Recovery window for tape backups

Hope someone can answer to my questions.
With RMAN you can maintain the number of tape backups that are needed for recovery purpose through the “delete obsolete recovery window” command. E.g. the command below ensures tape backups be kept for recovery within 31 days:
delete noprompt obsolete recovery window of 31 days device type 'SBT_TAPE';
Q:
1)     If I use a disk area as pseudo tape area in my backups (through ORACLE.DISKSBT library parameter), I guess the above "delete noprompt obsolete recovery window" command would work on the pseudo tape area as well?
2)     At my site the pseudo tape area is backed up to tape nightly through the system backup job, and the tape backups are kept for about 1 month by the tape system. To save space in the pseudo tape area on disk can I just set a small recovery window in the above DELETE command (say 1 day) , and relies on the actual tape system retention policy for oracle backups? How would this affect oracle’s ability to do recovery?
Thanks

1) I would never use a 'faked' tape as a permanent solution - only to test tape backup scripts - , as it slows down the backup/recovery process. From RMAN's point of view a pseudo tape works like a real tape, so all valid commands apply.
2) When you delete a backup, RMAN forgets it. RMAN is not aware of still available backups in the tape system, you have to recatalog the backups. That means overhead in manual maintenance and a source for possible errors.

  • What's the difference between redundancy and recovery window for retention?

    Hello all,
    I'm still trying to get a grip on this concept for RMAN backup planning.
    I recently ran into a situation as follows.
    I have the backups set to a redundancy of 1.
    I have instance1, which had GRID jobs to run RMAN backups as follows
    Incremental database level=0 weekly at Wed at 2:30am
    I have daily backups, incremental level=1 each evening
    I have archive log backups through the day.
    What happened, was that apparently on a Tues some time, the development team deleted data from almost every table in their schema.
    The didn't discover this till midday or so on Wednesday.
    I went to try to restore...and RMAN couldn't do it. I had found a SCN for early the Tues they did it...but I got the following error:
    RMAN> RUN
    2> {
    3> SET UNTIL SCN 4590383198282;
    4> RESTORE DATABASE;
    5> RECOVER DATABASE;

    ORA-01110: data file 1: '+DATADG/instance1/datafile/system.284.697137287'
    From what research I did...it appears that since I did not have a level=0 incremental from before, it could not reset the database back in time. The previous one had been deleted since, I guess I had a redundancy of 1.
    So, I thought I had a week backup they way I have it set..but that assumes that errors are found pretty quickly before the next level=0 backup.
    I want at least 1 to 1.5 weeks worth of backups. I do have the problem that we do not have many tapes in rotation, so I cannot go for too long...may 2x weeks tops.
    I'm trying to rethink my strategy, but I'm confused as I read as to the difference between setting RMAN retention with redundancy vs recovery window.
    Can someone give me an explanation how you understand it? I'm reading on the web and in oracle books, and for some reason, it just isn't clear to me what is the best way to go....especially when I see that redundancy and recovery window might both be set??
    Thank you in advance,
    cayenne

    Dear Cayenne
    AFAIK RMAN doesn't claim that "you haven't enough backup". Please read the error you got carefully
    ORA-01180: can not create datafile 1
    ORA-01110: data file 1: '+DATADG/instance1/datafile/system.284.697137287'
    and check the following link:
    ORA-01180: Cannot create datafile 1 when doing RMAN restore onto 2nd server
    Moreover, could you please use LIST BACKUP command and see whether you have enough backups?
    Read "Redundancy Based Backup Retention Policy" from the following link:

  • Software for Tape Backups?

    Hi
    I am using Oracle 10g and want to backup my data on Tape. is there any need for a third party software for this purpose. and if answer is yes, then which software?
    thanks

    hi,
    you could try OSB, Oracle secure Backup. Have a search on metalink/OTN for information.
    There are many other vendors who provide tape management software Veritas, IBM etc etc but you will probably need a goodly supply of money for these.
    regards

  • Tape Backups

    Hello,
    Does anyone know what the two para are that I need in OEM 10g using Net Veritas for tape backups.
    I want to use OEM to schudule my backups to tapes using MML. What should these two settings be set at ?
    Tape Settings - Tape Drives =
    and
    Media Management Settings - Media Management Vendor Library Parameters =
    Thanks..

    After you get this error in DMP do you go to device manager and do a hardware refresh?  If yes, does Windows rediscover the device?  Also, have you checked the library front panel for issues?  Another thing that I have seen with other backup
    vendors is that you can try to play with enabling/disabling the medium changer (if it is enabled disable it, if disabled try enabling it).  The other thing you may want to do is update the drivers on the server the drives are attached to.

  • HP Backup and Recovery Manager for Windows 7

    I installed all the softwares and drivers that came along with the HP upgrade DVD. But, I find that the Backup and Recovery Manager missing on the DVD. Is there a Backup and Recovery Manager for Win 7? I liked the backup and recovery manager that was available on my Vista when I bought this laptop but is now unavailable because of the upgrade!! Any solutions for this? I do not want to use the default Windows Backup as I do not have a separate HDD at the moment to store the backup there and do not wish to populate my local hard disk with backup data!! Thanks.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Yea, basically. There's no working program for your laptop so it seems that you can use from within Windows 7.
    However, if you have problems, recovery discs will work. As well, if your recovery partition still exists, you can still access it by pressing F11 when you see the HP logo at startup.

  • Understanding report need backup recovery window ..

    Hello,
    I have a big database which backed up within several days at night time. The retention policy is "recovery window of 3 days". I've tried to analyze the results of
    report need backup; But I noticed than this command return just the list of datafiles having latest backup older than 3 days. I've tried to read again the docs:
    >
    Reports data files for which there are not sufficient backups to satisfy a recovery window-based retention policy for the specified number of days, that is, data files without sufficient backups for point-in-time recovery to any point back to the time SYSDATE - integer.
    >
    Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I consider that the ability to make recover to any point in time within 3 days require the backup taken earlier than 3 days ago and archivelogs from the time when backup was taken to the recover PIT. Im I right? If so then how I should interprete the results of report need backup ? I can't find the detailed explanations of this in the docs :(
    Thanks in advance,
    Constantine

    You are correct in your appreciations.
    This report is about the need of backups, without considering archivelog backups.
    It does not mean that listed files are in an unrecoverable situation.

  • RMAN Recovery Window 7 days setting - shows no obsolete backups

    Hi All. Quick question about RMAN retention policy....
    I have the current backup strategy:
    Full backup (0) -> Sunday
    Incremental backup (1) -> Monday - Saturday
    Archive log backups -> every hour
    This is a new database I just started taking backups on last month. (1st full backup was run October 4th)
    I currently have not deleted any of them.
    The old RMAN RETENTION POLICY was set to REDUNDANCY = 1
    REPORT OBSOLETE lists all of them up to the last full which ran this past Sunday (Nov 1st)
    I just switched the RMAN RETENTION POLICY to RECOVERY WINDOW of 7 DAYS
    REPORT OBSOLETE lists no backups obsolete...
    Shouldn't I see all the backups prior to a week ago or does it only take affect for backups run under the new policy?
    Any help/replies are apprecitaed.
    Thanks

    Ran crosscheck with no problems:
    Crosschecked 200 objects
    But still same results for:
    RMAN> report obsolete;
    RMAN retention policy will be applied to the command
    RMAN retention policy is set to recovery window of 7 days
    no obsolete backups found
    Am I missing something here? Or like I mentioned is this expected behaviour because all of my other backups were run with REDUNDANCY = 1 retention policy?
    Thanks

  • Recovery window retention policy deletes archive logs before a backup?

    Hi All,
    Oracle 11G on Windows 2008 R2
    This afternoon, I changed my RMAN retention policy from 'RETENTION POLICY REDUNDANCY 3' to RETENTION POLICY RECOVERY WINDOW OF 3 DAYS'
    However, i checked tonight and after my daily backup ran, all the archive logs prior to the backup had been deleted! Thus meaning i dont think i can restore to any point in time, prior to my daily backup. All the .arc logs were there after the backup. So i tried another test and kicked off the daily backup again. During the backup process, the archive logs got deleted again! Now i don't have any archive logs..
    Is this proper behaviour of RETENTION POLICY RECOVERY WINDOW?? I thought it would keep all the files needed for me to restore to any point in time for the previous 3 days. When i used REDUNDANCY, with my daily backups, it kept 3 days worth of backups+ archive logs so i could restore point-in-time to any point. How can i use RECOVERY WINDOW so that i can actually restore to any point-in-time for the 3 days??
    I wanted to change to RECOVERY WINDOW since i read that by using REDUNDANCY it only keeps X copies of a backup (so if i ran the backup 3 times in a day, i would only have those 3).
    Thanks in advance.

  • Backup with retention policy to recovery window of N days

    Hello,
    I've issued command to create database incremental backup with configuration:
    run
      configure retention policy to recovery window of 14 days;
      backup incremental level 1 cumulative
        tag daily_incr_14_days
        database
      plus archivelog delete all input;
    All parameters are set to their default values and database backups goes to FRA. I've got recovery catalog connected and all RC_ views at my disposal.
    1) Is there any way to find out, what recovery window was used for backup from any command in rman or query from RC_ views or local database views (information from control file)?
    2) If I use other recovery window setting with configure command what would rman crosscheck or report commands do?

    Mahir,
    thanks for answer - this means that recovery window should be used mainly for maintenance purposes (crosscheck, delete obsolete, report need backup etc.) and it's not related to actual retention period with backup pieces like 'keep until' clause for backup ... database command (this information are saved with backup as I could check in rc_backup_set view from recovery catalog)?
    Yes it is.
    Maintaining RMAN Backups and Repository Records
    keepOption
    backup retention policy
    A user-defined policy for determining how long backups and archived logs must be retained for media recovery. You can define a retention policy in terms of backup redundancy or a recovery window.
    RMAN retains the data file backups required to satisfy the current retention policy, and any archived redo logs required for complete recovery of those data file backups.
    recovery window
    A recovery window is one type of RMAN backup retention policy, in which the DBA specifies a period of time and RMAN ensures retention of backups and archived redo logs required for point-in-time recovery to any time during the recovery window.
    The interval always ends with the current time and extends back in time for the number of days specified by the user. For example, if the retention policy is set for a recovery window of seven days, and the current time is 11:00 AM on Tuesday,
    RMAN retains the backups required to allow point-in-time recovery back to 11:00 AM on the previous Tuesday.

  • How to create recovery disk for windows 8.1 after update from windows 8.

    My laptop came with windows 8 and i have recovery discs for windows 8.
    Now i've updated to windows 8.1, so i want to creat recovery discs for windows 8.1.
     So in future when i use recovery discs i dont have to download windows 8.1 again.
    Please tell me if there is any way to do this.....

