Recurring Kernel Panics (Macbook Pro Late 2011)
Apologies if this issue has been tackled time and time again, but I've browsed through several threads and the conditions all sem to be different then mine.
I am experiencing what I believe to be kernel panics 5-6 times a day. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it; sometimes, the machine will reboot 3 times in a row and need to be manually powered off for an hour, other times I can get through several hours before the machine randomly crashes and reboots again. I've tried all of the quick fixes, have erased and restored from Time Machine (haven't done a full reinstall of ML yet). As of right now, running repair permissions and verify disk on the MBP say that "everything appears to be OK." So, at this point I'm stuck. Short of bringing it in, if anyone has any advice I'd be most appreciative.
The only other things that have been happening differently lately are that the computer is running a bit more sluggishly than I'm used to, and the computer seems to have a really hard time staying connected to my wifi connection (could be a completely separate issue, or just a bad bout of ISP service)
Here are two recent crash reports:

Thanks in advance if anyone decides to weigh i
It's definitely not fixed. Got here after 4 reboots on start up, random apps are missing from the dock, others are 256-color blocks, but I managed to get this crash report. Probably time to take it in but just wanted to see if you guys had any more advice before I do so.

Recurring kernel panics, Macbook Pro 13" mid-2010
The last month or so I have noticed that my computer gets very warm and the fan spins like crazy at times, mostly when I stream HD-video or visit sites with many GIFs running at the same time. Lately (last week or so) I have also been having recurring kernel panics and having hte computer just freezing up with weird graphics on the screen, sometimes several times in a row, also this mostly when I stream video. But sometimes very randomly, when the computer shouldn't be stressed at all. My amateur guess is that the GPU is the bad guy, and that I need to replace the logic board.
The only things I have done lately that might cause this is an OS-update to 10.8.5 sometime around two months ago, and around one month ago I encrypted the computer using filevault. Unfortunately I'm not into macs enough to be able to interpret the KP-report, maybe someone is able to do that and let me determine wether it is the logic board or not that need to be replaced? If it is the logic board I'm thinking I should be able to replace it myself, if I just get ahold of the right one. Or is it a hard thing to do?

