Reference entities in View Objects

Hi,
I have several questions related to the use of multiple entities in a View Object.
Suppose I have three entity objects: Product (N) <-> (0..1) Manufacturer (N) -> (1) State.
(In a state there are several manufacturers, and each manufacturer makes several products. Of several products the manufacturer is unknown, so that's why there's a 0..1 on the manufacturer side)
I want to create a view on products, ProductView, and I want to display the manufacturer name and the state name, so I've added these as reference entities to the ProductView.
When doing so, several questions popped up:
1) The View Object Wizard did not generate a where clause. If this is because I use more than one reference entity, then I don't understand why it wouldn't be able to generate the proper whereclause, since I've selected the associations between the entity objects, so it should be able to derive a proper whereclause from that.
2) Left outer joins can only be performed by adding '(+)' to the query. However I would like to use the LEFT OUTER JOIN clause, since that is a bit more flexible (because I can add several expressions to the ON() clause. I can only use a LEFT OUTER JOIN if I create an expert mode query and do it myself. It would be nice if jdeveloper supported this type of query.
3) In the query tab, the query uses weird aliases for the fieldnames. Since there was already an Id attribute in the base view object, the primary key of the second and third entityes had been named Id1 and Id2. I immediately renamed those to manufacturer_id (as I've read in one of the howto's on this forum). Still, the query uses the aliases ID1 and ID2 ('Manufacturer.ID AS ID1'), which makes the whereclause that I must right unreadable. Again, the only way to change this is to write my own query in expert mode.
Thoughts?
Greetings,
Ivo

[*]Would be nice if BC4J supported left outer joins
We do. This is exactly why the Expert Mode Query feature is there.
In addition to LEFT OUTER JOIN there are hundreds of possible
database query tricks that developers want to leverage in their SQL
statements. Expert Mode gives you a generic way to handle all
of them.
[*]Weird aliases in the query
Did you check the attribute settings in your VO to see what aliases are specified there at the bottom of the panel? These are what gets used by the query when BC4J "calculates" the query for you (i.e. when it's not an expert mode query).
[*]The where clause didn't contain the '(+)' thingees, so the view did not perform an outer join
Outer joins require expert mode. BC4J doesn't by default ever generate outer-join queries itself.
[*]Derived view worked in the tester, but JClient master/detail generation didn't work
This is Bug# 2684863 that we're looking at for 9.0.4
[*]ViewLink inherited from base object doesn't show up for inclusion in datamodel
This is Bug# 2684866 that we're investigating for 9.0.4
You can create a new view link between the extended VO and either the existing destination view, or a VO extended from it, and it should work in the data model window.

  • How to reference the Parent view Object attribute in Child View object

    Hi , I have the requirememt to generate Tree like struture to display Salary from joining date to retirement date in yearly form.I have writtent two Pl/SQL function to return parent node and child nodes(based on selected year).
    1.First function --> Input paramter (employee id, retirement date , joining date) --> return parent node row with start_date and end_date
    2. 2nd function --> input paarmter(employee id, startDate, end_date) --> return child node based on selected parent node i.e. start date and end date
    I have created two ADF view object based on two function return
    Parent Node --> select * from Table( EUPS.FN_GET_CONTR_SAL_BY_YR(employeeId,retirement Date, dateOf joining)) ;
    Child Node --> select * FROM TABLE( EUPS.FN_GET_CONTR_SAL_FOR_YEAR( employeId,startDate, endDate) ) based on selected parent node.

    I know we can achive this writing the code in backing bean.But i want to know how can we refernce parent view object attribute values in child view object using Groovy or otherway?
    I will appreciate your help.

  • How can i generate simple Entities and View Objects ... automatically ?

