tray at the bottom have both disappeared when I installed FireFox??? How do I get them back? Please help.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • I've just installed Mavericks and now I can't log in to my Mac because it's refusing to recognise my password

My computer is not recognising my password and I can't log in since just installing Mavericks...how can I get into my computer?

Startup your Mac in Safe Mode
A Safe Mode boot takes much longer than a normal boot so be patient.
Then follow the instructions here > OS X: Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password
When you are done, click Restart from the Apple () menu.

You may have blundered into "Full Screen" mode, an abomination ported from iOS, the iPhone Operating System, land of tiny screens and one-at-a-time Applications.
Try clicking the double-arrows in the extreme upper right of the MenuBar or Window.

Created PDF form in Acrobat XI Pro, but HELP fields disappear when I save FCDT file to PDF. Please help. Thanks!

I am not aware of a field type "Help" within a PDF form. I do not see it as a form field that can be added in the form edit mode.
Forms Central forms do not support all the features of Acrobat forms.
Are you talking about the "Tool Tips" or a hidden field that only shows when one enters a field and is hidden upon exiting the field.

  • I installed Mavericks and now I can't print to my brother HL-2040 through the network

  • I have no recovery HD, tried installing Mavericks and now i can't acces lion either so I'm stuck with no OS.

Hello, im really mad and desperate.
Was in lion and needed xcode 5 so I downloaded mavericks installer
Double clicked mavericks and began installation
I wanted to install over lion with no backups, had no important files already left.
    Installation failed for some reason.
Now everytime i boot my mac, the os x maverick installer shows up, but i cant select lion (i have 3 disks available for install none of which are candidates, since one is bootcamp , im here now, and the others are disk04 and disk06 iirc)
I don't have recovery HD, when holding down option in boot I ONLY SEE MAVERICK OS X INSTALLER AND BOOTCAMP OPTIONS , i have tried cmd R, holding alt, etc and I CAN'T IN ANY WAY ERASE, RESTORE OR WHATEVER lion hd.
I was able however to boot lion in safe boot mode, but that's no use since its really slow and buggy. I need answers, I don't want to buy another HD for something that Apple advertises as "Just download and install" which completley ruined my mac.

In that case you can do Internet Recovery:
Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
    1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This will install Lion since that was the version pre-installed on your computer. From there you can upgrade to Mavericks.

  • Installing Mavericks to external HDD, can I have more than one Partition?

    Hi,
I am about to install Mavericks on an external SSD drive, which I shall be using instead of the internal HDD. My question is do I have to format the SSD with one partition, or can I use 2 or 3 ?
    Thanks

Just to update I bought the WD My Book Studio 2tb as I like WD drives and it comes in a matching aluminum case.
I am using it as my boot drive and also my main storage. I put a copy on it of all the apps and software I had on the internal drive.
Boot up time with internal HDD @ 32 seconds
Boot up time WD external HDD @ 43 seconds (USB 3.0)
Not too shabby! Look forward to getting an external SSD drive connected via thunderbolt (might then match my new p.c. with a boot up time of 9 seconds)

  • Iphoto disappeared after I installed Mavericks

I just installed Mavericks and my iphoto disapeared. Help!

This happened to me too (why doesn't Apple warn us before we upgrade, something always goes wrong), and I can't update iphoto - I get a message that says it was purchased by another user? It wasn't; this is my computer and iphoto has traveled with me all along.
Anyway, I tried to just buy a new copy of the software (REALLY???) but it won't let me buy it, do I need to uninstall iphoto first?

  • I lost flip4mac when I installed mavericks. What is the best way to view windows media?

I can't view windows media since I installed mavericks. I found out that flip4mac didn't install with mavericks. Is there an apple app to replace flip4mac or should I just get another flip4mac. The icon is still there but none of the software seems to be present.

Try VLC media player it seems to play almost any codec.

  • DIV tags disappear when put over swf file background

I am working on a site which has a swf movie as a background
which fills the browser window(SWFobject). When I place DIV tags,
which reference a CSS id and contain swf files as well, over the
top (for absolute positioning, etc.) they disappear when previewed
in a browser . Is there a reason that the swfobject always takes on
top position in the browser? Do I need to change something in the
SWFoject javascript file, in the code or within either the CSS file
or the dreamweaver HTML code? Here is a link to a site that is very
similar to what I am working on.

Any help would be most appreciated.

All Active content on a page will always rise to the top, so
    to speak,
including Flash, certain form elements, Java applets, and
    Active X controls.
This means that each of these will poke through layers. There
    is not a good
cross-browser/platform reliable way to solve this issue, but
    if you can be
confident in your visitors using IE 5+ or NN6+, then you can
    use the Flash
wmode parameter (however, Safari does not support this
    properly!).

  • Just installed Mavericks for mac and can't print accurately.

I just installed Mavericks 10.9 on my iMac and now the printer colors are totally wrong as in not in the image!!  I did contact Epson ( I have an Epson WF 3540) and we updated the driver.  They said the problem is with the applications,  ie. Photoshop and/or iPhoto.  I did run the necessary utilities re ink and print head cleaning.  Any suggestions?

Yes, I seem to have solved my initial problem but found another, I
can't to set the paper size. I often use the Custom Paper Size
dialogue. I'll keep updating my drivers and hope for the best. Epson
must be getting bombarded with complaints. Thank you for your help.

  • Photoshop enlarges all open files when I magnify a file. How can i get it to only magnify one file

When I use the magnifying glass to enlarge my file in photoshop cs3, all of my open files magnify at the same time. I only want one of them to enlarge. This started happening when I bought a new Macbook pro and installed OSX10.6.5. Does anyone know how I can fix it so only the file I am working on enlarges? sometimes I want to compare a smaller file to a larger file and I can no longer do that in Photoshop.

    Hello Gtarka,
There is an option on the Zoom tool to "Zoom All Windows". This is just a check mark in the tool options bar, next to the "Resize Windows To Fit" option, directly under the Menu bar. Simply deselect this option.
Please, in the future, post such questions here:
