Reduce downtime required for support patch application

Dear Experts,
I would like to know if there are any tips / notes we need to follow during application of
support patches to reduce the downtime window ( as during patch application , system is not
usable for normal users ) , any temparary parameter changes to Oracle RDBMS which we can
activate before appication of support patch and then revert the same once Patches are loaded
for normal Day operations.
Is there any note which talks specific settings which could enhance the performance
of support patch application process on Oracle RDBMS.
Regards,
RR

To my understanding if i select Downtime minimized some phases of Patch application could
be carried out when users are online and for others would get notified in SPAM for downtime
, so we just need to lock users and perform start for those rest of Import phases.
Yes this is correct, theoretically you can apply single patches with downtime minimized one after another. But this does not make a lot of sense obviously, because you will have several distinct downtimes then. So to apply one queue containing all packages is the way to go.
Regarding your questions on the benefits, i am afraid the answer here is: it depends, as for most performance tuning options you will have to test carefully if the are working.
For the db_cache_size consider:
- is my db_cache_size smaller than 1000M?
- do i have enough free memory on my server?
- am i seeing low buffer hit ratio while applying support packages?
If all questions are a yes, then i recommend you increase it to 2000M, it is easy to do. But if you don't have free memory on the server, then you will severly hurt performance by causing paging. If you don't have low buffer hit ratio (or you have lightspeed disks , then the tuning will not speed up anything.
As you see, you have options, but there isn't a single speed button that solves your problem.

  • Minimum system requirements for installing Oracle Application Testing Suite

    Hi,
Can anyone tell me what are the minimum system requirements for intalling Oracle Application Testing Suite?
    Thanks in Advance

    From the release notes (12.1.0.2).
    System Requirements
Oracle Application Testing Suite has the following system requirements:
    4
    3.1 Oracle Functional Testing/OpenScript
Oracle Functional Testing’s OpenScript scripting platform has the following system
    requirements:
    ■ Operating System (32-bit and 64-bit versions): Windows XP, Windows Vista,
    Windows 2003, Windows 7, Windows 2008
    ■ Memory: Minimum 1 GB
    ■ System: x86, 32-bit or 64-bit processor, 2.6 GHz or faster
    ■ Disk Space: 4 GB minimum
    ■ Browser: Internet Explorer 7.x, 8.x., 9.x and Firefox 3.5/3.6, 6.x
    3.2 Oracle Load Testing
Oracle Load Testing has the following system requirements:
    ■ Operating System (32-bit and 64-bit versions): Windows XP, Windows Vista,
    Windows 2003, Windows 7, Windows 2008, Windows 2008 R2. Oracle Enterprise
    Linux 5.1, 5.2 64, 4u8.
    ■ Memory: Minimum 2 GB.
    ■ System: x86, 32-bit or 64-bit processor, 2.6 GHz or faster
    ■ Disk Space: 10 GB minimum free (at least 3 GB free on the system drive)
    ■ Browser: Internet Explorer 7.x, 8.x, 9.x, Firefox 3.5/3.6, 6.x
    ■ Database: Oracle EE 10g or 11g, XE 10g
    ■ Application Server: Oracle WebLogic 11g (10.3.5.0). Oracle Application Testing
Suite requires the standard WebLogic Server installation (which includes jrocket
jdk.). It does not support generic versions of WebLogic Server installation (such as
    those that use wls1035_generic.jar).
    ■ Oracle Load Testing Agent also supported on Linux 32-bit & 64-bit, in addition to
Windows 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems listed above
Note: These are minimum requirements only and actual
requirements for the Oracle Load Testing Server will vary depending
on the size and configuration of your load test. If you are running
larger load tests, of greater than 1000 Virtual Users, you should
consider deploying Oracle Load Testing on a faster server class
    machine with additional RAM recommended.
Note: Oracle recommends running the Oracle Load Testing Server
and Agents on separate systems for production load testing. The
amount of memory required on the Oracle Load Testing Agent
systems may increase based on the number of Virtual Users that will
be assigned to run on each Agent. For more information, visit the
QA/Testing Technology Center on Oracle Technology Network or
    contact your Oracle representative.
    5
    3.3 Oracle Test Manager
Oracle Test Manager has the following system requirements:
    ■ Operating System (32-bit and 64-bit versions): Windows XP, Windows Vista,
    Windows 2003, Windows 7, Windows 2008, Windows 2008 R2. Oracle Enterprise
    Linux 5.1, 5.2, 4u8.
    ■ Memory: Minimum 2 GB.
    ■ System: x86, 32-bit or 64-bit processor, 2.6 GHz or faster
    ■ Disk Space: 10 GB minimum free (at least 3 GB free on the system drive)
    ■ Browser: Internet Explorer 7.x, 8.x, 9.x, Firefox 3.5/3.6, 6.x
    ■ Database: Oracle EE 10g or 11g, XE 10g
    ■ Application Server: Oracle WebLogic 11g (10.3.5.0). Oracle Application Testing
Suite requires the standard WebLogic Server installation (which includes jrocket
jdk.). It does not support generic versions of WebLogic Server installation (such as
    those that use wls1035_generic.jar).
    3.4 Additional Notes
The following are additional notes about system requirements:
    ■ The ATS installer can automatically install and configure an Oracle 10g Express
Edition (XE) database for use with Oracle Load Testing and Oracle Test Manager.
Although this is useful for demos, for production usage switching to Oracle's 11g
Enterprise Edition database is highly recommended. Oracle 11g Standard Edition
and Oracle 10g EE or SE are also supported.
    ■ System memory requirements do not take into account other processes that may
be running and using memory on your system, reducing free uncommitted
    memory available.
    ■ When installed on the same machine, Oracle Load Testing and Oracle Test
Manager will run on the same server and use shared system resources. Oracle
Functional Test/OpenScript is a separate application that have its own memory
    and CPU requirements.
    ■ The ATS products will run in 32-bit compatibility mode when installed on 64-bit
operating systems. It is possible for Oracle Application Testing Suite to be installed
on an existing WebLogic server. However, if the pre-installed WebLogic server is
JRockit plus WebLogic (64-bit) environment, some functions in Oracle Application
Testing Suite will not work properly. Oracle Application Testing Suite can be
    installed on a 32-bit WebLogic, but not a 64-bit.
    ■ The legacy Oracle Functional Testing, VB-based scripting platform and associated
components (such as Job Scheduler) are no longer included with the ATS installer
Note: These are minimum requirements only and actual
requirements for Oracle Test Manager will vary depending on the
quantity of test assets stored and number of concurrent users
accessing the application. If you have a large quantity of test cases,
requirements or issues stored and/or are deploying Oracle Test
Manager for a team greater than 10 users, you should consider
deploying Oracle Test Manager on a faster server class machine with
    additional RAM recommended.

