Red close button quits application now

This morning, I found the red close button does not hide app, but quit app.
It worked well so far, does anyone know how to fix it?
What I have done recently.
upgraded 10.8.2 two days ago
upgraded VMware fusion from 4.1.3 to 5.0.1
checked all system setting, but could not find how to fix it.
I like the hide feature and get used to it.
Thanks!!

The problem is the same with Commnd-V, of course.
Here is how the button looks like,
I noticed it happens mainly when one application is active and I try to close a window which is not active.

Hi - I'm not only having trouble waking up my MBP from sleep and having to restart repeatedly which is a pain in itself, but now when it restarted, I have these black boxes surrounding things, e.g., there is a black box around the red "close" button on the upper left corner of this page.  There is also an oblong resizable black box sitting on top of anything.  The content changes depending on the actions I take.  Right now it says, "You are currently on a close button.  To click this button, which closes the current window, press Control-Option-Space."  Right now I'm open in Firefox, but it doesn't matter if only Finder is open, it's still there.  I've tried closing all my applications and restarting and I also reset the PRAM.  It won't go away.  It's probably something simple, but I don't know how to get rid of it.  Any suggestions are welcome.
    Thanks,
    Janet

Thanks so much.  I saw this on "desktop strangeness" immediately after I posted and tried to retract my question.  It worked perfectly.  I'm not sure how VoiceOver got turned on unless something happened when I was trying to wake up the computer.  I open the lid and it flashes whatever is open and then the screen goes black and I can't wake it up.  Still looking for the resolution to this.

  • How to bring back the black dot on the red close button for edited/unsaved files?

I've ticked the box for "Ask to keep changes when closing documents" System Preferences / General. I'm operating within Mac OS 10.8.4 (Mountain Lion).
When I make changes to an open file in most every program, a black dot appears on the red close button in the top-left corner of the file's window. This convention goes back a decade to early Mac OS X, as I recall.
However, I don't see this behavior in a few applications lately, such as Xcode 4.6.3 or QuickTime Player 10.2.
Anyone know how to bring this functionality back?
    Thank you.

    Nobody knows? Not even administrators?
Please it would be really nice to have help on that to take all the benefit of the remote app.
Thank you very much in advance.

  • Red (close) button becomes dark and windows does not close

Sometimes when I click the red (close window) button, it becomes darker and the window does not close, and the app seems inactive. I have to click the title bar (sometimes many times, the lag time to ) and the windows can close, or it can come back with the red button "normal". Very annoying when I have to close many specific windows as it completely breaks the flow of activities.
Mail seems to be a application where it happens often, but it happens also with safari, omnifocus...
Any idea how to fix this?
    I use a trakpad/MBA mid 2011 OS X 10.9.4

  • Red Close Button Problem

    Hi there,
After i have installed the mavericks update for my macbook pro, i had started having a problem in closing my apps or browser or files with the red X button,
When i click on the button to close my apps it doesnt work at all unless i drag the app or browsers a little bit and then close them. This is annoying, So if someone can help me fix this bug or something.

A Safe Mode boot deletes some system caches that may help.
Startup your Mac in Safe Mode
A Safe Mode boot takes much longer than a normal boot so be patient.
Once you are in Safe Mode, click Restart from the Apple () menu.
    Then try the red button.

  • Clicking Red Button Quits Application

In Flash CS5 for Mac, when I click the red button in the upper left corner of the document, the application quits instead of just closing the window. In CS3 this didn't happen. The document window would close and the Welcome Screen would appear.

Yes, the grey button is there, but the red button shouldn't quit the application. This diverges from the Mac OS X normal functionality. Adobe doesn't do this with PS, DW, ID, FW, or AI. It appears, near as I can tell, only in the Flash related apps. I believe LR acts this way as well. There is no way to turn this off (that I have found) and it shouldn't happen this way. There are times I want to just close the APP window without quitting the app. Adobe if you must mess with usability then at least make a way to turn off the "new functionality."
And while I am at it: bring back the right-click file name on the window.

  • I click on firefox but a dead tab shows up and I cannot find home page and it won't go away by pressing the red close button. What can I do to restore my tabs?

My tabs are all disappeared behind a link I opened which is blank and dead, and I cannot close it to restore my tabs or get to any website other than this dead link... Help!

  • When closing Firefox (v:3.6.13), using the red "close" button, the firefox.exe process remaines at top of the "Windows Task Manager" window and continues to use the majority of CPU time.

After an attempt to close the Mozilla Firefox page, on every occasion, the firefox.exe process is found at the top of the list when ordering the listed 'processes' by CPU time... even though the web page is gone.
If an attempt is made to restart Mozilla, the system declares that the current Mozilla process should be closed.
If the firefox.exe process is explicitly closed in the Task Manager, only then can Firefox be restarted.