Some versions of it are incompatible. Remove it and see whether there's an improvement.
Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and except as stated in this comment, I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software. -
MacBook Pro Late 2011 having GPU Panic "AGC GPU REGISTER RESTORE FAILED"
I'm having GPU Panic and reboot on my MacBook Pro Late 2011 Edition with Serial Number C0*******YR1.
It seems a known Hardware issue and it got surfaced at least for me in my MAC now and hence Apple should provide support in getting the Logic / Motherboard in warranty free of cost. Any idea how to proceed in pushing to get appropriate help from Apple Support.
<Edited By Host>Bring your MBP to the nearest Apple store and present you case to the management.
Ciao. -
Both Internal hard drives fail on Macbook Pro late-2011
Both internal hard drives (SSD and HDD) failed on Macbook Pro late-2011.
Setup: MBP closed with Thunderbolt display attached.
Problem on HDD-A
I called Apple Support to log an issue with my MBP2011. The system is made up of 2 drives - SSD (128GB) and HDD with 2 partitions HDD-A and HDD-B(original 750GB).
HDD-A has LionOSX 10.7 and HDD-B is storage. SSD has LionOSX on it as well. I normally boot HDD-A.
I was working on HDD-A and the Kernel Panic screen appeared prompting me to shutdown the machine and start it up again.
I tried to reboot HDD-A and the grey progress bar appeared for a long time. I then forced shutdown and rebooted into SSD.
I was able to boot from SSD and then I opened Disk Utility to check the drives. I verified the disk for HDD-A and there was an error. I then tried to repair disk and it couldn't repair it. A dialogue said the disk could not be repaired and that data should be backed up.
HDD-A was not visible in Finder but HDD-B was accessible.
I verified HDD-B and it was "ok".
I shutdown, booted from SSD, disk utility HDD-A and the same message occurred.
I called Apple Support and they advised that I boot from my external HDD which was a clone of HDD-A.
Solution
I was successfully able to boot from the Clone HDD-A.
HDD-A was able to be accessed and I could retrieve the files from HDD-A.
I copied over the latest files from HDD-A to an external drive.
Same Problem on SSD
Boot from SSD, i started working for about 3 hours, with the lid closed, and attached to the ACD.
Kernel Panic screen happened again on the SSD.
Couldn't boot boot from either SSD or HDD-A.
I booted from Cloned HDD-A, Disk Utility verify and repair returned errors on SSD. The same issue had occurred on the second drive.
Disk Recovery from a boot recovery USB thumb, Disk Utility, erased SSD, verify was ok.
Tried to install then there was an install error saying that SSD was damaged (large triangle warning icon). Tried 3 times, failed.
Boot from Recovery Drive HDD-A, downloaded LionOSX.
Next steps
Format HDD-A and HDD-B into 2 partitions
Install LionOSX on HDD A.
Note:
I did not do any software updates for about a week before 14.04.2012 and suspect it might be due to the virus.
I normally work with the lid closed and attached to the ACD, I also suspect that overheating caused both drives to fail. However, I have been using this system with the lid closed for atleast a week. One Kernel Panic screen occured.Depending on what you are doing on the computer, how hard you are working the computer, it should not overheat. And if it does it should shut down or get very slow because when it starts to overheat the CPU will be throttled back to a lower Ghz speed and or just shut down so it doesn't cause damage to the CPU. The Kernel Panics are a sign that something else is going on. This could be software or hardware.
If after wiping the drives and reinstall Lion on the SSD if the system is running OK then the drives are fine, IE they are not bad. There is something else corrupting them. Again this could be hardware or software, but I doubt it is heat. And using the MBP ion clamshell mode should not cause overheating or excessive heating of either of the drives.
Have you installed iStat Pro or Menu and kept and eye on the temps? If not install iStat Pro and keep and eye on the temps. I bet they do not get above the 150°- 180°F mark which although hot is not overheating.
Be very careful when calling Apple. Removing the DVD drive and installing a hard drive in that bay could void your warranty. The DVD is not a User Removable part and Apple frowns on doing that. So if you call them do not mention that you have replaced the DVD drive with another HDD.
Honestly I suspect you have a hardware problem. But the only way to know that is to install just Lion and your basic programs and run the system. Leave out any AV type software, if you are running some. If you don't get any kernel panics thenn install some of your other software, one programm at a time. If with just the OS and basic software you get a kernel panic then it is hardware related and needs to be checked out by Apple. If you do that re-install the DVD and the original HDD with just the OS on it before you take it in. -
Hi everyone,
I have a big problem with my MacBook Pro late 2011, suddenly while working without connecting the charger and it is 100% charged the screen would go black and I would need to hold the power button to shut it down and then power it up again, The second issue is the superdrive whenever I use a disc it spins it for 3 times before ejecting it to me, tried resetting PRAM and tried re-installing mac os x mavericks, but no solution so far and about the superdrive I bought a cleaner disc and tried to insert it, the superdrive would spin it 3 times and ejects it after that. Saw the disk permission solution and tried it once and I think there is a problem with that because this is the second time I try it and it was saying that there were problems.
Sorry for being long.
Thanks in advance.Depending on what you are doing on the computer, how hard you are working the computer, it should not overheat.
My MacBook Pro late 2011 has recently slowed to snails pace after successfully running Yosemite from a clean install for many months.
I always have Activity monitor running to keep an eye on memory and CPU. When the issue started, I noticed Kernel_task for the first time and its 0.5 to 1GB.
I have verified/repaired the disk and repaired permissions in Safe Mode. Also done SMC and PRAM resets.
CPU usage is usually 2% or less unless number crunching in Excel or watching videos.
I created a new user account, which is much faster in opening Safari and searching. There is no Kernel_task showing for the new user.
Cardo-updater is for a motorcycle bluetooth headset.
Xquartz is for GIMP.
Rogueamoeba is for Audio Hijack Pro.
These three have been in use since day 1 of Yosemite and before in Mavericks.
Etrecheck results
Oddities - I don't know what the disk info not mounted means. Not mounting the Recovery disk looks scary to me as uninformed.
Time machine disk too small - thought I was using a 1 TB drive !!
Problem description:
MBP late 2011 has become very slow after a few months after a Yosemite clean install. Kernel_task memory circa 1 GB. CPU activity is a few percent. Created a new user. Activity monitor does not show Kernel_task at all. Much faster as the new user. Permissions repaired in Safe mode. SMC and PRAM reset done. Short hardware test (option D on boot) - no problems. I have VirtualBox to run XP at times for some Win apps.

Macbook pro late 2011 starting problem
I'm running OS Maverics 10.9.3 version on Macbook pro late 2011. Few days ago the OS got much slower than normal system. Then i installed the the new OS but it was good for few hours. Then after few hours it became slower again. Then I changed the HDD and installed the new OS. But I found the same problem again. Then I removed all backup files from the HDD. After removing all items it became to work normally. But after 15/17 days later when i'm trying to turn on the macbook a flashing folder icon appears then i pull down the display for a while. When the lights gone then i turn on again and it works normally. I tried the internet recovery option by pressing the (ctrl+R) button but it takes much time. But nothing happened. What is the problem?
Here is my etrecheck result:

Boot into recovery (OPTION key down) and select the recovery partition.
From the 4 option menu select Disk Utility.
Run Disk Utility>First Aid, Verify and Repair.
If it says the disk cannot be repaired, replace it with a new HDD.
If it says it is good, take out the disk, place it in an enclosure and connect it to the MBP via USB.
If it boots the MBP, then the internal SATA cable is faulty and should be replaced.