  • Server Requirements for Launching J2EE Application on web

    Hi,
I am new to web technologies, I apologize if I am asking a very basic question. I have a developed a J2EE Web Application for Online Assessment. I use Tomcat as server and MySQL database. I am expecting around 1000 users to simultaneously undergo our assessment. The assessment is a computerized adaptive assessment. For running the statistical calculation, I am keeping some information in the User Session, which will be around 10 Kilobytes per user.
I was trying to understand what would be the minimum system requirements (on processing speed and ram) for supporting this application.
Is storing more information of Session could be a bottle neck for me in supporting maximum concurrent users?
    Anticipating your help.
    Thanks

You should just be able to put the SWF and wrapper HTML file
on the server, and it just "serves" the swf and wrapper file. I
don't think there is anything else you need, unless you are using
    LifeCycle DS.

  • Reducing time required for ABAP-only copyback (system copy) process

Our company is investigating how to reduce the amount of time it takes to perform a copyback (system copy) from a production ABAP system to a QA system.  We use a similar process for all ABAP-only systems in our landscape, ranging from 3.1h systems to ECC6.0 ABAP-only systems on both DB2 and Oracle database platforms, and the process takes approximately two weeks of effort from end-to-end (this includes time required to resolve any issues encountered).
Here is an overview of the process we use:
u2022     Create and release backup transports of key system tables and IDu2019s (via client copy) in the QA system to be overwritten (including RFC-related tables, partner profile and IDOC setup-related tables,  scheduled background jobs, archiving configuration, etc.).
u2022     Reconfigure the landscape transport route to remove QA system from transport landscape.
u2022                    Create a virtual import queue attached to the development system to capture all transports released from development during the QA downtime.
u2022     Take a backup of the target production database.
u2022     Overwrite the QA destination database with the production copy.
u2022     Localize the database (performed by DBAu2019s).
u2022     Overview of Basis tasks (for smaller systems, this process can be completed in one or two days, but for larger systems, this process takes closer to 5 days because of the BDLS runtime and the time it takes to import larger transport requests and the user ID client copy transports):
    o     Import the SAP license.
o     Execute SICK to check the system.
o     Execute BDLS to localize the system.
o     Clear out performance statistics and scheduled background jobs.
    o     Import the backup transports.
o     Import the QA client copy of user IDu2019s.
    o     Import/reschedule background jobs.
o     Perform any system-specific localization (example: for a CRM system with TREX, delete the old indexes).
u2022     Restore the previous transport route to include the QA system back into the landscape.
u2022     Import all transports released from the development system during the QA system downtime.
Our companyu2019s procedure is similar to the procedure demonstrated in this 2010 TechEd session:
    http://www.sapteched.com/10/usa/edu_sessions/session.htm?id=825
Does anyone have experience with a more efficient process that minimizes the downtime of the QA system?
Also, has anyone had a positive experience with the system copy automation tools offered by various companies (e.g., UC4, Tidal)?
    Thank you,
    Matt