    As colakid posted, in Windows 8 the ability to create a recovery CD/DVD has gone. Your options are to:
    create a recovery USB; or
    create a recovery image.
    Recovery USB
    Colakid's post talks you through how to make a recovery USB: from control panel, choose Recovery, then Create a Recovery Drive, and follow the prompts.
    However, the 'recovery USB' can be a bit misleading. When the wizard starts, there is an option to 'copy the recovery partition from the PC to the recovery drive'. If you do not check this option, you will still need installation media to reset your PC.
    Since you have upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1, you will probably not be able to check this option, as it will be greyed out (like it is in the picture in Colakid's post).
    If you go ahead and create the USB anyway, you will be able to boot to it, but you won't be able to reinstall Windows unless you have the installation media (or possibly a system image, though I haven't tried that).
    Recovery image
    The recovery image is an image of your computer that Windows will use when you select the 'refresh my pc' option. You can create a recovery image using the recimg.exe tool.
    First, open an elevated command prompt (type cmd and press Ctrl + Shift + Enter).
    Next, create the recovery image by typing:
    recimg /createimage [path]
    Where [path] is the folder you want the image in, eg C:\Recovery. You cannot set the file name - it will always be called CustomRefresh.wim.
    Let it run its course. When it's done, you can check that it is the current recovery image by typing
    recimg /showcurrent
    It's important to keep in mind what a recovery image contains. It will have your Windows system files (in their current state), and the desktop apps you have installed (so it makes sense to do this after a fresh install of Windows). It will
    not backup any Metro apps or user files, because these are not deleted during a system refresh. If you want a complete backup of everything on your computer the way it is now, you should make take a complete system image (which
    can be done from the File History settings in control panel - at the bottom left there will be a 'System Backup Image' option - or you can do it using any other backup software like Ghost or Acronis).
    In my case, I created the recover image straight after upgrading to Windows and it was about 6 GB.
    Prepare/Create and register an recovery partition, so the option Copy the Recovery Partition becomes available in the recovery drive UI  application.
    In elevated command run> RECIMG -CREATEIMAGE C:\REFRESHIMAGE<
    This will create a new custom.wim in a folder Refreshimage.
    Now lets get ready to register the path of the image, so our create recovery drive option(COPY THE RECOVERY PARTITION FROM THE PC TO THE RECOVERY DRIVE) becomes available.
    >  In the folder you created there will be a> custom.wim<
    change it to>INSTALL.wim<
    > Create a folder In Cd/directory using Elevated command> mkdir c:\Win8.1-Recovery,>
    Win81-Recovery<.
    > Copy the  INSTALL.WIM. Put in the Win81-recovery folder created.
    > Run in elevated commad>REAGENTC /SetOSImage /Path C:\Win81-Recovery\INSTALL.WIM /Index 1<
    Do not copy the arrows if using copy and paste, that is my way of pointing out lines of code
    Information provided by the link below, thanks Keith. I simplified the process for easy following and added my own tweak from trial and error for the install.

    All VMs on each of the affected servers have recovery points but
    When performing disk to disk to tape backups (d2D2T), tape backups will fail if a new disk based backup is not created before the next scheduled tape backup.  DPM always makes tape backups by mounting last successful disk based recovery point.
    This is so we don't need to transfer data over the network since that most recent data is already on the DPM server. Look to see why the disk recovery points are failing and correct that to prevent tape backups from failing.

    Start  > Control Panel > Backup Your Computer > Create a system repair disc
    it shows the error:
    System Repair disc could not be created
    the parameter is incorrect 0x80070057
    How to create system recovery discs ?

    Hi BH,
    I have read the link you suggested and tried to find HP Recovery Manager at my notebook.
    1) I typed Start > Search > "Recovery" but it was not installed.
    2) I  ran the HP Software Setup to check recommended and optional HP applications. HP Recovery Manager was not there.
    3) I downloaded HP Recovery Manager for Windows 7 and ran the installation
    I accepted the default folder.
    C:\SWSetup\sp45415
    It showed an installation form for a while and then completed with no message.
    4) I repeated action (1) but no HP Recovery Manager.
    5) I checked uninstall menu but no HP Recovery Manager.
    Please let me know what to do next ?

  • Cannot make Recovery DVDs for the G580 with Windows 8

    I notice that Windows 8 Notebooks are no longer being sold with Licenses affixed to the underside.  So if anything goes wrong (e.g. we have to replace the HDD at a later date)  we cannot just use a Windows 8 disk to restore the operating system.
    This means it is important to make sure we have recovery DVDs.
    With previous versions One Key Recovery had an option to make restore DVDs - it misses that option with Windows 8.
    Phoned Lenovo support who said that we should make the DVDs through the Windows Backup system, which again is fine but on both Lenovo's I have tried it on Windows 8 cannot make a backup to DVD.  Also even if we could make the windows backup or system repair disks they would not allow a complete factory restore to a brand new HDD.
    How do we make Recovery DVDs that would be bootable and would restore the Operating System to a brand new HDD if the worst should happen and the existing HDD suffered unrecoverable failure?  So far the only option that has come up from my various phonecalls is "buy a set of recovery discs for £25-£35 .... which would be a bit unfair having only had this 2 days.

    thanks for the feedback.
    Could you please check out the following link and see if it contains a possible solution, I am aware it states only Think products in the compatability list but there are "cross-over" points where something could be of relevance to other Lenovo products.