    Hello eveybody,
    I hope this is the right place i'm posting in. My question is ADF/Jdeveloper related.
    Here is my problem. Where i work, we use xsd files to design our beans and we generate java classes from this xsd file. Then we design these beans again through Jdeveloper when creating Entities and related views, associations, view links... so we design our beans two times ... Moreover, 90% of the time, the work we do using Jdeveloper is the following : Writing CRUD operation that are almost the same every time.
    So my question is very simple. What do you think is the best way to automatically generate entities, views, associations, views Links and why not module (module.xml and an empty implementation) from our xsd files. Then we'll use JDeveloper to customize the generated files.
    Your help would be very appreciated, brahim !
    Edited by: user10394923 on 29 oct. 2008 06:01

    I didn't understand the role of the beans that you generate from the XSD files. When you use ADF Business Components, you don't need those beans at all and you don't need to write code for any of the CRUD operations. Can you clarify what role the beans play in the application?

  • BC4J - reverse generation - not all entities and views in same package

    Hi
    I want to use reverse generation, but separate all entity objects in package (my.entities) and View Object and view links in (my.views) not all in one package.
    I can do this by generating entities first and then creating view objects and view links separately.
    Can I do this in one step as we do if we want them in one package ?
    Usama

    Yes, you can. No one step can do all thing for me.

    This is definitely supported and tested. Please send us the exception stack trace. You must running into other problems. A few things to note:
    A) You have to mark the entities as both updateable (not read-only) and not reference-only.
    B) If you're not seeing an exception stack, turn on diagnostic. Here is how:
    To turn on diagnostic, go to the IDE,
    1. Select the project.
    2. Do right mouse click and select "Project Settings..."
    3. On the Settings dialog, select Configurations/Runner.
    4. In the righthand side pane, you should see a textbox for "Java
    Options". Please add the following JVM switch:
    -Djbo.debugoutput=console
    Then, rerun. The run command should include
    -Djbo.debugoutput=console as in
    "D:\JDev9i\jdk\bin\javaw.exe" -Djbo.debugoutput=console -classpath ...
    You should now see a lot more output on the IDE's message window. Here you should see the exception stack trace.
    If you invoking your app directly from command prompt, just add "-Djbo.debugoutput=console" after your "java.exe".
    Thanks.

  • [SOLVED] ADF BC : View Object "second level" Entity reference issue

    hi
    If I insert a row in a View Object that uses "two levels" of Entity references, the attributes of the Entity on the "second level" don't get a value.
    Consider these tables:
    MY_ROW (MY_ROW_ID, MY_ROW_STUFF, MY_ROW_LU1_ID)
    MY_ROW_LU1 (MY_ROW_LU1_ID, MY_ROW_LU1_STUFF, MY_ROW_LU1_LU1_ID)
    MY_ROW_LU1_LU1 (MY_ROW_LU1_LU1_ID, MY_ROW_LU1_LU1_STUFF)
    Where MY_ROW.MY_ROW_LU1_ID is a "look-up" in MY_ROW_LU1 and MY_ROW_LU1.MY_ROW_LU1_LU1_ID is a "second level look-up" in MY_ROW_LU1_LU1.
    I created default Entities and Associations on these tables and a View Object that uses all 3 Entities (MyRow as Updatable, MyRowLu1 and MyRowLu1Lu1 as Reference).
    See example code in
    http://verveja.footsteps.be/~verveja/files/oracle/ViewObjectEntityReferenceIssue-v0.03.zip
    (contains no Java code, all out-of-the-box ADF BC)
    problem scenario:
    If run the MyRowService Application Module in the Oracle Business Component Browser and "open" the MyRowViewAll View Object instance, I get the rows and their related "look-up values".
    If I click the "Insert a new record" button and fill out values for MyRowId, MyRowStuf and MyRowLu1IdEntity, I only get "look-up" values for the "first level". While the "second level" stays empty.
    For example, a MyRowLu1IdEntity of "2003" gives a MyRowLu1Stuff value of "2003 stuff", but no value in MyRowLu1Lu1Stuff.
    What am I doing wrong? What should I change to also get a value in the "second level" MyRowLu1Lu1Stuff attribute?
    many thanks
    Jan Vervecken