    Hi,
    > One system that immediately comes to mind has a database size of 2TB.  While we have reduced the copyback time for this system by running multiple BDLS sessions in parallel, that process still takes a long time to complete.  Also, for the same system, importing the client copy transports of user ID's takes about 8 hours (one full workday) to complete.
    >
For BDLS run, I agree with Olivier.
    > The 2 weeks time also factors in time to resolve any issues that are encountered, such as issues with the database restore/localization process or issues resulting from human error.  An example of human error could be forgetting to request temporary ID's to be created in the production system for use in the QA system after it has been initially restored (our standard production Basis role does not contain all authorizations required for the QA localization effort).
    >
For the issues that you encounter because of system copy, you can minimize this time period as you would be doing it on periodic basis (making some task list) and you can make a note of issues that you faced in previous run. So, normally i don't count it as system copy time
    Thanks

  • System requirements for stand-alone application

    Hi all
Could you tell me system requirements for stand alone app, which requires run time engine and variable engine to work.

Are you wondering about the space requirements?  This of course will depend on the application.  You can get an idea for this by creating an installer which includes the run-time engine and the variable engine, and then perhaps installing it locally.

  • Transport Directory / Directory for support patches not found

I found that on our QAS & PROD system the profile param DIR_TRANS are exactly the same.
I can transport to both systems.
The problem I have is to upload Support Patches from the server.
In other systems I have uploaded them assuming that sapmnt\EPS\in existed in PRODN, but I cannot find the directory usr\sap\trans\EPS\in on the PRODN system
Would it be safe to add the profile DIR_EPS_ROOT in PRODN so that I can direct the SPAM trxn to pick up the unpacked support patches from the server to a specific directory?  This would be a standard change the the profile and restarting SAP correct?

  • Downtime required for ECC 6.0 service pack application

Does anyone have any data on the amount of time required to apply service packs to ECC 6.0 when DB2 z/OS is the backend database?
We have done several tests in a sandbox system and the best case we have gotten so far using production LPAR weights is 6.5 hours to go from SP10 to SP11. Our z9 has 158 MSUs.
SAP has also done some benchmarking on a z900 lab machine with >400 MSUs and gotten similar runtimes.
Applying the same service pack to a sandbox on Windows x64 with SQLServer 2005 takes 2.5 hours.
We would like to understand the 2 to 3 times difference in runtimes and improve the DB2 z/OS case.
    Brian

    Omer,
Thanks for the suggestions. They are not at all out line as I would rather hear something I already know than not hear something I don't even know to check.
    To answer:
    1) Everything in our landscape uses ficon (DASD and tape)
    2) We initially implemented with the SAP directories (sapmnt, usrsap, and trans) on NFS for z/OS. Since we installed ASCS/SCS on USS for z/OS for HA, the filesystems were in HFS and then shared out via NFS to the application servers. Performance was horrible once there got to be more than about 1000 files in a directory, which happens quite often with spool requests and job logs in production ECC. We opened a PMR with IBM z/OS NFS support, and at their suggestion changed from HFS to ZFS, made sure the LPAR which owned the ZFS filesystems was also the LPAR running NFS, etc. We never found a performance silver bullet and testing we did with a zLinux NFS server on the exact same CEC and DASD proved to be 3-4 times faster than NFS on z/OS, so we moved all the SAP files to NFS on zLinux.
    3) I don't have exact figures, but the majority of time seems to be spent in the IMPORT_PROPER phase. During our next test cycle I will note the times of the various phases from the import log.

  • Mac Browsers for supporting HTMLDB Applications

Does anybody know what browsers on MACs can support HTMLDB Web Applications (i.e., certified)?

From what I understand HTMLDB is about 95% compliant to XHTML specification. I really don't know what Mac Browsers are "Certified" on HTMLDB, but when I create applications I test out everything about the app on all the available certified Mac browsers (IE, FireFox, Safari, Natscape). So far HTMLDB has performed wonderfully in all the browsers. You could look at various browsers and see how well they handle the XHTML specs for further information. Someone may be more definitive about your question, but this is what I know.