After upgrading to yosemite my macbook pro late 2011 does a random sound from time to time.
After upgrading to yosemite my macbook pro late 2011 does a random sound from time to time. Its completely random and i already checked all apps in use and its not from them.
Sounds like Notifications app.
Maybe some other app. In SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems tab: remove all entries with the minus sign underneath. This will not uninstall anything, you have to start those apps by hand now. Restart.
Still there?
Yes: Restart again while holding the shift key, this will start the mac in SafeMode: only the necessary items are loaded to run.
Still there?
Yes: Make an etrecheck list and post it here.
No: Restart, put the items in the LoginItems back, one by one, restart after each entry, and you will find the "culprit"
Please report accordingly. I will be back in 24 hours. -
How do i use my imac 21.5" 2011 as a display for my macbook pro late 2011, through thunderbolt cable ? I have tried and it doesnt seem to work, neither does target disk mode.
Could it be a borked cable ? I just bought it new from the store today, i have updated both imac and macbook pro to latest thunderbolt firmware and updates. Both 10.7.3.
MacBook Pro:
Vendor Name: Apple, Inc.
Device Name: MacBook Pro
UID: 0x0001000A17016E60
Firmware Version: 22,1
Port:
Status: No devices connected
Link Status: 7
Port Micro Firmware Version: FFFF.FF.FFYou are correct, here is what Apple Says:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3775
I was able to find these instructions, however they referr to 2009-2011 27" iMacs. I think it's the same, if it's not then contact Apple directly for instructions. If either of the machines is less than 90 days old or covered by AppleCare then call AppleCare tomorrow for help, they should be able to easily answer this for you. You will find the number in your manual or you can use the AppleCare Contact Info link.
Your iMac should automatically recognize the presence of a digital video signal at the Mini DisplayPort and enter Target Display Mode.
If your iMac does not automatically enter Target Display Mode, press command + F2 to manually enter Target Display Mode. -

Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless. -
I am using windows 8.1 pro on my Japanese macbook pro (Late 2011) and enabled japanese language but the problem is that when i press caps lock (lower left corner) it changes the input method from english to japanese. I checked my on screen keyboard (OSK) in windows and its different from my physical keyboard i.e. keys are different on my physical keyboard compared to OSK. Can anyone help me?
Thanks
TenadonaCan I suggest the following articles, which are worth reviewing?
Boot Camp: About keyboards and key assignment for Microsoft Windows - Apple Support
Boot Camp: Apple Wireless Keyboard keyboard mapping in Windows - Apple Support
Boot Camp: Windows commands on an Apple keyboard
Windows does require language packs to be installed, if you want the physical keyboard to match the on-screen keyboard. -
I tried to install windows 7 in my macbook pro late 2011 but i tried to create partions after it installed and it turn to dynamic disks and i can't access mac or win 7 what should I do i cant format it because i dont have a backup
It's not that you can't format it because you have no backup, it's because you'll lose everything when you do. Lesson learned. Always have a backup.

When I boot up my MacBook Pro late 2011 while pressing the option key it should show the recovery icon which it doesn't.
How do I install this portion of Yosemite? This was changed with Yosemite. The recovery is hidden when booting with option. Hold command and R when booting to get into recovery (without option). If you see the globe, then it is actually going to Internet recovery, which means you do not have a local recovery.

Hi there,
I just installed Adobe Photoshop CC 2014 on my MacBook Pro Late 2011 with 8 GB RAM after already having installed CS 5.1 on my MacBook.
So I have both installed at the same time.
But: CS 5.1 is much faster! The first time opening CC 2014 was really shocking, because it was so laggy and still is, and I don't know why this is.
I didn't do any weird performance settings, neither did I change anything else. I open a document in CC 2014 and it takes nearly double the time
compared to opening the same document in CS 5.1.
And with CS 5.1 running the app Memory Clean tells me that i have 1.5 GB of free memory, with CC 2014 running my memory is completely in use.
Are there any tipps/tricks/issues with having both installed at the same time? Am I missing something that is leading to that specific performance
issue?
I would be glad if someone could help me, because otherwise I have to say that upgrading to CC 2014 and buying the CC license for one year
didn't turn out to be a good thing.
Thanks!Nothing here?
The MacBook now has 16 GB RAM, but not much change. Photoshop CS 5.1 performance is great after splitting the PSD into 3 different ones, Photoshop CC 2014 still much slower.
Does anyone experience the same problems, especially with many groups / layers / smart objects?
And is it possible to get back the money for purchasing the yearly CC license when I'm not satisfied with the product?
Thank you. -
Hi guys,
I would like to use airplay mirroring on apple tv (3rd generation) with my macbook pro late 2011, unfortunately the airplay option does not appear in the display preferences (see screenshot below). Did someone have this problem before? Please advise!
Thank you!
TialWelcome to the Apple Support Communities
See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5404 Your computer is compatible with AirPlay Mirroring, but you have to upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion to get AirPlay Mirroring.
Make a Time Machine backup and/or a clone with Carbon Copy Cloner, open App Store and purchase Mountain Lion. When the download finishes, the installer will appear, so follow the steps to upgrade. To turn on AirPlay Mirroring, select the AirPlay icon in the menu bar or open System Preferences > Displays

Good tutorials for a kid to work through
My son who is almost 12 is interested in learning flex. I've started him on some very basic stuff but I'm still learning myself and could probably end up teach some bad habits. So, I was wondering, If any of you could suggest some good tutorials