    Jan,
    If you create a view object on Emp and Dept, with Dept as a reference entity, you might choose to build the view object to only include the:
    Emp.Empno (required, since it's the PK of Emp entity usage)
    Emp.Ename (included since you want to show the ename)
    Dept.Deptno (required, since it's the PK of the Dept entity usage)
    Dept.Dname (included since you want to show the dname)
    The wizard enforces the inclusion of the required attributes above.
    When you run this view object, a join is performed and you see the reference data.
    Now, if you want to allow the user to UPDATE the reference data, you need to add one more attribute to the list of attributes:
    Emp.Empno
    Emp.Ename
    Emp.Deptno (To allow user to change Deptno employee belongs to)Dept.Deptno
    Dept.Dname
    At this point, not only is the join performed for you, but the ADF BC reference mechanism reacts to any modification of the Emp.Deptno attribute, correctly showing the reference information for that new foreign-key-referenced department (even before commiting and requerying, at which time the SQL join would pickup that correct, related information).
    The "second level" problem you describe in this thread is simply the same issue described here as a master/first-level-detail situation, taken to its logical next step. If you want the end-user to be able to change the second-level detail to which the first-level-detail is associated, you need to include the first-level-detail's foreign key attributes in the view object's select list. Otherwise, there is no foreign key attribute whose value-change event the framework can react to in order to coordinate the related reference data in the row.
    I've blogged a link to a working example of a four-level reference information view object here:
    http://radio.weblogs.com/0118231/2007/05/09.html#a818

  • View Object with Multiple updatable entities

    Hi all
    I'm using JDeveloper 11g, and ADF BC.
    I have a view object based on 5 entities and 3 of them are updatable. If I execute create of the view object, just the first entity is created. I've been searching some information and I have found this
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/html/B25947_01/bcadvvo009.htm#CEGCAJCI
    In the explample it says // The view row will already have created "blank" entity instances, but instead of having blank entity instances i'm getting null.
    Any help?
    Thank you
    Joseba

    Uncheck "Reference" for every Entity that you want to be created anew when you create a new row.
    When you check "Reference" then the framework will try to find the referenced entities in the entity cache and the database, but will not create new ones during row creation.

  • Doing queries in view objects that do not include primary keys of entities

    Is it possible to create a view object based on an entity that doesn't include the primary key from that entity object. For instance I want to do something like "select distinct (attrib1) from sometable" and obviously attrib1 is not the primary key for that table so I get an error that says, you must include a primary key in your view object. How would I implement something like this in bc4j?

    You just need to go into expert mode and create the statement directly with the relevant SQL
    e.g. in 9.0.3:
    Context Menu -> New View Object
    Select no entities in Step 2
    Next through to Step 5 of the wizard and enter you expert mode SQL there. E.g. Select distinct deptno from emp
    Assign the new VO to the AM data model and away you go.

    Is it possible to define ur own view objects with the same flexibility as the Data Tables

    Hi Saket,
    Following will be required for created a custom business object.
    1. Object Type - ZTEST (Internal Techincal Key)
    2. Object Name - ZTESTNAME (Technical Key Name)
    3. Name - TEST (Name of BO, it is used while selecting the object type)
    4. Description - (Short Description of BO)
    5. Program - ZTESTPROGRAM (ABAP program in which the methods of the object type are implemented)
    6. Application - A or B.. etc (Area to which your BO is related)
    Please remember that you can learn these basic things by giving F1 help on those fields and in HELP.SAP.COM.

  • Problem with using multiple Entity Objects in a view Object.

    Hi
    Thank you for reading my post
    I have create 3 Business components for 3 of my database tables and now
    I must add 3 tables in a View object so i used Jdeveloper Wizard to create the View Object.
    -I Add Entity Objects which are business components to this view (In Step 2 of the Create Vview Object wizard).
    -In step 3 that I add Attributes all my attributes are marked as Transient
    Can some one explain why it happens?
    I need one of those tables to be updateable and two other tables are not updateable.
    What should should i do to achieve this?
    I should say that tables does not have any database relation (Foreign Key I Mean).
    Thanks.