Does that also happen if you use File > Exit Firefox?

  • I cannot close a web page but it keeps appearing every time I open firefox 3.5./ Imac. There is no red close button on that page, no tabs, no option to refresh - only to press ok on some prize. Any suggestions?

I can't access the tab to give you more info about the URL.
I have cleared history, cookies and closed the computer but nothing works

It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
Delete the sessionstore.js [2] file and possible sessionstore-##.js [3] files with a number and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

  • Where is the red close button and green minimize button gone in safari?

Is it no longer possibble to minimize the window in safari?

    Control-Command-F
Will Toggle back and forth from Full Screen mode.
Or you can move the mouse to the top of the screen to display the menu bar, Select the "View" Pull-down Menu, then "Exit Full Screen".

  • Fix for close button delay

Trying to find fix for this problem. On various windows the red Close button stops responding to mouse clicks until I stop pressing my mouse buttons for a delay of sometimes up to 1 second. Really annoying! :/
You can reproduce the problem easily with these steps:
Find an image and open it in Preview.
Click the dropdown in the top left corner that has options for Content Only, Thumbnails, etc...
Without closing the dropdown, click the window's red Close button quickly again and again. The dropdown closes but the Close button ignores input until you stop clicking for about 1 second.
I can get the same thing to happen in other windows (even Finder), and don't always need something extra (like a dropdown to be open) for the Close button to stop responding; I just used Preview as an example since this is easy to reproduce.
I am aware of https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2793530?start=0&tstart=0 but I didn't see a solution there. Increasing the double click speed is not a solution (I am fine with the double click speed default setting, and don't want it to be faster; plus it doesn't fix the problem at all in Preview).
    Thanks

Did you try setting up another user account to see if the same thing happens? The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application uninstaller. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • Apple Mail App Doesn't Close When Quit Button Is Pressed

My apple mail application on my iMac Running Mountain Lion is responding extremely slow and doesn't close when I press the quit button.
I have to use force quit to close the mail application.
Also the mail appliation stops spontanuously and a crash report is generated which I send to apple.
Problem exist now for about 3 weeks.
I have 4 email boxes (icloud using imap; and 3 pop3)
Rebuilding my mailboxes didn't solve the problem
    Hope someone has a sollution.

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.
    Back up all data.
    Quit Mail.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Relaunch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you'll have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Post your results.
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Firefox frequently freezes. I can't click on anything (tabs, menu buttons, bookmarks, etc.) The only button that works is the upper right close button which when clicked will ask me if I want to "save & quit." Then I have to restart. Help fixing this?

Frequently when I use Firefox it will all of a sudden freeze. It no longer will accept any user input from the keyboard or mouse. I cannot click on any of the open tabbed pages I have or on my bookmarks or any of the menu buttons. Nothing works. When it happens if it is loading a page it will just freeze in the middle of loading it. I've tried to see if the freezes are caused when it loads certain types of content (java, flash, etc...) but there seems to be no rhyme or reason as to when it happens or with what types of pages. I cannot find a pattern. The ONLY button that works is the close button in the upper right hand corner (X). I can click on that and then Firefox will prompt me with it's regular message asking me if I want to save and quit, quit, or cancel. I'll hit save and quit and then reopen Firefox. It opens my tabs and if I was in the middle of a post it generally will still remember the text I've typed (except Facebook!).
It's beginning to drive me nuts and I'm really hoping to find a fix to this.

You will also notice that your shift key will be emulated. Meaning that keys you will try to press will press but they will act like you are pressing the shift key when you are doing them.
Try this, minimize the firefox window by pressing the tab on your taskbar. After doing that maximize it again. You will magically be able to click any link on your page. When you navigate to a new page however, the entire situation will start all over. My only remedy is rebooting and hoping it doesn't happen again soon.

  • Close Web Dynpro Application on click of button

    Hi,
I have a Web Dynpro Appliaction which would be open in a Portal iView. I have a close button in the application. How do I close the application on the click of "Close" button.
    Thanks,
    Prasanna.

    Hi prasanna,
First, it is very bad decision to make decisions instead of user. Just redirect him to logoff page and let close window himself.
In WebDynpro you may use Exit plug on interface view with parameter Url (notice the case) of type string.
Then you may previously fire this plug with JavaScript url: javascript:void(window.top.close())
In recent versions of WD this will not work. So you have to redirect user via exit plug to some static html page, that contains in header <script>window.top.close();</script>
Check the below thread,u will get an solution for your question....