  • How to reduce bandwidth required for spa9000 to spa941 link

Anyone can help me with this situation?
I have an spa400-spa9000-spa941 configuration over a satellite internet link. It works fine, during low traffic hours (night) but during the day the voice quality goes really bad (cutted voice, constant interruptions, etc).
We have already measured the bandwidth consumed by the spa941 to spa9000 link, and have found it at 80kbps upstream by 80 kbps downstream. We require to reduce it at least half of the actual values (40 kbps up by 40 kbps down).
We have already tried changing the codecs through the spa941 configuration menu: ( EXT1 –> Audio Configuration -> Preferred Codec -> G726-16 ), without success.
It seems that although we do that changes, the link between spa941 and spa9000 keeps working with the G711u codec.
We require that both calls coming in and out the spa9000 are compressed with a less bandwith consuming codec.
Which options do we need to change in the spa9000 and spa941 in order to make the G726-16 (or a less bandwidth consuming codec) the default codec between both equipments?
We are using firmware version 5.1.9 for spa9000 and version 5.1.8 for spa941.

I have the following options selected in SPA9000 SIP configuration:
    SDP Payload Types
    -->RTP-Start-Loopback Codec: G726-16
    Internal Music Source Parameters
    -->Internal Music LBR Codec: G726-16
-->Internal Music Preferred Codec: Low Bit Rate
    Auto Attendant Parameters
    -->AA LBR Codec: G726-16
-->AA Preferred Codec: Low Bit Rate
... and the following options selected in SPA941 EXT1 configuration:
    Audio Configuration
    -->Preferred Codec: G726-16
    -->Use Pref Codec Only: Yes
With this configuration when we try to dial from SPA941 to remote SPA9000 we get BUSY tone.
Any other thing we should check?

  • Hardware requirements for ipad/iphone application development.

    Hello,
I'd like to know what is the "comfortable" hardware requirement  to develop fairly big  ipad/iphone applications in a professional environment.
Comfortable = No hardware upgrades of any kind for at least one year of heavy programming.
I'd like to have solid numbers:
    CPU
    Memory (in GB)
    Hard drive size.
    Thank You for any help.

raw power? More than enough to run Xcode.
You asked for minimum. Any new Mac today is enough. Not sure I'd bother with an Air and small screens, tho they will do in a pinch.
Have you walked into an Apple Store and tried using any of the computers on display? What types of apps will you be expected to work on? AirPlay and iCloud part of the apps you'll build? Universal apps or just iPhone or iPad? What do you do when you need several windows on the deskop?
What newcomers seem to overlook are the ancillary demands from the associated text, graphics, movie and audio editors that all seem to be simultaneously required.
I run three monitors and 1/2 dozen test mules. I keep full backups at all times. Do the math. A professional environment doesn't sound like it would require any minimums. You haven't laid out any details so it's difficult to give more than casual advice I think. You're asking questions, tho, so your on the right track.
Good luck in any case and Happy Holidays!

  • Schedules for Support Patches and Canadian HCM

We have recently upgraded to ECC 6.0 , 64bit Unicode SQL Server 2005.
Next project underway is to migrate Peoplesoft into SAP (HCM).
My question to all Canadians out there is what strategy is anyone using in order to ensure that ALL HCM (Payroll) Patches are applied according to Tax Requirements etc..
Also , we are just now patching to most recent and whatever is available on the SAP Marketplace, but I know that SAP is posting the next set of patches June 9.
Any advise would greatly be appreciated
    Maria

    Hello,
I agree with Eric that your HR people should be asking for these, they're quite different than the other patches and it shouldn't be your responsibility.
They definitely should be doing the legal change patches for compliance with Revenue Canada, which come out twice a year (mid-year and year-end) in a draft and then a final transport. If you use the draft transport to get a jump on testing be prepared to apply lots of notes as they refine it for the final transport.
If you haven't heard from your HR people by June 1st or December 1st you might want to give them a gentle reminder.

  • I can't understand if "samples" are required for BI Beans application?

Sorry but, I'm walking through the documentaion to build a BI Beans object, but in the OLAP Connection testing, it told me that it isn't measures to make query. I don't install sample schemas (Common Schema, BI Beans Samples). Have I to install them before maka anything?
    Please help.
    Thanks in advance.

You need to install the BI Beans catalog into your database. The BI Beans catalog owner is not installed by default. Please read the BI Beans documentation it will explain how to set and configure BI Beans to access an OLAP schema and how to install the BI Beans catalog.
For more information on creating an OLAP schema please refer to the documentation and tutorials on the OLAP home page on OTN. There are examples that show how to use Analytic Workspace Manager and Warehouse Builder to create an OLAP schema. It will also explain the database priviledges you need to assign to a user to manage and query an OLAP schema.
Although your database is pre-enabled with the OLAP option this is a costed option for the database and you have to pay additional license fees to use this type of schema. If you are planning to create an application for use within your company you cannot make the application avaiable to your users without first contacting your Oracle Account Manager and paying for use of the OLAP option.