    Hi user505214
    When you created your VO, on selecting the second EO, you'll note at the bottom of the same page on the wizard/editor, checkboxes for updatable or by reference. By default reference is checked and this will make your second EO's attributes transient.
    In the JDeveloper Developer's Guide for 4GL/Forms programmers, the following sections outline the difference between updatable or by reference:
    7.5 Including Reference Entities in Join View Objects
    27.9 Creating a View Object with Multiple Updatable Entities
    Make sure to read 27.9 if updatable is what you want as it indicates you may need to add some additional code.
    Hope this helps.

  • Programatically inserting rows of a view object trouble

    Hi,
    I'm using JDev 10.1.3.3. I'm trying to use the application module specific to my app to create rows in a viewobject. User is on page "view", goes to page "new" and fills out a form which upon submit sends the data to an Application Module method I've exposed to the client. What doesn't happen, is when I add the row of the view object programatically in my view object, it doesn't display on the "view" page until a commit is done (when navigating back from the "new" page".
    Here is some sample code of the insert into a composite (not composition) viewobject. When I insert in the new page, it returns to the view page... and the row doesn't show up until commit happens:
    //in my application module
    public void doiIt2(String name, String badge, String item){
    UserItemViewObjRowImpl row = null;
    row = (UserItemViewObjRowImpl)getUserItemViewObj1().createRow();
    row.setBadge(badge);
    row.setBadge1(badge);
    row.setItem(item);
    row.setName(name);
    row.setNewRowState(Row.STATUS_NEW);
    getUserItemViewObj1().insertRow(row);
    getUserItemViewObj1().executeQuery();
    Does anybody know how to get this row to pop in, like using a "creation form" to a table in a view page? What am i doing wrong??? Do I need to do something special in my pagedef of the "view" page?
    Thanks,
    Dan

    Chris,
    Thank you for looking at my problem. The row is not inserted into the table (on the view page) with the code I shared. The criteria for the table's VO is simply a select all, with no where clause, so I don't think I'm excluding it... Upon hitting a commit button, the new row does pop in to the table witch is further evidence that the criteria for the VO isn't excluding the new row.
    I have tried insertRowAtIndex(), even before I posted this with no luck.
    BTW, if I add to the bottom of the code I shared, getDBTransaction().commit; or getDBTransaction().postChanges(), the row does pop into the table when the "view" page is navigated to.
    Am I doing something wrong with my construction of my ViewObject? It is a composition (I got that wrong in my initial post) between two entities. The Item entity is updateable, and not a reference using an association between the two entities on the Badge attribute.
    I am trying to have new composite VO rows always show up as the first item in a table. I've read that the Row.STATUS_NEW will always do this... so I'm trying to avoid posting/committing the new row. I'm also not above inserting at a particular location, but some of the pages I hope to use this pattern with re-execute the VO every time the page is rendered, instead of just rebinding the Iterator with the VO rowsets. I'm being led to believe that if a Row is posted or committed, re-executing the query will resort all rows based on 'order by', etc.
    Also, I have setup a similar yet even more complicated example using three entities. I was able to make this work as expected. The difference is that I was using an ADF Creation Form. ( I did have some work in the model to make all the keys line up though.... posting order... etc.).
    I have gotten similar things like this to work with single entities VOs. I'm just having trouble when I do composite VOs. That is supported, isn't it?

  • BC Archive - problem with opening view object based on entity from archive

    We have encountered a weird problem with a reusable BC library on different PCs.
    Library was imported into a project following steps in section 25.7 of the ADF guide.
    A view object was created using some of the entities from the library.
    Model tested successfully with view object (using AppModule tester).
    Page developed with no problems.
    Application copied to a different PC.

    However, the View object still tests successfully using the AppModule tester.
    The page using the View object still runs successfully.
    I believe the problem is that when the archive was originally imported, it was imported from a different location. The Containees tag in the project .jpx file references that path name. But even when I edited the path name, I still could not open the view object. Do we have to remove and redo the import of the library each time the application is copied to a different machine?

  • Questions on ADF View Objects, Links and Iterators

    I have a number of questions regarding using ViewObjects in applications where there are alot of relationships between tables.
    First, lets say that I have ViewObject SomeView that was added to the App Module (AM) as VO1. And because it has a number of "detail" records that have to be iterated through in a "report like" view it has those other VO's added under it as "children" in the AM.
    So I have
    VO1 (an instance of SomeView)
    --> VO2 (an instance of some other view)
    --> VO3 (an instance of some other view)
    that is used on pages where only a single VO1 is shown at a time.
    Now because I had another page I wanted to make that had a listing of all SomeView objects. Some of the fields in SomeView are foreign keys to records in VO2 and VO3 and while I don't want to show all the fields from VO2 and VO3, I do want to show a name field from each rather than just the foreign key.
    My experience (though I've never read this anywhere) tells me that when doing a "table" that is a list of rows from a VO, you can't display info from the child VO's because the child VO's are on whatever record corresponds to the "currentRow" in the parent VO and just displaying the rows in a rangeSet doesn't make each the "currentRow" so even we display 10 records in a for loop, the "currentRow" is just one, and the child VO's iterators aren't moved as we go through the for loop. (Can someone confirm if I am correct on this conclusion????)
    So the only way I know of to show some field from a related table in each row is to make the VO have the entity objects from the related tables be part of the view as references. Is this the only way?
    If I do that on a view that didn't have other views as children defined in the AM I don't have any problem and it works like I want.
    But if I do it on a view that did have other views as children defined in the AM it makes the page(s) using that view with the children iterators behave badly. Half the information quits showing up, etc.
    For example, ... if I go to the "SomeView" which was defined with only one entity object association, and I add the entity objects (that are the basis of instances of VO2 and VO3 ) as referenceable only, it totally breaks the page where I display a single VO1 and use it's VO2 and VO3 children. IS THIS NORMAL OR AM I MISSING SOMETHING?
    So, is the solution that I have to have more view objects defined for different purposes ?
    Can anyone give any general guidelines for when/where to use different view objects vs. when to use different iterators. I'm not having much luck with using secondary RSI's and haven't found much info on them.
    Also, how about issues of naming iterators that are in various binding containers (ie. UI Model for a page). If I do and LOV it creates an iterator and gives it a default name like ViewNameIterator1. If I already have a different page that uses a regular (non LOV) iterator with that name, and the user goes back and forth between those pages, is that a clash?
    Finally, I've read a couple of Steve Muench's blogs on View Link consistency but I'm not sure what the rules are on when it applies and doesn't. How you turn it on or off, etc. One of his examples in http://radio.weblogs.com/0118231/2004/02/27.html talks about it in the context of two view objects that are NOT typically "linked" in a master/detail kind of way. Like an AllDepartments and a DepartmentsLessThan view. Do you have to create a View Link between them to have results of one be reflected in the other if they aren't used in the same page in a web app? Or does it happen automatically (with the caveat that you have to do the rowQualifies method). Just feels like I'm missing some pieces.
    Thanks in advance,
    Lynn

    Hi,
    I am also interested in a best-practice note from oracle.
    Currently we store history in seperate history tables for columns that changed. All this implemented in our BaseEoImpl overriding the EntityImpl.prepareForDML().
    Thanks

  • Closing references to front panel objects

    Short version of my question: are programmatically generated references to front panel objects (controls, etc.) automatically disposed of when the VI exits?
    More details: I'm recursively retrieving references to all the controls on the front panel.  (I say recursively because I'm also getting the individual controls from clusters, subclusters, and so on.)  I then return an array of control references, which does not include the references to clusters--only standalone controls or the actual controls themselves contained in clusters.
    Do I need to explicitly close the references to clusters that this VI generates, or is it unnecessary since the VI will run briefly, return an array, and then exit?
    Or another scenario: in a subVI I open a reference to the parent VI.  Do I need to close that reference at the end of the subVI, or is it pointless because the reference will be disposed of when the subVI exits anyway?
    (I did find this article, which I think addresses my question, but I'm not sure.)
    Thanks,
